PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE/FOLK

Da Captain Trips
In Between (black)
'In Between' is the fifth full length album of the band and comes after 3 years from 'Maths Of The Elements' with the same line up. This time the mission of the four musicians is to explore the sound and the landscape of the place "in between" where our consciousness moves when the physical form ends its time. Death is part of life and it could be the last definitive psychedelic trip. A great inspiration was reading 'The Tibetan Book Of The Dead,' where you can find a detailed explanation of what to do in life to recognize the way after you have passed away. They tried to give their own interpretation going deep in their consciousness to explore the sound of that moment, passing through the colors, whispers, shades, symbols and thinking about the emptiness of our being. The result can be perceived in their compositions from a dark and a light side of the music that fight. Compared to the previous album, there is an improvement in dialogue between guitar and keyboards and structures are like a flow because most of the ideas come from improvisations and some songs were born and developed starting from the rhythm. All the songs have been recorded live, mixed and mastered at the Outside Inside Studio in the middle of woods in the north of Italy by Matt Bordin, between November 2024 and February 2025. Visual artist and friend Dem created this beautiful artwork as his own interpretation of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Inspired by the shape of a double Vajra (a ritual tool symbolizing absolute stability in Tibetan Buddhism) he merged it with magical symbols from various European traditions that bridge the material and spiritual worlds.

Dream Phases
Velvet Knife/mrs. Songbyrd
Ranging from garage fuzz to space rock psychedelic, this 7" is bound together by its harmonies. Comes on translucent green vinyl.

Hurley, Michael
First Songs
A new deluxe edition of some of Michael's first recordings! Tip on cover with glued wrap around print! New liner notes with never before published photos and words from Michael! This is a small art edition that, believe it or not, Michael finished working on two weeks before he passed away. A real treasure not to be missed.

Haven Green
All Human Life Is Here
In the mid-eighties Steve Somerset was living in London and working as part of the creative team for Kevin Godley and Lol Creme at their video production company Medialab. He was living in Ealing near a green space called Haven Green and thought The Haven Green sounded like the name of a late sixties band. 'All Human Life Is Here' is the forth album by The Haven Green. For The Haven Green's fourth outing, Steve Somerset has expanded his original idea and given it a twist. Take a pinch of psych, add a cup of pop, mix in a handful of your favourite '60s rock influences, let it simmer and without the shadow of a doubt all human life is here.

V'73
Seven Pieces For Keyboards, Bass Guitar And Drums
A long-forgotten fine prog rock trio from Hungary, V'73 now presents its debut album. Recorded in 1973-1976, the album features own compositions and arrangements of pieces from Tchaikovsky and Leo Weiner. On the harder side of the '70s prog rock trio universe. The LP version of the album was out in 2019.

Radics, Bela
Aranyalbum 1967-1978
Béla Radics: a legendary Hungarian rock guitar hero, singer and composer. Sakk-Matt, Tuzkerek, Taurus, Alligátor - he played in great rock bands either as leader or just as a member. The 'Golden Album' compilation covers his various stages of styles from 1968 to 1978, including his best compositions like 'Királyi Madár' (Royal Bird) or 'Zöld Csillag' (Green Star). Two unreleased 1973 recordings of 'Taurus' are also included. The LP version of the album was out in 2020. The CD features the bonus track 'Ki Arcán Csillagot Visel' (Who Bears A Star On Her Face) from 'Taurus' in 1972.

Beatrice
Tamadas!
Punkish, boogie-ish, ironical, but at its roots it is blues rock - played by a Hungarian power trio (guitar/bass/drums) and led by Nagy Feró, singer and lyric writer. Beatrice caused a huge scandal in Communist Hungary during their 1978-1981 period, which ended with the ban of the band at all! We now present their legendary September 1980 gig played for a public of 10.000 fans, titled 'Támadás!' (Attack!). Excerpts were already published from this evening, but the entire set is out on 'Támadás!' for first time. The LP version of the album was out in 2020.

Four Levels Of Existence
The Four Levels Of Existence
Psychedelic hard-rock Holy Grail, originally released by this Greek band in 1976 but sounding more akin to late '60s/early '70s. Highly recommended to fans of HEAVY-FUZZ guitars, think Dark, Fire, Open Mind or even Spacemen 3 circa 'Revolution'! The 4 Levels Of Existence formed around 1974 in Athens from the ashes of a band called Frog's Eyes. Some of their influences were groups like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Who or Iron Butterfly as well as traditional Greek music. They recorded their sole album in just 10 hours with no overdubs and it was eventually released (500 copies only) on the small Venus label. The cover artwork was created by guitar player Athanasios Alatas. The band sadly split soon after but they left behind one of the most legendary and sought after albums not only from Greece but also from the worldwide heavy-prog scene. Remastered sound. Original artwork in hard cardboard sleeve + obi. Insert with liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby) and rare photos/memorabilia. Includes 'Someday In Athens,' sampled on 'Run This Town' by Jay-Z feat. Rihanna and Kanye West.

It's All Meat
It's All Meat
Official reissue of this sought-after Canadian psychedelic hard-rock album from 1970. Formed in Toronto in the late '60s, It's All Meat (the name was taken from a dog food commercial!) soon caught the attention of influential character Jack London (frontman of pre-Steppenwolf band Jack London and the Sparrows) who managed the band and secured a deal with major label Columbia Records. After recording their first 45, the proto-punk MC5/Stones sounding 'Feel It,' the band started working on their first album with the tandem of Jed MacKay and Rick McKim as main songwriters. 'It's All Meat' was released in 1970 and offered a powerful mix of garage-rock, psychedelia and early hard-rock, drawing influences from bands like the Stones, Country Joe & The Fish, Doors, Velvet Underground... tracks like 'Roll My Own' or the lysergic 'Crying Into The Deep Lake' are now considered classics of the genre. Sadly, the band would split soon after the LP was released. Original artwork in gatefold sleeve. Remastered sound in 24-bit domain. Insert with liner notes by Plastic Crimewave and rare photos/memorabilia. Download card with non-LP singles and rare tracks.

Eyes
My Degeneration
Retrospective of British mod/freakbeat/pop-art heroes The Eyes including all their cult classic 45s ('When The Night Falls,' 'I'm Rowed Out,' 'My Degeneration'...) plus cool rare tracks sourced from demos and acetates. Formed in London in 1964, The Eyes took the early feedback experiments and pop art image of bands like the Who one step further. The band wore dyed parkas in various pastel colours and brightly coloured rugby shirts with huge eye symbols on the chest. Their raw, energetic sound and distinctive style combined aggressive, fuzz-driven guitar riffs with catchy melodies and a youthful defiance that captured the energy of the London mod scene. Their music bridged rawness freakbeat with the emerging psychedelic sound that would dominate the latter half of the decade. Tracks like the feedback-laden 'When The Night Falls' or the fuzzed-out 'You're Too Much' sounded years ahead of its time and they would influence the mod, garage revival and indie/shoegaze scene of the following decades. The Eyes only released a handful of singles between 1965 and 1966. They disbanded in 1967 and unfortunately they never released a full album during their short lifespan. Here it is! Remastered sound. Eight-page color insert with liner notes by Paul "Smiler" Anderson and rare photos/memorabilia. Download card.

Bolton Iron Maiden
Maiden Flight
Active between 1970 and 1976, The Bolton Iron Maiden (originally known as Birth and then Iron Maiden) was a psychedelic hard-rock band formed in Bolton by Ian Boulton-Smith (Beak) on lead guitar, Derek George Austin on bass and Paul TJ O'Neill on drums/vocals. Influenced by contemporaries like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Free, Groundhogs or Andromeda, their music blended blues, hard rock, and progressive elements. They soon built a strong reputation supporting acts such as UFO, Bedlam (with Cozy Powell), Caravan, Thin Lizzy... In 1976, the band disbanded following the death of guitarist Ian Boulton-Smith from cancer. In 2005, Paul O'Neill revived interest in BIM by releasing two albums, 'Maiden Flight' and 'Boulton Rides Again,' which compiled studio and live recordings. The proceeds from these albums were donated to Cancer Research and Macmillan Cancer Support. With the blessing of the more famous Iron Maiden and their manager Rod Smallwood, the band adopted the name The Bolton Iron Maiden to avoid confusion. For the first time on vinyl, 'Maiden Flight' collects their previously unreleased studio recordings from 1972 plus raw as f*ck live tracks circa 1975. Insert with detailed liner notes and rare photos/memorabilia. Download card with extra (live) bonus tracks.

Heads
Reverberations Volume 3

Meteors
Vs. The World Part I (black)
The original creators of psychobilly music, The Meteors began as a reaction against soft neo-rockabilly music of the late '70s rock revival era. Since then the loud, sneering lovers of horror, perversion and death have released a few dozen records and are still going strong, over 40 years into their career of evil. The Meteors are all about raucous, die-hard, and wildly entertaining mix of rockabilly, country, surf and punk rock'n'roll to the fullest. 'The Meteors Vs. The World' was originally released by Anagram Records on a double CD back in 1999 and split into two separate vinyl editions, parts I and II, on the same year by Raucous Records. The double album is a collection of 17 Paul Fenech composed songs, half a dozen live tracks from a headlining set at the 'Tenth Anniversary Big Rumble' held at Great Yarmouth's Vauxhall Holiday Park, two tracks recorded live in Las Vegas, five alternative versions of previously released songs, plus two bonus tracks. The live material is crisp and clearly recorded and captures The Meteors in their prime, presenting six tracks delivered with the power of an assault force, while the studio stuff was laid down at the band's own hi-tech In Heaven studio. The Meteors' own songs are bolstered by suitably butchered covers such as 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' and 'Wild Thing.' In addition the hidden cover songs from the original double CD edition are there too; on Part I you get the bands take on the Beach Boys' 'I Get Around' and on Part II they destroy Elvis Presley's 'Rock-A-Hula Baby.'

POP/ROCK/WAVE/NOISE

Vacation/whippets
Armory Of Bays/c-thru
Two bands from the midwest share a fine split 7-inch. Vacation is a Cincinnati-based rock band with a discography ranging from frenetic blown out poppy punk to New Zealand influenced jams to wishing-they-were a stadium rock act! Whippets is a post-punk grungegaze band from Wisconsin led by Bobby Hussy.

Umlaut
Desole (black)
'Desolë' is the third proper album of critically-ignored award-dodging Melbourne (Australia)-based Mr. Bungle horn playing musician Bear McKinnon alongside longtime band mates Angus Leslie (guitars/vocals)and Shane Lieber (bass), but now featuring the drumming of Mr. Bungle-proper band mate Danny Heifetz. Catchy, unapologetic rock and pop songs steeped in late-'70s arena-rock grandeur. Playful, fun-loving, intricate, sophisticated, brutal, and deadly serious.
PUNK/HARDCORE

Toxic Youth
Still Hungry
Toxic Youth is a hardcore/crossover band from Milan, Italy, active since 1990. 'Still Hungry' is even more direct and powerful than their previous CD ('Back To You-Th'), featuring tight drumming, sharp guitars, a pounding bassline, and vocals that make you want to scream along at the top of your lungs. Their influences are vast - they listen to everything from rock, punk, thrash, hardcore, grind, and crossover, both new and classic - constantly searching for new emotions and inspiration.

Rescue Cat
Flesh & Weapon
Founded in Lombardy in early 2023 and now hailing from different parts of Italy, Rescüe Cat is an energetic hardcore band bursting with attitude and... love! Starting off as friends in the local scene, they're now ready to make their mark as one of the fresh faces of Italian hardcore. With performances at major events like Venezia Hardcore and Built To Blast already under their belts, they've developed a distinct style that mixes intense, emotional lyrics, tight compositions, and dreamy imagery. This is their debut EP. In eight visceral tracks, the band pours out their passion for fast riffs and emotion-packed lyrics. 'Flesh & Weapon' is a concept album that dives into themes like shame and love, religious guilt, motherhood and girlhood, body horror, and trauma, all driven by furious blast beats and impassioned deliveries. Each track weaves a haunting narrative, blend ing dreamy imagery with raw, unfiltered anger. Rescüe Cat aims to carve out a unique spot in the hardcore scene, offering anyone feeling isolated an unflinching look and a crutch to hang on.

Blanco Teta
Le Debacle De Las Divas
The Argentinian punk-noise-queer combo Blanco Tet ais back with an album from the underground scene of Buenos Aires!!! 'La Debacle De Las Divas' is a raw, satiric and emotional album about capitalism's obsession with youth, and the burnout of always having to keep yourself "new." It dives into the sounds of pop and rock, noise, no wave and even metal and grunge, and it's a record for the working-class divas, the Flixbus divas - too broke, too tired, too late, but still loud. Recorded live in one room, no overdubs, no edits - just the urgent chaos of cables, bodies and feedback. It's danceable, glitchy, and full of heartache and rage. Fuck meritocracy. Fuck techno-feudalism. This is survival music for the ones paying subscriptions to platforms that censor them. 'La Debacle De Las Divas' is a shelter and also a call to arms for outdated divas.

Help (usa/punk)
Courage (yellow)
Portland's Help is the frenzied sound of a broken and collapsing society. In a world beset with anti-human reactions to daily struggles, Help responds with ways to dismantle evil machines and systems. It is this pro-human mindset that brought Help band-mates Ryan Neighbors (guitar/vocals), Morty (bass), and Bim Ditson (drums) together. All three had spent the last decade or so in other, perhaps more restrained, bands: Ditson with grinding indie rockers And And And, Neighbors with alt-pop dynamos Portugal. The Man and with his electronic project Hustle and Drone. With Help, they are retrieving punk roots each member had put down in their teens. They are ripping the seams back open to see what's really inside. "Everyone is angry," says Neighbors, "Make some art about it." Help is the band Portland needs right now. Fuck it, it's the band the whole world could use a heavy dose of if we want to climb out of the dark ages of greed and into the next century of mutual aid and collaborative self-directed communities of creativity. This release (firstly released by Three One G Records) also includes the band's debut self-titled EP from 2019. Edition on marbled yellow vinyl.

Grossrama
Keep Your Eyes To The Skies
Originally released on cassette only in 1992, this album by the punk rock band from Oshkosh, Wisconsin has finally made it to the LP-format!

Muslimgauze
Single # One
At this point the vast swathes of unreleased Muslimgauze material Bryn Jones left behind when he passed away over 25 years ago is as legendary as any of his work. And sure enough, there's still some being unearthed today. 'Single # One' is the first in a series of four (three 7"s and one 12") taken from one of Jones' customary completely unlabelled DATs he sent to labels seemingly as fast as he finished them. Both sides here indicate that, even on what might have been throwaway efforts for other artists, Jones was constantly chasing his muse around new corners. Side A begins with the kind of tough percussion loop often found on Muslimgauze releases, but even as foreboding synths start to swell in the background, Jones introduces a rhythmic, peppy little keyboard riff far jauntier than most things he created. Side B, meanwhile, takes Jones' looped hand percussion in a dubbier direction, but unlike other times he explored that space there are some elements (phased zaps, a slightly skanking rhythm) that, while not reggae exactly, makes this feel more like a traditional dub than Jones tended to make. Both sides stand in testament to a creator who never stayed in one place for very long. Cover design, screen-printed on Gumund with metallic color. Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl.

Death In Rome
Follow The Beatmaster
Two original songs from Death In Rome, 'Follow The Beatmaster' and 'Stalingrad (Piano Version)' featuring Miro Snejdr.

Maioli, Walter -& John Zandijk-
Star Rover (2lp)
The visionary Walter Maioli (Futuro Antico, Aktuala) and the eccentric electronic musician John Zandijk first met in 1984 when they both gravitated toward the experimental Sound Reporters collective, participating in the release of 'Ethnoelectronics' (1986). Shortly afterward, the two met at Zandijk's studio in Rotterdam, where they completed their journey of exploration to the edge of the Universe in just three nights. The recordings were made only after 3 a.m., when psychic energy is at its peak, and inspiration belongs solely to the realm of dreams. It was a ritual of long galactic fluctuation, where the mystical sound of the flute was filtered and expanded by the Aureal system, a device capable of breaking it down into cascades of aureal harmonies. Through its extemporaneous approach, the music transforms perceptions of ancient pyramids or tropical forests into phosphorescent nebulae, luminous fountain openings, and unprecedented planetary interstices-interstellar portals leading to new archetypal-ancestral visions. It feels like sailing through colored orbits in the red gases of Jupiter and Mars, lost and dissolved forever in the engines and gears of the most secret cosmos. Between Pink Floyd-esque psychedelic flashes and Tangerine Dream-inspired sidereal architectures, Maioli and Zandijk reveal the most phantasmagoric and unknown side of Sound Reporters.

METAL/STONER/HARDROCK

Recorruptor
Sorrow Will Drown Us All
A band formed out of necessity for incessant speed and the desire to keep pure unadulterated riffage alive into death metal, Recorruptor has succeeded in providing the Midwest U.S. with captivating live concerts played to the soundtrack of honest, yet unapologetic extremity. Having honed in on their greatest qualities and polishing each and every potential blemish along the way, Recorruptor entered the studio in 2023 to record their third and finest effort yet - 'Sorrow Will Drown Us All.' Recorruptor is the perfect package for the everyday death metal fan - a band that has something everyone can enjoy. Take a listen for yourself!

Stygian
Dreadlands
Hailing from Ravenna, this band delivers a searing hybrid of crust punk and extreme metal - tense, raw, and brutally honest, yet layered with dramatic melodic overtones. Their songs are short and punchy, but never rushed, allowing their ideas to unfold with deliberate intensity. The band's debut explores the contrast between two spiritual worlds: the harmony-centered pagan traditions and the legacy of Abrahamic religions, which often channel humanity's most violent instincts. While pagan rites served to express and contain primal forces, maintaining balance between humankind and nature, monotheistic dogmas have frequently justified war and destruction in the name of faith. This work stands as a tribute to life, to the sacred bond between people and the natural world - a bond shattered by centuries of religious conflict. A powerful fusion of black metal and crust punk, the album is steeped in ritualistic intensity and ferocity, encouraging deep reflection on what has been lost in the struggle between spirituality and imposed doctrine.

Kryuhm
Demoni
Kryuhm formed in 1999 with Daniele Laurenti (vocals and guitar), Daniele Sinico (bass) and Fiorenzo Brusaferro (drums) playing a classic heavy metal inspired by Black Sabbath; they made a demo cassette in 2000. Daniele Sinico left the band in 2004 and the band had to stop 'til 2009 when Rossella Berton joined the band; Kryuhm played on various Italian festivals together with Dark Ages, Bullfrog, Solstice, Dark Quarterer, Midryasi, Black Oath, Crimson Dawn, In Aevum Agere, Epitaph, Krownn... After a long hiatus, the band started again In 2021 and after the album 'Only In My Mind' they present this 2025 full length album 'Demoni,' which is dark, doom... a real deep journey through the abyss of Italian dark sound. If you want your place in hell support Kryumh! Limited to 200 copies on marbled vinyl including poster.

Pandora's Box
Maradj A Vonalban
Pandora's Box were one of the most popular hard rock bands in '80s Hungary. Their live set is still sounding amazing, thanks to the outstanding composing skills and guitar themes by Sándor Bencsik and vocals by Gyula Vikidál. 'Maradj A Vonalban' (Hold The Line) is their first live album, showing the band at its best in September 1983. The LP version of the album was out in 2020.

Sunniva
Hypostatis (black)
Turku-based sludge metal force Sunniva was formed in 2016 out of a shared hunger for the raw sonic power of heavy music. The band's name, derived from the Old English Sunngifu, meaning "gift of the sun", hints at the layered darkness and light woven into their sound. Blurring the lines between death doom, sludge, and post-metal, Sunniva summons the same seismic intensity as titans like Amenra, Neurosis and Dark Buddha Rising. Their past releases - 'The Holy Mountain' (2017), self-titled EP (2020), and the sprawling single 'This Reality Only Speaks In Blood' (2018) - have cemented their reputation for crafting immersive, soul-crushing soundscapes. 'Hypostasis' is their debut album.
JAZZ/AVANTGARDE

Boudreau, Walter
Walter Boudreau + 3 = 4
Recorded in 1967, 'Walter Boudreau + 3 = 4' is a fierce, free-form jazz outlier by a young Boudreau, just before founding L'Infonie. Long out of print, this rare gem is finally back on vinyl - a crucial snapshot of Québec's experimental jazz awakening.

Cosmic Tones Research Trio
The Cosmic Tones Research Trio
Another album of peaceful explorations by The Cosmic Tones Research Trio. This, their second record, maintains the space and long tones that made their debut, 'All Is Sound,' a successful anecdote to the loud and fast times we live in. It also expands their musical palate with powerful rhythmic elements. The Cosmic Tones Research Trio have been breaking new ground with healing/meditation music that also honors their roots in gospel and blues... and hints at forward looking spiritual jazz. Through their cello, saxophone, piano and flute playing they bring a new sound to the table. Ancient to the future.

Pinakotek
Komorebi
Pinakotek is an instrumental band born in Rimini and very active and appreciated live. The project blends electronica, psychedelic funk, ambient and sonics into a hypnotic and visual blend of grooves, analog delays and suspended atmospheres.

Dorella, Bruno
Redrum (black)
'redrum' (with lowercase r) is the original music written for the homonymous dance show by gruppo nanou (with lowercase g and n). Composed in 2023 and put on stage in 2024, it won the Ubu Prize (Italian theatre awards) as best dance show of the year. The music is almost entirely electronic, with spare guitars, bass and vocal parts. Bruno Dorella plays, produces and mixes everything. As the previous album 'Paradiso' (also a soundtrack for gruppo nanou), there is a constant dialogue between the musician and the choreographers Rhuena Bracci and Marco Valerio Amico, and with the dancers' bodies, for a longtime collaboration that will hopefully evolve more and more.

Dance With The Dead
Dark Matter
For over a decade, Californian duo Dance With The Dead -Tony Kim and Justin Pointer- have been crafting their signature brand of synth-metal: a pulse-pounding fusion of analog synths, face-melting guitar riffs, and cinematic horror vibes. Since their 2013 debut 'Out Of Body,' their sound has haunted dancefloors and playlists alike, drawing deep from the well of cult horror and sci-fi classics. Now, with the release of the EP 'Dark Matter,' they push their sound into bold new territory. For the first time, the duo ventures into vocal-driven tracks, collaborating with a range of powerful artists to explore new dimensions of their music. Comes on orange/red vinyl.

African Steel
Following in the footsteps of 2019's African country-western compilation 'Bulawayo Blue Yodel,' Olvido Records presents a compendium of top-notch slide guitar songs from the golden era of 78 rpm recordings from southern, central and eastern Africa. Featuring fourteen gorgeous and unique adaptations of traditional and popular regional styles for the acoustic "steel" guitar, with intriguing influences from southern American country and blues recordings, to the Hawaiian origins of the instrument. 'African Steel' includes more recognized singer-guitarists such as George Sibanda, Charles Sonko and Adou Elenga with more obscure artists such as The Blind Guitar Player and the Nongomo Trio. Ranging from up-tempo dance numbers featuring multiple slide guitars and percussion, to plaintive bottleneck-blues style ballads, to a Ugandan cover of a Jimmie Rodgers classic, each song is a highly memorable glimpse into the early years of the Hawaiian guitars incorporation into these great artists' repertoires and creative work. Includes an insert with full lyrics and contextual notes. Audio restoration and re-mastering by Michael Kieffer of Origin Jazz Library, with artwork by Gordon Ashworth and Cybele Collins.

Troupe Asnimer & Jh Burch
Troupe Asnimer & Jh Burch
Multi-instrumentalist and composer JH Burch gives new intensity to a neglected ethnographic and folklore reality: the rural Amazigh poets of the Ait Bouguemez valley of Morocco. His vision of cultural exchange led him to the vocal repertoire of the all-female Troupe Asnimer, whom for decades have been amongst the most important custodians of the various Amazigh oral art forms in the region. The Asnimer women recite in chorus songs written by numerous anonymous authors, some dating back centuries, making their tradition and a fluid and constantly evolving collective oeuvre. Each of the tribal forms has its own time and place, some like 'Tamawayt' are poems of travel and lamentation, 'Timnadin' of daily labour, others are sung as Sufi rites. From the Asia and the Pacific, JH Burch succeeds here through his knowledge of different sound traditions and a varied use of instrumentation (baglama, santur, tanpura, kamanche, organ, deyurey, electronics, percussion), and in becoming a conduit for Asnimer, frames the collaboration without distorting its ancestral and rural physiognomy. On the contrary, the songs of the Amazigh tribes of the Haut-Atlas are colored through Afro-Asiatic spiritual arrangements of meditative sensitivity. Limited to 200 copies.

Laitinen, Heikki/martti Pokela/hannu Saha
Soitimella: New Music For Five-string Kantele (1986)
'UUTTA MUSIIKKIA VIISIKIELISELLE KANTELEELLE' - In a catalogue perhaps better known for its out-there heavy metal, seismic noise-rock and overall outsider sonic extremities, 'Soitimella' (Ektro-156) arrives like a hush in a whirlwind, a solemn breath of air echoing through the iron-aged pine. Released by Jussi Lehtisalo's Ektro Records, this singular recording unites varying players of the Finnish kantele - Heikki Laitinen, Martti Pokela, and Hannu Saha. The kantele is no ordinary stringed instrument. With origins buried deep in the Finnish-Karelian folk imagination, it is said to have been first built by Väinämöinen, the mythical shaman/hero of the Kalevala, from the jawbone of a giant pike. The oldest forms of kantele had just five strings and were said to be played by shepherds, ritualists, and wanderers. Their songs were neither entertainment nor spectacle - they were meditations and acts of remembering. The kantele in its nature hardly demands attention; it rewards stillness. Heikki Laitinen, a mercurial force in Finnish experimentalism, was also a researcher and professor, committed to expanding the boundaries of what Finnish folk music could mean. Martti Pokela, by contrast, was a traditionalist par excellence, revered for reviving the kantele in post-war Finland and elevating its status to a national treasure. Hannu Saha, a key figure in the Folk Music Institute of Finland, straddled the academic and performative realms, documenting and playing with equal force. In releasing 'Soitimella,' Ektro makes a quietly radical move: it insists that the avant does not always shout. Sometimes it returns to the roots, not to preserve them, but to hear what they are still trying to tell. Equally for enjoyers of both Alio Die and David Roden, but also of Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou and Daniel Schmidt. You can file it next to silence. Or next to the rustle of reeds. Or next to nothing at all. (Juho Toivonen, May 2025).

LOTUS MATTER – In Limbo (CD-LP, Sound Efect)
“Informed by ‘90s post-metal/indie, they couple art-rock density with classic ‘70s ‘grandeur’!. ‘In limbo, Part 1’ is complex yet crispy, with distinct interlocking melodies over a cinematic ambience.” (The Obelisk)
TRIZO 50 – Trizo 50 (+7") (LP, World In Sound)
Bands like Phantasia and their later form, Trizo 50, perfectly capture that passionate, underground creative spirit of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Read a very in-depth interview on It’s Psychedelic Baby! Magazine.
NEON LEMON – Hypnagogic Visions (10") (EP, Feral Child)
Neon Lemon feel less like a band trying to keep up and more like one tuning into a deeper signal. Easily one of the most interesting groups in the current psych underground. Interview about their music can be found here.
MARC AND THE MAMBAS – Three Black Nights Of Little Black Bites (LP, Cold Spring)
“Restored from original VHS tape recordings made by the late Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle, Coil), these remain the only recordings that exist of Marc And The Mambas performing live.” (Front View Magazine)
JADE STONE & LUV – Mosaics, Pieces Of Stone (LP, Subliminal Sounds)
“As is increasingly the case with re-discovered records of this kind, that wait has been worth it.” (Record Collector Mag)
