Im September 1968 spielte AMON DÜÜL bei den "Internationalen Essener Songtagen", dem ersten fünftägigen Rockfestival Deutschlands, das der spätere Ohr-Labelchef Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser initiiert hatte. Der Berliner Musikproduzent Peter Meisel hörte und sah die Band dort und nahm sie spontan unter Vertrag, zusammen mit Tangerine Dream und Birth Control.
AMON DÜÜL stand der Berliner "Kommune 1" nahe und entstand zu einer Zeit, da jeder ein Künstler war, der einer sein wollte. Und so konnte auch jeder, der wollte, ein Musiker sein. Zusammen, im Kollektiv, war alles möglich. Angelika und Helge Filanda, Wolfgang Krischke, Ulrich Leopold, Rainer und Ella Bauer, Peter Leopold sowie Uschi Obermaier spielten in Meisels Studio zeitgemäß high in the sky eine Session ein, die alle Regeln durchbrach und alle Hörgewohnheiten auf den Kopf stellte. Die Aufnahmen wanderten zunächst in den Giftschrank, erst ein Jahr später traute sich Meisel, sie unter dem Titel Psychedelic Underground zu veröffentlichen.
Hier ist die Fortsetzung: Die Doppel-LP Disaster/Lüüd Noma erschien 1972, als es die Gruppe AMON DÜÜL schon nicht mehr gab, und sie präsentiert weitere Aufnahmen aus derselben Session. Alle Titel sind surreale, unübersetzbare Wortspielereien, die Stücke sind klanglich besser organisiert, weniger fragmentarisch, klarer voneinander abgesetzt und ausgefeilter nachbearbeitet als auf der ersten LP - der ausgenzwinkernd mitgelieferte Hinweis, alle Störungen und Fehler seien beabsichtigt, hat aber gleichwohl einen wahren Kern.
Nun sind diese denkwürdigen Aufnahmen wieder zugänglich, remastered von den analogen Originalbändern. Sie sind das Dokument einer Zeitstimmung, die unwiederholbar geblieben ist. Wer sich für die Anfänge des Krautrocks ernsthaft interessiert, kommt an diesem Album nicht vorbei - das Disaster wartet auf Sie!

In September 1968, AMON DÜÜL played the "International Essener Songtage", Germany's first rock festival of five days duration, which was initiated by the later Ohr label boss Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser. The Berlin hit producer Peter Meisel heard and saw the band there and spontaneously signed them, along with Tangerine Dream and Birth Control.
AMON DÜÜL was close to the Berlin "Kommune 1" and came together at a time when everyone was an artist who wanted to be one. Anyone who wanted to could also be a musician. As a collective, anything was possible. In Meisel's studio, Angelika and Helge Filanda, Wolfgang Krischke, Ulrich Leopold, Rainer and Ella Bauer, Peter Leopold and Uschi Obermaier, sky-high as it was state of the art, recorded a session that broke every rule and turned all listening habits inside out. The recordings initially went into the poison cabinet; it was not before a year later that Meisel dared to publish them under the title Psychedelic Underground.
Here's more: The double LP Disaster/Lüüd Noma was released in 1972, when the group AMON DÜÜL didn't exist anymore, and it presents further recordings from the same session. All titles are untranslatable surrealistic plays on words, the tracks, compared to the first LP, are better organized in terms of sound, less fragmentary, more clearly separated from each other and edited more sophisticatedly - the note that all glitches and errors are intentional is meant tongue-in-cheek, of course, but nevertheless has an element of truth.
Now these memorable recordings are available again, remastered from the original analog tapes. As already the first record, Disaster/Lüüd Noma is a document of a zeitgeist that has remained unrepeatable. Anyone who is seriously interested in the beginnings of Krautrock cannot ignore this album - disaster is waiting just for you!

It is worth mentioning Bob Drake on drums, former member of the legendary formation Thinking Plague (also on Hail, 5UU's, The Science Group) who has also mastered the project from their studio in the Midi-Pyrénées and also to mention the guitarist Jordi Cabayol (Camino al Desván) both Juanjo and Jordi began their career in a significant band of Barcelona of the early eighties, such as Entr'acte. The becoming of Juanjo Sánchez would take him to other latitudes as a member of Alondra Satori and without losing the lighthouse of his city, he would collaborate with other outstanding musicians such as Quicu Samsó (Koniec, Macromassa). The fluidity and chromaticism of his previous album Gonza Magilla is still perceived in here, but in a much more electrified way with guitars that are sometimes expansive, other times exuberant wrapped up with contagious synthesizer modulations and very marked rhythms. The production and especially the arrangements are fantastic with those special presences of synthesizers that are not common around here. Its original improvisation and experimentation is skilfully adjusted by Juanjo Sánchez, giving a much more playful result with unexpected combinations, very much in continuity with a certain European art rock such as Aksak Maboul, Etron Fou, Zamla, The Work or the mischievous resonances of The League of Gentlemen; all this mapping the sound transit, to an unpredictable and vibrant non-place.
Housed in its original hand made artwork with the little upgrade twist of silk-screen printing textured grey cardboard and including a insert colour with photos and text provided by Juanjo Sánchez. Baker Gurvitz Army was formed in 1974 by former Gun and Three Man Army members Adrian Gurvitz (guitar, vocals), Paul Purvitz (bass, vocals) and drummer Ginger Baker, formerly with Cream, Blind Faith and Airforce. The trio was soon augmented by the arrival of vocalist Steve Parsons and keyboard player Peter Lemer. The band was a highly regarded live act and recorded three albums of some of the finest British rock music of the mid-1970's. This official collection features a BBC Radio 1 In Concert performance, along with a full concert from Kings Hall, Derby recorded for radio, all remastered from the original master tapes. Recorded in Somerset utilising a mobile studio and at Olympic Studios in the summer of 1973, this was the final studio album by Family featuring yet another line-up of the band. Vocalist Roger Chapman, guitarist John "Charlie" Whitney and drummer Rob Townsend recruited bassist were joined by new members Tony Ashton (keyboards) and Jim Cregan (bass, guitar). Released in September 1973, the album closed a chapter on one Britain's most unique bands. This 2CD edition has been newly remastered from the master tapes and also includes 19 bonus tracks drawn from singles and previously unreleased studio out-takes along with a bonus CD of BBC Radio sessions from 1973, including a superb In Concert performance and a final session for the Top Gear show. Zzebra was an extraordinary, but unfortunately short-lived, British jazz-rock band of the 1970s, a kind of "supergroup" that mixed jazz, progressive rock and African rhythms. Zzebra was founded by the two ex-If members Terry Smith (guitar) and Dave Quincy (saxophone) as well as Loughty Amao (saxophone, flute) from the Afro rock band Osibisa. In 1974 and 1975 the band released two albums at Polydor, briefly became the house band at London's legendary Ronnie Scott's Club and toured with Yes, Soft Machine and Chick Corea's Return To Forever. On October 20, 1975, Zzebra performed at the Postaula in Bremen. The concert was recorded and is now being published for the first time. In addition to Dave Quincy and Laughty Amao, bass guitarist John McCoy (Gillan, Mammoth), keyboardist Tommy Eyre (Alex Harvey, Illusion, MSG), singer Alan Marshall, guitarist Steve Byrd (Gillan) and Irish drummer Liam Genockey were also present (Amalgan, Steeleye Span, Gillan) on stage.

It is a story of Dadaists, communists, pharmacists, and cult leaders, led by a young generation of upstart students, artists, and dreamers hellbent on turning their world upside down. At the forefront of this movement was Yellow Magic Orchestra's Haroumi Hosono, a polymath innovator whose band Happy End released the first Japanese language rock album, and whose influence would go on to be felt across Japanese music for decades. Alongside, and informed by the Kansai scene's Takashi Nishioka and Happy End collaborator Ken Narita, they experimented with cadences and accents of the Japanese language to open the door for others to experiment with their own forms of psychedelic folk too. Charting the decade from 1970 to 1980, 'Nippon Acid Folk' surveys a little explored corner of Japanese music history, but one which ultimately laid the foundations for an independent music industry, launching the careers of Hosono and others in the process. 'Nippon Acid Folk 1970-1980' is pressed on vinyl and represents the start of a deep dive into Japan's rich history of folk and psychedelic soul music.

In truth they've never really been away, having played the occasional show in the last couple of decades, while last year lead man Jim Shepherd finally released his first solo LP to great acclaim. Possessed of what is surely one of the indie world's most soulful voices, Shepherd is now back with his boys, and this album is closer in spirit to the Minks' much loved debut full-length LP (known to fans as the 'Blue Album') than anything else they've ever done. Although Adam Sanderson is not in the band at the moment, this is still the Jasmine Minks of old with Tom Reid taking a much more upfront role in vocals with his sonorous baritone while stalwarts Wattie Duncan and Martin Keena supply supreme Minkness. With The Television Personalities' Dave Musker back in the fold and longtime associate Chris Narayan adding fuel to the fire, the mature Minks sound as full of energy as they did when they were in their teens. This is the Jasmine Minks of 'Cold Heart,' of 'Where The Traffic Goes' or 'Cut Me Deep.' It's powerful, psychedelic in parts, passionate and poppy. Timo Kaukolampi, frontman for Finnish electronic rock group K-X-P and tireless sonic wanderer, is releasing his second solo album on Optimo Music. Exquisitely rendered, shadowy, curiously claustrophobic and even occasionally paranoid, 'Inside The Sphere' is an album wholly deserving of its name. It is not a one-note album. For every moment where a clammy ambient space enters, a dense analogue bassline is there to fill it. Timo references devotional and choir music as an influence on this album. The paranoia and foreboding is tempered by these headier aspects. Kaukolampi mentions "empty and hollow spaces" in relation to several of the songs. Perhaps this is the very space behind the mask, where outward disguise merges with inner reality.

MANNEQUINS OF DEATH - THE MANNEQUINS OF DEATH
The Mannequins Of Death was formed from the ashes of Swedish post-punk band Cortex. Original members from Cortex, TT Reuter and The Kingdom Of Evol formed The Mannequins Of Death on October 3, 2015 and made their stage debut the same day at Truckstop Alaska in Gothenburg, Sweden. This is due to the suddenly cancelled and sold out reunion gig with Cortex 3 October 2015 at Film Studios I Gothenberg. After several live performances at Klubb Död/Nalen, Babel in Malmö and at the Festival Uddevallakassetten, The Mannequins Of Death entered the studio in 2016 and recorded this album in Studio Anfallszonen on Pusterviksgatan in Gothenburg. Uno Wall, permanent drummer of Cortex passed away shortly after recording this album in 2016 and this was his last recording. The material was mixed in Heartwork Studio in Lund 2017-2019 and final mixed during the pandemic 2020-2021 in the Svenska Grammofonstudion in Gothenburg by Hans Olsson, Per Svensson, Gerth Svensson and Henrik Venant. Mastering: Hans Olsson, Swedish Gramophone Studio. The material contains newly written songs as well as a live recording of Liket Lever's classic track 'Levande Begravd' from Truckstop Alaska 2015.

Susana Barón Supervielle was born in Buenos Aires in 1910, but she lived in Brazil most of her life. Creation with electroacoustic means represented one more step in her search for renewal and a new articulation of her triple cultural horizon articulated between Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Paris. The results open a new dimension in the interstices of the sound montage. Susana had been a follower of Pierre Schaffer and his peers in the Groupe de Recherche de Musique Concrète from Paris since they began in the early 1950s. Barón Superveille's catalogue of works, as selected by the artist herself, shows nine compositions for magnetic tape. With one exception (1977's 'Continuo Variante'), the pieces are in the personal archives of the composer filed in the Archivo del Instituto Nacional de Musicología "Carlos Vega", in Buenos Aires, which depends on the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Argentina. This edition on Wah Wah Records is a coproduction with the Instituto Nacional de Musicología "Carlos Vega" and recovers all the available electroacoustic works composed between 1974 and 1980. While most of the collected works premiered in both Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo on dates close to those of their composition, there are not any previous known releases of these recordings, so this LP is not only an exception, but also a novelty. Limited to 290 copies.

'Musik Für Animierte Tonspurfilm', the twelfth album by Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung (or DAAU, as they are commonly known), is the soundtrack to a series of short, abstract animation films by Rudy Trouvé, who also acted as a creative
director during the recording process. The music originates from acoustic improvisation sessions by accordionist Roel Van Camp, clarinetist Han Stubbe, double bass player Hannes D'Hoine and percussionist Jeroen Stevens. These took place according to conceptual guidelines set by Trouvé. Sometimes the starting point was a play on words or a random chord sequence, sometimes a specific atmosphere, but the playing field was always kept deliberately limited. Hence, the musicians were forced to build a musical structure with minimal means. The result was cut on cassette, after which the Antwerp enfant terrible Rudy Trouvé, known from his work with dEUS, Kiss My Jazz, Gore Slut and I H8 Camera among others, happily hit the tracks with a virtual sledge hammer. DAAU's pieces were cut up, sampled, drastically restructured and pasted together again, a method that had been applied earlier on the retrospective album 'Hineininterpretierung' (2017). On top of that audio collage, the musicians added new electronic layers, using a digital accordion, synths, digital bass and marimba. DAAU says: "On the soundtrack, like on the older record, we were looking for a symbiosis between an acoustic and electronic sound. And there too we messed around with dub and krautrock references." Recorded Live in Italy in October 1985 and mastered directly from the old dusty cassette, here's a previously unheard Steve Lacy recording from a rare duo appearance with pianist Martin Joseph, a little known yet fascinating British musician who had worked with Harry Beckett, John Surman, Ian Carr, Tubby Hayes among others, and who later became a regular presence on the Rome mid 70's creative Jazz scene. This recording gives us an opportunity to listen to the soprano sax giant in a repertoire not frequently found on his other duo recordings with pianists. The set list includes some of Lacy's finest compositions like "Prospectus", "Flakes" and "Coastline", plus Thelonious Monk's classic "Bemsha Swing" a tribute to Monk's visionary mastery where Joseph's contrapuntal response to Lacy's angular lines leads the music towards a multidimensional space, a quality to be found throughout the whole album, This is a wonderful discovery! and a significant addition to Lacy's discography and legacy.
Contains printed inner sleeve with archival photos and extensive liner notes by two Italian soprano saxophone specialists Roberto Ottaviano and Eugenio Colombo, and pianist Martin Joseph himself.

Originating on the Isle of Wight in 1978, the band that would eventually emerge as Cassie began initially appearing under the more denim-and-dog-collar monikers of High Voltage and Black Dog. A key moment in the nascent group's history came in late 1978 when Debbie Barker joined the group as lead vocalist and immediately formed a tight songwriting partnership with guitarist Nigel Hayes. Before long, fans of the group now known as Flirt, were calling out for the band's own punky/pop material, rather than their staple of covers, and singing along with them at their numerous local gigs. Several demo and recording sessions occurred between early 1980 and 1983 all of which remained unreleased until now. Despite local radio airplay and gigging, it was not until Flirt caught the attention of former Black Sabbath co-manager and producer Wilf Pine in 1981 that they group would issue what would be their first and only single. Under Pine's management and with the new name of Cassie, the group re-recorded new versions of 'Change My Image' and 'Will You' for a single release on A.K.A. Records in 1982. Despite the record's strength, A.K.A.'s untenable financial situation resulted in almost zero promotion for Cassie's single. Cassie continued to gig and record for a few more years before ultimately disbanding with its members joining other bands. A tragic moment in the band's history occurred in 2002 with the passing of original songwriter and guitarist Nigel Hayles. Thankfully, his great talents are now showcased within this album.

BACK IN PRINT! Reissue on vinyl of a rare, mellow, underground soul album out of Atlanta, originally released in 1978. Leo's Sunshipp consisted of Kenny Stover (previously a background singer with Marvin Gaye, f.i. on 'Inner City Blues'), ex-Wallace Brothers' Johnny Simone and Alvin Few. Halfway through the recording sessions Johnny Simone sadly died, after which the remaining musicians decided to end the project and shelve the recordings. However, Lyon's Records got hold of the mastertapes and released four finished tracks, plus the four backing tracks. These were carefully mixed in a way that emphasized the beauty and intensity that already was there. Tracks include the ultimate rare groove classic, 'Give Me The Sunshine' and the original version of 'I'm Back For More' which was later covered by Marlena Shaw and a massive hit for Al Johnson & Jean Carn. This is a c collection of deep and tasteful mid-tempo groovers.

STEPSON - THE LOST TAPES '72-'74
About forty years in the making, and finally the world has the second Stepson album! Utilizing tapes preserved by drummer Len Fagan then transferred to digital and mastered by bassist Bruce Hauser, this fine collection of twelve songs is as close as the world will ever get to a real second Stepson album. Some is raw, some is embryonic, but it's all prime stuff for fans to savor, reflecting the bands "devil may care" attitude and rock'n'roll lifestyle. And just in case you don't believe that the band liked to party, consider that the exact recording dates (and even some locations) have long been forgotten. To borrow an old adage: If you can remember Stepson, you weren't there. Kicking off with a crunching riff by guitarist Joey Newman, Danger Zone is the heaviest track Stepson ever cut, replete with an ominous atmosphere reflecting the seedy side of their native Los Angeles; Streets of Alameda (1974) is an ode to vocalist Jeff Hawks' hometown, featuring a liquor store holdup and a stolen Lincoln used as the getaway car. Flesh & Blood is the only track on here that got an official release, albeit by ex-Smith belter Gayle McCormick as the title track to her second solo album, released by Decca in 1972. This version showcases the riff in full glory. And if you don't believe that this riff is strong, consider that The Tonight Show band played it for approximately two weeks in 1976, prompting Fagan to confront "author" Don Menza, who coincidentally did the Flesh & Blood albums horn charts and was now claiming credit for the song under the title Instant Heart. The song disappeared from late night TV show shortly thereafter. Bad Situation, the only other 1974 track, describes the bands predicament that year: a track that should have propelled them to the big time, but instead bounced off a brick wall like a tennis ball. The maracas and funkified quasi-Bo Diddley groove hint at Stepson's growth and what might have been. Bluesy hard rock band that rose from the ashes of Touch. Their sole album was released on ABC/Dunhill Records in 1974. Despite the fact that the band never toured in support of their amazing album, over the years the word has gotten out about this incredible album and the band enjoys cult success among collectors. Easily one of the best examples of "cock rock" ever put onto wax.

Chilliwack's third album 'All Over You' came out in 1972, and contained the hit 'Groundhog,' which showcased Henderson's incredible slide-guitar work. The song was actually a loose interpretation of a 200 year-old British traditional song that had previously been covered by Buffy Saint Marie and the Every Brothers (their version was called 'Muskrat'). Also on the record was the cool little ditty 'Chickenshit Man.' There was an Edmonton Journal article around the time of this album's release in 1972, in which Chilliwack front-man Bill Henderson commented that while 'All Over You' "may not have the philosophical depth of its predecessor, it is perhaps more exciting." Many of the songs seem to have their roots in basic blues melodies, but thanks to Henderson's soaring vocals, some finely textured harmonies and a liberal dose of slide guitar work, the songs are transformed into unique and exciting compositions.

CHILLIWACK - CHILLIWACK (THE DOUBLE ALBUM)
The driving force behind Chilliwack during their illustrious career was Bill Henderson. The native of Vancouver was already a working musician while still in high school. He was a student at UBC in 1966 when he formed the group The Collectors. This their second and eponymous double album was from 1971, featuring the classics 'Lonesome Mary,' 'Music For A Quiet Time,' and the seventeen-minute long 'Night-Morning.'

COOPER BROTHERS - THE BEST OF THE COOPER BROTHERS
The Cooper Brothers are a southern rock band founded by brothers Brian Cooper and Dick Cooper and their long-time friend Terry King. Starting in 1974, the band released several singles under the production guidance of Les Emmerson (Five Man Electrical Band). The group had early regional success with the tracks 'Finally (With You)' and 'Miss Lonelyhearts' under the Polydor label. The band gained more attention in the summer of 1978 when they signed with Capricorn Records and producer Gary Cape. Capricorn was producing several of the most popular southern-rock acts of the time - The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie and Elvin Bishop. Over the next few years, the Cooper Brothers released two albums which sold well; and the singles 'The Dream Never Dies,' 'Show Some Emotion,' and 'I'll Know Her When I See Her,' all charted on The Billboard Hot 100. At the height of their career the band toured extensively throughout North America, opening for The Doobie Brothers, Black Oak Arkansas, Joe Cocker, Charlie Daniels, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and McGuinn, Clark and Hillman (basically, the Byrds, right?).

FOLDY, PETER - BONDI JUNCTION AND OTHER HITS
A collection of melodic pop classics, including his number one Canadian hit 'Bondi Junction' (a melody that is hard to get our of your mind), the catchy 'Roxanne,' 'School Of Love,' and 'Love City,' which sounds like it could have been recorded by The Bee Gees. Singer/songwriter Peter Foldy was born in Hungary and raised in Australia, where he befriended the brothers who later found fame as Bee Gees. In 1965, Foldy moved to Toronto and eventually studied film at York University. After his 1973 hit 'Bondi Junction' fared well in both Canada and the U.S., Foldy signed with Capitol (for Canada) and Polydor (for the U.S.) and had additional success with the self-written 'Roxanne' and the Bill Martin/Phil Coulter composition 'Julie Ann.'

INDIO - BIG HARVEST
A lost classic. Contains the original version of "Hard Sun", later recorded by Pearl Jam leader Eddie Vedder for the soundtrack to Sean Penn's film, Into The Wild. Indio is the stage name for Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Peterson who released one album, "Big Harvest," in 1989, which includes the top 10 hit Hard Sun. The album involved high-profile artists, including Bill Dillon and David Rhodes (Peter Gabriel) on guitars. Larry Klein played bass; Brenda Russell sang background vocals, as did Joni Mitchell. Other collaborators included Indian violinist L. Subramaniam. But none of Indio's material charted in the US, "Big Harvest" did not sell up to the record company's (A&M) expectations. Peterson was subsequently dropped from his label and left the business. He remains a reclusive figure to this day. The album is often noted for its message of conservation and spirituality through nature."

INFLUENCE - INFLUENCE
Reissue of an interesting album from 1968, originally out on ABC Records. The Influence was one of the most fascinating bands to emerge from Canada during the '60s. The group's rich diversity of styles (from beat to R&B to heavy psych rock to jazz) was a result of the members' wide range of musical backgrounds, interests and geographical origins. The band's driving force was Louis Campbell McKelvey, who'd spent time in South-Africa where he was a member of garage/beat/mod band The A-Cads. McKelvey also played with Les Sinners and Our Generation. Formed in late May, the quartet, named The Influence, immediately made its presence felt and became regulars at Montreals Barrel during the summer of 1967. In June, Rossi and Island returned to Montreal and, after catching the bands set, joined the line-up. The new line-up became more musically adventurous, adopting a style that was influenced by jazz musicians Sonny Murray and Archie Shepp, and with Island adding a second lead voice.

KENSINGTON MARKET - AARDVARK
In 1969, Kensington Market released their third and final LP, 'Aardvark.' This album is a weird and wonderful mini-masterpiece upon which much of Kensington Market's reputation rests. This time out there were no silly jug-band tracks and many of the albums ideas are fully formed and well thought out. Some of the songs, like the beautiful, trippy 'Cartoon' and the ahead-of-its-time 'Help,' use primitive synthesizer in all the right ways. 'Help' sounds like a lost Flaming Lips track with its open arrangement and blissed-out guitar playing. Other tracks like 'Think About The Times' and 'If It Is Love' have more of a melancholy air but are equally excellent and reveal a more pessimistic side of the band. Kensington Market were produced by Felix Pappalardi of Mountain fame, who also produced the Cream. On 'Aardvark,' he is credited with "musical direction" as well as production, and it shows in the heaviness, and the wistful, surreal weirdness of most of the tracks (similar in flavor to Cream's 'Wheels Of Fire' and the Mountain albums), even contributing a short interval piano piece called 'Ciao.'

KENSINGTON MARKET - AVENUE ROAD
A staple on the Yorkville Village scene in Toronto during the mid-to-late '60s, Kensington Market were discovered in 1967 by musical entrepreneur Bernie Finkelstein (who would later help The Paupers and Bruce Cockburn, among others). Finkelstein was able to land the band a record deal with Warner Brothers. They would garner critical acclaim, but no commercial success. In 1968 Kensington Market did the soundtrack to the NFB film 'The Ernie Game' - a big deal for a Canadian band. That same year they released their debut album, 'Avenue Road,' (named after a street that intersects Yorkville Avenue). It was a modest effort, noteworthy for decent pop instincts and solid songwriting.

MAINLINE - CANADA, OUR HOME AND NATIVE LAND
A great big ball-busting blues album with some great harmonica, a lot of killer slide guitar and lyrics that, while not exactly profound, seem to fit right in with the rowdy nature of the album as a whole. The album starts with 'Blind Girl,' a song that sounds like it could have been recorded by The Who or Zeppelin. This makes complete sense once you know that Mainline actually had its first big successes in England playing the same clubs at the same time as those monoliths of the English rock scene. The rest of the album touches on all sorts of different aspects of the blues, from the twangy almost country sound of 'Get Down To' to the 8 minute long extended jam on 'Going To Toronto' with some great dirty guitar playing. This album is full of energy - think of this album as a rowdy house party.

MAINLINE - NO SUBSTITUTE
Final album (1975) from this seminal Canadian blues band, who started their journey in the late 1960s. Much of (McKenna Mendelson) Mainline's uniqueness stemmed from the originality of their approach to the blues genre. In the summer of 1968, blues guitarist Mike McKenna, formerly of Luke & The Apostles, connected with acoustic blues artist Joe Mendelson. The two worked well creatively. Former bassist for The Paupers, Denny Gerrard, was invited to join, and The Spassicks' Tony Nolasco completed the quartet on drums. In December 1968, MMM reversed the trend of English bands coming to North America, and proceeded to England to gig and hopefully to pursue a major record deal. MMM started gigging on the English club circuit with such notables as The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Family (band), The Keef Hartley Band, Gun, and the newly-formed Led Zeppelin. After several false starts, MMM signed with Liberty/United Artists in the spring of 1969, and in April recorded their best-selling album 'Stink.' Following the success of 'Stink,' MMM/Mainline had three subsequent releases of note - 'Our Home And Native Land,' 'The Mainline Bump and Grind Review - Live At The Victory' (a well known, somewhat risqué Toronto burlesque theatre), and 'No Substitutes.' Following the release of 'No Substitute's Mainline disbanded and McKenna and Mendelson never played together again.

PAUPERS - MAGIC PEOPLE
The Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967 should have been The Paupers' launch pad to international fame. Only four months earlier, the Canadian folk-rock band had seemed destined for the top when Bob Dylan's manager Albert Grossman bought their contract and began hyping them as the next biggest thing since The Beatles. A month prior to the festival, the group had showcased its talent at a string of well received shows at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, and had spent two solid weeks working up a suitable set list for the forthcoming festival. As Canadian rock journalist, Nicholas Jennings notes in his excellent book 'Before The Goldrush,' the opportunity to "blow away the competition looked good when the band was scheduled to follow mellow popsters The Association." But from the minute The Paupers launched into their set, everything that could go wrong did, and in the subsequent media frenzy, the group's performance was all but ignored. Within six months, the group once hyped to surpass The Beatles, had lost not only its most inspirational member but was facing mounting debts.

A great AOR album, with a Hipginosis cover and a top 30 hit in 'Video Kids.' Prototype was Dan Lowe and Brad Stekel who had been in the 49th Parallel, Painter and 451. Very good, if you like old school AOR with great keys, you'll love this CD. Doug Riley is a fantastic singer and this is indeed a very fine AOR album. I don't think you'll find better examples of pompy AOR than 'Behind Your Eyes' or 'Live Forever.' An excellent blend of high class melodic rock with great use of backing vocals and loads of keyboard blasts coming out of everywhere!

ROCKADROME - ROYAL AMERICAN 20TH CENTURY BLUES
Rockadrome: Forty years after they released their only album, the name excites fans of psychedelic rock. Recorded in a time when creativity counted for more than commercial appeal, the album was recorded for the eclectic Sound Canada label. It sold poorly, but was rediscovered as part of the revival in interest in psychedelia; the only problem - copies of the original album are incredibly rare (and incredibly expensive!). Studio owner and executive producer Art Snider (who had discovered and first recorded a young Gordon Lightfoot years earlier) was inspired enough by Rockadrome's first sessions to basically give engineer/producer Ray Lawrence free reign to carry the project in whatever direction it might go. Fortunately, it was an era of experimentation, studio clocks could mostly be ignored, (there was a belief that the best stuff was done after dark) and so Rockadrome was given an after-hours slot. All through that fall and winter, the songs were refined, recorded, tossed and replaced. Contemplated. Even the physical process became a strange routine. The guys would need to phone the studio by 5 pm to check that the evening schedule was open, then scramble into their cars east of Toronto & head down the 401. The results show that the band deserve their reputation. Extensively remastered, this is the first legitimate reissue.

At last, a second collection of rare singles from the label that produced the cream of the mid-sixties crop of Canadian garage, punk, and psychedelic music! The Gaiety roster was rich in talent (the 49th Parallel, Jarvis Street Review, and Souls of Inspyration, not to mention the Checkerlads, White Knights, Dewline, Tomorrow's Keepsake, NRG, Merriday Park, and Portland Street South)-but it was not rich in resources, which is why these singles are so incredibly rare. This second Gaiety Records volume has twenty-four tracks in all, ranging from the ferocious punk psych of Solid Reputations Lies to the wonderfully druggy (and truly demented) Ode to a Cucumber, A Berry, and A Flower", a song that deserves to be in the pantheon of weird psychedelia right alongside the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Bands Help, Im a Rock. NRGs UK psych-inspired Magic Man, much in demand in collectors circles, is here in all its glory-along with six other tracks by this underrated band, including the psychedelic groover Withcraft. Other highlights are four more terrific beat/pop songs from the Plague and Lexington Avenue (bands who would become better known later as Jarvis Street Review). WHISKEY HOWL - WHISKEY HOWL
First time available on CD for this obscure Canadian funk-laden heavy blues rocker, originally released in 1972 by Warner Brothers. Whiskey Howl remains one of the great success stories of the early CanCon era. They were a blues band that enjoyed a large following, appeared on legendary concert bills and yet, they left only one (memorable) studio album. The record quickly garnered rave reviews and airplay on FM stations across Canada. And that was that. The LP took some time to come out; by the time it was released in 1972, the band had broken up. Anyone who likes driving harmonica blues should have this in their collection.
