BLACK SUN ENSEMBLE - THE BLACK SUN ENSEMBLE (VOL. 2) (BLACK)
Lion and RTA's second volume of the Black Sun Ensemble's recordings for their classic first album contains an alternate version of that album, including the tracks from the Camera Obscura label CD (c. the year 2000) version of that album - well, sort of. When sifting through the masters while preparing the Lion/RTA reissue of the real, actual first Black Sun Ensemble album - as issued in 1985 on Pyknotic - it became clear that many of the original LP tracks were also on the Camera Obscura CD release, but under the wrong names. Others were present, but in versions which differed from the Pyknotic LP versions - and again, under the wrong names. So, for example, 'Mayan Dance' on the CD is actually the same theme as the Pyknotic LP 'Heart Of The Sky,' but not the same take. Here's the kicker: some of the tracks on the Camera Obscura CD share a name with a track from the Pyknotic LP, but are in fact completely new recordings, with no comparable on that original LP. 'Blue Thunder,' 'Red Ocean,' and 'Mandolin Winds' are three such compositions. This means that there are basically two quite different 'Blue Thunder's written by Jesus; two utterly different 'Red Ocean's; and two absolutely not-the-same 'Mandolin Winds' too. As a result, there are two separate Lion LP releases of Black Sun Ensemble's debut recordings: volume one (LION LP-193/RTAI007) with a black cover, as per the original, is just that: the original 1985 Pyknotic LP reissued for the first time. This second LP (LION LP-194/RTAI008), with a white cover, contains alternates and new tracks, as released on the CD reissue of BSE's debut. We felt it was important to keep the Pyknotic LP separate, to do justice to the original vision Jesus Acedo had when he self-released that music, and (eventually) found a segment of the world very willing to embrace it. But the other variations of that music are equally excellent and important, thus this second, separate LP for those gems. Comes with an 8-page booklet, with notes by Byron Coley, BSE bassist Mike Glidewell, Rich Hopkins (songwriter, Sidewinder, and founder of San Jacinto Records), and a reproduction of a poetry volume by BSE's Jesus Acedo.
This RTA edition is limited to 500 copies on black vinyl.

Formed in 1966, The Electric Prunes had a novel approach to being a band: deciding to be a recording unit rather than a live performance band. Heavy psychedelic progressive rock outfit Mojo & The Kitchen Brothers is a 5-headed omnium gatherum of young and eclectically inspired music freaks from Belgium that came together in 2021. Sharing their love of late '60s and early '70s heavy and progressive rock, as well as for their contemporary psych-rockers, Mojo is continually playing around with their bearings in the sonic whirlpool between past and
present. With their sights racing past both sides, they manage to sound both assuringly familiar and arousingly strange.
After the digital release of their EP 'Flaming Tiger Lizard' (2022) followed the vinyl release in 2023 through the Dutch record label Lay Bare Recordings. It is that same continuity and driving force that led the band to their debut full length album titled 'Mojo's Heavy Cream' in 2023 digital and on vinyl.
This album presents an intriguing collection of all-original tracks that both clearly echo some of the band's major influences, like Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Wishbone Ash, and show the band coming together musically and finding their own voice. Indeed 'Mojo's Heavy Cream' displays some degree of maturation in Mojo's sound and vision, but this maturation is by no means final. The band leaves the door not just open, but blown off its hinges and burned to a crisp in the fires of their insatiable lust for more. Childlike enthusiasm, je m'en fous freedom and freaked out free-association are the cornerstones of Mojo's creative process, and as such, you can safely expect to hear more from these guys soon, because their next projects are already in the works. Formed in 1978 in Derry, a Republican city in Northern Ireland, power-pop-punk trio The Moondogs mixed the energy of The Clash with the melodic bent of The Beatles. Gigs with The Undertones led to a 45 for Good Vibrations, plus a few more for Real Records, and by the time they cut debut LP 'That's What Friends Are For' in New York with Todd Rundgren for Sire, they were at their most accomplished; somehow, the band split mid-way through its creation, rendering the album a frozen moment in time, rather than a leg-up to world domination. A great listen and another missing piece of Northern Ireland's punk puzzle.

After a debut single in 1977, forward-thinking Edinburgh punk band The Rezillos signed to Sire, leading the band to record their acclaimed debut Can't Stand the Rezillos in New York, where co-produced Bob Clearmountain drew out the best of their abilities. The anthemic 'Top of the Pops' reached the UK top-20 and spirited punk covers of The Dave Clark Five's 'Glad All Over,' Gerry & The Pacemakers' 'I Like It' and Fleetwood Mac's 'Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight' added to the appeal. The band would soon split and reform as The Revillos, but nothing beats the power of this unmatched debut LP. 4 bonus tracks included, great stuff!

'Yul Brynner Was A Skinhead' is the best of the bunch, 'Neville Is A Nerd' and 'Quick To Quit The Quentin' are typical Toy Dolls punk piss-takes, and there are digs at a hotel and a local launderette too. Everything is delivered in lightning-fast bursts of energy, poking fun at all and sundry, the Toy Dolls punk way.

DOLLY MIXTURE - BBC RADIO SESSIONS
Rejoice indie poppers, punks and pop kids - Sealed Records in conjunction with the band and BBC release all 14 tracks Dolly Mixture recorded for the BBC. You no longer have to listen to bad YouTube uploads... Here are all the tracks remastered from original sources, and as an added treat featuring John Peel introducing them and three jingles the band recorded for Kid Jensen. The first session was recorded for John Peel in August 1979 and features the unreleased 'Dolly Mixture Theme Song' which the band used to start gigs with and a super strong cover of Goffin and King's 'The Locomotion.' Four already Dolly Mixture classics from the time were also recorded including 'Dream Come True,' 'He's So Frisky,' 'New Look Baby' and 'Ernie Ball.' You can hear the excitement and joy and the sounds are so well recorded at Maida Vale Studios with top notch studio equipment and production. The next session from September 82 was recorded for Kid Jensen and shows a slightly more mature band, but the tracks are just as instant and lovable. These tracks have a more '60s girl group sound but with more energy. Most people will know the tracks from the 'Demonstration Tapes' album but these versions are better recorded and show the band moving forward. The last session from October 1983 was for Kid Jensen and again shows a band evolving but still with tunes that over forty years later are still loved and adored. All in all 14 perfectly rounded pop nuggets wrapped in a beautifully designed sleeve and poster by Paul Kelly.

In an essay on the remarkable Estonian sound poet Ilmar Laaban, the Swedish author Teddy Hultberg noted that Labaan often drew inspiration from Tristan Tzara's motto, "thought is born in the mouth." The inquisitive, empathic music of Zea, aka Arnold de Boer, often follows a similar dictum. But whereas Laaban's surrealist poetry worked "backwards," creating elemental, vegetative sounds, Zea's music seems to work towards the words,
making a springboard for his message. McLuhan's doctrine made flesh, literally.˙Great pop music always has a magpie quality. And Zea's message is created from a wide circle of friends and
sources. A student of philosophy and cultural anthropology, De Boer has always had a fascination with language and poetry: "sucking up, or sticking with every word, sentence or concept" that gives rhyme to his muse. Movies and books also provide a steady source of words and ideas: De Boer; "there's always a bit of Ingmar Bergman in my music and a bit of James Baldwin too. Did you know they once met? For me that is the perfect meeting." The album˙'We Are Still Each Other's Only Hope,' showcases a number of fascinating "meetings" of words
and music, most notably, 'And The Man Killed The Bird,' a haunting soliloquy based on a pygmy legend as recounted
by Joseph Campbell in the series˙'The Power Of Myth'˙with interviewer Bill Moyers. The track is a true example of a
thought that is "born in the mouth:" De Boer's voice is masked, sounding like it's been recorded on a dictaphone. Sound and message are massaged to create a mood poem that was maybe first meant exclusively for the ear. Elsewhere we can hear words purloined for a good cause: such as on the restless 'Hyperobjects,' a track inspired by Timothy Morton's book˙'Hyperobjects.' And 'The Magician' is based on Maria Wislawa Anna Szymborska's poem˙'Powroty'("Going Home").

BROWN, BARRY - LOVE AND PROTECTION
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Barry Brown was one of the handful of upcoming artists that came to define the emerging dancehall style as a singer with a distinctive high tenor that was instantly recognizable, and one which inevitably made a lasting impression on the listener. His lyrics were witty, gritty, and full of gusto, typically addressing the trials and tribulations facing the underprivileged, but also celebrating the positive aspects of ghetto life, including the irresistible lure of the local sound systems, the need to enjoy a loving relationship with a woman, and the various other joys one may encounter along the way. Most of the work on 'Love And Protection,' an intriguing compilation that surfaced in the mid-1990s, brings us back to Barry Brown's peak period as heard on the 'Cool Pon Your Corner' and 'Far East' LPs, along with the original unembellished mixes of two EPs released by Black Roots, as well as some harder to trace material, such as the vibrant digital title track. Running the gauntlet from 'reality' tunes to dance numbers to songs of loving romance and everything in between, it ultimately emphasizes Barry Brown's impressive versatility, highlighting the important role he played in the shift from roots to dancehall.

Alton Nehemiah Ellis OD (1 September 1938-10 October 2008) was a Jamaican singer-songwriter. One of the innovators of rocksteady, he was given the informal title "Godfather of Rocksteady." Fully licensed, 140gr vinyl. Reissued for the first time on vinyl, an amazing showcase of roots and reggae lovers, originally released on Trojan in 1977. Although his place as a reggae pioneer cannot be questioned, Owen Gray has felt for many years that he never got his due from Jamaica, his homeland. On August 6 2023, the government finally recognized his contribution awarding him with the honor of Order Of Distinction, Jamaica's sixth-highest honour. Gray, now 87, is ecstatic about what he considers an overdue and deserved reward. In the rocksteady era, he recorded for producer Sir Clancy Collins AKA Sir Collins. His popularity continued throughout the 1960s, working with producers such as Clement Dodd, Prince Buster, Sydney Crooks, Arthur "Duke" Reid, Leslie Kong, and Clancy Eccles, including work as a duo with Millie Small, with songs ranging from ska to ballads. He continued to record regularly, having a big hit in 1968 with 'Cupid.' His 1970 track 'Apollo 12' found favour with the early skinheads, and in 1972 he returned to Island Records, recording reggae versions of The Rolling Stones' 'Tumblin' Dice' and John Lennon's 'Jealous Guy,' although they met with little success. During this period, he regularly had releases on Pama and Pioneer Internacional label, Camel Records, and one single on Hot Lead Records. He had greater success in Jamaica, however, with 'Hail The Man,' a tribute to Emperor Haile Selassie, which was popular with the increasing Rastafari following.

One of the most popular and high profile of Jamaican reggae vocalists, Gregory Isaacs was a rough diamond who clawed his way out of the harsh western Kingston ghetto with an instantly recognisable voice that was wonderfully emotive, expressing both his toughness and determination for betterment, as well as the bleeding heart of a vulnerable lover. 'New Dance' is one of the excellent mid-1990s dancehall albums expertly produced by Anthony Dehaney, alias Bunny Gemini, working as usual with the Firehouse Crew, this time with Fatman Thompson of King Tubby's studio at the mixing desk and guitarist Lascelles Beckford of the Gifted Roots band as special guest. As usual, Gregory rides the rhythms with considerable aplomb, feeling completely natural atop the hard-edged rhythms and tackling a range of topics along the way. Much of the album deals with love lost, love gained, and love deferred; 'Say A Special Prayer' revamps the evergreen 'Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On' and 'New Dance' salutes the allure of dancehall music in the open air. This is one of Mr Isaacs' better offerings from the mid-1990s, worth getting to know if you're not already familiar with it, and a must-have if you've worn out your original copy.

JAH THOMAS - DANCE HALL CONNECTION
Deejay Jah Thomas was one of the creative figures making a dramatic impact on the Kingston sound system scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the rhythms he laid at Channel One studio with the Roots Radics helping to steer reggae towards the emerging dancehall style. Voicing and mixing his work at King Tubby's studio, typically with the young upstart engineer known as Scientist, Thomas got his start as a quick-witted deejay in the vibrant sound system scene of western Kingston, making his recording debut in 1976 with 'Midnight Rock,' a hit that became the name of his record label, once he shifted to producing his own work. 'Dance Hall Connection,' which first surfaced in 1983, is easily one of his best LPs, Thomas ably riding the rough Radics rhythms with style. The title track is a variant of the 'Boneman Connection' theme that references dancehall's grounding in sound system culture, 'Friday Night Jamboree' salutes the music's potent allure on a top cut of the 'Entertainment' rhythm, and 'Let Him In' implores the gateman to allow an impoverished dreadlocks into the dance; 'Nigger Skank' warns against wrongdoers, 'Joker Smoker' pokes fun at those who can't handle their herb, and 'Living In Jamaica' describes various aspects of lifestyle on the island. Elsewhere, Thomas enters boasting territory on 'Cool Profile,' disses combative women on 'Jealous,' recounts his girlfriend's dubious antics on 'Gal A Laugh' and implores another not to forget him once she emigrates. Flash it, Jah Thomas! This is musical murder!
