BERBERIAN, JOHN -ENSEMBLE- - MUSIC OF THE MIDDLE EAST
Best known for his proficiency on the oud, John Berberian has been releasing music since the early-1960s. While attending New York's Columbia University, Berberian made his professional musical debut playing the oud in support of violinist Reuben Sarkisian. While completing an MBA from Harvard, Berberian managed to find the time to become a staple on the Manhattan nightclub scene. In 1964 he was signed to Bob Shad's New York-based Mainstream Records, where he recorded a pair of Middle Eastern-themed instrumental collections. Those were followed by a pair of albums for George Goldner's Roulette and Jerry Schoenbaum's Verve Forecast. 'Music Of The Middle East' was originally released in 1966 on Roulette and showcased all of the composer brilliancy. The group he formed to perform the traditional music of Turkey, Armenia, Greece, Arabia and North Africa, succeeded in creating a vividly exotic blend of rhythms, melodies and improvisations into an early global beat. Still a breathtaking experience.

After we wrapped I combined both my solo session and the Bros session and released in as one record called 'Saved By Magic' on my label Duna Records. That was 2005. Now I'm re-releasing this record on HPS and I've decided to separate the two sessions into their original bodies of work. My solo session and the Bros session. I mostly did this because I feel the Bros deserve to have something of their own as they were a magical band. I also just thought it would be cool. After many delays, Sorcerer is please as punch to finally reissue the debut LP from 1987 by Milwaukee space-rock gods, F/i: 'Why Not Now?... Alan!' Available for the first time on the format since its initial release, it remains a Holy Grail item for lovers of cosmic rock & roll sounds from Underground Amerika in the 1980s. F/i had been churning out tape upon tape of experimental electronics since the early '80s. Influenced by krautrock (particularly Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel) and the harsh noise of industrialists Throbbing Gristle and early SPK, by the mid '80s they morphed into a fully fledged "rock" band, albeit one incorporating all of the above.
This LP is the perfect synthesis of these sounds: grimy, lo-fi "rock" with elements of industrial clang and extended, Hawkwind-ish space-rock jams; from the two-step cosmic churn of 'Electric Waltz' to the `Neubauten-style bang and bash of 'Zombie Theme'. In early winter of 2021, Lauri Ainala discovered a graveyard of glass negatives beneath the abandoned and dilapidated building known as the Solmu house. Erosion had already done its job, and many of the glass plates that were nearly a hundred years old had been wiped clean. In some of the pictures, time had painted ghostly and tattered shadows of the figures, beckoning forth others who had already been buried once before. Inspired by these pictures, new music began to emerge, which from the beginning felt like a continuation of Paavoharju's first two albums in terms of style, soundscapes, and atmosphere. 'Yön Mustia Kukkia' sprouted from the decayed edges of the glass negatives, giving birth to the third part of the trilogy recorded for Fonal Records. Anniina Saksa, who has been singing in the live lineup of Paavoharju in recent years, channels ethereal worlds and serves as the driving force behind this album. Saksa has also written most of the lyrics on the album that wonderfully capture the spirit of the glass negatives. Joining in are Toni Kähkönen, Joose Keskitalo, and Johannes Pitkänen, the prides of Savonlinna, also known from the previous Paavoharju albums 'Yhä Hämärää' and 'Laulu Laakson Kukista.' The dialogue between the new and the old takes place on many levels. Ainala discovered recordings that were thought to be destroyed twenty years ago: sensitive poems spoken by Jenni Yaber and Mimosa Virtanen's virtuosic singing. Expanding the sound palette and serving as a unifying element are Teemu Eerola's violin parts. Although the material for the album was recorded in different parts of Finland, it was threaded together in Savonlinna, on Ainala's old desktop computer and over 20-year-old software such as ModPlug Tracker and Cool Edit. Some of the album's hum and buzzing are formed from glass negatives transformed into sound. The album art was created by visual artist Sini Kosonen. She captured details revealed by the glass negatives through various magnifying and distorting lenses, creating a melancholic, and ghostly atmosphere fitting the album. In addition to Ainala, Rautavaara and Olli Aarni serve as producers. The album's title, 'Yön Mustia Kukkia' (Black Flowers of the Night), and most of the lyrics for the title track were conceived by Ainala's eight-year-old daughter, Leppä.

Rocky's Pride & Joy began in a cursed railway cottage in the western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia in mid 2020. Unexplained appearances of handprints, falling candles, disquieting sounds in the night, and vivid dreams of a tortured previous tenant haunted the residence for 12 months while the band wrote their first collection of songs including 'Crawl' and 'Time's Up.' With a friendship formed between vocalist/guitarist Brenton Wilson, drummer Jessi Tilbrook and bassist Dominic Ventra at Jessi's rock'n'roll club night, the trio's unbridled love for doom and fuzz led them to explore their collective vision and bring their first live performance to life at the end of 2020. Now in 2023, after a slew of live shows, the release of 'Time's Up' and 'Future Self' and months of writing and recording, the band have signed their debut album 'All The Colours Of Darkness' to international label Electric Valley Records, set for release in late 2023. Recorded at Adelaide's Twin Earth Studio, the band have continued their exploration of the dark side of life on this 8 track LP. Occult rituals, parasites, paranormal encounters and cold hard revenge are just a few themes covered on the album. SUN DIAL - MESSAGES FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
The 10th album by the UK's cultband Sun Dial! Sun Dial is the vehicle of guitarist and singer Gary Ramon, who started recording in the eighties as The Modern Art. He changed the name to Sun Dial when forming his live band in 1990. 'Messages From The Mothership' takes it's inspiration from Gary Ramon catching sight of a UFO in desolate marshland at the age of fourteen. This gives way to a theme throughout which is especially prevalent on side two. There are elements of Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Hawkwind but the album has all the elements of Sun Dial's 'Other Way Out' and those in the know are calling it their best work since then. After Sulatron released some krautrock influenced albums by Sun Dial (and the spaced out Quad album, Gary's old sideproject) it's back to guitar-psych and the tracks have Gary's unmistakable vocal and guitar work interspersed with Hammond, Mellotron and various rare keyboards. Side one has well crafted, shorter tracks which could all be singles in their own right. Side two leans more to the progressive and krautrock, culminating in possibly Gary's best ever guitar work on the finale, 'Saucer Noise.' His astonishingly intricate soloing sounds like a man possessed by an otherworldly force. 'Messages From The Mothership' is a focused but 'out there' album which will please Sun Dial fans and surely win them a generation of new followers. The LP comes on 180gr black recycled wax made in Germany, limited to 300 copies! The CD comes in 4-page digifile, limited to 300 copies! The CD includes an aural easter egg.

Reissue of the band's sole album, originally released in 1968 on Capitol Records. The record is a mixture of light psychedelic pop and folk. The band broke up shortly after failing to achieve commercial success or critical acclaim. The following year Artie Kornfeld, the record engineer of the album, went on to be the music producer of the Woodstock festival in 1969. Debbie Harry went on to join The Stillettos in 1974 and other bands until subsequently achieving success in 1976 fronting the new wave band Blondie.

In early winter of 2021, Lauri Ainala discovered a graveyard of glass negatives beneath the abandoned and dilapidated building known as the Solmu house. Erosion had already done its job, and many of the glass plates that were nearly a hundred years old had been wiped clean. In some of the pictures, time had painted ghostly and tattered shadows of the figures, beckoning forth others who had already been buried once before. Inspired by these pictures, new music began to emerge, which from the beginning felt like a continuation of Paavoharju's first two albums in terms of style, soundscapes, and atmosphere. 'Yön Mustia Kukkia' sprouted from the decayed edges of the glass negatives, giving birth to the third part of the trilogy recorded for Fonal Records. Anniina Saksa, who has been singing in the live lineup of Paavoharju in recent years, channels ethereal worlds and serves as the driving force behind this album. Saksa has also written most of the lyrics on the album that wonderfully capture the spirit of the glass negatives. Joining in are Toni Kähkönen, Joose Keskitalo, and Johannes Pitkänen, the prides of Savonlinna, also known from the previous Paavoharju albums 'Yhä Hämärää' and 'Laulu Laakson Kukista.' The dialogue between the new and the old takes place on many levels. Ainala discovered recordings that were thought to be destroyed twenty years ago: sensitive poems spoken by Jenni Yaber and Mimosa Virtanen's virtuosic singing. Expanding the sound palette and serving as a unifying element are Teemu Eerola's violin parts. Although the material for the album was recorded in different parts of Finland, it was threaded together in Savonlinna, on Ainala's old desktop computer and over 20-year-old software such as ModPlug Tracker and Cool Edit. Some of the album's hum and buzzing are formed from glass negatives transformed into sound. The album art was created by visual artist Sini Kosonen. She captured details revealed by the glass negatives through various magnifying and distorting lenses, creating a melancholic, and ghostly atmosphere fitting the album. In addition to Ainala, Rautavaara and Olli Aarni serve as producers. The album's title, 'Yön Mustia Kukkia' (Black Flowers of the Night), and most of the lyrics for the title track were conceived by Ainala's eight-year-old daughter, Leppä.

The 10th album by the UK's cultband Sun Dial! Sun Dial is the vehicle of guitarist and singer Gary Ramon, who started recording in the eighties as The Modern Art. He changed the name to Sun Dial when forming his live band in 1990. 'Messages From The Mothership' takes it's inspiration from Gary Ramon catching sight of a UFO in desolate marshland at the age of fourteen. This gives way to a theme throughout which is especially prevalent on side two. There are elements of Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Hawkwind but the album has all the elements of Sun Dial's 'Other Way Out' and those in the know are calling it their best work since then. After Sulatron released some krautrock influenced albums by Sun Dial (and the spaced out Quad album, Gary's old sideproject) it's back to guitar-psych and the tracks have Gary's unmistakable vocal and guitar work interspersed with Hammond, Mellotron and various rare keyboards. Side one has well crafted, shorter tracks which could all be singles in their own right. Side two leans more to the progressive and krautrock, culminating in possibly Gary's best ever guitar work on the finale, 'Saucer Noise.' His astonishingly intricate soloing sounds like a man possessed by an otherworldly force. 'Messages From The Mothership' is a focused but 'out there' album which will please Sun Dial fans and surely win them a generation of new followers. The CD comes in 4-page digifile, limited to 300 copies! The CD also includes an aural easter egg.

Memphis' The Grifters made some of the finest recordings of Clinton-era America, with a number of albums on labels such as Shangri-La (their second and third LPs) and then Sub Pop for their remaining two albums. The album known as 'Escape' was originally released on the New York no wave label Infidelity in 1981, and has never been reissued in any form since. Sorcerer presents a first-time reissue of this very special recording. Remastered by Mikey Young and fully authorised by Jody Harris and Robert's brother, Van, it is reissued in an edition of 600 copies. Jody made his name on the NY scene mainly through his work with the legendary avant-funksters The Contortions, while Robert Quine, who sadly
passed away in 2004, was one of the most acclaimed guitarists of his day, noted for his work with Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, John Zorn, Matthew Sweet
and many more. The two recorded 'Escape' in Quine's apartment with a whopping budget of $7 (that's what it cost Quine for the tape). The album sees them both engaging in guitar duels over a primitive drum machine, a kind of skeletal minimal-synth with avant-guitar excursions overhead. Outward-bound yet wholly listenable, the five tracks represent a great lost gem of the NYC underground scene of the day. This edition also comes with an inner sleeve featuring liner notes from Jody Harris detailing the recording, as well as exclusive photographs of the two. Recommended to fans of no wave, Rhys Chatham, Suicide and the music of Robert Quine and Jody Harris, of course.

Maurice Louca and his band Elephantine's album 'Moonshine' shines brightly with a live, raw, collective sound. Maurice Louca's band is incredible: double drummers Tommaso Cappellato and Özün Usta, Piero Bittolo Bon on alto, Daniel Gahrton on baritone, Isak Hedtjärn on clarinet, Rasmus Svale Kjærgård Lund on tuba, Rosa Brunello on bass, Els Vandeweyer on vibraphone and Louca on guitar/lap steel/synth. As Asher Gamedze puts it in his essay: "Abstract territories of freedom, always grounded, expansive, multiple, internally differentiated, and elephantine."
