'Surun Synty' ("Sorrow's Birth") is the 2023 album by Finnish folk artist Emmi Kuittinen. She sings and performs together with Antti Rask (vocals, ukulele, cello), Mimmi Laaksonen (wind instruments, harmonium, vocals) and Kirsi Vinkki (fiddle, bowed lyra and vocals). On her previous album 'Itken Ja Laulan' ("I weep and sing"), she observed the Karelian and Ingrian lament tradition from a musician's perspective. On this album album she deals with the theme of sorrow more widely. Her music has layers from old runosongs and laments to more modern songs and schlagers. Beside Emmi's own compositions and lyrics there is material from Karelia, Ingria, Finland and Sweden.

On the album, she combines the historical fiddler recordings from the archives with dance, movement and play to create completely her own sound. The album tracks were created for Lajunen's stage projects.

"one of the highlights for me was that I picked up my sax, walked around the corner and got on stage, plugged in and played a festival. How often does that happen?". The band played a storming set.

BAKLAVA - FROM SKOPJE WITH LOVE
Baklava from Skopje, Northern Macedonia plays spiritual and danceable folk music. The band have been active in the Balkan world music scene for almost 20 years. Originally, they started out as a quartet that mainly interpreted traditional Macedonian folk songs. But soon the musicians developed their own style and composed their pieces themselves. Baklava are open to musical influences from all over the world. The band's trademark is the numerous instruments, including the traditional Macedonian long-necked lute tambura, the kaval flute and oriental frame drum daf, beside bagpipes, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, accordion and ukulele. Comes on yellow vinyl.
