'Frutos Del País' (1972) is released now on vinyl, from the original IRT masters! Frutos Del País was born from the union of two Chilean rock bands, Los Picapiedras and Beat 4. Their sound was quite advanced for the time, their song 'Sin Ti' is still heard on the radio in Chile. The band's sound is very influenced by Procol Harum, but that doesn't detract from its tremendous quality. Maybe this song reminds them of Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale,' especially the sound of the Hammond organ. They did not have a direct musical relationship with the groups that in the early '70s fused rock influences with acoustic folk instruments, but Frutos Del País belonged to the generation that at that time changed the guard for this music in Chile. By genealogy, they were the continuation of bands from the previous decade, such as Los Picapiedras and the Beat 4. Their two albums, 'Frutos Del País' (1972) and the more unnoticed 'Y Volar... Y Volar' (1974) described a brief trajectory but immortalized by one of the authentic and most recognizable hymns in the history of rock in Chile: the ballad 'Sin Ti,' characterized by the Hammond organ of keyboardist Hugo Raymond and the evocative lyrics of singer Reinaldo Rhino González.

Any artist with the nerve to take on such a challenge was bound to appeal to Fruits de Mer, and with Rob Gould he already had 'history'... on the back of the 'Rob Gould Plays Pawn Hearts' LP, released through FdM in the summer of 2021, Rob had the idea of doing a follow-up album, covering another of his all-time favourite bands; but, which one? Over to Rob...
"'Nursery Cryme' had been a huge influence on me as a late-teen, and has stayed with me throughout my life as a musician, as have many of the earlier Genesis albums. But it was 'Nursery Cryme' in particular that I felt I knew best, having probably listened to it more than any other; another factor in choosing it over perhaps 'Foxtrot' or 'Selling England By The Pound,' was it seemed (not so in hindsight) infinitely more playable than the other Genesis classics.
In stark contrast to 'Pawn Hearts,' where I felt there was a lot of room for my own interpretation of the three epic songs on that album, with Genesis - summed up by the understated quote of Michael Rutherford - "If you play all the right notes, then the songs will sound quite good" - there was less room for improvisation, and I knew I had to get 'all the right notes' as close to the original versions as much as possible, albeit with my own unavoidingly personal style, and the unique feel and sounds of my friends. Over a period of weeks/months even, I painstakingly recorded a 'basic' template of each song... tempo maps, chords and notes, and added as any parts as I could in readiness for my musician friends to add their parts."

QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE - SHADY GROVE
The third long-player from San Francisco psychedelic icons Quicksilver Messenger Service (QMS) is a direct contrast from their previous discs. 'Shady Grove' (1969) is comprised mostly of shorter and self-contained pieces as opposed to the long and extended jams that were so prevalent on their self-titled debut (1967) and 'Happy Trails' (1969). Ironically, the one stretched-out instrumental is courtesy of their latest acquisition, Brit recording session guru Nicky Hopkins (keyboards). Another possible reason for the shift in style as well as personnel is the conspicuous absence of Gary Duncan (guitar), who is rumored to have been a "guest" of Bay Area law enforcement at the time. The band incorporate a number of different styles on the album. Kicking off the disc is an up-tempo rocking version of the traditional Appalachian folk song 'Shady Grove.' The QMS reading is highlighted by John Cipollina's trademark fluid fretwork and a familiar "Bo Diddley" backbeat, reminiscent of both 'Who Do You Love' and 'Mona' from the live ensemble LP 'Happy Trails.' In the three years since the last vinyl release by Ukrainian psych act Sex Blender, a hell of a lot has happened to the band and their country. The invasion of Ukraine has been a waking nightmare for the whole country leading to ordinary citizens taking up arms to defend their homeland in the war they never thought they would be fighting. In fact, Yurko, the band's guitarist, volunteered to help in his country's defence effort and has been on the frontline in the East of Ukraine pretty much since war broke out. It is a position he really shouldn't be in and one that most of us couldn't even imagine. As for the record itself, it is live album recorded back in the summer of 2021 featuring music from their two vinyl albums released previously on DRR ('Hormonizer' released in 2019 and 'The Second Coming' from 2020) plus a new track. The band describe the record and the time in which the tracks were played and recorded as: -"Summer '21 was full of joy and good vibes which we have recorded and captured forever on this live album. This record is a reminder of a happier, peaceful time that will we hopefully return back to soon. A massive thank you to all the brave soldiers and citizens of our homeland, Ukraine. Our thoughts are especially with our guitarist, Yurko, who is fighting on the frontline." Their free performance at Toronto City Hall Square a week prior to their O'Keefe concerts (July 31-5 August) would draw crowds estimated at from 10,000 to 40,000, figures exceeded only by the wordage covering the event in the three daily papers. Still without a hit single, but with a hot-selling debut album after two years on the road, the Dead would eventually become synonymous with the hippie spirituality for decades to come thanks to performances such as this which catches the band in that early, experimental phase with the joyful improvisation that would soon become their trademark.

The Airplane and the Dead reaped maximum exposure in the
press and on radio and TV during their Canadian visit. Their

the press scratched their heads and scrambled to comprehend
this new form of youthful rebellion, this was undoubtedly a peak period for Jefferson Airplane who had found momentum and
international fame after the addition of former Great Society
singer Grace Slick. Media coverage had catapulted 'Somebody
To Love' and 'White Rabbit' into the psychedelic heavens. While
Monterey was behind them (by about 2 months), Airplane were
on a commercial roll when they appeared in Canada to serve up

Word on the street among serious Zappaphiles is that the greatest line-up of all was the '74 Roxy & Elsewhere' band. For official releases this may be the case but the short lived group that immediately preceded 'Roxy' was, it seems, even better. Recruited specifically to play "difficult versions" and instrumental arrangements, the 1973 touring nine-piece was packed with virtuosos and the extended opening medley here is arguably one of the best Zappa ever committed to tape. George Duke's keyboard arsenal is centre stage, Ruth Underwood is already in place, her husband Ian is yet to split for Hollywood, Grand Wazoo trumpet star Sal Marquez features as does violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and one-in-a-million trombonist Bruce Fowler. His brother Tom, perhaps Zappa's most underrated bassist, and jazz drummer Ralph Humphrey complete the line-up.
The repertoire is taken mainly from 'Over-Nite Sensation' and
'Apostrophe' with additional pieces from 'Uncle Meat,' 'Hot Rats' and 'Chunga's Revenge.' Performed live at the Hordern Pavilion, Sydney, Australia on June 24th 1973 and broadcast by Circle J Radio.

In 1974 Frank Zappa performed 122 concerts in 105 cities across
16 countries. Even for a man who spent most of his working life
on the road it was a busy, perhaps his busiest, year. The group
captured here is the much loved Roxy band with Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ruth Underwood, George Duke, Tom Fowler and Chester Thompson, but stripped for some unknown reason of its second drummer, Ralph Humphrey. The music presented is taken mainly from Zappa's two contemporaneous releases, 'Overnite Sensation' (1973) and 'Apostrophe' (1974). Performed live at the Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, N.Y. November 15th, 1974, originally broadcast by WNEW-FM.

Fairport Convention's attempt to reinvigorate traditional English folk music succeeded against a cultural backdrop of loud guitars and nascent stadium rock similar to the folk revival across the Atlantic. With 'Liege & Lief' having given the band a foothold at home and in America, their next album 'Full House' would have to work harder to consolidate on the success, with the absence of Sandy Denny's vocal charisma and two new members. History has of course taught us that this revised line-up would become the definitive version and 'Full House' would become their most widely acclaimed album before Richard Thompson opted to move out. Touring across the USA with Jethro Tull at Fillmore West and Traffic and Mott The Hoople at Fillmore East, Fairport's US trek saw a revitalised band eager to please and comfortable in its own skin, and after 5 albums in the space of 2 years, that was a rarity. LUPEN CROOK - WILD NATURE
Lupen Crook first emerged in 2004 as a solo "anti-folk" style acoustic act in the Medway area, and has since generated a prolific catalogue of eclectic and genre-spanning projects.
Described both as a 'dazzling virtuoso' (NME), and 'splendidly uncompromising' (Clash Magazine), Lupen Crook has garnered a cultish reputation as both a musician and outsider artist. He made an an impact with NME and was included on NME: The Cool List 2005. Alongside his prolific musical output, his surreal and evocative oil paintings have recently been exhibited at Saatchi Gallery, London, and in solo and group shows across Thanet, Kent. 'Wild Nature' follows on from the darkly cinematic 'How Rotten The Teeth' (2020) and 2022's festive EP 'Christmas On Drugs And Other Cold Cuts.' Ever industrious, in addition to this full-length album, 2023 will also see the release of 'Mindfields,' a collection of short auto-fiction stories published by Cruel Design, an independent arts press founded by Crook with his Sex Cells collaborator, Willow Vincent. Lupen Crook's eighth full-length album, 'Wild Nature,' is a DIY, self-produced affair, recorded between Catford, South London, and his newfound home by the sea in Ramsgate, Kent.
Written and recorded on a secondhand nylon string guitar bought from a school teacher, 'Wild Nature' is a lyrically-focused record led by Lupen Crook's singular and sardonic voice.
Meditating on subjects as diverse as cancel culture, OnlyFans, BDSM, Ted Kaczynski, and modern art, Crook conjures a world that is at once as unpleasant and ugly as it is infused with magical and strangely uplifting observations.

The William Loveday Intention* is the latest incarnation of song and dance man Wild Billy Childish, who has been recording and performing since the 1977 punk explosion; notably with The Pop Rivets, The Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars, Thee Headcoats, The Buff Medways and CTMF, and many more! The 'intention' of The William Loveday group was to revisit some early tunes which Billy had imagined could be orchestrated. This was the beginning of a 'career in a year' when he accidentally recorded over 14 LPs during the lockdown at Jim Riley's Ranscombe Studios in Rochester. Between painting and poetry, Billy has released over 170 albums and many singles. Artists as diverse as Mudhoney and Kylie Minogue have cited Childish as an influence. 'Relikte Aus Der Zukunft' is the 2023 album by experimental German artist Baldruin. Growing up in a small Bavarian village rectory around 10 meters beside the church and serving as an altar boy; organ music, church bells, and spiritual chanting were very much present in Johannes Schebler's ears during his childhood years. This experience was probably the basis for his ongoing interest in transcendental and mysterious atmospheres, he recalls. Schebler started making music as Baldruin back in 2009 with DIY experimentations which were first released on tape, a 3" CDr and later on several LPs all over Europe (Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Finland, Netherlands, Slovakia), as well as in the USA and Japan. While in the beginning Baldruin's tracks were mostly created with acoustic instruments, later synthesizers and other electronic sound sources joined, expanding the sound palette and letting primordial and futuristic worlds merge organically into each other. Although 'Relikte Aus Der Zukunft' feels like a journey to the unknown, with constantly changing moods, all of the recordings were done in a small and improvised home studio in Schebler's living room in Wiesbaden, Germany, using mostly a single midi-keyboard for recording. The tracks are full of color and amazement, detailed and thorough when evoking the setting and conjuring the experience. They can be playful and bright, or suspenseful and ominous, until bursting into ritual and hallucination. The gloomiest soundscapes can jump into a ship fueled by retro sci-fi arpeggios, the solemn can turn to rejoice, and a star can shrink into a fireplace. The album is published by Buh Records in vinyl format in an edition of 300 copies. Mastered by Alberto Cendra at Garden Lab Audio. Cover art by Johannes Schebler.

Rosso Polare is Cesare Lopopolo and Anna Vezzosi, a contemporary improv duo from Milan, Italy, drawing from their complementary environments (the Italian countryside vs the city) to create a highly personal musical language merging field recordings, folklore and audio manipulation. Having both studied visual arts, their approach is equally rooted in a deep theoretical background, as well as an intuitive élan, while focused on researching counter-narratives regarding the depiction of the animal world. They strive to normalize the levels between human-produced music and natural biophony by making the listener aware of their indigenousness to nature.

In this album, Akira Umeda mixes 42 recordings, dated between 1988 and 2018, which, in a sense, reflect the incredible range of his creative work: from songs, to ambient music; from field recordings to prank calls. The cassette tapes, whose contents make up this double-LP, had been stored in Umeda's house in Sao José dos Campos, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Restless, and easily bored, Akira moved seamlessly from one activity to another - he was a little bit of everything (and nothing at all). Such people usually go unnoticed and unrecognized, something which Umeda found perfectly acceptable. Nevertheless, unlike most people, he had no right to see himself in this light - in the light of ephemerality and anonymity - for in everything he tried his hand at, he inevitably left an impressive and distinctive mark. The term cruising refers to the practice of seeking and obtaining instant, no-strings-attached sexual gratification with strangers. Akira Umeda was well-acquainted with this term, but his practice of it was not restricted to the aforementioned context. Rather it extended into all spheres of his life and work. A historian by training, he later became a ceramicist, a photographer, a visual artist, a draftsman, a graphic designer, a DJ, a musician, an audio technician, a writer, a researcher... He made forays into a myriad of artistic and academic fields - with a single intention: to achieve a specific objective and promptly exit stage left, as it were.

'TAPE MUSIC, SOUND EXPERIMENTS AND FREE FOLK SONGS BY CHILDREN FROM FREINET CLASSES - 1962-1982.' France, early sixties: the Mouvement de l'École moderne is in full bloom. Relying on the experiments and writings of its founder, the educationist Célestin Freinet, this consortium of teachers is about to give empirical evidence proving that another approach to music in school can be fruitful, distancing itself from government directions. As the wish to encourage free expression was central in the Freinet philosophy, arts and crafts were given more importance at school; in this regard, singing and music had a part to play, just as much as writing or drawing. While classrooms filled with a joyful jumble of sound-making objects (springs, bottles and basins, dismantled piano frames, drums, bamboos and the first DIY electronics), singular forms of music started ringing out: wild improvising, delicate a-cappella singing, clanks and dissonant string hammerings, basic experiments with magnetic tapes or evanescent folk songs.
This approach might seem surprisingly ahead of its time, but what is even more astonishing is that physical traces of these experiments can still be listened today. Between 1962 and 1982, recordings collected from schools everywhere around France were compiled on dozens of vinyl records. This compilation presents a selection of recordings from the 30+ records released between 1962 and 1982, to present these sound archives to a new audience. Includes 20-page booklet with liner notes in French and English.

First issue since 1969 of the Malombo Jazz Makers' unknown third album. Liner notes featuring interviews with Julian Bahula and Lucky Ranku. Lucas 'Lucky' Madumetja Ranku (1941-2016) was one of the greatest African guitarists of his generation. He first made his name with the Malombo Jazz Makers - the successor group to the legendary Malombo Jazzmen, formed in Mamelodi township by guitarist Philip Tabane, drummer Julian Bahula and flautist Abbey Cindi. When Tabane left the Jazzmen in 1965, Bahula and Cindi called on Lucky to replace him, and the Malombo Jazz Makers were born. Building on the popularity and success of the original Malombo Jazzmen, the Malombo Jazz Makers become immensely popular, touring widely, winning numerous jazz competitions, and recording two successful albums for the Gallo label. The deep and hypnotic 'Down Lucky's Way' was their third album. Recorded in 1969, it was the first Malombo Jazz Makers album to feature additional instruments, and the first to feature Abbey Cindi on soprano saxophone as well as flute. But more than anything else, 'Down Lucky's Way' is a transfixing showcase for Lucky Ranku's sui generis guitar virtuosity. Quite different from their previous recordings, the album shifted the Jazz Makers' sound toward hypnotic, extended compositions, layered by organ bass and guitar overdubs. Of all the Malombo Jazz Makers recordings, 'Down Lucky's Way' is the deepest of mood, and the richest of vision. However, through one of the erasures that are ubiquitous in South African musical history under apartheid, it seems that the record may not ever have been properly issued. Original copies are outrageously rare - only a few are known among collectors. When we asked Lucky about the album, he was unaware it had ever been released, and had never seen a copy. Perhaps it was pulled; perhaps it was pulped; perhaps Gallo simply took their eye off the ball. Nobody knows, but it is not impossible that the apartheid authorities were involved, for by 1969, the Malombo Jazz Makers were well known to them. Fully licensed from Julian Bahula.

In demand as jazz soloists and worked off their feet as the horn section on the burgeoning session scene, The Brecker
Brothers band was their showcase and their recreation. With six albums for Arista records between 1975 and 1981, they had managed reasonable sales and even a couple of minor hits, but live performance was the optimal way to experience them. The band here are all heavy-rollers and core members of the close knit community of versatile jazz/rockers that shuttled between LA and NYC. Guitarist Steve Khan is on particularly fine form. Performed live at the Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, OH in 1977, for The New World Of Jazz radio show broadcast by WMMS-FM.

As the 1960s advanced Miles had been quick to dismiss so-called "free jazz", believing that the abolition of any kind of swing or groove made music meaningless. He was still searching though and keen to push the music he loved to its meaningful limits. Roland Kirk is known for his ability to play several saxophones

The substantive concert here, from Prague, was performed just three months after John Coltrane's death and the great man's presence can be felt throughout, not least when the enthusiastic crowd demand more and they are rewarded with a heartfelt 'Afro Blue'/'Bessie's Blues' medley. The original incarnation of the Mahavishnu Orchestra was
extraordinarily successful. Their debut LP 'Inner Mounting
Flame' (1971), achieved crossover nirvana, climbing the
Billboard Jazz chart before breaking into the top 100 on
the rock chart. Performed a year later and just two months
after the sessions for their second studio LP 'Birds Of Fire,'
this live appearance demonstrates that McLaughlin's vision,
notorious for its intensity, also encompassed profound
dynamic shifts and melodic beauty. At their best McLaughlin,
violinist Jerry Goodman, keyboard innovator Jan Hammer,
bassist Rick Laird and powerhouse drummer Billy Cobham
were untouchable as a live act. Unfortunately for them after
two full-on years and 500 concerts the band imploded.
Fortunately for us, one of the best of their best nights, live
at Berkeley Community Theatre, CA, on November 9th 1972
was broadcast by KFAT-FM radio.

The concert was performed live at the Thirteenth Annual Berkeley Jazz Festival, University of California, Berkeley Campus, CA on the 25th of May, 1979 and broadcast by KFAT-FM.

Born in 1939 in Orlando, Florida, Betty (who as a teenager worked with Big Maybelle) is mainly known for her Jubilee and Sansu recordings. Her LP 'Soul Perfection' was originally released in 1969 by UK label Action.

Fusing traditional Brazilian music, psychedelia, rock and a good dose of pure experimentalism, they quickly became giants both in Brazil and in the outer fringes of pop music, where they have managed to reign supreme for the past four decades. Not an easy task in such a crowded arena. Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Jorge Ben, Tom Zé, AND Os Mutantes? What do these people put in their drinking water? The band went on to release several more albums, but this one was their magnum opus.

NICO - THE DRAMA OF EXILE
Fully remastered and licensed, limited to 500 copies on 180 gr. vinyl. After the 1974 release of 'The End,' the magnetic and controversial Warhol muse went on a fruitful partnership with French director Philippe Garrel, for almost seven films. Back in New York in 1979 she started to perform again live, appearing firstly at the CBGB with John Cale and musical partner Lutz Ulbrich (former guitarist of Agitation Free and Ash Ra Tempel). Back in France, she met young and talented Corsican bassist Philippe Quilichini who produced her comeback, 'Drama Of Exile,' in 1981. The album was released twice, in two different versions. Hereby we present the second, appearing in 1983, after a legal controversy was settled with Aura Records that released the first issue. While the first press was a 9-track offering, this second issue excludes 'Purple Lips,' but adds the tracks 'Saeta' and 'Vegas' released on a 7" single in 1981. For this album, Nico recorded covers of the Velvet Underground's 'I'm Waiting For The Man' and David Bowie's 'Heroes.'

Another psych holy grail finally seeing the light of day. Oasis was an American rock band from Marin County, California active in the 1970s. They eventually morphed from the prog-folk ensemble R J Fox. Their self-titled debut album was released as a private press in 1973 by the Cranbus label in a small run of 150 copies, imagine that... The record was in fact never released in the States but only in Canada, such a mystery today. Coming from the west coast the band - led by female vocalist and eclectic piano player Sherry Fox - was certainly informed by local stalwarts (Ultimate Spinach and Jefferson Airplane may come to mind) but had certain similarities with the Allman Brothers country rock guitars and David Crosby vocal harmonies circa 'If I Could Only Remember My Name'. Not to mention the key jazz folk albums of Joni Mitchell. Here's a superb psychedelic folk rock manifesto, still fascinating and over the top, in the name of universal love.

Gritty adaptations of Carl Perkins' 'Blue Suede Shoes,' Ray Charles' 'I Got A Woman' and Little Richard's 'Tutti Frutti' helped make it the first rock'n'roll album to top the Billboard charts, where it remained unchallenged for a full ten weeks. The iconic cover image with its distinctive lettering, showing Presley brandishing his acoustic guitar, helped embed the instrument in rock mythology too, indelibly changing how we conceive of the genre and its axemen. Elvis Presley proved that our hero was already the undisputed King of Rock'n'Roll, just as he still is today.

2023 repress! 'Radios Appear' was Radio Birdman's first full-length album. It was originally released in 1977 on the Trafalgar label, which was founded specifically to release their records. In addition to mail order, the album was literally distributed by hand and out of the back of cars. The band thus wrote the Australian handbook on DIY independent music. The LP was hailed as a breakthrough album in Australian music, a turning point after the scene's early and mid seventies stagnation. 'Radios Appear' was given a 5-star review in Rolling Stone, and the album gave the band a needed boost to depart Sydney as a national touring entity, while still maintaining their renegade status. Comes with remastered sound from the original tapes. The standard jacket closely reproduces the original artwork and the black and white innersleeve features band photos. High energy rock to be filed next to MC5, Stooges, Saints!
