'Am I Dreaming?' is the 2023 album by the very prolific Finnish psych/space/kraut project Astral Magic that has been channelling psychedelic and spacey music from other dimensions since March 2020. This time the inspiration came from late '60s/early '70s psych/garage/prog rock (think early Floyd, Stones, The Beatles, 13th Floor Elevators, The Byrds, The Who, The Zombies, Hawkwind etc.). As usual, Santtu Laakso (ex-Dark Sun) got help from international cast of psych rock veterans like for example Dr. Koch from Vibravoid who also made the cover design! This very cool sounding album was recorded
2020-2021 in Finland, Germany, UK and USA. The high quality 140g LP's were pressed at the new plant Helsingin Levypuristamo, the first one in Finland for almost 30 years. Limited to 200 copies on black vinyl. All along with classic blues standard 'Tobacco Road' (covered by anyone from The Animals to Brother Jack McDuff via Jefferson Airplane) and contemporary folk number 'Morning Dew' (originally penned by Bonnie Dobson) the record shows a series of original numbers verging on the happiest side of jangle-rock with a 'nuggets' feel all in all.

Behind the Cosmic Ground project is Dirk Jan Müller, who has released a number of psychedelic/krautrock/electronic recordings with his band Electric Orange over the past 30 years. Mainly analogue synthesizers and modular systems, Mellotron, 1960s Farfisa organs, analogue string ensembles from the '70s as well as bass and guitar are used in the Cosmic Ground. The mostly very dark music is 99% electronic in nature, supplemented by some self-recorded atmospheres from different environments that have been processed electronically. The 6 tracks on 'Isolate' offer a musical spectrum from polyrhythmic sequencer lines combined with real tape echo, ambient and free format atmospheres to polyphonic and multiply modulated drones.
All in the sound is very much of the 1970s. You'll look in vain for preset sounds from digital synthesizers or the prefabricated loops and sequences that are common these days; analog sequencers dominate here! The cover artwork was created by the French artist Thierry Moreau, known for his work for Univers Zero, Neuschwanstein and Heldon. It underlines the dark mood of the music.

The album 'Omega I', released in 1973, was a compilation of songs from 'Élö' and the album 'Omega 5', which were released in the Eastern Bloc in the same year. After a few excursions into psychedelic rock realms, Omega presented itself again on 'III' at the end of 1974: Nine crisp hard rock numbers, only one exceeded the four-minute mark. In order to appeal to a broader audience in the future, the pieces were stripped down, instrumental solo efforts were limited.

Lance Rock Records couldn't be happy to remerge with this record. If there was ever a cassette that deserved a vinyl reissue it's Color Me Psycho's 'Kiss Me Then...' The cassette was a mainstay for those in the know. It hit all the marks. Great 'Famous Monsters' inspired graphics. Thee most catchy songs that were equally simple, memorable and captivating. Talk to someone that had the tape and they are likely still blessed with 'Black Corvair' as an earworm. Musically the band was well steeped in the best influences. Although its influences are noticeable, they never become dominant. Color Me Psycho never sounds like the records the band loved. It stands alone. The closest reference point is the MC5 'Back In The USA.' Not in terms of sound but power and timing. It's short and carries a wallop. Think Mike Tyson in the '80s. Who needs a twelve round match when you can send a guy packing in round two? The record has been painstakingly remastered by Arlen Thompson of Wolf Parade and Anunnaki fame. It begs to be turned up as every track unfolds. This pressing is in luxurious red wax and limited to 100. The album jacket was designed and rebooted by
the world-famous Tom Bagley. Carefully crafted to capture the original cassette presence. The package also includes two gig posters from back in the day. One is for the cassette release party for a perfect tie in.

Formed in the early 2000's in Pécs, Southern Hungary, Psycho Mutants is a cult underground band in their country. Sali Sidibé (1959-2019) was a Malian singer and songwriter. Born in a village in the Wassoulou region of southern Mali, Sali Sidibé sang in Bambara. With her gutsy, neo-traditional vocals set to a unique blend of didai, sigui, and sogonikun dance rhythms, Sali Sidibé is one of Mali's greatest vocalists. Recording her first singles in the '60s, she helped to lay the foundation for the Wassoulou music of the '80s. Wassoulou is a genre of West African popular music named for the Wassoulou cultural area. Wassoulou music is performed mostly by women. Some recurring themes in the lyrics are childbearing, fertility, and polygamy. Instrumentation includes soku (a traditional fiddle sometimes replaced with modern imported instruments), djembe drum, kamalen n'goni (a six-stringed harp), karinyan (metal tube percussion) and bolon (a four-stringed harp). The vocals are often passionate and emphatic, and delivered in a call-and-response pattern. This is a reissue of a rare cassette from the '80s.

The singer-songwriter and pianist Nina Simone came to prominence in the late 1950s after she signed to the Bethlehem label for her debut album 'Little Girl Blue.' Her move to Coolpix Records, the audio subsidiary of Columbia Pictures, allowed her near total artistic control of her material and her lengthy tenure with the company brought plenty of popular album releases. The 1966 oddity 'Nina Simone With Strings' was issued by Coolpix a couple of years after she left the company to begin recording for Philips; a strange mix of live recordings and studio outtakes, released without her knowledge or permission where the presence of orchestral strings on several tracks gives the album its title and overriding theme.

The versatile singer, songwriter, pianist, musical arranger and civil rights activist Nina Simone was one of the most iconic of all jazz performers. Operating in a range of genres, from folk, blues and rhythm'n'blues to pop, gospel and classical, Simone issued over 40 albums during a long and successful career, though bipolar disorder dramatically affected her later years. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933, she was one of eight children in a poor black family. Coolpix's 1963 release, 'Nina's Choice,' was titled in reference to the fact that Simone chose the entire contents, drawing from a range of pop, folk, blues and show tunes, all interpreted and delivered in her uniquely expressive style.

The first official reissue -or in most cases, re-release of any kind- of these Cambodian rock recordings since their initial release as singles. Comes with an 8-page full color booklet with info and photos supplied by Sinn Sisamouth's surviving family. There were no deluxe studios for the musicians who recorded the devastating tracks contained herein. Nothing so grand. Most of these tracks were recorded live, with traditional instruments finding a place alongside any keyboards or guitars that could be found. And yet, it was the experiments of Khmer rock musicians which transformed the nightlife of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh - and which many years later continue to seduce listeners around the world with their groovy sound. The music is wild and anarchic, rhythmic and undulating, or sweet and lyrical, but always moving and with that deep soulfulness, regardless of actual musical genre or style, that is the hallmark of the best and most important music. The lyrics often tell stories of angst, death, betrayal and sorrow. But there is a very real, deep, inescapable tragedy in these grooves as well. Alas, in 1975 came an entirely different type of transformation: the rise to power in Cambodia of the fanatical, anti-Western Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot. Within roughly four years, implementing their "concept of Year Zero," Pot and his regime were responsible for the deaths of an estimated two million Cambodians (roughly 21% of the nation's population), many in the notorious "killing fields." Even the most famous and beloved Khmer musicians could not escape. Sinn Sisamouth, the "King of Khmer music"; Ros Sereysothea, the "Golden Voice of the Royal Capital"; and Pan Ron - all featured on this collection of songs written by the majestic Sinn Sisamouth - met their deaths at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. Jon Swain, who was the Sunday Times war correspondent in South Vietnam and Cambodia at the time, said: "Educated people, musicians, people with glasses... a lot were taken to the killing fields... so the great singers disappeared." To us, the richness and deep soulfulness of Cambodian music is akin perhaps to what was excavated from Ethiopia and embraced worldwide over the years thanks to the 'Ethiopiques' series - this despite the geographical and cultural distance between the two very different nations. It really is one world, not three.

Every burg in the 70's that had a steady supply of weed and electricity undoubtedly provided a birthing ground for the formation of bands influenced by the likes of Jerry Garcia and Lowell George, and the Delaware area was no different. What was different was that our subjects-at-hand got it together and in 1977 released an unassuming document for posterity, containing nothing but original, winding (dare we say "snake-like"?) compositions and good vibes throughout. Since then, the album has garnered accolades from the Acid Archives crowd and so we felt the time was right to give the group's efforts a proper (and properly licensed from the band) presentation, with an "old-style" heavy mini-LP sleeve and thick booklet containing pics, gig posters, song lyrics and liner notes by producer and long-time fan Gregor Alligator. Recently discovered 1972 Latin teen soul-funk-rock private press mega-rarity from rural New Mexico. Pressed in very small numbers, this previously unknown gem is a very accomplished mix of smooth gliding soul and up-tempo funk, complete with swirling Hammond organ and mellow harmonies to go with the fuzz and funk guitars. At the album's core, however, beats the heart of an adolescent small town garage rock combo. This six piece teen group, led by Rick Chavez and the smooth vocals of Ray Williams, features nine very catchy original tunes to go along with their very own funky version of the classic, 'Bo Diddley.' In 1974 the Continental label released a rare album, with the name of the band very big over the cover -Paulo Bagunça e a Tropa Maldita- that left a strong impression on a small underground portion of Brazilian youth. The band name was deliberately provoking: "Bagunça" means mess or confusion (big scandal), while "Tropa Maldita" means damned, or wicked soldiers. The media at the time were not creative - they called this sort of music "electric pop," an uninspired tag for an inspired album. The record contains different styles of songs, some with a special conception like 'Grinfa Louca' with its hallucination-inducing Afro beat. The record was futuristic for the era, mixing different influences, ranging from Jorge Ben to Traffic (if they had Afro percussion!), with jazz touches and elements of the funky sounds of the era. In a 1972 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Bagunça said he considered his music "something that comes from deep inside, from the heart, from my caverns, dreams and nightmares."

"Bossa 70 was the brainchild of Nilo Espinoza, a Peruvian musician with a Brazilian heart. Nilo, a classically trained musician, was the top flute player in Peru in 1960. In 1961 he was honored with a scholarship to Austria to study his instrument. It was during his five years in Europe that he developed a profound attraction for all forms of jazz. Upon his return to Peru in 1966, Nilo approached the best musicians he could find to form a group to play bossa-nova, the new music craze from Brazil. In 1968, the group changed their name to Bossa 70, to reflect the musical style they were going to offer. Their new singer was Carmen Rosa Basurco, a beautiful woman with an electrifying personality, who could sing in English, Portuguese and Spanish. As a means to promote their new name the group recorded a mini-LP with four fantastic songs (100 copies were pressed and giving as a prize during the concerts and to personal friends and family). In 1970, they recorded an LP for Philips (issued in Peru by El Virrey). The label pressed a mere 300 copies, which were sold quickly. The members went in their own musical directions in 1972 - Enrique "Pico" Ego Aguirre, leader of Los Shain's went on to form the band Pax; Otto De Rojas played keyboards on the Traffic Sound 'Tibbet's Suzettes' album; and Nilo Espinoza formed Nil's Jazz Ensemble, who went on to record the only great jazz funk LP from Peru.

Epic early to mid-1970's instrumental psychedelic space-rock from the Pyramid Records archive, said to be pseudonymous after-hours studio sessions featuring the biggest names on the Krautrock scene at the time; heavy drums, jamming guitars and Hammond organ: in short, and amazing improvised free-form trip of impressive magnitude, on par with the music of Krautrock heavyweights like Neu! and Gila. An adventurous atmosphere throughout, whether the result is hallucinogenic and jazzy ('Jupiter'), the heavy freak and roll of 'The Returning,' with crushing guitars and massive, repetitive almost funky rhythm, or the Jimi Hendrix-inspired 'Godhead Dance.' Booklet essay examines the controversy surrounding this and other recordings first made known to the world via Virgin Records' three disc "Unknown Deutschland" series of compilations from the 1990's, including the fact that one "Genius P Orridge" is named as producer of the Golem album. It's clear enough to all that Genius P Orridge is strangely similar to the name Genesis P Orridge, he of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV fame. The fact that the other names on the Golem album jacket lead nowhere only adds to the confusion. In any case, a deep and fascinating record, still fresh despite the years... and meant to be played loud. Quote: A space-rockin' hybrid of Gila and instrumental Hendrix type moves, Golem were another band from the lost Pyramid Records archive. Totally instrumental, and a feast for guitar fans... On first listen Golem comes across as a lost classic of Krautrock without a doubt, with a music that blends everything from Neu! to Novalis, and all crammed full of solos. The name may not instantly ring a bell, but you'll find Paul Gurvitz just about everywhere in the course of rock'n'roll music history. He first found success in the British outfit the Londoners, backing band for rock'n'roller Gene Vincent. He rose through the ranks playing in the Knack, and then Gun in 1967. Gun had a massive hit song 'Race With The Devil' and two cult albums. Paul then formed a hard rocking super-group called Three Man Army and released a string of influential albums. From there he found international success when he joined forces with former Cream and Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker in the Baker Gurvitz Army, one of the biggest rock super-groups of the '70s. Now he's back again and fully re-loaded with his album 'Sweetheart Land' which was a long time in the making. Gurvitz spent most of the 1980s and '90s writing and producing hit songs for such artists as Jody Watley, Five Star, Staci Q, Kim Wilde, Melba Moore, Jermaine Jackson, The Fat Boys, JellyBean, and Stacy Lattisaw, among others. While many artists from Paul Gurvitz's generation tread the same ground, he has consistently kept things new. And in fact, this album will surprise many fans. Not as loud and overproduced as his work from the past, Gurvitz has found a place somewhere between Americana roots rock and driving power pop with a mellow flavor, perfectly tailored for his soulful vocals and guitar playing. Paul Gurvitz is a one man army, a one man band, playing almost all of the instruments on every track.

The first (and so far only) live recording of a Peruvian rock band from the 1960's, and therefore of incredible importance to lovers of rock from that exciting scene! Those of you who already have Lion's previous Mads/Molesto release might remember the story of the Mads: early television performances in Peru; the chance sea-side encounter with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards that got the Mads the chance to go to England; Stones' manager Marshall Chess giving the Mads recording time in the Rolling Stones' studio and at Jagger's Stargroves castle. They played the Marquee, the Lyceum, the Roundhouse. They jammed with Steve Winwood and Brian Davison (The Nice). They played with Jeff Beck and Carmine Appice. Molesto's guitar player, Alex Ventura, worked in a clothing boutique alongside Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor. But before all the craziness in London, the Mads gave a farewell concert for their fans in Peru, on 18 December 1969, at the Auditorio del Colegio Santa Ursula. The recordings on this disc come from that show. One quick listen makes clear that the Mads demonstrated a lot of Jimi Hendrix Experience influence at this stage of their brief career. Still, it's clear straight away why the Stones were impressed, why Dennis Hopper told them during the intermission of this very concert how great they were (he wanted to hook them up with Phil Spector), and why they are legends of Peruvian rock. Heavy, hard, and loud. Two bonus tracks come from their sessions at the Stones' studio in London, and are in the same hard-edged vein. Limited to only 200 copies! 2004 album from Ptarmigan's Monte Nordstrom. 'After All' features material composed over five decades, including the debut of Ptarmigan material written prior to the release of their album. One such track is 'The Waiting,' a suite composed in 1969, but never recorded at the time. Hand-percussion and didgeridoo add a mystical quality to another "lost" Ptarmigan composition, 'Song To The East.' Solo passages feature fluid harmonica, and there is no mistaking Nordstrom's rich vocals and guitar playing, both of which seem to have attained greater depth with the passage of the years. There is a distinct retro vibe to the album, as indicated by Nordstrom's choice to use a vintage Mellotron, which provides an eerie, majestic ambience, at times recalling Procol Harum or an earthier Moody Blues. Lest we mislead you, we must point out that this is a well-produced, modern album. But it has a special quality, a feeling of past days, with a vibe that is perhaps reminiscent of the best moments of Neil Young's acoustic albums. This is certainly a return to form for Monte Nordstrom as an artist, and a fascinating companion to the reissue of the sole Ptarmigan album.

The pair soon signed to George Martin's Regal Zonophone label and the duo's sole LP was released in late 1971, fully infused with the US west-coast sound. A second long-player was produced by Martin but never released, featuring the additional talents of Mike Kellie (ex-Spooky Tooth), Micky Gallagher (pre-Ian Dury) and Rick Wills (pre-Foreigner), who would collectively go on to become Peter Frampton's Camel. This double-disc set compiles the 1971 LP and ten tracks from the unreleased follow-up, with liner notes and unreleased pictures.

A Turkish leprechaun by birth, with a childhood fully immersed in music and art, Jem first made his mark as vocalist/bassist/main songwriter for the Detroit power-trio legends Third Power. After the band drifted apart in 1972, a despondent Jem took up home recording, laying down hours of tape on a Teac 4-track. The best cuts were selected and 'Luckey Guy' was self-released in 1978, with Jem pasting up the gatefold covers and handling all sales himself in true DIY fashion. Fully licensed, limited to 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl. Miller Anderson is a guitarist and vocalist, born on April 12, 1945, in Houston, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Since cutting his musical teeth in bands with Ian Hunter (pre-Mott the Hoople) and Bill Bruford (pre-King Crimson and Yes), Anderson has been a member of such bands as the Keef Hartley Band, Savoy Brown, T. Rex, Mountain, the Spencer Davis Group, and in groups led by Deep Purple's Jon Lord and folk-rock balladeer Donovan. His 1971 debut 'Bright City' was released on the legendary Deram, sub-label of Decca that released new records from 1966 onwards for the likes of Moody Blues, Caravan, Camel and several British jazz-rock legends. The album is a brilliant example of modern folk with lush strings arrangements thanks to guitarist and producer William 'Junior' Campbell, leader of the Scottish pop-rock group The Marmalade. A brilliant songwriting alongside a pastoral feeling, gentle melodies and a solid background with several amazing players literally bridging the gap between contemporary pop and blues. Harold Beckett (John Surman, Graham Collier) on flugelhorn and Lyn Dobson (The Keef Hartley Band, The People Band, Third Ear Band) on flute were literally stalwarts of the British jazz-rock and experimental scene, their contributions is behind greatness. Same with keyboard player Mick Weaver another Keef Hartley alumni. The album - faithfully remastered - offers a vision of urban Scotland with a bluesy feel and it has to be ranked alongside the work of such luminaries as Donovan or Nick Drake.

SALAMANDER - THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (IT)
Fully licensed, limited to 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl. The biblical ten commandments are surely the main inspiration behind this concept album originally released on British independent label Young Blood in 1971. The one and only release by Salamander, a short-lived UK four piece , the album is a quintessential prog opera with a heavy effort on Hammond organ and lush orchestral arrangements. Comprised of Alister Benson (organ, vocals), Dave Chriss (bass), John Cook (drums) and Dave Titley (lead vocals, guitar), the band was often compared to The Moody Blues and Deep Purple Mark I. Even if the 10 tracks are inspired by the holy script, the band was not proven to be Christian rock itself. The album is a sublime pompous pop affair, with a good dose of fuzz guitars and brass section.

Repress! Glasgow's boogie proggers Tear Gas grew out of the Mustard band. Debut LP 'Piggy Go Getter' was a blend of hard boogie rock with psychedelic prog leanings and although their eponymous second album (from 1971) continued in roughly the same direction, the musicianship is far stronger here and the prog side of things more nuanced, as heard on songs like 'The First Time.' Somehow the deserved fame was not forthcoming, leading the group to morph into the Sensational Alex Harvey band and lead singer David Batchelor to a stellar production career. Yet, Tear Gas remains the best of their hard-to-find catalogue, appealing to hard rockers and prog fans alike.

Anonymous British funk studio outfit Ultrafunk was spearheaded by Blues & Soul magazine proprietor John Abbey, who ran a fashionable record shop and label called Contempo in London's West End during the 1970s; he conceived of the group as the UK counterpart to US studio bands like MFSB. Arranger Gerry Shury, who had worked with Barry White and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, drafted guitarist Chris Rae and bassist Frank McDonald (who often composed library music together) and future Rubettes drummer John Richardson to form the group, in situ. A lack of band photos, suggestive song titles and a predilection for American cover tunes led many to believe the band was US-based. Their self-titled debut LP is where the myth all begins, with a number of truly atmospheric and cinematic hard funk instrumentals, given added textural depth through full orchestration, including covers of Bill Withers' 'Use Me' and Stevie Wonder's 'Living In The City.' Though not quite as compelling as the better-known follow-up set, 'Meat Heat', there is still plenty to savour on Ultrafunk, making this debut
companion disc a must-have for all true funk afficionados.

Originally released in 1978, in the UK only on the Grove Music label, this is a very fine dub album. Every track is a real head nodder. Vivian Jackson (a.k.a. Yabby You) produced excellent riddims supplied by a youthful Sly & Robbie, before their unique sound was distilled, whilst Tubby and Prince Jammy provided the mixes. Tommy McCook, Skully, Chinna, Ansel Collins and Bernard Harvey supplied the high notes.
