DR. STRANGELY STRANGE - RADIO SESSIONS
Irish psychedelic folkies Dr. Strangely Strange were active from 1968-1971. Their two Joe Boyd-produced albums from that era, 'Kip Of The Serenes' (Island) and 'Heavy Petting' (Vertigo), are both highly sought after by collectors. In their heyday, the band recorded only two BBC radio sessions, a 'Top Gear' slot and an 'In Concert,' both with John Peel. Frustratingly, the BBC's tapes were wiped, but after extensive research with European collectors, TLAK has been able to locate off-air recordings of both sessions, which have been painstakingly restored. Added to these are brief radio sessions for Dutch and Danish radio sourced from the original recordings, as well as a Dublin rehearsal take of 'Sign On My Mind' featuring Gary Moore, a friend of the band and guest on 'Heavy Petting.' Limited gatefold vinyl pressing with 4-page illustrated booklet featuring previously unpublished photos compiled by Strangelies biographer Adrian Whittaker.

A concept album in which a sorcerer bargains for immortality with Orcus, God of the Underworld, and makes a deal that goes horribly wrong, 'Mind Palace Of The Mushroom God' was an instant hit with its eye-blasting artwork and heavy "wizard sludge" riffs. The band was signed to Forbidden Place Records within days and the first vinyl pressing sold out soon after. Now, the story comes to an epic conclusion in this double album as the sorcerer seeks the mystical gem that will free him from the curse of Orcus. McGrew, Moonbrook, and Mavra are joined by synth lord Rama to weave this eldritch tale of dark, mind-bending magic. Hypnotic riffs flow seamlessly into dreamlike interludes, transporting the listener through the many shifting moods of this psychedelic doom epic. Dungeon Weed's "wizard sludge" is unique a heavy doom sound that touches on stoner rock, black metal, dungeon synth, prog, and more. Truls Mörck has a background as a guitarist in Graveyard and Slowgold as well as guitarist, singer and songwriter in Den Stora Vilan. In 2015 he released his first solo album and shortly thereafter he returned to Graveyard, this time as bass player. After a few years of waiting, it's finally time for his second solo LP 'What A Time To Be Alive'. The sound is inspired by the soft rock of the '70s and you can hear echoes of Harry Nilsson and George Harrison mixed with dreamy digital keyboards and a modern, relaxed, psychedelic production. "We have tried to create a soft and easy-to-listen-to sound that somehow still feels interesting and well-made. My lyrics are probably quite self-absorbed and introspective. 'MEXICO MAGICO COSMICO, EL OMBLIGO DE LA LUNA' - Following a decade playing in Mexico City's psychedelic rock scene, Luis Perez's early solo work was a mixture of sounds derived from his vast array of pre-Hispanic and ethnographic wind and percussion instruments which he managed to blend with electronic devices including tape delay units, electric guitars and synthesisers. During this time, he was given the name Ixoneztli (or "one who makes music") by the legendary curandera Pachita and her son Enrique, to whom, like Alejandro Jodorowsky before him, Luis served as assistant. In 1981, the Mexican government became very interested Perez's work and sponsored the production of what became the first recording of the fusion of native Mexican instruments with electronics - entitled 'Ipan In Xiktli Metztli', in the Nahuatl language, or 'En El Ombligo De La Luna' in Spanish ('In The Navel Of The Moon'). The impact of this recording and subsequent performances among media, ethnomusicologists and audiences alike established Luis Perez Ixoneztli as a precursor to a new musical genre followed by a generation of young Mexican musicians playing ethno-rock, ethno-jazz, ethno-experimental and the like.

'Lean Into The Breeze' is Sweet Chariot's second album, but it's their first for Who Can You Trust? Records. These songs were tracked and mixed on a vintage Tascam 388 analog eight track by producer and recording artist Walker Phillips. Though the band's eponymous debut flirted with '70s inspired California country rock, this album finds the foursome dialing down the Gram Parsons and turning up Graham Parker. 'Lean Into The Breeze' is still rooted in rustic tones, but the songwriting comes from a more modern take on British pub rock, jangly guitar pop and hard throttled boogie jams. Influenced by such bygone bands as Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Grease Band, The Byrds and Big Star, Sweet Chariot also found themselves inspired by Teenage Fanclub, GospelbeacH, Shannon And The Clams, Endless Boogie, and Chris Robinson, who along with Isaiah Mitchell, jumped up on stage with the band in 2018. Sweet Chariot has also shared stages with NRBQ, Mother Hips, The Flamin' Groovies, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Jesse Dayton, Beachwood Sparks, Allah-Las and the late, great Pegi Young. Sweet Chariot comprises singer/guitarist Eric Shea (Hot Lunch, Mover) and Planes Of Satori drummer Chris Labreche - both from the bygone band Parchman Farm. They also landed bass player Doran Shelley, a former member of The Cramps and Nik Turner's Hawkwind. The show started with an ultra-spacey version of Pink Floyd's 'Astronomy Domine' and went straight to the high energy garagerock song 'Vivid Vision'. Then they dived into a superlong 'Ballspeaker' and after this epic track they played the psychedelic 'Black And White'. By welcoming the beauty of imperfection and simplicity, Sven Wunder applies the timeless wisdom of 'Wabi Sabi' on this musical journey. A journey between now and then by interpreting the idiom of folkloric and western art instruments. The sound of the bamboo-flute ("shakuchachi"), and the guzheng, also known as the Chinese zither, joins traditional Japanese folk melodies with modern pop percussion and 20th century electronic instruments such as the Moog synthesizer, Wurlitzer electric piano and electric bass. It has a mix of jazz (both funky and progressive), East Asian and South Asian sounds.

The Combine were formed in late 1984 by Chris Philpott and John Wratten following the split of Small World. The band went on to have a short but glorious life which lasted about 18 months.
The band recorded a handful of songs but unfortunately many of the songs that were written and performed live during this period were never recorded. The band eventually disbanded in mid-1986. Their few recordings come on this limited 7" picture disc.

The Centaurs were one of the top rock bands to come out of Vancouver Canada in the mid 1960s. With their long hair and bad boy image, they were way ahead of their time in both their sound and style. They left Vancouver seeking fame and fortune and ended up in Holland and Germany where they quickly rose to the top of their game, sharing the stage with some of the biggest groups of the day and gaining thousands of adoring fans. The tracks represented here are high quality studio recordings from 1966 transferred from the original analog master tapes, plus a few live bonus tracks recorded in 1967 in Amsterdam, Holland, just to give the listener a feel of the period from the band's own perspective. In 1991 for half a year every Wednesday Andy Warhoofd went to Bob's apartment to record and drink beer (Grolsch beugels) while Bob used all kindsa chemical substances to broaden his mind and vision and to make the recordings even more outstanding than they would have become just drinking flat water. They both played all instruments and Andy did all the vocals. All in all 16 songs were recorded. As the guys were friends with the Sufgerukte Wallies and Belgian comedian Herr Seele they were asked to do some gigs. De Kikker in Utrecht, the Democrazy in Gent, Para in Breda and the Noorderlicht in Tilburg were the venues that saw these now classical performances. Sadly much too fast the two personalities arrived at a point there was only a turning back and they both went their way. Bob sadly took Vitamin B instead of XTC in 1999 and died. Around the same period Andy Warhoofd disappeared while walking through the Mastwood in a parallel universum, never to be seen again. Luckily their recordings survive and Grey Past Records are proud to hereby announce the official first ever and last ever release of the debut album of the Comcommers. Only 250 numbered copies as it is music for the happy few that want to cross all borders of good taste end real rudimentary musicianship! Music ranges from straight Floydian Barret psych ('Mijn Leven Is Niet Van Jou') to strange postpunk ('Ontevreden') to all kindsa odd tunes going as far out as you can get with Dutch languaged rock. If you loved the 'Biet-Het' series you sure should try this. When you listen think of what might have become of this great band if ever...

The LP comes in a gatefold sleeve with insert and gimmick sticker. The music was produced by Joseph James Foster and Stephen Parfitt in Rugby, UK. The sleeve art is by Berend Vonk. In the liners you can read about the disastrous trip to the UK, the band destruction sleeping in a 24 hour party people house, the destruction of the master tape in the mastering facility, the disappearance of the bass-player, the CD which was mastered from a cheap copy cassette and which sounded like totall shit... breathtaking. All sounds are re-edited at Studio 195 with Patrick Delabie. Now these cleared sounds show a band escaping the UK and US influences and creating a sound of their own. Indie, underground and very Dutch. In 1993 it must have been the unhippest record of the year as it stood outside everything happening those days. But now it just might fall in the right place and time. Very danceable tunes mixed with weird rhythms. Punky, garagey, folkey, psychedelic. Songs about seals and Armageddon. A classic. 300 copies.

Taking their '60s influenced garage rock music a step further, 'The Time Traveller's...' finds deeper darker depths. Influences are worn on the front of t-shirts, quite openly yes, but you can actually believe these guys know what they're wearing! This album builds on the raw sound of its predecessors with a further blast of psych'n'roll. Tremelo and wah wah pedals get abused to squalling effect, Keith Moon-esque drums clatter and the Hammond wails. It's ALIVE! And THRILLING!
The songs are stuffed with pop melodies and the sound has its tentacles over all manner of '60s bands - the cover of Bohemian Vendetta's 'Enough' gives a clue as to where the band's collective head is. The album is beautifully produced in a way it sounds like it wasn't produced at all. Totally raw and occasionally rough-edged, exactly how music was recorded, before technology smoothed everything out to near blandness.
Guitars twang, chime, fuzz and wah-wah into a frenzy of excitement, vocals stretch beyond their abilities and occasionally scream and break, while the drums biff bang and pow (er) their way through, while somehow holding everything together. Organs swirl, and a variety of 'strange sounds' all of which were created by experimentation, rather than using modern day 'plug ins' or 'pressing buttons', will have you wondering, what is that?...

And ever since then they have remained the super formation of Disco In The Disco, inexhaustibly creating sublime danceable electro punk-rock. Their lack of virtuosity is abundantly compensated by their good looks and slick dance moves. The Faces, live from the Strawberry Mountain Fair, Vancouver, Canada, May 17th 1970. Strawberry Mountain Fair was held outside Mission, Vancouver on the weekend of May 16th-17th 1970. The site was idyllic, surrounded by meadows, trees, streams and a waterfall, but the event was marked by bad weather and tensions with locals and police. Inaccurately billed as the Small Faces, the Faces played a superb set on the Sunday, shot through with their usual infectious swagger. The full performance, broadcast live by CBC-FM, is presented here with background notes and images. Comes on yellow vinyl.

'This Quiet Room' is the final, definitive statement from New Zealand post-punk/new wave/dark indie band Vietnam, who formed at highschool in Wainuiomata some forty years ago. Initially active from 1981-85, and reforming in 2017 to celebrate the reissue of their self-titled 1985 debut, Vietnam went on to record 'This Quiet Room' between 2019 and 2020. Co-founding member, bassist, and songwriter Adrian Workman says of the new album: "Renewed interest in our music stimulated by the re-release of the 1985 EP, coupled with some unfinished business, injected the band with the motivation to record previously unreleased material along with a batch of new songs written in the pre-production phase of the album." The finished album follows a timeline of the band's repertoire, opening with four songs that featured in their live set in the 1980s, before launching into new material. The transition is seamless, and the songs are unmistakably Vietnam: the sound and sentiments of the original line-up ringing throughout, enhanced by the addition of guest musicians. The hugely sought-after debut album from Dead Voices On Air (Mark Spybey of Download/ ex-Zoviet France, Reformed Faction), featuring cEvin Key (Skinny Puppy/Download). 'Abrader' blends processed sounds from primitive instruments and found objects into hypnotic looped rhythmic structures, with dark clusters of heavy ambient washes into what could be described as Organic Panambience, or 'music for the eyes'. 'Abrader' was the first of over 80 releases (so far) by Mark Spybey using the name Dead Voices On Air. It was recorded over the space of days in Vancouver in 1993 and released as a tape the following year by Akifumi Nakajima (Aube), for his G.R.O.S.S. label. Chronologically, the material was recorded after most of the music that made up his first two releases on compact disc - 'New Words Machine' and 'Hafted Maul' - however, 'Abrader' was released before both of those albums. 'Abrader Redux' features the three lengthy tracks that were released on the original cassette, plus the bonus tracks that were included in the 2009 reprint as part of the 'Fast Falls The Eventide' double CD, and now with two 'new' previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded 1994 - taking this masterwork up to 7 tracks and over 67 minutes of exceptional music. Released in 1977 on Soul Jazz Pop, a subsidiary label of Mavuthela Music Company/Gallo, Teaspoon & The Waves' self-titled album is an absolute masterpiece. Best known for the song 'Oh Yeh Soweto', which is an astonishing adaptation of Lamont Dozier's anthem 'Going Back To My Roots', this track has become a contemporary underground club classic in recent times and has been featured in sets from a cross-section of DJs. With such a massive calling card song, it could be easy to write off the album as a typical one-tracker (like so many records often are), but that is a long way from the truth. 'Saturday Express' is a jazz-funk/disco stomper which will soon be lighting up dancefloors again. 'Wind And Fire' is true Afro-jazz-funk excellence, with great spacey synths and reggae-inspired guitar grooves riding throughout. The opener, 'Friday Night', also has a slightly reggae-tinged tropical groove, whilst 'Got Me Tight' finishes off the session with a feel-good jazz-funk workout that features cool, quirky, Patrick Adams-esque synths.

Andaleeb Wasif was born in a well-known family of Hyderabad, India in 1928. A self-taught singer and harmonium player. He gained recognition early in life, performing for the Nizam (ruler) of Hyderabad when he was only six years old. On this recording Wasif performs six ghazals, a poetic form of couplets focussing on love and longing with mystical and spiritual elements. The lyrics to the ghazals featured on the recording are written by some of the best known Urdu poets of the 20th century including Faiz Ahmad Faiz. Never commercially released, the songs have been sourced from private concerts, home recorded cassettes and radio shows. Andaleeb's renditions are enigmatic, filled with pathos, timeless and ethereal.
