Both albums gained high praise in places such as Goldmine Magazine, Prog Magazine, Sea of Tranquility and The Progressive Aspect. As a solo performer, Jim has also released two experimental folk-tinged albums via psychedelic folk drone label Reverb Worship (UK) and has been featured on the Krautrock specialist label Fruits de Mer (UK). 'The Signal' marks Jim's first appearance on the Sound Effect Record label (Greece). The album is a space rock concept album, recounting the tale of an Edwardian astronomer in 1902 and his astounding discovery of an alien signal from distant Sirius. The album recounts the effect of this strange event on his life and tells a cosmic story of "what might have been" across seven varied and progressive tracks. The album features a range of guest musicians and electronic artists from across Ireland, the UK and the US. Most notably including original Blue Öyster Cult founding member Joe Bouchard.

'Oddities, Abnormalities And Curiosities' is an absolutely fresh and honest album and is often overlooked. There's still the old playfulness and anarchic aggressiveness ('Brick,' 'Career Day'), paired with an ironic wink, and the rough edges that will probably protect them from commercial frenzy this time too. If Keith then goes back to work frustrated, it's not at least your fault, tight-fisted ignorants. Full of blazing guitars, thundering drums and ear-piercing screams, and while it isn't entirely slam dance worthy like their earlier albums, any real fan should appreciate this as a true punk rock piece of art. Circle Jerks fans, who remembered the band for their short street anthems and sarcastic political songs of the early '80s seem to forget that in 1995 when this record was recorded, Reagan wasn't in the white house. Sure, things weren't perfect politically, but the Circle Jerks weren't known for their political dissent. They sang about everything. They were the party band, and on 'Oddities' it shows.

Here is a hidden gem from the 1990s, a sparkling cyber-ambient-Mandarin pop collection produced by Henry Kawahara, the master of cyber-occult music, with silky vocals from Shanghai-born vocalist Xiao Yun Wu. Originally released on CD in 1994 on Kawahara's own HMD label, the Xiao Yun project was launched by Kawahara and his trusted colleague Keisuke Oki, who plays keyboards on the album. Kawahara handled the production, along with guitar, keyboards and programming. And of course, the crowning glory is the voice of Xiao Yun: lovely, floating, ethereal. The singer arranged the songs, which range from versions of previously released Kawahara solo pieces to Mandarin pop classics. All songs are given Kawahara's cyber-occult sheen, which may evoke visions of the cosmopolitan Asia of near-future science fiction, this album will transport you, via 1994, to a sparkling future.

'BEST CUTS 1995-2000' - This 2LP set from EM Records chronicles the legacy of underground Japanese techno legends Cycheouts - pronounced 'psyche outs' in English. Originally formed in 1994, the group quickly became a centerpiece of Osaka's underground electronic scene. Led by main producer Akira Ohashi, Cycheouts melded influences from jungle, drum'n'bass, digital hardcore, and experimental noise music, all of which are explored in this compilation of tracks painstakingly selected by two true Cycheouts experts. Cycheouts' music and live performances went on to inspire a number of successful Japanese dance music acts, and can be seen as an origin point for the "nerdcore techno" movement of the early 2000s. This archive of the early work of Cycheouts provides an essential look at the birth and development of hardcore jungle in Japan, including multiple tracks featuring the full Cycheouts lineup with original vocals and multiple MCs. Most of these tracks are available on LP for the first time, and have been newly remastered for the format; the set also includes extensive liner notes in both English and Japanese.

HUH are the wild, freeform duo of Kyosuke Terada and Takuma Mori. Based in Tokyo, and playing together since 2007, HUH have released a clutch of cassettes, CD-Rs, and digital albums; they've toured Europe (in 2017) and Australia (2019); and they count amongst their collaborators the likes of T Mikawa of Incapacitants, ASTRO, and Government Alpha. You may know Terada from his duo with Shizuo Uchida, MAI MAO, who recently released an LP on An'archives, but he's super prolific, performing solo and in groups like The Obey Unit, Bay City Rolaz, Praymate, Terror Shit, Death After Death, and more. Takuma Mori also records solo and is one half of duos Cosmetic i and Don't Let Me Fantastic. So, they're busy, energetic musicians - but even that doesn't quite explain the bustling energy and furious
dislocation of the music they make together as HUH. It's incredible, brain-blatting stuff, moving at a fierce clip
between ideas, instruments, and styles - on a track like 'Jewels In Blue Pee,' for example, a plunking banjo riff is
repeatedly effaced by stumble-drunk drums, rumbling bass, and incongruous, high-wire blasts of electronics. There are voices in here, but they're often mangled and distorted; rarely comprehensible, they melt into the unpredictable structures Terada and Mori build out of their junk kit. HUH call themselves 'free-form freak-out/noise improvisation,' and there's a touch of the Familiar Ugly in the collective stammer and stutter central to their music. They're remarkably untroubled by anyone's expectations, resulting in a music that's as confusing as it is compelling, full of clamour and vigour, but never for the sake of it: these seven improvisations, sometimes song-like, sometimes careening and hyperactive, sometimes smeared and abstract, all make their own kind of perfect un-sense. Line them up next to similarly puzzling yet enthralling gutterpunk improv units: Smegma, Bone
Cure, Nihilist Spasm Band, Crayon Skidder.

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, presents the world premiere release of the catchy score by Guido & Maurizio de Angelis ('Savana Violenta,' 'Torso,' 'Il Grande Racket,' 'Killerfish') for Lando Buzzanca's sex-comedy vehicle 'San Pasquale Baylonne Protettore Delle Donne' (1976). The film, directed by Luigi Filippo d'Amico, follows petty criminal Giuseppe Cicerchia (Buzzanca) who can't catch a break following separation from his wife, Iolanda. That is, until he moves to the isolated mountain town of Busolone, where the crafty con man finds the recipe for success... The score by the De Angelis brothers is almost a musical sequel to their score for 'Per La Grazia Ricevuta' (1971), a film with which 'San Pasquale Bayllone' has much in common. A folk/pop hybrid approach characterizes the whole score, mixed with the brothers' indisputable gift for melody and lovely, heart-warming tunes. A religiously inspired, folksy waltz serves as the main theme.

Manuel De Sica wrote an orchestral comment based on a recurring symphonic tarantella, which is the main theme retaken in symphonic version or with a solo guitar, alternated with lounge tracks like 'Rough,' sung by De Sica himself, who was 23 years old back then, with the fabulous 'Bossa Nova Boss,' with the extravagant 'Casa Da Gioco' and with the 'Anna E Tonino' love theme. RCA printed a promo LP, put together by Manuel De Sica, 30:30 minutes long. In 1994 the same material was printed on CD, paired with 'The Garden Of The Finzi-Continis' (aka 'Il Giardino Dei Finzi-Contini'). Digit Moves was able to have access to the original session mono masters, which brought them to discover some unpublished material, that results in a 46:38 minutes long CD. A sincere homage to the musical art of the dearly departed Manuel De Sica.

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, presents the CD premiere of the delicious Detto Mariano ('La Principessa Nuda,' Il Bisbetico Domato,' Il Ragazzo Di Campagna') comedy score for the Maurizio Nichetti's classic 'Ratataplan' (1979).
The film was written and directed by Maurizio Nichetti, whose specialization was pantomime acting and who also stars in the film. The wordless movie stars Nichetti as Colombo, an engineer who is known for coming up with unusual solutions to problems. In a number of colorful vignettes, we see him invent brilliant contraptions such as a breakfast machine, the secret of eternal life and even a dancing robot. The score composed by Detto Mariano is as colorful as Colombo's inventions. The main theme is a vocal duet, reflecting on the film's optimistic message that even an oddball like our hero can find a mate. Colorful source cues for the flats around Colombo's loft are augmented with great music for the film's memorable set pieces, including a theatrical performance where a cardboard piano comes to life and a couple of infectious disco songs to which the dancing robot can jam.

Dorothy Ashby was the very best and most swinging performer on the multi-stringed instrument associated with the gates of heaven. Here on Earth, Ashby adeptly plucked and strummed the harp like nobody else, as evidenced on a single reissue containing her two best LPs for the Prestige and Prestige/New Jazz labels from 1958 -- 'Hip Harp' and 'In A Minor Groove.' Alongside her prior efforts for the Savoy label, they collectively represent a small but substantive discography for the Detroit native in small group settings. With the exceptional flute sounds produced by Frank Wess, the combo plays music that is oriented via a unique sonic palate, further enhanced by the principals in the standards and originals they have chosen. Fellow Detroiter Herman Wright is here on bass, with duties split between legendary drummers Art Taylor and Roy Haynes, who place particular emphasis on subtle brushwork. Of course, the watchword of Ashby's sound is elegance, as she and Wess weave magical threads of gold and silver through standards like the circular and pristine 'Moonlight In Vermont,' the dramatic, slow 'Yesterdays,' or the sad 'Alone Together.' In a more Baroque or chamber setting, 'Charmain' and 'It's A Minor Thing' have Wess and Ashby thinking on a regal or Grecian platform. The variety on this collection is impressive, as you hear cinematic bluesy proclamations on 'Autumn In Rome,' striking mystery in 'Taboo,' mischievous and sly winks during 'Rascallity,' and a sexy calypso-to-swing beat as 'You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To' unfolds. After a spell with organist Jack McDuff, he went solo in the early 1960s, cutting volumes of jazz and soul before belatedly scoring hits as a lead vocalist. Recorded in November 1969 at the US Embassy, 'Live In Ankara' saw the adventurous jazz trumpeter Don Cherry performing with saxophonist Irfan Sümer, bassist Selçuk Sun, and drummer Okay Temiz, with arrangements by trumpeter Maffy Falay, who had introduced Cherry to Temiz in Stockholm. Mostly comprised of Cherry originals and adaptations of Turkish folk songs, there are one-off takes of compositions by Ornette Coleman and Pharoah Sanders as well, the sparse musical ensemble giving Cherry ample room for soloing as they drift between the sounds of tradition and experimentation. 'Looking Ahead' is the debut album by American jazz musician Ken McIntyre, recorded with fellow alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy in 1960 and released on the New Jazz label in January 1961. From the beginning Mr. McIntyre considered himself part of the avant-garde or 'new thing' movement in jazz, as spearheaded by musicians like Ornette Coleman, Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor, although his own music was considerably more traditionally melodic than theirs. He played a whole fleet of reed instruments, including oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet and saxophones. In 1964, on the album 'Way, Way Out,' he recorded bouncing, urgent jazz tunes with chilly, dissonant string arrangements; in 1966, he accompanied Mr. Taylor on the album 'Unit Structures,' a landmark recording of the jazz avant-garde.

'Karma' is Sanders' third recording as a leader, and is among a number of spiritually themed albums the Impulse! record label released in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Although it is followed by the brief 'Colors,' the album's main piece is the 32-minute-long 'The Creator Has A Master Plan,' co-composed by Sanders with vocalist Leon Thomas. Some see this piece as a kind of sequel to Sanders' mentor John Coltrane's legendary 1964 recording 'A Love Supreme' (whose opening it echoes in a muscular yet lyrical opening "prelude", with Sanders playing over a suspended, non-rhythmic backdrop, before the entrance of a bass figure which underpins much of the piece). It features Sanders on tenor sax, along with two of his most important collaborators, the aforementioned Leon Thomas and pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, as well as a supporting cast of musicians who were major musicians in their own right: flautist James Spaulding; French-horn player Julius Watkins; bassist Reggie Workman, who had played with Coltrane earlier in the 1960s; second bassist Richard Davis; drummer Billy Hart, and percussionist Nathaniel Bettis. While later recorded versions of the tune, some of which featured Sanders and Thomas, became shorter and more lyrical, this original contains extended free instrumental sections, particularly the third section, where the saxophonist demonstrates some of the techniques which build his distinctive sound, including a split-reed technique, overblowing, and multiphonics, which give a screeching sound.

Pharoah Sanders recorded the songs that comprise 'Thembi' in the winter of '70/'71, in between sessions with Alice Coltrane that would eventually become her masterpiece 'Journey In Satchidananda' LP. The same compelling spirituality that embued Coltrane's masterpiece with a mood of stately calm and grace pervades 'Thembi.' 'On 'Thembi,' that was the first time that I ever touched a Fender Rhodes electric piano. We got to the studio in California - Cecil McBee had to unpack his bass, the drummer had to set up his drums, Pharoah had to unpack all of his horns. Everybody had something to do, but the piano was just sitting there waiting. I saw this instrument sitting in the corner and I asked the engineer, 'What is that?' He said, 'That's a Fender Rhodes electric piano.' I didn't have anything to do, so I started messing with it, checking some of the buttons to see what I could do with different sounds. All of a sudden I started writing a song and everybody ran over and said, 'What is that?' And I said, 'I don't know, I'm just messing around.' Pharoah said, 'Man, we gotta record that. Whatcha gonna call it?' I'd been studying astral projections and it sounded like we were floating through space so I said let's call it 'Astral Traveling.' That's how I got introduced to the electric piano.'

Limited repress, be fast! 1977's 'Transcendence' was not only Alice Coltrane's last studio album for Warner Bros., it would also be her last studio work for nearly three decades. While 'Eternity' and 'Radha-Krsna Nama Sankirtana' followed the composer's muse through an exciting range of musical styles and influences, 'Transcendence' is perhaps the most fully realized of the three LPs, synthesizing the best elements of each into a monumental whole. Side one consists of intimate compositions with Alice's pointillist harp enhanced by intricate string arrangements. At times, the emotional climaxes in 'Radhe Shyam' and the title track sound like the score to an epic film. This would be the closest Coltrane ever came to chamber music, yet rendered with her uniquely spiritual tint. Side two moves into celestial territory with uplifting chants, light handclaps and bluesy organ. These call-and-response chants, featuring members from her Ashram, completely embody both African-American gospel and Hindu devotional traditions, an uncanny fusion that is transformed through Alice's pure spirit. What runs through the album's two musical halves is a powerful sense of devotion and discovery. At this point in her life, Coltrane was on a journey toward truth through sound, and 'Transcendence' gives the listener a front row seat to this quest.

By the late '70s, Alice Coltrane had largely gravitated away from jazz, incorporating Hindu chants and hymns into her music to reflect a newfound sense of creative omnipotence. However, in April 1978, she would return to her roots, performing at University of California, Los Angeles to make her first and only live album. 'Transfiguration', featuring drummer Roy Haynes and bassist Reggie Workman, showcases Alice's many compositional talents and fierce improvisatory abilities. Throughout this double LP set, her playing evokes the time spent in her late husband John Coltrane's band and the avant-garde music of her earlier years. As biographer Franya J. Berkman writes, "Her up-tempo keyboard work here is the most exciting of her commercial career. With its rapid-fire transpositions of short figures; its long modal passages, rhythmic play, and timbral inventiveness; its sustained energy and burning pace; and the unrelenting support of Haynes and Workman, she takes leave of the jazz business with a truly breathtaking swan song." Alice Coltrane would not revisit jazz on record for another 26 years, turning instead to spiritual music made with students at her Vedantic Center and self-releasing a series of cassettes under her Sanskrit name, Turiyasangitananda. It is hard to imagine a better farewell than the intense and spellbinding 'Transfiguration.'

When in 1974 the Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia discovered a book called 'Universo Em Desencanto' no-one around him would have predicted what would happen next. At that time Maia was one of Brazil's biggest pop stars, and undoubtedly its biggest soul singer. Singles like 'Chocolate' and 'Nao Quero Dinheiro
(Só Quero Amar)' had propelled him to the top of the charts. With his group, who happened to be some of the funkiest musicians around, he'd just sealed a deal to make a double album for RCA Victor in Brazil, a sure sign of his lofty ambitions and the regard he was held in the music industry. Then that book came along. 'Universo Em Desencanto' is a book of spiritual awakening written by charismatic leader Manoel Jacintho Coelho. It's a quasi-religious text that uses pseudo-science and much bluster to seek to awaken its reader to another level of consciousness, telling them what they need to do to reach enlightenment, or to become rationally immunized,
to use their parlance. The book that Maia picked up was just the first volume (in total Coelho wrote 1,000 volumes) but it was enough to get him hooked. It seems that at that point in his life what Maia needed was spiritual enlightenment and
Rational Culture, which was the cult that formed around Coelho and his teachings, was going to provide that. Maia promptly binned the vocals he'd written for his double album for RCA, and began writing new lyrics influenced by his new vocation. He also gave away many of his possessions, began dressing in white and, for an 18-month spell, ended up directing much of his money towards the cult. On a positive note, he also gave up drugs and reigned in his monstrous appetite, meaning he at least got himself in shape. Some, but not all, of his band members joined him for the trip. With much mythology around this period in Maia's life, we never get to find out exactly
what drove Maia to become so obsessed with Rational Culture - he himself rarely spoke about the Rational years after leaving acrimoniously in 1975 -, the glimpses into Maia's psyche, the various troubles he'd faced in his life and the fact his father died when he was 16/17 offer up some possible reasons. 'Racional Vol. 1' is another great title in what is proving to be an indispensable series for any Brazilian music fans out there..

Hard-rocking Brooklyn trio Sir Lord Baltimore's highly sought-after debut album is a legendary precursor of the heavy metal genre, a 1971 Creem review of the disc perhaps the first to ever use the term. The group benefited from the songwriting and production team of Mike Appel and Jim Cretecos, Appel, the future manager of Bruce Springsteen and Cretecos already heady
from success with The Partridge Family; recorded at Vantone Studios in New Jersey, it was mixed to fine effect by Eddie Kramer at Electric Ladyland, fresh from his work with Jimi Hendrix. Guitarist Louis Dambra co-arranged the material with Appel and Cretecos; he had earlier played in garage band The Koala as Louis Caine, and here his screeching guitar is a major draw, backed by plodding bass from Gary Justin, as front man John Garner shrieks his vocals while pounding furious drumbeats. Aside from a tough cover of Ray Charles' 'I Got A Woman' and a track inspired by Yeats' poem 'Lake Isle Of Innersfree,' the album features heavily-stoned acid rock originals, delivered the Sir Lord Baltimore way.
