A great mix of pastoral prog, hard-rock, blues and West Coast/Americana: long tracks, soft vocal harmonies, dual guitar... Hokus Poke formed in London in the late '60s, consisting of Clive Blenkhorn of lead guitar and vocals, Roger Clarke on guitar, Smith Campbell on bass and Jonnie Miles on drums. Managed by Kenny Lynch, they secured a deal with the legendary Vertigo label. 'Earth Harmony,' their sole album, was recorded at George Martin's AIR Studios. Released in 1971, it was housed in a fabulous die-cut sleeve with photos taken by John Kelly, famous for his work on the Beatles 'White Album.' David's mid-'80s to mid-'90s band The Junk Monkeys was the best straight forward rock and roll band of that time period that you might have missed. No metal overtones, no industrial edge, no rap hybrids. Just straight up rock and roll ala The Rolling Stones, The Replacements and Cheap Trick with that gritty working class Detroit city attitude added in. The band toured relentlessly but David decided to leave the music business on a high note not too long after touring for the 'Bliss' record. He left with the band's integrity intact before there was even a whiff of succumbing to the pressures of the commercial machine. 'MusicHound's Rock: The Essential Album Guide' called 1992's 'Bliss,' "One of the best guitar-pop releases in a decade rife with great ones." At the turn of the century David assisted a fellow Junk Monkey alum in the studio project SWIG, but other than that he has laid dormant (musically speaking) until he got the itch again in 2014. He rounded up a supergroup for his new band, David Bierman Overdrive. A bunch of seasoned veteran Detroit friends: Kevin Perri (Junk Monkeys, Dives, Brian McCarty Band, etc), Dave Feeny (Hysteric Narcotics, Orange Roughies, Blanche, American Mars, Loretta Lynn, etc), Stephen Palmer (Fletcher Pratt, Back in Spades, The High Strung, etc) and Jim Faulkner (The Happy Accidents, Blueflowers, The Beggars, etc). He has maintained the same great lineup since the band's inception. David Bierman Overdrive is a band effort and not just a bunch of session guys. David brings the songs and the guys put their touches on them to round them out. |

Dany Laj is a bit of a nomad. On his last full length record, 2021's 'Ten Easy Pieces,' he had the line "6 towns in 6 years, I kinda like this one". And yet, still he moves away shortly after that record comes out. While he does move place to place quite a bit, he always settles somewhere in his native Canada (Montreal currently). Sonically he has similar tendencies, not staying in a particular lane but still keeping on the wide road of his overall melodic power pop sound. He'll swerve into some classic rock, punk, R&B and folk but still stay on course. On his latest single from I-94 Recordings he incorporates some '60s girl group and doo wop sounds while still remaining true to the Dany Laj & The Looks backbone. When you hear it, 'You Should Know' it's Dany Laj. Catchiness is his forte. The melodies hook you in. Dany has found his partner in musical crime, with Jeanette Dowling plucking the bass and singing along sweetly with him. This time around the core (Dany & Jeanette) are augmented by additional Looks Anna Mernieks-Duffield on guitar and vocals and Mike Mernieks-Duffield on drums. The two couple dynamic is an interesting one. (Abba or Fleetwood Mac, anyone?). They meld together quite nicely. This is the #7 single in I-94 Recordings Detroit cover "B" side series. Dany decided to stretch the parameters a bit on the "Detroit" cover. He chose to do 'I'm So Glad,' originally released by Skip James (who is not from Detroit) in 1931. How we get the Detroit connection is The Scot Richard Case (later shortened to SRC) had a regional hit with it in their hometown of Detroit in 1967. The Looks version is more akin to this one. |

The third album from Australian post-industrial outfit Kollaps. 'Until The Day I Die' is a merciless and visceral assault on the senses and continues the trajectory of the band's idiosyncratic approach in their creation of sound. The album showcases an uncompromising force of harsh post-industrial music narrated by overarching themes of condemnation and redemption; of violence, romanticism, sexuality, and addiction. Much of the creation and lyrical conceptualisation of the record has been stylised and presented using William S. Burroughs' cut-up method. A wide variety of metals and raw materials were used in the creation of the album including metal grates, a rusted hoist, cement cylinders, field recordings, hammering of various decrepit objects, broken amplifiers, an exposed reverb tank, various synthesizers, and the infamous metal coil; a crudely self-constructed artifice that has become iconic in its use across Kollaps' triptych of releases and lengthy touring history in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. 'Until The Day I Die' has had a tectonic shift in production methods compared to its predecessors and was entirely written, recorded, and mixed internally the self-constructed ILoveHeroin Studios built above a sculpture museum in Lugano, Switzerland. All instrumentation was handled by Wade Black except for bass guitar by Andrea Collaro recorded at Hangar 121 in Lenate Pozzollo, Italy on all tracks except 'D-IX' and 'I Believe In The Closed Fist,' handled by Black, and additional sound design and percussion by Giorgio Salmoiraghi. The hugely sought-after debut album from Dead Voices On Air (Mark Spybey of Download/ ex-Zoviet France, Reformed Faction), featuring cEvin Key (Skinny Puppy/Download). 'Abrader' blends processed sounds from primitive instruments and found objects into hypnotic looped rhythmic structures, with dark clusters of heavy ambient washes into what could be described as Organic Panambience, or 'music for the eyes'. 'Abrader' was the first of over 80 releases (so far) by Mark Spybey using the name Dead Voices On Air. It was recorded over the space of days in Vancouver in 1993 and released as a tape the following year by Akifumi Nakajima (Aube), for his G.R.O.S.S. label. Chronologically, the material was recorded after most of the music that made up his first two releases on compact disc - 'New Words Machine' and 'Hafted Maul' - however, 'Abrader' was released before both of those albums. Recorded at George Martin's AIR Studios and originally released on the collectable Vertigo label. A great mix of pastoral prog, hard-rock, blues and West Coast/Americana: long tracks, soft vocal harmonies, dual guitar... Hokus Poke formed in London in the late '60s, consisting of Clive Blenkhorn of lead guitar and vocals, Roger Clarke on guitar, Smith Campbell on bass and Jonnie Miles on drums. Managed by Kenny Lynch, they secured a deal with the legendary Vertigo label. 'Earth Harmony,' their sole album, was recorded at George Martin's AIR Studios. Released in 1971, it was housed in a fabulous die-cut sleeve with photos taken by John Kelly, famous for his work on the Beatles 'White Album.' This is one of the rarest albums on the collectable Vertigo label. Comes with original artwork in gatefold die-cut sleeve and an insert with liner notes by Richard Allen and rare photos.
