CHILLUM - CHILLUM
Fully licensed, limited to 500 copies. The sole self-titled album by English progsters Chillum was in fact an offshoot project of famous psychedelic icon Second Hand. They shared three members - George Hart, Ken Elliott, Kieran O'Connor - with the former band, giving birth to a more experimental act. The record originally saw the light of day in 1971. The LP was supposed to be the third Second Hand album, but apparently the members decided to change the band's name. Their heavy swinging approach was in the end similar to such contemporary luminaries like Atomic Rooster, Leaf Hound, and Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come. A jam album with lots of roaring percussion and an impressive organ to make big sound. Ken Elliott (keyboards, Mellotron, organ, vocals), Kieran O'Connor (drums), Tony McGill (guitar) and George Hart (bass). |

Orphan Egg were a short lived group who were formed in 1967 in San Jose California. Their sole self-titled album was released in 1968 on the small independent company Carole Records. Essentially a garage-psych album - in the tradition of future iconic compilations like 'Nuggets' or 'Pebbles' - Orphan Egg was recorded by a bunch of students at Saratoga High School in Saratoga. Occasionally they won the Vox Battle of the Bands, a nationwide competition. They also appeared on the soundtrack of the classic bike-movie 'Cycle Savages' with 3 tracks. |

Magnificent Wolof drum music, performed by an extended griot family over seven consecutive days, in the mystical setting of Lac Rose, outside Dakar. Doudou Ndiaye Rose -who died in 2015- is a key drummer in the musical history of the world. He developed a system of five hundred original drumming patterns, ancient and new. Amongst the modern rhythms here is 'Bench Mi' - 'under the Baobab tree,' a spot where where problems get solved. Also 'Hibar Yi' - 'passing on information' - the theme-tune of Senegalese TV national news for decades - and 'Les Rosettes,' the signature rhythm of Senegal's first ever all-female percussion group, convened by Doudou, and named after his grandmother. These original compositions sit alongside important traditional rhythms, familiar to every Sabar player, such as 'Farwu Jar' (a courtship game sometimes resulting in a wedding), 'Ceebu Jin' (also the name of the national dish of fish and rice), and 'Gumbè,' often played after a successful harvest. Recorded in joyful single takes, with no overdubs, mastered by Rashad Becker, the music is deep and thrilling, polyrhythmic to the bone, with a complex, pointillistic intensity at times evoking Jeff Mills in full flight. MUSLIMGAUZE - TURN ON ARABIC AMERICAN RADIO (2LP)
The relationship between Bryn Jones' music as Muslimgauze and the track/album titles he would provide (sometimes right on the tapes he would send in for release, but often determined later, sometimes even giving two different pieces months apart the same title, accidentally or not) has always been a little mysterious. Jones himself can no longer be asked, and as we continue to investigate the swathes of material he provided, you hit sources like the DAT or DATs that make up the contents of this double LP 'Turn On Arab American Radio.' Nine tracks, the first LP/four tracks titled 'Turn On Arab American Radio,' and the other LP/five tracks labelled only 'Arab American Radio.' None of them sound particularly radio-esque, although given the simultaneous vastness and ornate focus of Jones' Muslimgauze work that gap between name and sound is far from atypical. Instead here the de rigeur percussion loops that underpin this particular set of tracks, while occasionally clipping into the fierce distortion that Jones either loved to use or couldn't get away from, steer away from both the more consistent application of that distortion as well as the Middle Eastern and Asian influences he often used. It'd be a stretch to call anything here basic boom-bap production but they come closer to it than a lot of Muslimgauze production. And while those loops are, as always prominent, they're not actually the focus; settling into steady vamps as structures for Jones to pursue an extended and often more gentle exploration of the other sample sources he has here. There are stringed instruments, the sound of water, but most prominently or strikingly the human voice. Nothing is in English but tone and the occasional word ("familia", "passport") still provide guides. There are ululations, snatches of melody; but most often speech, dialogue, often tense and harried sounding. Is this what Jones was thinking of or referring to with his 'Arab American Radio'? As with so many other questions about Muslimgauze, we'll never know the answer to that one. (Most pertinently in this case we might wonder who appears here, and what the context of these recordings is. But Jones never provided that with his submissions.) Here, even though those inexorable loops pound on, indefatigable, that emphasis on some of the people Jones chooses lends a measured gentleness to much of 'Turn On Arab American Radio,' at least within the context of his body of work. The last thing you hear at the end of the second LP is one last question from one of the many speakers on this peculiar Muslimgauze radio, echoed away into infinity. We may never have answers, but those questions continue to resonate. Limited to 1000 copies. |

Having released a small body of work in the mid-'80s, Grim are a cult name among the pioneers of Japanese noise and power electronics. The one-man project returned in the 2010's, and has since then released a number of well-received albums and EP's, including six albums on Steinklang. However, if you're expecting straightforward noise/power electronics, you're in for a surprise. Mixing even danceable electronica rhythms, organ music and moments of serene ambience with uncompromisingly harsh and brutal barrages of violent noise, torturous feedback and layers of crackling distortion, 'Magnolia's Dream' is a multi-faceted, varied and odd album. Each track surprises the listener with new atmospheres, new approaches and new elements. Which is of course exactly what fans of Grim would expect. 'Magnolia's Dream' is a complex album, one that takes the listener from one extreme to the other in the blink of an eye. Where one track can lull the listener into a sense of calm with beautiful, understated melodies, the next will shake him awake with unrelenting harshness and audial violence or plunge him into deep pits of unease with haunting death industrial soundscapes. But whatever guise each track takes, one thing's clear: it's a master at work here. Comes as 6-panel digipak with 12 page booklet, limited to 200 copies. |

Regard Extrême is a name that should be familiar to anyone into neofolk, neoclassical and martial industrial. Adriano Vincenti is known from Macelleria Mobile Di Mezzanotte, Cronaca Nera, L'Amara, Pain Injection and many more. Paolo Bandera is known from Iugula-Thor, Sigillum S and more. You can't speak of industrial music without mentioning the cassette tape. The tape was an essential format in the formative years of the experimental, industrial underground, and has remained a significant factor within the post-industrial scenes ever since. Where right now the cassette tape is going through some kind of fetishized hipster-revival in other scenes, in industrial, experimental and noise music it never died. The tape was a revolutionary format for Paolo Bandera as well, who captured his first musical experiments on tape during the early '80s. He would go on to create pioneering works of extreme electronics with Sigillum S, embracing new technology as it became available. But never forgetting his love for the tape format: "the elaborate pleasure of manually working on recording cassettes and preparing exquisite packaging has never disappeared for me." This album is a tribute to that mighty format. On the initiative on Adriano Vincenti, the two have created a homage that unites a more modern medium and technology with the traditional methodology and technology of cassette tapes. In the truest traditions of the industrial underground, the album borrows, cannibalises and adapts material from others - for example Maurizio Bianchi and Metadrive - to create experimental sounds all their own. The history of the industrial underground is heavily present in the source material: the oldest recordings are from the mid-'80s. The result? An album of experimental, challenging and even adventurous industrial electronics. Dubbing this noise or power electronics or any other of the many subgenres of industrial is impossible: there is a little bit of everything on 'Ossido Di Cromo.' Ultimately, the album can be described as a throwback to an era before industrial electronics had fragmented to dozens of smaller niches; this is experimental underground electronics as its purest and finest. The newly established label Cat In The Room, created by Goodheart Productions, re-releases for the first time after almost fifty years the legendary work 'Smog' by Kyriakos Sfetsas, one of the most important Greek contemporary composers. 'Smog' is an electro-acoustic work in five parts of equal duration (18 minutes) divided into several variable sequences. It was composed as the music score for the ballet 'Smog' commissioned by the choreographer Michel Caserta. The work was premiered on October 18, 1974, by the Ensemble chorégraphique de Vitry at the Théâtre Jean-Vilar in Vitry-sur-Seine (Paris). As a musical work, it has acquired over the years the scope of a legend in the electro-acoustic-avant-garde scene, for its richness and value as a composition, the composer's ingenious use of the means available at the time regarding the production of electric sounds, and their combination with natural sounds, as well as for the four-channel recording and live performance. A new sound mastering and artwork was developed for this release in collaboration with the composer, whose liner notes are included on the cover. The title 'Smog' obviously refers to the famous London fog but, according to Mr. Caserta, it is more precisely "a fleeting and fragmented vision of things, events and characters, in bright, colored or opaque spaces. Visions truncated, mutilated, lost and found in a constant movement of shapes, rhythms and colors". If the first part of the above reflection evokes the work of the choreographer, that of the composer seems directly concerned with the second part, and we can imagine that it was a precious indicator for the composer who tells us, "imagine a music produced in a spatio-temporal context, the creation of which is possible thanks to the multiple simultaneous functions of three sectors: psyche-imagination, bodily pulsations and pictorial visions. The continual war evolving through these «multiple functions» creates the right preconditions to allow music spring from them, like an image of real life on earth, an event of a borderline expression emerging at a given moment in time and space." |

The South African tenorist Mike Makhamalele was a graduate of the key early-seventies group The Drive (alongside Bheki Mseleku and Kaya Mahlangu); and a mainstay of the scene centred on the Pelican nightclub in Soweto. From 1975, he began to record under his own name, developing a sophisticated fusion sound in a musical lane which few of his contemporaries were travelling. Always attuned to other global fashions in black dance and pop music, under numerous studio aliases he released 7" covers of Fela's 'Shakara' and the Sugar Hill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight'; and in 1979 he entered the Gallo studios with producer Peter Ceronio to respond to the ascendant sound of disco. BILUKA Y LOS CANIBALES - LEAF-PLAYING IN QUITO, 1960-1965 (2LP)
The out-of-this-world recordings of Dilson de Souza, leading a kind of tropical chamber jazz on leaves from a ficus tree. Dilson was from Barra do Pirai, in the Brazilian countryside; moving to Rio as a young man, where he worked in construction. He recorded his first record in 1954, for RCA Victor. He travelled to Quito around 1957, soon hooking up with Benitez & Valencia, who introduced him to the CAIFE label. Dilson played the leaf open, resting on his tongue, hands free, with his mouth as the resonator. Though a leaf can also be played rolled or folded in half, this method allowed for more precision, a tethered brilliance. A picked ficus leaf stays fresh, crisp and clean-toned for around ten hours. He could play eight compositions, four at each end, before it was spent. Biluka plays trills and vibratos effortlessly, with utterly pure pitch, acrobatically sliding into notes and changing tone on the fly. In Manuco, he leads Los Caníbales into a mysterious landscape on a rope pulled from an Andean spaghetti western, and corrals and teases them into a dialogue. A leaf, a harp, a xylophone, and a rondador - joined in 'Bailando Me Despido' (Dancing As I Say Goodbye) by a saucy organ, doing sloshed call-and-response. In 'Anacu De Mi Guambra,' Biluka shows his full range of antics, hiccuping melodically over a set of magic tricks. His expressiveness was boundless. The eucalyptus leaf is popular among Aboriginal Australians. In China, they've played leaves for 10,000 years. In Cambodia, people play the slek, a leaf plucked from either the sakrom or the khnoung tree. But ain't nobody like Biluka, ever. Astounding music. |
