BONGO	ASSUMPCAO, RUBINHO E MAURO - PERFEITAMENTE, JUSTAMENTE QUANDO CHEGUEI Rubinho e Mauro Assumpçao's 'Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei' has to be up there as one of the finest Brazilian-psych-folk-MPB records. Unfortunately, it's very hard to find in the wild; even on digging trips to Brazil, an original copy rarely shows up, and when it does, it comes with a hefty price tag. This highly sought-after rarity was released on the Brazilian label Tapecar Records in 1972 and is the one and only album by the sensational pairing of Rubinho and Mauro Assumpçao. Effortlessly blending folk, MPB, funky-psych, rock, and relaxed, swaggering samba, this record ought to be heralded as a true Brazilian classic. However, maybe due to its scarcity and the previous reissue predominantly being only available to the Brazilian market, it has not had a chance to fully shine and find the wider audience it deserves. Through Mr Bongo's reissue they hope to put things right. Fans of records by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges are sure to enjoy the same magic and allure in 'Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei.' In addition to being the album's songwriters, Mauro Assumpçao took on the role of producer and Rubinho was co-producer as well as playing piano, organ, acoustic guitar and performing vocals. The record features the drummer Gegê who worked with Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Nana Caymmi, Dom Um Romao and more. It also features guitarist Rick Ferreira, who played with Erasmo Carlos, Gal Costa and other greats. Rounding off the players on the album are Darcy Da Cruz and Formiga who have graced many a fine recording on horns. 0529988 LP EZRDR 141 0603111755519 RIDING EASY	WESTING - FUTURE Late in 2021, Slow Season announced they'd become Westing, and that Ben McLeod (also of Nashville's All Them Witches) was now in the four-piece on lead guitar alongside guitarist, vocalist and keyboardist Daniel Story Rice, bassist Hayden Doyel and drummer/recording engineer Cody Tarbell. Their 2023 LP (fourth overall for RidingEasy), 'Future,' is not coincidentally titled. Says Rice, "We wanted to hit the reset button on some things and so we included a new band name to that list. Fresh start, for the psychological effect of it. We first met Ben in 2014 opening for All Them Witches in San Diego, and we did that again in 2016 and he and Cody corresponded about tape machines, music production, and other similar nerd stuff. We started swapping a few ideas early in 2021 and then flew him out for four days in August 2021. We got 'Future' mostly down in that short span and did some remote stuff for overdubs, but nothing major. Obviously, our creative processes jelled pretty well to allow for such an efficiently productive session." So the story of Westing, and of 'Future,' is about change, but the music makes itself so immediately familiar, it's so welcoming, that it hardly matters. For about 10 years, the Visalia, California, outfit wandered the earth representing a new generational interpretation of classic heavy rock. The tones, warm. The melodies, sweet. We got 'Future' mostly down in that short span and did some remote stuff for overdubs, but nothing major. Obviously, our creative processes jelled pretty well to allow for such an efficiently productive session." So the story of Westing, and of 'Future,' is about change, but the music makes itself so immediately familiar, it's so welcoming, that it hardly matters. Various musicians came and went, but always around the core of guitarist Bruno Cruañes and singer Alex Amorós. The band issued their own lathe-cut 7" back in 2019 and posted various tracks to their Bandcamp page, all the while playing shows in the UK and Europe. Fast forward to 2022, the band had undergone a slight change in direction, emerging as proponents of a tougher, R & B-based British beat sound. Back in April 2022, the band entered State Records' custom-built 8-track recording facility, North Down Sound, to record an LP's worth of material (which should be out in 2023 on the Spanish Snap!! Records label). State picked 2 of their fave raves to issue as a 45, and here we are! Topside 'Novice Pretender' features Bruno taking the (double-tracked) lead vocal, and is a classic slice of spiky beat, circa '64/'65, driven by tight propulsive drums and some beautiful heavily reverbed guitar, while the flip, 'How Many Lies' sees Alex taking the lead vocal, with a more aggressive, gritty vibe... great driving bass and drums from Carlos and Brian respectively, and some fantastic distorto guitar from Bruno! 0529815 LP R 321984 CRASS	CRASS - PENIS ENVY 'Penis Envy', released in 1981, was the third LP by the anarchist punk band Crass. The album is included as #36 on Rolling Stones' "40 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time" list in 2016. Named as a reference to some of Freud's ideas concerning sexuality, this release marked something of a departure from the somewhat 'macho', 'hardcore punk' image that 'The Feeding Of The 5000' and its follow up, 'Stations Of The Crass', had to some extent given the group, for it featured more obviously complex musical arrangements, as well as exclusively female vocals by Eve Libertine and Joy De Vivre (although Steve Ignorant remained a group member and is credited on the record sleeve as "not on this recording"). The album addressed feminist issues and once again attacked the institutions of 'the system' such as marriage and sexual repression. The album was banned by the retailer HMV. During the mid-1980s, Greater Manchester Police under the direction of James Anderton seized copies along with other records by Crass and the Dead Kennedys, from Eastern Bloc record shop. Frank Schofield was charged with displaying "obscene articles for publication for gain". The band Flux Of Pink Indians, its two record labels and its publishing company were also charged under the Obscene Publications Act. This album contains the first recordings of modern music from the Sahara and mark the birth of the genre that is known in the West as 'Desert Blues' or 'Desert Rock'. Ahl Nana changed the folk music of the Sahara to modern, cosmopolitan music by using Western instruments like the electric guitar. They paved the way for artists like Ali Farka Touré, Tinariwen, Mdou Moctar or Bombino. Although the group is still active today, they only recorded 2 LPs and a handful of singles. All these recordings took place in 1971 at the Boussiphone studios in Casablanca. ROBERTSON, LESTER - AKIRFA/UNTITLED BALLAD
This 7" features two lost jazz tracks by the trombonist and Horace Tapscott-collaborator Lester Robertson. Lester has worked with some of the greats of jazz including Gerald Wilson, Anita O'Day, Lionel Hampton and Roy Porter Sound Machine on the classic 'Jessica' album. Lester was a member of Horace Tapscott's The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and features on the iconic underground jazz albums 'The Call' and 'Live At I.U.C.C..' The Arkestra was set up in 1961 in Los Angeles and over the years has included wonderful, inspirational musicians such as Adele Sebastian, Kamasi Washington, Dwight Trible, Phil Ranelin, Arthur Blythe, Jesse Sharps and Nate Morgan. These two recordings have recently been discovered on an archived master tape that little information on it other than Lester's name and the track titles. Sadly, the other players on the tracks aren't credited on the tape, so a line-up can't be 100% confirmed. Still, the magic of what they laid down in the session pays testament to their artistry. First up is the lively popping track 'Akirfa' in which Lester gets space to let rip and exercise his talents. On the flip is the euphonious 'Untitled Ballad', a mellifluent lullaby for an end-of-the-day wind-down. Lost for a while, but thankfully not forgotten, these beautiful recordings finally get their chance to shine. Featuring artwork by the illustrious artist/designer/musician Raimund Wong (Total Refreshment/Floating World Pictures).

The enticing and exotic samba 'Redondo Sambao' is pure Brazilian fire. With beautiful female vocal-group arrangements, floating flutes and vibrating rhythms, this song oozes charm. Its only downside being that it is over far too soon. Originally released in 1967 on a compact 7" on the Som Maior imprint, the group sadly only had a couple of releases. 'Brasileiro' is taken from Jorginho Telles' self-titled 1971 album and also featured on a 7", both released on Copacabana Records. BONGO	FRANCA, HOMERO/SILVINHA - QUERO VER VOCE SAMBAR/MAS NAO DEIXE DE IR A floaty, smouldering underground bubbler, 'Quero Ver Você Sambar' is, to our knowledge, the only record by Homero França. Released on a 7" compacto on Chantecler Records in 1976; the song was co-written by Aloisio Silva, who was the composer behind the tripped-out, instrumental monster track 'Tema, R.' Hidden on the B-side of an obscure lost 7", 'Quero Ver Você Sambar' is soulful samba at its finest, with a beautiful call-and-response chorus, it brings the heat to the dancefloor. Vocalist Silvinha Araújo graced us with a number of wonderful recordings in the '60s and '70s, including collaborations with her husband Eduardo Araujo. 'Mas Nao Deixe De Ir' is taken from Silvinha's 1969 album 'Caminho Sobre Nuvens' on Odeon Recordings. The backing track loosely resembles Archie Bell & The Drells classic 'Tighten Up,' and here Silvinha's take gives the track a new twist, blessing it with her uniquely powerful, gravelly vocals that effortlessly ride the breakbeat. We stumbled upon his 'Para Viver' album on Arlequi Records from 1979, by chance, during a digging trip to Sao Paulo. Once the needle dropped, we were hooked by `Trânsito Livre,' a charming MPB number with cool chorus changes and all-round soothing vibes. Light and breezy, and all the better for it. Tony Nunes' 'Por Favor' shifts things up a few gears. It's a racing Hammond organ and wah-wah guitar-led funky groover. At just over two minutes long, 'Por Favor' doesn't mess about. It's pure energy firing on all cylinders. It was originally released in 1973 on Odeon Records, but the track has more of a '60s psyche-Mod-RnB feel and sensibility to it." ~Mr Bongo. This quirky, shuffling bossa nova/exotic number was penned by the fabulous Arnaud Rodrigues and is taken from a five-track 7" Compacto that features tracks that the group performed on television shows. The funky, soulful MPB 'O Viajante' by Wal Sant'ana is a long-time favourite at Mr Bongo. Originally released on 7" by RGE Records in 1974, this male lead with female backing vocals groover is a sure-fire hit on the dancefloor and is equally enjoyable on headphones or at home. It is a much-requested title with original copies becoming ever more-scarce and the price tag increasingly rising, so it feels fitting to present this stunning record once again for all to enjoy. Waltel Branco was born in Paranaguá, Brazil in 1929 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 2018. During his triumphant career he accumulated an impressive musical portfolio. A true maestro who from the 1950s onwards appeared on productions as a guitarist, writer, conductor, composer, and arranger. He worked with some of the greats of Brazilian music including Elis Regina, Dom Um Romao, Bossa Três, Marcos Valle and Tony Bizarro to name just a few. 'Meu Balanço' was originally released on CBS Records Brazil in 1975. It is Brazilian big band, orchestrated jazz-funk at its finest. Echoing the library and film productions created in Europe and the USA at the time, it also displays the hallmarks of Waltel's heritage with distinct threads of Brazilian flavour running throughout. The musicians on the record include under-the-radar players that were the backbone of the Brazilian music industry in the 1970s including Luizao Maia on bass, Edmundo Maciel on trombone and Paulinho Braga on drums. The album flirts between jazz-funk, cinematic library excursions, breaks and beats, easy-listening, and '70s cop show instrumentals. It is a breezy ride into Waltel's world, wonderfully nostalgic and of another time and place, yet snippets of the production echo the beats of contemporary hip-hop iconic artists such as Madlib, knxwledge and The Alchemist. Originally released under the title 'Samba Esporte Fino,' its release and subsequent international acclaim dovetailed with Seu Jorge's ascent into movie stardom. He is probably best known outside of Brazil for his work on Wes Anderson's 2004 film 'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou,' in which he played a starring role and his Portuguese covers of David Bowie records were a highlight of the soundtrack. Having initially found fame thanks to his standout performance as Knockout Ned in the revered movie 'City Of God.' 'Carolina' would cement his global fame and launch an illustrious musical career that has earnt him a Grammy nomination. Co-produced by Mario Caldatto of Beastie Boys and Planet Hemp fame, the album presented a vibrant, contemporary combination of samba and funk, backed by guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and horns. It kicks off with one of Seu's most loved tracks 'Carolina,' an anthemic feel-good classic with timeless energy, ending in a sing-along crescendo. His debut album 'Mulata Vamos A La Salsa' was originally released on MAG in 1970, comprising mainly cumbias and also guaracha, son and salsa tracks, mainly Luciani's own compositions. This album also stands out for the vocals by guarachero Vctor Kiko Fuentes and Benny del Solar, the star of countless Peruvian tropical music recordings. The album also prompted Luciano Luciani's interest in the innovative recordings coming out of Spanish Harlem in New York that would be manifested in his later recordings for MAG in 1975. 0485338 LP SMR 3 SOUMA	KALSOUM, OM - ENTA OMRI 'Enta Omri' is Om Kalsoum's most famous song, composed by Mohamed Abdel Wahab, who is still rightly regarded as a prominent musician and composer in Egypt. The creation of this song was the first long expected collaboration of two musical giants, which came at the repeated urging of Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser. There was talk in Egypt on the streets and in the media about what was believed to be a cold relationship between the two legends. Finally, after years of estrangement, Mohamed Abdel Wahab took the initiative and offered Om Kalsoum a song by poet Ahmed Shafiq Kamel, for which he had just composed a musical score. To his surprise, she responded positively and started to like the theme upon hearing it a few times. After a month of rehearsals, 'Enta Omri' was released in February 1964 to critical acclaim and packed performances. The event was so grand it was labeled "The Cloud Meeting." With 'Enta Omri,' Abdel Wahab opened up the traditional repertoire of the diva to a more innovative style, for which the composer was known for. The use of the electric guitar and a long instrumental intro, fusing oriental themes with Western musical elements, made the song particularly special, securing its place in Egyptian musical history. Despite some criticism from other Egyptian composers from that era, the song was soon recognised as a milestone and opened a path to modernise Arabic music for many other musicians and singers. 'Enta Omri' is loved by Arab and non-Arab audiences alike. Paying respect to the great diva, dozens of artists around the world have reinterpreted the song, adopting the intro's catchy guitar melody in their compositions. Both Michael Fondiler and Tom Snow had already played with legends. Michael had been a member of the pre-Spirit bands The Red Roosters and Western Union whilst Tom had been an original member of Gram Parsons' band The Like in 1965. With the addition of Michael's brother Steve, Bobby De Simone and Ian Espinoza they became Country and produced this marvellous album which holds similarities to the music of James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Bread. Impressed by the band, Peter Asher soon took over their leadership but despite recording another fine album their record label pulled the plug. Tom Snow stayed with Peter Asher for a solo career and later became a million selling songwriter for the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, Cher... The list goes on and on. This remastered album includes all original tracks, plus five bonus tracks that have never previously been released. One of these gems, 'SYLVIE', features Lowell George on slide guitar. Despite achieving little success in their day, 40 years on the "Funkers" are now highly regarded, finally achieving the credit that they were originally denied. The 'Country Funk' LP was released in May 1970 after a few name and line up changes, plus a short prison sentence. At the album's heart lie the influences of Buffalo Springfield, Poco and a dose of hairy Byrds, Moby Grape and the Dead. Although not a classic, this loosely groovin' but tight collection of songs moves along nicely with genuine heart and soul. Guests usually included, among others, Dave Mattacks of Fairport Convention, on drums. This music has a lyrical, compositional quality, overall. It would have to be considered 'acid folk rock', not too wierd, but with touches of middle eastern, classical, and medieval influence. Ms. Gaskin's instrument is her voice, which is the sound of velvet, flowing and... feminine. 0523295 LP LIFE 23 7427251064842 LIFE GOES ON	FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND - MADE IN JAPAN (IT) 'Made In Japan' is the third album by Japanese rock band Flower Travellin' Band, released in 1972. After meeting Lighthouse at the Expo '70 festival in Osaka, Flower Travellin' Band were invited to visit Canada. While there, the group recorded 'Made In Japan' with Lighthouse keyboardist Paul Hoffert helping produce. Due to George Wada becoming ill with tuberculosis, Canadian drummer Paul DeLong plays on some tracks on this album. The lyrics were written by Yoko Nomura, the wife of the band's manager, who translated conversations she had with the group and their ideas into English. 'Heaven And Hell' was written by Yamanaka in Japanese and she translated it. The song 'Hiroshima' is a re-imagining of 'Satori Part III' from their previous album 'Satori.' The introductory first track is an advertisement for a concert at Stanley Park Stadium by Flower Travellin' Band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Bob Seger and Teegarden & Van Winkle, with a clip of 'Lucky Man' playing in the background. The band was made up of Joe Yamanaka (vocals) - possibly an eastern version of Rob Tyner (MC5) - Hideki Ishima (guitars), Jun Kobayashi (bass) and George Wada (drums). By the end of 1970, they had relocated to Toronto, Canada and lived there until March of 1972.
