Repress of the compilation originally released with Moi J'connais Records and Mississippi Records in 2013. Unbelievably great psychedelic garage rock from 1966-1968. Including songs written by Mars Bonfire, their material is up there with the 13th Floor Elevators, Love and the Seeds in quality, but with an outsider edge to it. Human Expression was a tough as nails deep heavy group who, in spite of releasing three cool singles, never got the exposure they deserved back in the day. A few songs leaked out on vinyl on psych comps ('Optical Sound', 'Love At Psychedelic Velocity' and 'Reading Your Will') but the rest has not been on vinyl until now. Beautiful singer/songwriter ballads and frantic rockers sit side by side, creating a truly great lost classic of the 1960's. |

Early in 2020 Lehtisalo and Baker began trading sounds over the internet - fragmentary keyboard licks and textural guitar riffs, retro electro beats and pulsing bass lines - slowly constructing them into songs that combined a sort of '80s new wave/AOR aesthetic with a heavy/noisy shoegaze/industrial sound. The end result was 'Crocodile Tears,' five catchily anthemic songs channeling the perhaps unlikely pairing of Godflesh and Jan Hammer, electronic pop and pretty melodies mixed with textural guitars and heavy metal riffs. Finnish multi-instrumentalist Jussi Lehtisalo is founder of the experimental rock band Circle, active since 1991. He also performs with Pharaoh Overlord, Steel Mammoth, and Aktor, to name some of his many projects, and has collaborated with Isis' Aaron Turner as Split Cranium. He has been running Ektro Records since the mid-1990s and with Circle has released albums on such labels as Southern Lord, Riot Season, No Quarter, and Hydrahead Records. Canadian multi-instrumentalist Aidan Baker performs solo and with various ensembles, most notably the ambient metal duo Nadja. He has toured and performed around the world and released numerous albums on such labels as Alien8 Recordings, Important Records, Hydrahead Records, Karlrecords, and Southern Lord. |

Justin Swart (guitar/vocals) and Jason Hinch (drums) are a South African pair that give previous power duos a run for their money in the bluesy/fuzzed-out, minimalist rock department. Unlike, say, the White Stripes, however, these fellas mesh a swinging Yardbirds-meets-Raconteurs vibe (complete with large Stooges cojones) with a folk-induced mind-set that makes for a more cerebral listen whilst still rocking out completely, stripped of any bloated clutter. The guitar sound is a blissed-out Twin Reverb fuzz-fest that hits like a ten-ton hammer dressed in furs, the drums dig deep into the Bonham 'tight but loose' swing of Bonham legacy (complete with bombastic weight) and the vocals soar with ethereal, cavernous delicacy making for a delicious array of sounds that totally, totally dig on each other. A grass roots band that seek to become part of each individual listener's emotional fabric, the guys are down to earth and shed of pretension - Swart puts it best: "We want as many people as we can get to hear our music. Not for popularity, awards, fame, etc. but in the hope that our music will form a part of the lives and memories of people like so many of our musical heroes have done for us." "On this album we continue on the path we laid on our last demo 'Insurgency.' The album was recorded in our home studio, which was a natural choice after being fed up with the music business and "real" studios. The base tracks were recorded by the two of us, but there are also guest musicians on the album such as our live guitarist Atte Nikku from Rapid and John Finne from Obnoxious Youth. Emma Grönqvist and Sebastian Bergman from Chevalier and Iiro Karttunen from Emissary provided guest vocals. Musically we wanted to broaden our sound. This can be heard on the instrumentation: for example we combined acoustic drums with electronic sounds and a drum machine. Theremin and air rifles are also new additions to our sound pallette. We had thought of singing in Finnish for a long time. The lyrics deal with topical issues such as rising militarism, unemployment and life as a wheel in the capitalist system. The lyrics deal with important issues to us and it felt natural to sing about them in our mother tongue. We also wanted to make the lyrics comprehensible to our international audience so there we decided to make the album both in Finnish and English. The album is a new beginning and a closure. Returning to the home studio and working with Ektro after a long time means closing a circle in a way, but we are looking to the future at the same time. Ranger has risen from the ruins." |

Both the reviews in the press and the sales are disappointing and put a damper on the joy. Nevertheless, the group is invited to perform in Valencia, Spain, where they have an unexpected success. |

Rare and unreleased '80s bangers from Sao Tomé & Principe's most iconic singer. Pursuing their work with their friend DJ Tom B, Bongo Joe Records is proud of sharing the fourth effort on their Sao Tomé & Principe series: 'Recordar é Viver,' the first volume of an anthology dedicated to the one and only Pedro Lima, "A voz do povo de Sao Tomé" (the people's voice of Sao Tomé). 'Recordar é Viver: Antologia Vol. 1' features some previously unreleased tracks and gives a comprehensive look into the discography of one of the islands' biggest stars, known for his political outspokenness as much as for his soft voice, delicate rumbas, and high-energy puxas. With his band Os Leonenses he built a brand new genre around the strong rhythms and infectious energy of Sao-Toméan samba socopé ("only with the feet" in Portuguese), but with the influence of Congolese soukous, Cape Verdean coladeira, elements from French West-Indies cadence/compas, and Brazilian afoxé, it soon developed into the infectiously danceable style known as "puxa." The band kept playing together up until Pedro's death in 2019, performing at large events around the islands and on the continent. But Pedro shined also on his own. Alone, he demonstrated his compositional skills and ability to balance the band's powerful rhythm section with Sao Tomé & Principe's harmonic backing vocal traditions, creating strong, dance floor ready puxas or melodic, delicate rumbas. Pedro Lima died in 2019, leaving behind the 23 children he fathered, with thousands of mourners accompanying him to his final resting place. The public funeral, paid for by ex-president Pinto da Costa, was one of the biggest the islands have ever seen. In late October 2019, following a successful UK tour ending in a sold-out concert at the mythical Roundhouse in London, SUNN O))) entered studio 4 of the BBC Maida Vale. On invitation to record a live session for Mary Anne Hobbs to be broadcast on Samhain via her excellent radio show on BBC6. To enter the legendary John Peel studios was to enter a temple of music and experimentation, liberty in ideas and sound. The band was nearing the end of a long touring year around the 'Life Metal' and 'Pyroclast' albums. SUNN O))) had developed the compositions extensively, embracing the formative concepts of the 'Life Metal' album conceptually and emotionally, but actualised and evolved into vast, open and bright hypersaturated arrangements. Particularly the pieces the band chose to perform on this recording: 'Troubled Air' and 'Pyroclasts'. The former enriched into a total aspect of the band's ethos and form in many ways, and 'Pyroclasts' had evolved to become all-inclusive radiation of O))). The radiation embraces collaboration and freedom of interpretation by each player, within a structural format of the massive monuments of sound and distortion which define SUNN O))). Sought-after Belgian minimal synth finally reissued and compiled on LP. They were interesting times, the early eighties. Against a backdrop of cold war and economic crises, the DIY attitude of the earlier punk movement had spawned near countless new genres where artists and bands broke the three-chord guitar mould and experimented with new content matter, singular song structures and - in many cases - new instruments. Synthesizers became affordable and were no longer the sole privilege of rock millionaires. All around the globe, musical creativity boomed as never before, and Belgium was no exception: Digital Dance, Snowy Red, The Names, Pseudocode, Marine, 1000 Ohm, De Kommeniste, M.Bryo & D.M.T., De Brassers, Struggler, Siglo XX are but a few legendary names of bands and artists who started making a name for themselves. In Leuven, things were happening as well. Until then, the music scene in this rather provincial town had been dominated by straightforward rock and blues acts. Not for much longer, though: in places like Arno'z and (later) The Gladhouse, where young budding artists met with kindred spirits, bands were often formed on the spot and, more importantly, started to make ripples. Ludo Camberlin and Karel 'Bam' Saelemaekers already had a certain track record in Leuven's burgeoning music microcosm. But what they shared would become the cornerstone of A Blaze Colour (Against The Dark Trees Beyond): a fascination for new forms and instruments, a penchant for sonic adventure and a profound love for gripping songs. The full band name, by the way, was inspired by a phrase from the Irish-American novelist J.P. Donleavy, a writer who belongs in the definitely-worth-checking-out section. |

'SONIC EXPEDITION INTO THE PERUVIAN AMAZON 1972-1986' - Less than a hundred miles inland from the capital City of Lima lies the great Peruvian jungle, an untamed land of impenetrable forests and endless winding rivers. In its isolated cities, cut off from the fashions of the capital, a unique style of music began to develop, inspired equally by the sounds of the surrounding forests, the roll of the mighty Amazon and Ucayali Rivers, and the rhythms of cumbia picked up from distant stations on transistor radios. With the arrival of electricity, a new generation of young musicians started plugging in their guitars and trading in their accordions for synthesizers: Amazonian cumbia was born. Powered by fast-paced timbale rhythms, driven by spidery, treble-damaged guitar lines, and drenched in bright splashes of organ, Amazonian cumbia was like a hyperactive distant cousin of surf music crossed with an all-night dance party in the heart of the forest. While many of the genre's greatest tracks were instrumental, and others were simple celebrations of life in the jungle, the goal of every song was to keep the party going. Radio stations in Lima remained unaware of the new electric sounds emanating from the jungle, but a handful of pioneering record producers ventured over the mountain passes to the cities of Tarapoto, Moyobamba, Pucallpa - even Iquitos, a city reachable only by boat or plane - and lured dozens of bands to the recording studios of the capital to lay down their best tracks. Although many became local hits, few were ever heard outside the Amazonian region... until now. This album, a trans-Atlantic joint release by Riot Season (UK) and Echodelick (US), lives by slips, fuck-ups, and simple, joyous expression.
