From the sun-soaked beaches, verdant valleys, and soaring mountains, to the hard-boiled legacy of Los Angeles and the bright, neon promise of Hollywood, the band is a reflection of the environment in which they are immersed. Dream Phases began with a vision of evolving the sounds launched by legendary L.A. bands such as The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, as well as those who followed, including The Rain Parade, Elliott Smith, Darker My Love, and Autolux. As the synths on the song attest, 'Helen Highway' was written while listening to a lot of Gary Numan, with the synthesizer tracks layered in a way that lets the listener fall into the song and be swept along. The lyrics relate how we only get one chance at life, reminding us not to be complacent and to remember we can change continually, pursuing the life we truly want to live. With the influences of not only Gary Numan, but The Verve and The Velvet Underground, the song builds to an ending of pure release. 'Tandy' is about reflecting on a past relationship and questioning its outcome. Written with a garage-psych feel influenced by L.A.'s Paisley Underground movement (The Rain Parade, The Dream Syndicate, The Three O'Clock), it's a song writer Brandon Graham envisions being played by DJ friends at local psych club nights. Like The Creation, the band uses a bow on some of the guitars to create an especially unmistakable psychedelic sound. A 12-string Rickenbacker overdub on the bridge is evidence of Brandon's immersion in a massive book on The Byrds (especially their 1965-68 heyday) while making the song. 0491107 7" HYP 16 2090504911078 HYPNOTIC BRIDGE	FLOWER MACHINE - THROUGH A LONDON WINDOW/ONE IN A MILLION Starting with their 2004 debut album 'Chalk Dust Dream Of The Tea Cozy Mitten Company,' The Flower Machine has been one of the longest-running yet most obscure bands in the Los Angeles psych scene. Led by Dutch-American singer and guitarist Peter Quinnell, the band has consistently focused on crafting dense, heavily-overdubbed psych-pop songs, delivered through an intermittent series of loud and chaotic performances over the years in the LA club scene. Strongly influenced by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, The Outsiders, and Kevin Ayers, The Flower Machine's idiosyncratic take on psychedelia was shaped during Peter's formative years in Amsterdam, a city where the spirit of 1967 in many ways never ended. Currently based in San Luis Obispo, California, The Flower Machine recorded the basic tracks for their Hypnotic Bridge single in a cavernous warehouse near the airport, using an 8-track machine. The tapes were then taken to a studio in the leafy realm of Cambria, where they added sitar, flute, organ, backwards guitars and subtle layers of mellotron cello to complete the A-side, 'Through A London Window,' which was inspired in part by Antonioni's 1966 cinematic masterpiece 'Blow Up.' 'One In A Million,' perhaps the most obscure item in the Pink Floyd cannon, makes its vinyl debut on the B-side. Surviving only on a murky audience tape from a gig in Copenhagen in September, 1967, the song is thought to be a joint composition between Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. It even may have been an early version of the rumored 'She Was A Millionaire' single The Pink Floyd were working on to follow up 'See Emily Play.' Peter spent ages decoding its lyrics, enabling us to present here, for the first time ever, a fully realized version of a song that many consider to be one of the last holy relics of 1967. 0481237 7" REP 32 5060331751847 1960'S	HENDRIX, JIMI - HENDRIX ON STAGE 1966-1967 Hendrix flew into London from New York on September 23rd with his new manager Chas Chandler and within a couple of days started auditing for his band. Noel Redding got the bass job on September 30th with drummer Mitch Miller joining on October 5th. After 3 days of rehearsals, the Experience played a four-date French tour supporting Johnny Hallyday and Brian Auger. Side 1 opens with 'Wild Thing', the finale of the October 18th Paris Olympia show, broadcast by RTL. The band's first British radio show was for 'BBC Pop North' and featured 'Hey Joe' and 'Rock Me Baby'. It was recorded in London on 30th January 1967 for playback at Playhouse Theatre in Manchester from where it was broadcast on 7th February. Based in Boston and inspired by The Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine and other drone-laden, feedback-and-fuzz-loving bands, Magic Shoppe have offered up their own heady concoction of dark, dreamy, shoegaze psychedelia on four EPs and four full-length albums over the past eight years, including 2019's 'Circles' LP. Coincidentally yet appropriately labeling their reverb-heavy sound as "hypnotic," Magic Shoppe's single for Hypnotic Bridge leads off with A-side 'Doppelgänger,' a song originally titled 'Salventius' after the Dutch artist known for his "single-line" drawings of faces. Shelved from an earlier project, the name 'Doppelgänger' was actually suggested by Salventius, given it's a sort of "double" for the original concept for the song. Songwriter and lead guitarist Josiah Webb used three fuzz pedals (with a "fully cocked wah" at the end) with tones turned to pure treble for the fuzz. The ending riff is a nod to Roger McGuinn: highly compressed, clean and with maximum treble, creating a tone that evokes The Byrds' 'Eight Miles High.' Not a reference to San Francisco's airport but, rather, an acronym for 'Skintight Futuristic Outfit,' 'S.F.O.' was conceived and tracked in a single session. The band originally intended to play the song quickly, then reverse it completely, possibly adding forward overdubs, but after hearing the results decided to give it more of a "split-brain" dynamic. The first part of the song is played normally, but after some intentional audio degradation (and Vox Cheetah/Fender Twin amp feedback), descends into a total reverse copy of the beginning, with the exception of a forwards vocal overdub. Their influences range from early Pink Floyd and Beatles through the cream of '60s psychedelia and beyond. Evolving from from UK psych sensations Instant Flight (who collaborated with the legendary Arthur Brown), Mark & The Clouds have released two albums of psych pop splendor on Mega Dodo: 'Blue Skies Opening' (2014) and 'Cumulus' (2017) as well as 'Waves' (2021) on Gare du Nord. Psych pop for the 21st Century, 'You And Me In Space' takes us on a cosmic trip to the edge of the galaxy, fueled by love and a blissed-out dissolution of all that keeps us from soaring beyond our everyday confines. Recorded in an industrial estate in North London, the band set the scene by filling the room with multi-colored lights before deploying a full range of vintage equipment and psychedelic effects: backwards Telecaster through a Big Muff pedal, Hofner bass, space-age organ and even high-pitched, fuzzed-out vibrations made by blowing through blades of grass. Recorded during the 'Waves' album sessions and selected specifically as an exclusive song for the Hypnotic Bridge 45, 'Clocks' is dedicated to those who love the sound of the wah-wah guitar in its most psychedelic setting. 0501350 7" HYP 24 2090505013504 HYPNOTIC BRIDGE	SIMIAN LIFE - ANOTHER WAY DOWN/BRIEFING Simian Life came into being as a studio project for brothers and longtime Los Angeles psych veterans Andy Campanella (Chief Nowhere, Occult Wisdom) and Robert Campanella (BJM, The Quarter After). Inspired by intrepid acts mainly from the golden eras of yesteryear, the brothers, along with like-minded collaborators, seek to capture the sounds of wherever their muses may take them. Whether the song be mellower (à la Nick Drake or Roy Harper) or heavier (à la The Move or The Who), Simian Life puts an emphasis on instrumental and vocal texture in hopes of creating an atmosphere for going within or travelling throughout... or both. In making 'Another Way Down,' the brothers Campanella were joined by Misha Bullock on drums and vocals along with Gabriel Lazar on piano. In producing the track, they were inspired by the studio wizardry and experimentation that came out of the latter half of the 1960s, much as it did with 'Revolver'-era Beatles. For example, a Roland Space Echo tape delay and ADT (Artificial Double-Tracking) were applied to the vocals for an otherworldly vibe. Additionally, they used a recording technique known as varispeed on the guitar solo, which was purposely recorded at half-speed and an octave lower, thus giving it a frantic effect when sped up to song's actual tempo. The flip side, 'Briefing,' is an excerpt from a forthcoming Simian Life song that took on a life of its own. On it, Matt Cooker provided the cello, Isabel Escalante the violin, Garret Wayne Walters the saxophone, and Rishi Dhir of Elephant Stone the sublime sitar. Largely inspired by the lush, semi-orchestral soundtrack work from late '60s and early '70s Europe, this track layers a repeated string theme and solos by sitar and saxophone over a driving, rock backbeat. It's no accident the name Timothy Eerie is so close to that of Timothy Leary. This is the aural equivalent of two tabs and a trip down the rabbit hole. Since their first release in 2017, these day-glo denizens of the (Orange) Sunshine State have been kicking around the underground, making quite a name for themselves in a short period of time. Like many bands of this genre, there's been a revolving door of players, but that only lends to the mystique of Timothy Eerie's sound: a sound that started as a bedroom recording project and has now moved far beyond the bedroom. 'I Fear The Void Is Waiting For Me' (inspired by a serious dose of mushrooms and the resulting experience of dissolution and rebirth) and 'Acid Lake' were both recorded in a few different places. Bass, drums and rhythm guitar were tracked live at a studio on a college campus. The band slipped into BB King's as they were closing one night and recorded the organ parts on a vintage Hammond and Leslie setup in about 15 minutes. The vocals and other overdubs were all done in the bedrooms of the various band members. The idea was to make the songs sounds as loud, fast and energetic as they sound live. Debut album of this young psychedelic post punk band from Mantova, Italy. The "beat", the hypnotic and obsessive force that recalls primitive dances, is the concept of 'Make It Better'. The album takes place in an imaginary "beat club", which is at the same time a place of liberation, fun and aggregation. The use of the "beat" has characterized humans since the dawn and has spanned the centuries, changing shape but not substance. In 'Make It Better' the beat is told as an impersonal spirit that advances, cold and impassive like the vocal lines, and guides the band towards a sort of artistic emancipation. The beat is also a way to stay united and purifying oneself from the "responsibilities" of real life and the transition from youth to adulthood, in short from the fear of not "being good enough". Finding refuge in music, with the legitimate dream of even making it a job, or simply going out to drink and dance with friends ("I wanna get drunk, just keep dancing with my friends", from the title track). A/lpaca's music picks up the signals from sixties London, in particular of bands such as Pink Floyd and Soft Machine (indirectly honored in the song I Am Kevin Ayers), mixes them with the Teutonic drive of Can, take some coolness from Joy Division and finally updates everything with the modern example of Thee Oh Sees and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Self-released CDRs and appearances on compilations from the likes of Drone Rock Records and Fruits de Mer culminated in the much lauded vinyl release of 'From Now To Now' (The Weird Beard label) - a veritable tour de force of krautrock inflected, psychedelic spacerock. It was at this point that band mainstay Neil Whitehead called a brief hiatus to rethink the band's direction. With this second excavation of previously unreleased live BBC session performances spanning the period 1967 - 1971, 'Shapes And Sounds' becomes a series and volume 2 features a completely different line up of bands from last years' set. Pride of place on this second edition arguably goes to the Gun, with three astonishing performances that were recorded nearly a year before 'Race With The Devil' which illustrate their menu of mod and psych pop, with cracking versions of Rupert's Peoples 'Hold On', Paul Simons 'A Most Peculiar Man' and a quite splendid airing of their legendary 'Light On The Wall'! The Casuals surprise with the beat of 'Midnight Confessions' and 'Take Me For A Little While' as well as a fine rendering of 'Jesamine', whilst the Mirage perform a live version of their May 1967 single 'The Wedding Of Ramona Blair'. The Alan Bown play an excellent take of 'Magic Handkerchief' and even more interestingly offer two numbers that never appeared on any Bown release, with the self penned progressive popper 'Movie Star Baby' and a brilliant interpretation of the Association's 'Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies'. Also with three tracks on Shapes And Sounds are Wales' Bystanders, who turn in a lovely version of 'Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day' as well as a glorious homage to the Byrds with 'Renaissance Fair'. Even better and long talked about in collectors circles but never previously released is their absolutely stunning rendition of 'I Am The Walrus', which Top Sounds are sure will disappoint no-one! Sourced from an off air recording of their only British television appearance on Disco 2, Killing Floor perform "Milkman" from their Out Of Uranus LP in superb quality (the TV show was wiped decades ago) and of similarly heinous rarity are live tracks from Portrait and Katch 22, who turn in forceful renderings of 'Born To Be Wild' and 'The Price Of Lov' respectively (the latter of which is better than the Status Quo cover!) The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with twelve of the sixteen tracks sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The other performances have been taken from excellent off air recordings and similarly shine and though few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. Top Sounds Records return once again with another collection of music recorded live for BBC radio and TV during the late 1960s and early 70s, with a significant proportion of wonderful material long thought lost. The compilation begins and ends with some most welcome performances from BILL FAY, documenting his appearance on the Disco 2 television show in early 1971. With the TV programme being wiped this is the only known evidence of Bill playing live, and he performs in superb audio quality 'Tell It Like It Is' and a song he never recorded anywhere else called 'After The Revolution'. Three tracks from THE PRETTY THINGS late 1968 session for Top Gear have been widely available for a while but the fourth, a version of 'Old Man Going', was never retained by the BBC - needless to say Top Sounds have located a master tape of the performance and are pleased to inform the Pretties' fans that its even better than the album version, with the fuzzed guitar cranked up to maximum! A double CD of DAVE DEE, DOZY, BEAKY, MICK and TICH's BBC sessions was released in 2008, but Shapes And Sounds Three adds to that considerable legacy with a better version of 'Frustration' and more spectacularly, the band's fantastic psychedelic rock assault on the First Edition's ust Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)'. Long time favourites with psych pop enthusiasts are THE END who have had much previously unreleased music released in the past, their BBC sessions however have always proved elusive as the BBC wiped their tapes. Rescued from off air recordings Top Sounds present two numbers from their 1968 'Top Gear', with an atmospheric rendering of 'Shades Of Orange' and a brilliant take of 'Under The Rainbow' which is wildly different from the studio version on the 'Introspection' album. Like The End, Geordie psychsters SKIP BIFFERTY have been well served by compilations - 'In The Morning' and 'Follow The Path Of The Stars' however now appear in pristine quality straight from transcription disc whilst 'On Love' and 'Yours For At Least 24' (from their first ever radio session) make their debut and were previously presumed lost. BBC material by CUPID'S INSPIRATION similarly emerges for the first time with a quite splendid mix of pop, blues and rock across four numbers, only one of which was ever released in their original discography. Especially noteworthy is a crunching take of 'Dream' and a frantic version of Garnet Mimms' 'As Long As I Have You'. GULLIVERS PEOPLE prove admirably they could deliver psych pop with an excellent performance of the Bee Gees' psych opus 'Horizontal' whilst 'On A Day Like This' improves on the single, then finally Plymouth group THE EARTH offer some rather good tunes with live versions of 'Everyone Sing The Song' and the prog rock favourite 'Resurrection City' from 1969. The music has all been professionally restored and mastered and the presentation is immaculate and as with the previous 'Shapes And Sounds' volumes, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period flavoured package. The CD has a twenty eight page colour booklet based on a vintage Radio Times magazine packed with illustrations, band histories and listings of all their known BBC sessions written and supplied by Nigel Lees, author of much of Record Collector magazine's 'The British Psychedelic Trip' series. Bar the appearance of some of the Skip Bifferty recordings which have previously appeared in off air quality, none of these performances have ever been commercially available and most have not been heard in public since the 60's. Francesco Messina is perhaps best known for his collaboration with fellow composer Raul Lovisoni on the album 'Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo,' originally released on seminal Italian label Cramps in 1979. Along with contemporaries Franco Battiato, Juri Camisasca and Giusto Pio, Messina would help reshape the world of modern composition with an organic rawness and haunting beauty. In 1979, Messina was asked to perform at the Teatro Quartiere in Milan. As the composer writes in the liner notes, "Due to the limited availability of key technical features, it would have been too complicated to perform 'Prati Bagnati,' and therefore I opted for these three pieces instead. We had never actually tried them all together, so I thought about renting a recording studio the previous afternoon. In that way, we could rehearse in a suitable place and use the opportunity to record the music on tape." Unreleased for over thirty years, the recordings on 'Reflex' have an unadorned, almost improvisational feel. 'Untitled' (featuring Lovisoni's plaintive flute) and 'I Nuovi Pescheti' are full of meditative piano passages that lend an aura of new age, while the title track is more insistent with unfurling chords layered in real time via a reel-to-reel tape machine, resembling Steve Reich's mesmeric phase-shifting works of the '60s. A central figure within the Italian avant-garde, Francesco Messina gracefully expands his country's contribution to Minimalism. This first-time vinyl release is recommended for fans of Joanna Brouk, Luciano Cilio and Charlemagne Palestine.

'Défense De' was the first album of Jean-Jacques Birgé and Francis Gorgé, before founding Un Drame Musical Instantané with Bernard Vitet in 1976. They had started to play together while at high school, and on their debut LP they were joined by percussionist Shiroc (who also played in Speed Limit). The album's four tracks were recorded in the family apartment of free jazz producer Sebastien Bernard, who had several nice instruments belonging to his father, like a pipe organ, an electric piano, a xylophone and a cello, a.o. The songs were taped on an 8-track recorder and also feature Antoine Duvernet from Urban Sax, who added tenor sax. Shiroc and pianist Jean-Louis Bucchi (also from Speed Limit) joined the duo some months later and the songs they feature in were recorded live in studio. Birgé and Gorgé gigged as a trio with Shiroc, sometimes with the addition of Gilles Rollet on further percussion. The resulting sounds were released on the 'June Sessions' DVD (included as a free bonus on this LP). The DVD will include the experimental movie 'La Nuit Du Phoque' made by Jean-Jacques Birgé and Bernard Mollerat in 1974. The movie is a mix between avant-garde French movie and experimental ambience which takes the viewer back in time to 1974. The second part of the DVD will include 'June Sessions' which are very long pieces made by the trio (or quartet at times). SIDEWINDERS - CUACHA!
First-time reissue of this 1987 sleeper rural rock classic. The Sidewinders formed in the spring of 1985. The group released 'Cuacha!' in 1987 (and again in 1988), and subsequently signed to RCA/Mammoth Records, with whom they released two full-length albums, 1989's 'Witchdoctor' and 1990's 'Auntie Ramos' Pool Hall.' 'Witchdoctor' cracked the lower echelons of the Billboard 200 on the strength of two rock radio hits. The band scored exposure on MTV and VH1 and embarked on a worldwide tour. But the Sidewinders were soon sidelined due to legal problems stemming from a challenge over the band's name. As the Sand Rubies, they released an album on Polydor/Atlas in 1993 (at one point, Pearl Jam served as their opening act). However, the strain of the legal tussle led the Sand Rubies to dissolve during a tour in 1993, just as two other Arizona rock bands, Gin Blossoms and The Refreshments, attracted mainstream attention.
