VARIOUS - PYRAMID EDITS
Pyramid was an underground/homemade label created by Toby Robinson and his friend Robin Page (the Fluxus artist) while they were living in Cologne, Germany, in the '70s. Toby - aka The Mad Twiddler, aka Genius P. Orridge - is well-known to Krautrock collectors as one of a number of engineers working at Stockhausen's WDR and Dierks Studio in Cologne in the mid-1970s, where he assisted on recordings by many famous Kraut bands such as Can, Birth Control, Mythos or Dzyan. Pyramid was home to a series of fascinating homemade albums by impossible and lost-in-time kraut-kosmische bands like Cozmic Corridors, Golem, Nazgul... all of them reissued by Mental Experience in the last years. One of the most celebrated tracks from the Pyramid catalogue is 'Interstellar Shortwave' by The Astral Army, originally included on the 'Cologne Curiosities' comp. It's a heavy-disco-kraut-groove, DJ friendly, Hawkwind-inspired track recorded circa mid-'70s, and it's presented here in its original version - pressed at 45rpm for maximum and expanding sound quality - and also as an edit by Gareth Goddard aka Cherrystones, who also offers another edit of 'The Dead Marshes', one of the tracks included on The Nazgul album. Here, Cherrystones transforms the spooky, avant-garde sound of the track into a kind of cinematic, horror spaghetti western soundtrack. To round up the 12", there's an experimental Cherrystones rework of 'Daruber', a dark ambient/kosmische classic by Cozmic Corridors. 300 copies pressing, includes digital download card. SIDE 1: 1. Released in 1969 at the height of hysteria about satanism whipped up by the Manson killings, the album was withdrawn by the Dunwich label after a photo surfaced of Charles Manson carrying a copy. Whether it was coincidence, influence, or good old show biz imitation, Coven's 1969 album featuring the lead-off track 'Black Sabbath' was released the same year as the formation of the more popular heavy metal band. To make the story more even interesting, Coven featured a bass player named Oz Osborne. 0501699 CD SFCD 13 2090505016994 STUDIO FLEISCH	ELECTRIC ORANGE - PATCHWORK 1996-99 1996 to 1999 was a weird time for Electric Orange. It was the time of trip hop, electro, drum'n'bass and big beat, styles they already introduced on 'Cyberdelic' and before. Most of the music was made electronically with analogue synthesizers, samplers, Atari ST and the mixing was always live and analogue. At this time digital recording was still very expensive and they didn't own any analogue multitrack recorder anymore, so it was a natural move for them to produce like this. Many tracks are previous unreleased and some of this music was already released on some CDRs about 20 years ago in very limited editions. These tracks always felt like just raw material, so they had the idea to compile an album of the best parts. All you can hear was done in 1996 to 1999, no remixing or re-recording took place. All they did, was to edit most of the tracks and combine all these bits a continuous mix - like a weird audio movie that could have been the lost album from that era. And it's high time, too... Norma was discovered while singing to Catskill summer campers by producer Herb Bernstein, who brought her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. Crewe signed her to his New Voice label, and success was instantaneous: the title song to 'Walkin' My Cat Named Dog' went to #22 on the charts. But, despite the album's folk-pop trappings, Norma Tanega was not an artist destined to stay at the top of the charts for long; her voice was unconventional, and her songs were too idiosyncratic, not sticking to typical song structure or even meter (for example, 'No Stranger Am I' is set to a 5/4 time signature). In fact, Tanega's songs were so unusual that she had to hire session musicians to play them on the North American tour she took to support the album instead of her erstwhile back-up band The Outsiders! Upon returning, she then embarked on a British tour that was to change her life forever; there she met Dusty Springfield, and the two embarked on an artistic and romantic relationship that prompted Tanega to move to London for five years. After the pair broke up, Tanega wound up moving to California and shifted to playing percussion in more experimental settings, following the wayward muse that makes 'Walkin' My Cat Named Dog' such an entrancing and unique listening experience to this day. As such, it's probably his most accessible record for those approaching his music from a strictly rock background. An early version of 'Skylab' hints at the grand version to come on 'Tchip Tchip'; some of the album sounds like a Belgian version of Steely Dan, and at times you might even hear a little early Eno/Robert Wyatt/Kevin Ayers prog punctuated by a couple of drinking songs. Inspired by the success of such shows as 'The Munsters' and 'The Addams Family', penned by a couple of writers for Laugh-In, and featuring the voice of F-Troop's Larry Storch, 'Groovie Goolies' first aired in September 1970 as a pairing with 'The Archies' spin-off 'Sabrina, The Teenage Witch'. Though it only lasted 16 episodes, the 'Groovie Goolies' cult lasts to this day (even inspiring the name of the S.F. punk band The Groovie Ghoulies). Why? One guess... the music! Just like 'The Archies' did with Andy Kim, Ron Dante and Jeff Barry, 'Groovie Goolies' brought A-list talent to the task of composing and performing two songs for every episode, including Dick Monda and, for this album, Sherry Gayden and Janet Martin a.k.a. Richard Delvy and Ed Fournier of the surf-rock band The Challengers (that's Fournier dressed as Wolfie on the back cover). And playing in the band: legendary guitarist Larry Carlton and Elvis Presley bassist Ron Tutt! The whole record has a very Archies vibe with some very groovy, er, groovie touches, like the fuzztone guitar on 'Save Your Good Lovin' for Me,' the wah-wah on 'Frankie' and even some sitar. 0501536 LP RGM 1085 0848064010852 REAL GONE MUSIC	AWAKENING - HEAR, SENSE AND FEEL The Awakening were the only "group" recorded by Black Jazz, for which they made two albums; those two releases happen to be among the most collectible in the label's entire catalog, which, given the value Black Jazz titles command in the open market, gives one an idea just how sought-after these records are. Recorded in 1972, 'Hear, Sense, And Feel' marked the band's debut, and featured the same line-up that played on next year's 'Mirage'. Being from Chicago, The Awakening's line-up unsurprisingly boasts a heavy connection to the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) collective that claimed The Art Ensemble of Chicago among its most esteemed artists; in fact, both bassist Reggie Willis and tenor saxman/flautist Ari Brown were AACM members and appeared on albums with Muhal Richard Abrams, Lester Bowie, and Anthony Braxton among others. The other members of The Awakening, on the other hand, hailed from the city's soul jazz scene, specifically Young Holt Unlimited, for whom co-leaders trumpeter Frank Gordon and keyboardist Ken Chaney played (trombonist Steve Galloway played on Melvin Jackson's soul jazz classic 'Funky Skull'). And it is that sweet spot, somewhere between the free jazz and Afrocentric explorations of the Art Ensemble and the rhythm-heavy soul jazz sound being recorded at Chicago-based labels like Brunswick and Cadet, that 'Hear, Sense And Feel' lands. Which explains why this album sells for hundreds of dollars online if you can find it at all. A lost gem worthy of all the attention we think this reissue is going to get! Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou is arguably West Africa's best-kept secret. Their output, both in quantity and quality, was astonishing. During several trips to Benin Samy Ben Redjeb managed to collect roughly 500 songs which Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou had recorded between 1970 and 1983. With so much material to choose from Samy Ben Redjeb decided to split it into Volume 1 and 2. While Volume 2 will be material the band recorded under an exclusive contract with the label Albarika Store, the band also "secretly" recorded with an array of smaller labels based around Cotonou, Benin's largest city, and the capital city of Porto Novo. It is those tracks (all officially licensed) that are presented here on Volume 1. 'Volume One (The Vodoun Effect - Funk & Sato from Benins Obscure Labels, 1973-1975)', released by Analog Africa at the end of 2008, was a collection of amazing lo-fi recordings produced for various labels around Benin. 'Volume Two' showcases superbly recorded tracks, courtesy of the EMI studios in Lagos, Nigeria, one of the best studios in the region. All tracks here were recorded for the mighty Albarika Store label and its enigmatic producer, Adissa Seidou. The idea for this compilation was born five years ago when Samy Ben Redjeb, Analog Africa's founder and compiler, first heard the addictive funk track 'Malin Kpon O' (included here), which was originally released in 1975 on Albarika Store. That discovery triggered the compiler's curiosity and what followed was a long journey through the musical history of Benin and the history of its most important ambassador, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou who started as a children entertainment group and went on to become one of the greatest bands of their era. The four year journey involved criss-crossing Benin, Togo and Niger trying to get hold of the bands recording output which were found in record stocks and had laid untouched for a quarter of a century, reviewing reels and master tapes at the headquarters of Albarika Store, conducting interviews with all the living members of the band, searching for pictures of the Orchestre and licensing the music from the composers and producer. The result: approximately 100 pictures, 120 master tapes, 20 hours of interviews and a few hundred Orchestre Poly-Rythmo vinyl records - 500 songs in total - some of which previously unreleased. Almost half of those tracks were recorded for Benin's number one label - Albarika Store. Fifteen out of 200 tracks were carefully selected for this compilation which comes with a massive 44-page booklet filled with amazing pictures of the band, a complete discography and a biography tracing the band from its foundation as Groupe Meloclem in 1964 via Sunny Blacks band (1965), Orchestre Poly-Disco (1966), El Ritmo (1967) and finally Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou in 1968. During the period presented here -1969 to 1979- the mighty Orchestre was without any doubt one of Africa's most innovative groups. Capable of playing any style of music, the band moved from traditional Vodoun rhythms to Funk, Salsa or Afro-beat seamlessly and quickly became the powerhouse of Benin's music scene, backing most of Africa's stars touring the country, such Manu Dibango, Ernesto Djedje, Bella Bellow, as well as supporting an array of local composers, such as Honore Avolonto, Antoine Dougbé and Danialou Sagbohan. Given the size of the tiny country one could think that Poly-Rythmo must have been too big a fish for such a small pond, but the more one understands Benin's culture and traditions the more it appears that a phenomenon such as Orchestre Poly-Rythmo couldn't have happened anywhere else. Some of the planet's most exciting rhythms are related to the complex Vodoun religion born in Benin. Those rhythms, supported by chants and dances, have been transmitted from generation to generation and are still being performed to this date, a few hundred years after they were created. The composers and arrangers of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo understood that they were surrounded by a gold mine of inspirational sounds which, if modernised and mixed in with whatever was in fashion at that particular moment, could have a strong impact on the urban population. Barry Thomas Goldberg was 23 in 1974, the year his Minneapolis power pop group, The Batch, split up. Rudderless, he set about recording his solo album 'Misty Flats', and though few would hear it in its day, he hit on something very special indeed. "In 1974, the world was weary, the Vietnam War was ending, America was at this place where it didn't know where it was heading, it was the fumes of Watergate days," says Goldberg now. "I'd just left my band, and I didn't know where I was heading either. And thats what 'Misty Flats' represents: neither high road nor low, but somewhere in between." This first ever vinyl reissue comes with an essay by Peter Relic interviewing Goldberg and includes unseen archival photos.
