BLIND DOG - THE LAST ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN DOG (2LP)
Blind Dog formed in Sweden in 1995 when Nilsson and Thell needed a drummer for a party gig. Thomas was called in to do one gig but the band stuck together since they discovered that everything worked so well. Blind Dog recorded a demo in 1996, which was discovered by RoadRunner and rendered them a place on the compilation album 'Burn One Up' in 1997. Getting tired of waiting for a record deal the band released their debut album themselves in 1999 - 'The Last Adventures Of Captain Dog', which is considered a classic among the underground heavy rock community. The album gave birth to instant classics like 'When I'm Finally Gone', '10.000 Reasons' and 'Beyond My Reach'. This album was picked up by MeteorCity and re-released by them the year after. In 2002 Blind Dog, was contacted by Listenable Records and a cooperation started with the band and the two labels which to date has resulted in one album: 'Captain Dog Rides Again' (2003). After just over ten years as a band in July 2008 Blind Dog decided to quit, recording one final album in May that year entitled 'Captain Dog Logs Out' and releasing it for free download. Now, 20 years after its original release, their debut album is re-released and remastered by The Lab Records as a deluxe double-vinyl edition. |

Mid-1980's suburban Chicago punk. Naperville's Protagonists formed in the wake of the first wave of Chicago hardcore punk. Instead of being inspired by the first generation weirdo Chicago punks like Silver Abuse and Tutu & The Pirates or the hardcore legion that followed (AOF, ROTA, Negative Element, etc.), Protagonists drew their motivation from sources as diverse as punk icons Buzzcocks, The Dickies and The Damned to prime era '50s and '60s teen anthems (Buddy Holly, Del Shannon, and The Monkees). The group formed in a Naperville high school, played local talent shows and teen dance parties, and hooked up with older kids (Reaction Formation) who helped them get radio gigs and put out a tape recorded by Phil Bonnet, influential recording engineer and long time friend. The band followed up with a 7" for Reaction Formation's label Nova which garnered positive reviews but they were shortly after pulled apart by the usual strains on the end of adolescent trajectories. This compilation gathers their original tape, unheard outside of the suburban Chicago teen punk scene, and pairs it with the songs from their hard-to-find 7" EP (originally pressed in 1000 copies in 1985). The b-side features basement demos of original songs recorded by the band as well some great covers which show they could rock as a punk dance band. Limited edition of 500 copies on 160 gram blue vinyl in a 20pt board jacket with full color printed inner sleeve featuring (lots of) previously unseen photos of the band and detailed liner notes. |

And so it is with 'A Last Discovery', the work of Spaniard Juan Alberto Arteche Guel and his musical co-adventurers, recorded between 1984 and 2001. After fifteen years of musical success in Spain with his band Nuestro Pequeno Mundo, Arteche was ready to experiment with new ideas, and with the purchase of a four-track reel-to-reel recorder he did so, exploring imaginary global music-worlds with a core of like-minded explorers. The group, dubbed Finis Africae by JAA after reading Umberto Eco's 'The Name Of The Rose', where the term refers to forbidden books and hidden knowledge, released seven recordings over an eighteen-year period, the best of which are compiled here. Finis Africae was part of the "new wave" of Spanish music which gradually emerged after the end of the Francoist regime. Using modern electric instruments and traditional acoustic instruments from many cultures blended together via studio alchemy, a magic which grew even stronger with the acquisition of a sixteen-track recorder after their second release, Finis Africae created an outward-looking musical multiverse, an unclassifiable amalgam encompassing elements of folk traditions from all over the world, skillfully and lovingly shaped into an inclusive pan-global whole. Deeply influenced by African music, the group's reverberant, organic minimal funk will appeal to DJs as well as all who yearn for the loving warmth that comes with the embrace of global possibilities. CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC - THE SATANIC SINGLES SERIES, VOL. 1
Instrumental post-doom quartet Clouds Taste Satanic are back with a series of four 7" singles. Entitled 'The Satanic Singles Series', each single's A side and B side will be covers of tunes that have had a profound influence on the band, but are not necessarily originating from the metal/doom genres. Volume 1 features 'Funeral For A Friend' (yes, the Elton John song) b/w 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' (better known as the theme from the movie '2001: A Space Odyssey'). Without a doubt these covers will be heavier than the originals, but not necessarily doomier. Still fully instrumental, but with songs well under the 20 minute mark, these songs make for a somewhat different CTS listening experience. Like their last several releases, the songs included in 'The Satanic Singles Series' were engineered and mixed by Ben Rice at Degraw Sound in Brooklyn and mastered by Alan Douches (High On Fire, Converge, Mastodon) at West West Side Music. 'The Satanic Singles Series' art are original pieces by Alexandre Goulet, whose graphic design work has graced numerous metal records including every album by Dopethrone. Limited to 200 copies on white with red splatter vinyl, but only few available here, so first come, first served. |

Known for its dynamic sound that blends towering riff cosmos with magnetic psychedelic rock, BLACK PYRAMID has been turning heads in the underground music world since its formation in late 2007; the response to its initial demo and debut 7" was such that the band's name spread even faster than its music. The group's instantly agreeable bang and spectacular live shows has garnered the trio an army of loyal enthusiasts. BLACK PYRAMID's thunderous tone, fire-eating licks, lyrical bent and single-minded devotion to music has enabled the trio to share the stage with a variety of like-minded heavy rock acts - from Electric Wizard to Black Mountain - and have pegged the unit as a "band to watch". Heavier and more atmospheric than the band's debut, Black Pyramid II contains BLACK PYRAMID's most ambitious material to date; a fact especially underlined by the epic, 15 minute long closing track "Into The Dawn." When writing the album, the band drew inspiration from "Lovecraft, Robert E Howard, Edison's second book "Mistress Of Mistresses" and both Norse and Indian mythology", while a big influence as far as source material was Grant Morrison's "The Invisibles", the popular comic book series with a plot that follows (more or less) a single cell of "The Invisible College", a secret organization "battling against physical and psychic oppression using time travel, magic, meditation and violence." There was never anyone like Maria Monti - and this album is a true testament to her genius! 'Il Bestiario' might be best understood next to albums by artists like Brigitte Fontaine, Scott Walker, and Catherine Ribeiro, all of whom began their careers within the saccharine confines of popular music, before embarking on some of the most revolutionary recordings of the era. It enlisted the radical poet Aldo Braibanti (a man defined "the lone true Italian genius" by another bona fide mastermind, actor Carmelo Bene) as its lyricist, features the arrangements and synthesizer contributions of avant-garde composer and Musica Elettronica Viva member Alvin Curran, as well as entries on saxophone by Roberto Laneri of Prima Materia fame, and free jazz legend Steve Lacy. The line up alone, sets a remarkable and historic stage. |
