The first remarkable trait of Lazy Smoke's sound is the lead vocals similarity to John Lennon. Upon digging just a little deeper below the surface, we instead find a darker tone and a patient, eerie feeling resonating through the songs. While bands like The Beatles and Love were singing about love, lament and hallucinated travel experiences, the songs on 'Corridor Of Faces' get sincerely dark right away. Even the seemingly-light teenage love-themed 'Sarah Saturday' shares an undercurrent of on-the-edge uncertainty. It's this undercurrent that calls to mind comparisons to 'Forever Changes' era Love. All-girl group accompanied by their instructor on the acoustic guitar, recalling Guinean folk and early Ali Farka Touré. Troupe École Tudu takes their name from a small neighborhood of Agadez, Niger. In 1985, the city hosted a musical competition between various schools. École Tudu, lacking a choir, sought out a young Tuareg guitarist Kader "Barmo" Balla to create a new style of music. The guitar was new to Niger and Barmo was new to the guitar, having only played for a few years. His notes were minimal and stripped down melodies mirroring the vocals, a technique common in Malian and Guinean folk music. To make something uniquely Saharan, they modeled their percussion on the tende, the traditional Tuareg goatskin drum and rhythm. Their debut composition titled 'Oyiwane' ('Greetings to Everyone') won first prize at the competition and garnered the attention of the Niger state. The following year they were invited into the studio to record an album, released on the small boutique label Hasada (known for their seminal work with Mamman Sani Abdoulaye). The compositions mixed traditional folksongs with original creations, but the lyrical content was political. At a time of massive rural migration, drought, and exodus, their songs were a message to the modern nomads, emphasizing traditional culture while stressing the importance of education, particularly for young women. In the early 1980s, Ahmed Malek, already in his 50s, discovered synthesizers and electronic music. Flako (a connoisseur of early electronic music) compiled and co-produced this LP from two hours of rough recordings. The result sounds as if Mr. Malek finished this project himself, before his death in 2008. Washed out of the recording business by the age of 30, Jones and her then-husband/manager James Hazley relocated to Tampa to work the hotel circuit and figure out what -if anything- was next. Following a chance encounter with Blair Mooney, Jones was invited to workshop a few stray originals at his Studio 70 compound in 1972. "He seemed to believe in me more than I did at the time," Jones remembered of the Tampa studio impresario. Jones signed with Columbia a few years later and hightailed it out of The Big Guava, leaving two sides of country-politan soul on the shelf to be forgotten about.
