LP-reissue of a highly rated album from 1975. In a fair and reasonable world Roland Haynes would have compelled more attention than he did when his jazz-funk record 'Second Wave' appeared on Black Jazz. Not to say the keyboardist was totally neglected back then but he and other plugged-in pianists of his stylistic inclination (such as label mate Doug Carn, Hampton Hawes, Don Grolnick, Larry Willis, and Gordon Beck) existed in the deep shadow cast by jazzman turned jazz-funk powerhouse Herbie Hancock, whose records with the Head Hunters lit up the r&b and pop charts.

LACKSMAN, DAN - DAN LACKSMAN

LACKSMAN, DAN - DAN LACKSMAN

Lacksman already had an album ('Flamenco Moog') and a minor European hit ('Coconut') under his belt when he recorded 1973's Dan Lacksman, which is a true outlier in his catalog in that it features him on guitar (!) and voice (!!) along with his usual keyboard wizardry. As ... read more »

As purportedly the first Black-owned jazz imprint since the '20s, the Black Jazz label had its roots in the Black Power movement of the late '60s and early '70s. But not every album on the label had a social message. Kellee Patterson's 1973 album 'Maiden Voyage' was simply ... read more »

ELECTRONIC SYSTEM - TCHIP TCHIP (VOL. 3)

ELECTRONIC SYSTEM - TCHIP TCHIP (VOL. 3)

Pretty much all of Lacksman's '70s releases command a devout collector following, but none of them can measure up to the one he recorded in 1974 under the name Electronic System, 'Tchip Tchip (Vol. 3)'. While much of side one 'Tchip Tchip' presents the composer's signature ... read more »
