While the first album Dan Lacksman recorded in 1973 was an atypical singer-songwriter foray, the second album from that year -credited to his pseudonym Electronic System- featured the full flowering of his synthesizer mastery. His hit recording
'Coconut' had enabled him to buy a modular synthesizer, which offered a vastly expanded tonal palette - if you had the patience to re-wire for each sound you wanted to achieve. Which
was the perfect set-up for a studio engineer like Lacksman... the result is an album full of sonic surprises, with each track presenting multiple, unique synthesizer tones and attacks, even on such nakedly commercial moves as his cover of Ritchie Valens' 'La Bamba.' An analog synth tour de force! Yellow vinyl pressing limited to 900 copies.

ELECTRONIC SYSTEM - TCHIP TCHIP (VOL. 3)

Pretty much all of Lacksman's '70s releases command a devout collector following, but none of them can measure up to the one he recorded in 1974 under the name Electronic System, 'Tchip Tchip (Vol. 3)'. While much of side one 'Tchip Tchip' presents the composer's signature ... read more »

COVEN (USA) - BLOOD ON THE SNOW

COVEN (USA) - BLOOD ON THE SNOW

In the sure hands of Who producer Shel Talmy, this 1974 release on the Buddah label presents a much milder, even, dare we say, benevolent version of the band that launched the whole genre of Satanic rock. Part of this was no doubt due to Coven's having gotten a taste of ... read more »

CARN, DOUG - SPIRIT OF THE NEW LAND

HAWKINS, SCREAMIN' JAY - THE BIZARRE YEARS

This 10 track compilation captures the best tracks that Hawkins cut in the early '90s for the oh-so-appropriately-named Bizarre Records, the label founded by Frank Zappa and his manager Herb Cohen. Among the highlights are his two Tom Waits covers, 'Whistling Past The ... read more »

SOPWITH CAMEL - THE MIRACULOUS HUMP RETURNS FROM THE MOON

SOPWITH CAMEL - THE MIRACULOUS HUMP RETURNS FROM THE MOON

Sopwith Camel was the first band out of the Bay Area psychedelic scene to score a hit with 'Hello, Hello' from their self-titled 1967 album, but the group broke up within a year of the album's release, so their re-formation about five years later with largely the same ... read more »

MAN - REVELATION

MAN - REVELATION

Like most "concept" albums of the period, Man's 1969 debut release was a little short on continuity and, well, concept... but who cares when in the space of one wildly psychedelic side Revelation careened from the psychedelic pomp of 'And In The Beginning...' to ... read more »
