Pretty much all of Lacksman's '70s releases command a devout collector following, but none of them can measure up to the one he recorded in 1974 under the name Electronic System, 'Tchip
Tchip (Vol. 3)'. While much of side one 'Tchip Tchip' presents the composer's signature blend of synthesizer kitsch and
boundary-breaking creativity, ranging from the oom-pah sound of the title track to the wacky 'Spider,' almost all of side two is devoted to the 14-minute 'Sky Lab,' which sounds like it came right off an Air record recorded 25 years later, with maybe a little 'Dark Side'-era Pink Floyd thrown in. A true marvel, this track is why original copies of 'Tchip Tchip' are downright unaffordable... it's not to be missed. Orange vinyl pressing limited to 900 copies!

ELECTRONIC SYSTEM - VOL. II

While the first album Dan Lacksman recorded in 1973 was an atypical singer-songwriter foray, the second album from that year -credited to his pseudonym Electronic System- featured the full flowering of his synthesizer mastery. His hit recording 'Coconut' had enabled him to ... read more »

CARN, DOUG - SPIRIT OF THE NEW LAND

Of all the artists who recorded for the Black Jazz label, keyboardist and composer Doug Carn was the most prolific, releasing four albums for the imprint. 1972's 'Spirit Of The New Land' was his second Black Jazz release, but the first one (of two) to co-feature his wife, ... read more »

LACKSMAN, DAN - DAN LACKSMAN

LACKSMAN, DAN - DAN LACKSMAN

Lacksman already had an album ('Flamenco Moog') and a minor European hit ('Coconut') under his belt when he recorded 1973's Dan Lacksman, which is a true outlier in his catalog in that it features him on guitar (!) and voice (!!) along with his usual keyboard wizardry. As ... read more »

AWAKENING - HEAR, SENSE AND FEEL

The Awakening were the only "group" recorded by Black Jazz, for which they made two albums; those two releases happen to be among the most collectible in the label's entire catalog, which, given the value Black Jazz titles command in the open market, gives one an ... read more »

MAN - REVELATION

MAN - REVELATION

Like most "concept" albums of the period, Man's 1969 debut release was a little short on continuity and, well, concept... but who cares when in the space of one wildly psychedelic side Revelation careened from the psychedelic pomp of 'And In The Beginning...' to ... read more »

JOHNSON, RUDOLPH - SPRING RAIN

JOHNSON, RUDOLPH - SPRING RAIN

Columbus, Ohio's Rudolph Johnson drew comparisons to John Coltrane during his career; like the jazz legend in his later years, Johnson eschewed drugs or alcohol and spent his time every day either meditating and rehearsing on his horn. You can definitely hear a little bit ... read more »
