Japanese import. The Bahnar are an ethnic people in the Vietnamese central highlands. These recordings were conduced in Dak Doa, in the Gia Lai Province. Bahnar people play both knobbed gongs and flat gongs. Knobbed gongs mostly have a rhythmic function, the flat gongs are used for melody. Gong music is commonly played among the Bahnar on particular occasions such as harvesting, funerals, buffalo sacrifices, wedding ceremonies, etc.
