What we have here is a reissue of a truly exciting Afrobeat and psych-funk album from Nigeria. This self-titled work by Rock Town Express was originally released in 1977 by Awoko Records.
There was a time in the 1970s when the best band in the Nigeria was actually from Cameroon. Rock Town Express, formed out of the ashes of Wrinkar Experience by Yaoundé boys Edjo'o Jacques Racine and Ginger Forcha, hit it hard, hit it loud and hit it funky. The horror of the Biafran War weighs heavily on Rock Town Express. The guitars wail, the horns parp and the synths swirls in a maelstrom of pain and anger.

Also available: ROCK TOWN EXPRESS (CD).

KANONU, ALEKE - ALEKE

KANONU, ALEKE - ALEKE

After spending much of the '70s humping his congos around New York as a session musician, Nigerian Aleke Kanonu pulled in some favours to record an album of his own. The result was 'Aleke' (1980), a criminally obscure Afrobeat/funk/jazz masterpiece featuring Buddy Williams ... read more »

SOLLO, JAKE - COMING HOME

In 1977 Jake Sollo returned to Nigeria to record his first solo album 'Coming Home'. His long-term band The Funkees had imploded in London and his big break with the Afro super band Osibisa was cut short when he went on strike with Kiki Gyan and promptly got sacked. 'Coming ... read more »

PINO, GERALDO -& THE HEARTBEATS- - LET'S HAVE A PARTY

Repress! This classic 1974 Afro-funk delivery (originally on EMI Nigeria) gets a welcome reissue. It's no exaggeration to say that Geraldo Pino and his band the Heartbeats kickstarted the whole soul/funk/Afrobeat scene in West Africa. Mixing highlife, funk and jazz, and ... read more »

BLO - PHASE IV

BLO - PHASE IV

'Phase IV' is BLO at the height of their not inconsiderable powers. Buzzing after a hugely successful tour of Denmark and Norway, the Afro funk trio returned to London in 1975 and headed straight into the Orange Studios to get the magic down on tape. Rightly regarded as the ... read more »

DANDY, TREVOR - DON'T CRY LITTLE TREE

DANDY, TREVOR - DON'T CRY LITTLE TREE

A gentle album full of consoling tunes, more or less in the vein of Cat Stevens' 'Morning Has Broken', but with a bit more soul (although this association might be caused by the insistent use of piano on this record). This ultra-rare pearl of funky gospel music was the ... read more »

ARIGO, ROBO -& HIS KONASTONE MAJESTY- - SEXY THING

As a founding member of Pogo Ltd, Robo Arigo played bass, guitar and organ on both of that band's albums. And on his own 'Sexy Thing' he even played the cowbell. However, listening to this record it's pretty clear that playing bass is where Robo's heart really was. ... read more »
