Maurizio 'Angus' Bidoli's brilliant 'Diary Of Dreams' was issued in 1998 as a very limited CD only releasegiven to friends and colleagues. It has never been reissued, and therefore this is its first ever appearance on vinyl and official CD. Angus is a native of Rome, and has played guitar with many bands, most notably the Italian metal outfit Fingernails. However, his love for the trippier, Hendrix-inspired psychjamming has manifested itself in several solo projects, and this is a great example of that. Angus plays all the instruments on this outing, and it's his wonderful guitar playing that comes to the fore. Blue Matter are genuinely thrilled to be able to make this great album available for the first time in 25 years.

BARBICAN ESTATE - BARBICAN CITY OF TOKYO
A fabulous mini LP from London based, Japanese psych band Barbican Estate. Four beguiling tracks of atmospheric, occasionally acid folk flavoured, melodic freakout shifts, taking in tips of the hat to Popol Vuh (check Miri's beautiful vox on 'Angel'), Amon Düül and fellow countrymen Acid Mothers Temple and Kikagaku Moyo amongst others. Formed in 2019, this three-piece consists of Kazuki Toneri (guitar, sitar), Miri (bass, flute, vocals), and Koh Hamada (drums, percussion). Each member is well-versed in music, film, and various other arts, drawing inspiration not only from experimental, psychedelic rock, and noise music but also from art across the world, both past and present. Their music weaves solid, architectural elements with destruction into a dark and gloomy soundscape, is often described as "dark psychedelic." They released their first album, 'Way Down East,' in 2021. In 2022, they relocated to London, where they performed on UK tours and at festivals. Having already played nearly 50 live shows, they are gaining attention in the local scene. Their EP 'Viscum' was released in June 2024. 'Barbican City Of Tokyo' is a compilation of tunes previously consigned to digital release only that label head Dom had free rein to assemble an EP from, which luckily the band wholeheartedly agreed upon! ...and all four tracks appear on vinyl here for the first time. This release hopefully cements a growing interest in the band's fabulous music, and early reviews of both the LP here and their live shows are overwhelmingly positive. Limited to 100 copies, so be fast!

'The Long Stuff' was originally released in 2002 as a limited edition CD. There were just 110 copies pressed and sold to the members of the then online 'Bevis Frond Community.' Since then it has never been reissued in any format. The album was a collection of unreleased tracks from Nick Saloman's archive, but what tied this lot together was that all of the tracks (bar one) were rather lengthy. When assembling this album for a double vinyl release, it required some extra music to fill four sides of vinyl. So what you have here are two sides taken from the original CD and a further two sides of previously unheard epics. These tracks were recorded between 1995 and 2020, and feature songs performed by Nick Saloman alone, and others with a full band. Some are home demos, while some are studio recordings. There's also one mammoth live recording. Other musicians featured are Adrian Shaw, Andy Ward, Paul Simmons and Dave Pearce. So to all those who don't go for long, self-indulgent workouts, you're not going to like this album. But for those who do... WOW! Limited to 1000 copies.

Formed in Blackpool in the late '60s, Heavy Rain was a "heavy progressive blues" band who shared stage with big names like Hawkwind, Pink Fairies or Caravan. On green vinyl. The Lost Stoned Pandas were born from a conversation between Welsh spacerockers Sendelica's Pete Bingham and writer/musician Kris Needs during the recording of the 2019 Sendelica/The Orb/Secret Knowledge collaboration EP 'Windmill', with the name coming from a very surreal GIF of cavorting pandas. One thing led to another and a cupboard-full of pandas convened at Mwnci studios in sunny West Wales in July 2019 for a rather magical couple of days of drinking, eating and recording. In attendance with Panda Pete was Panda Paul: violin (ex-Curved Air), Panda Chris: electronics (ex-Space Ritual), Panda Jack: drums (Sendelica), Panda Kate: cello and Panda Glenda: bass (Sendelica). Autumn/winter saw the recordings being dissected, manipulated and re-assembled by Panda Colin, Panda Marc (Astralasia) and Panda Pete. The track titles are probably a reflection of just how lost and stoned this particular 'embarrassment' of pandas were (apparently, that is the correct collective noun for a bunch of them). "The sound gushes, flows, winds like a cosmic rattlesnake and occasionally sprouts a rhino's todger." ~Kris Needs (Electronic Sounds Magazine). From ambient bliss through ethnic rhythms to spacerock, The Lost Stoned Pandas are out there, somewhere.

The playful band name was inspired by Popol Vuh, and combines the names of krautrock producer Conny Plank and bassist Mike Watt. Mahood made several low key albums on various formats for obscure underground labels, and played occasional solo guitar gigs around the West Coast. Full of swirling, abstract guitar-based instrumentals, 'Corridors' furthers the themes of social and ecological breakdown that he explored on 2021's 'Future Times.'

Pip Proud, sui generis, could be considered an Australian
outsider, with his untutored and uninhibited singing style, his
primal guitar playing, his resolutely personal vision captured on recordings from 1967 to the early '70s - except that, unlike most outsiders, he was loved and accepted, with two of his three album releases on a major label, with frequent television appearances and coverage in music magazines. Heralded in his native land though he was, he maintained a low profile from the early '70s, never made an impact overseas, and his recordings have been difficult to access. This collection has been selected by Proud's biographer David Nichols and will engender a new appreciation of Proud's music. Considered by some as a sort of Antipodean Syd Barrett, listeners will hear that Pip was clearing his own private and primal path, more poet than pop star, despite the media attention. Other than one Velvets-style band track, all songs here feature Pip solo, some
with appealingly primitive overdubs. Fans of ramshackle oddball
weirdo portastudio lofi bedroom pop of the '80s, '90s and beyond, whether of the NZ, UK or US varieties, will find a precursor here. 'A Fraying Space' also features liner notes by David Nichols as well as Proud's lyrics.

These 2 evergreen albums, essential for savvy collectors of Scandinavian psych/prog, showcase the smooth progression towards Kaipa's sonic multiverse, bordering on the porous dividing line between psychedelia (with a Made in Sweden pedigree) and European progressive, and driven by Hans Lundin's ferocious organplaying that alternates between swirling ultra-groovy psychedelia and imposing kraut-ish segments. Black vinyl version. After a long hiatus, Soft Hearted Scientists returned in 2023 with their most ambitious album yet, packed with psych pop singles and longer sound journeys such as 'Waltz Of The Weekend,' 'Anemone Song' and 'Lost Mariners.' And now it's time for the album to make its first appearance on vinyl, courtesy of Fruits de Mer Records. There have been glowing reviews of the CD album, but one comment summed up the progress the album represents for the band in simple terms: "The pop songs have got poppier, and the weird songs have got weirder." Producer Frank Naughton came into his own at the mixing stage and helped to graft newly written sections into some songs which gave them more depth. 'Rode My Bike' was one such song, and the middle section of that then took on a life of its own to become a standalone track called 'Gadzooks!,' probably the most over-the-top song they have ever released, tipping its hat to the Butthole Surfers' cover version of 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' and James Bond themes along the way. 'Who Loves The Moon?' grew from a few chords and a repeated refrain of about 2 minutes into an 8 minute multi- sectioned trip; similarly, 'Lost Mariners' grew from a short mantra into an 11 minute ghost story. The album finished with obsessive attention to detail in 2023 was vastly superior to the album band leader Nathan Hall and his fellow members tentatively started in 2019. And now Fruits de Mer Records are more than a bit pleased to be releasing 'Waltz Of The Weekend' on vinyl - SIX sides of it (we try not to do things by halves). In addition to the 12 tracks from the 75 minute CD edition, side five of the vinyl set includes three radical remixes of the songs 'Rode My Bike,' 'What Grows Inside The Garden' and 'The Sea Anemone Song' by producer Frank Naughton, while the final side contains a sidelong remix/remake of elements of the album by Frank who ripped the songs to bits with glee, free from Nathan Hall's album mix obsessiveness, and remade them as he wished without inhibition - what a trip.

Don Howland (Gibson Bros, Bassholes, Burning Bus) and Cheater Slicks have finally collaborated on a joint musical project. Straight-forward jangle guitars lay the foundation for the melodies to rise and shine. What we have here is nothing less than two great garage psych-pop gems!

Zakary Thaks, youthful pride of Corpus Christi, could quite easily take the prize as the most precious and forward-thinking of all texas 1960's garage bands, save for the admittedly more seasoned 13th Floor Elevators. The evidence is plain for all to hear on 'A Passage To India.' EM Forster inspired the title, the Yardbirds inspired the arrangement, but the Thaks lent their own youthful impetuosity to this remarkable blend of wide-eyed mysticism and teenaged nervous tension. It makes its debut on 45RPM vinyl here, as does 'It's The End,' an obscure original from the band's early repertoire that superficially channels the Kinks but otherwise 100% Thaks sound: dynamic rhythm section, guitars both precise and flagrant, and a superbly poised vocal. Play loud and raise a glass to these Gulf Coast teens, the likes of whom rock'n'roll will probably never see or hear again. Recorded 1st November (Side A) and 25th September, 1966 (Side B) at ACA-Gold Star Studios, Houston, Texas.

The Sparkles were associated with the garage-band and psychedelic rock scene of 1960s Texas, as epitomized by their classic underground hit 'No Friend Of Mine'. The line-up changed few times before 1962, and Stanley Smith finally recruit Harold "Lucky" Floyd (drums and vocals), Donnie Roberts (guitar) and Bobby Smith (bass). Their first recording was the single 'U.T.' under the small label Caron. This third incarnation proved a great hit among the clubs of West Texas, notably the Music Box and The Village Swinger. Indeed, in 2000, local legend Joe Ely described them as the "city's best rock'n'roll band" in the history of the Lubbock music scene published by Texas Monthly. Interestingly, The Sparkles boasted a pair of drummers, with one, the flamboyant Harold Floyd, also
lending his voice to their performances. 1966 would constitute a turning point for The Sparkles. Larry Parks -drummer for Roy Orbison, turned producer in Nashville, Tennessee- invited them to sign with Hickory Records, the historic music label founded
by Roy Acuff and Fred Rose in 1954. The band came up with 'The Hip', which proved an immediate hit in Austin and extremely popular within the fraternity scene at the University of Texas. On a roll, The Sparkles then recorded 'Something You Said' followed by 'Jack And The Beanstalk'. In 1967, The Sparkles, already a decade old, recorded their chef-d'oeuvre 'No Friend Of Mine', with Nunn's raging guitar riffs and Floyd's remarkably tense vocals. This fiery tour de force would be consecrated by its inclusion on the first CD set of the legendary compilation 'Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968'. Following their final single, 'Hipsville 29 B.C.', for Hickory Records, The Sparkles once again entered rocky waters, with Nunn and Holt finally deciding to throw in the towel in 1968. Floyd, Smith and Marriot immediately set sail for California, along the way renaming their group The Pearly Gate. This brief interlude would include a handful of appearances on the ABC sitcom 'Judd, For The Defense'. Legend has it, they were also scheduled to perform before Bobby Kennedy the evening of his tragic
assassination on June 5th 1968... Returning to Texas, Floyd, Smith and Marriot resurrected The Sparkles, bringing into the fold Steve Weisberg, future guitarist for John Denver. But Floyd's departure in 1975 for California to join Red Wilder Blue spelled the end of this group's 15-year musical odyssey, a tumultuous journey typical of such modest rock'n'roll heroes posthumously crowned by multiple thematic compilations. However, the one you're now holding constitutes the very first anthology dedicated to these incredible Texans.

Following the 'Voices Super Sound' compilation, El Vidocq wanted to continue to explore vocals, vocal harmonies and choirs... a doo wop theme, or gospel, or even choirs? Ultimately it has become a bit of all that, always with the idea of making a great record that is good to listen to from start to finish. Here we rediscover well-known groups like The Turbans, The Five Keys, Tiny Topsy & The Charms, but also many having only made one single such as acts like The Chanteurs, Avalons, The Lidos, Mad Lads and The Moon Stones. Some sang with religious convictions, like Evelyn Freeman; others had other musical directions like The Visions and The Paramours. But all have in common a lot of generosity in their songs and also a lot of "boom boom" of "wop wop" of "ouh ouuuhhh."

Altar De Fey originated in San Francisco in the early 1980's as part of the emerging musical form that would come to be known as deathrock. Out of the Zeitgeist flash of '70s punkrock the new sound took the darkest elements of the counter culture into ever deeper, gloomier and more mature territory. Performing at legendary San Francisco venues Mabuhay Gardens, Graffiti, The Nightbreak and the rest billed with Christian Death, 45 Grave, and all the fellow architects of West Coast post punk. The original incarnation passed through a rotating cast of characters centered strongly by the vision and experimental guitar of founding member Kent Cates. Eschewing the conventional chord progression/solo form entirely Cates's guitar spins strands of melody and rhythm, tone and texture in a style that to this day is all his own. The mood was perfected with the innovative tribal drumming of Aleph Kali and Butch Mason's haunted confrontational vocals. Though the band had a strong base of support, no original recordings were ever released and the young members carried on into new musical endeavors. By 1988 ADF disbanded. Years upon years passed yet the name was never completely forgotten. As goth punk culture persisted, grew and developed over time the band began to take on a kind of legendary hue among fans in the know; The lost mysterious phenomenon of Altar De Fey. There was a kind of poetry to it. Finally in 2011, when asked if they would play a reunion for a festival in San Francisco Kent and Aleph surprised everyone by answering yes. Reforming originally as a 2 piece with a drum machine Kent on guitar and Aleph on vocals to an enthusiastic reception, the duo enjoyed it so much they decided to continue the momentum and quickly added Skot Brown on bass, Aleph switched over to live drums, and Jake Hout was added on vocals. The new line up debuted in April of 2012 and has continued regularly performing songs from the original '80s catalogue and steadily adding new material ever since. A new generation of underground deathrock music is growing across the world, in closer, more direct communication than ever before, and interest in the band has quickly escalated. This unique compilation brings you 11 original ADF songs recorded between 1984-1986 (demos, rehearsal records, live records). This release shines a light into the dark and yet strangely uplifting world of Inryo-fuen's early 80s wonderland. It's a surreal, adventurously analogue, positively negative realm of freedom. Following the release of Inryo-fuen's enigmatic 'Ho-Aku', 'Early Years 1980-82' collects the band's earliest recordings, originally released on flexi and vinyl, here re-edited, re-mixed and remastered. With enlightening notes by band member Jun Harada providing historical background and recording information, stressing their love of improvisation and their ongoing quest for liberation, this is a landmark release, offering a glimpse into a hitherto inaccessible netherworld of the Tokyo/Yokohama post-punk underground. The music here, all improvised, with many of the pieces recorded live, have an edge-of-the-world electricity, informed by the group's fascination with the Surrealist idea of Automatic Writing. The launch point is a brutalist, knuckle-dragging Conrad/Faust thug-riff featuring the hectoring rants of a stage-invading student activist, dramatically melded with the music by the sound engineer. From there we traverse manifold realms, variously propulsive and static, dense and pointillistic, threatening and whimsical, opaque and translucent. Inryo-fuen's searching use of the basic rock instrumentation of drums, bass and guitar is augmented with keyboards and, on one piece, acoustic instrumentation. No

Bass Communion is the experimental/ambient project of Porcupine
Tree's Steven Wilson. Whilst still rippled with the same shades
of light and dark that can be found throughout all of Bass
Communion's work, 'The Itself Of Itself' reveals a fascination
with analogue sounds and, more importantly perhaps, unwanted
analogue artefacts s.a. tape hiss, wow and flutter, static
noise and sonic break-up, taking the music into a space at once
different yet familiar. This deluxe DOUBLE-LP edition comes with a gatefold sleeve, a 24-page booklet and an obi.

Clan Caimán returns to EM Records for their second album, continuing the instinctive evolution of their music: a wordless, timeless, gently pulsing and sweetly melodic soundworld, based on composer Emilio Haro's vision of a band playing the music of an imaginary undiscovered ethnic group. Woven together by Haro's self-made kalimbafón, a tuned percussion instrument, these five Argentinian musicians also use threads of lap steel, guitars, bass and percussion to knit their beyond-genre textures, seemingly ageless despite being recorded in December 2019. 'Asoma' is perfect music for imaginary voyages during travel-restricted times.

'THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION 1984-2001'. Finis Africae. Words redolent of mystery and myth, of Europe looking out to new lands, new worlds, new times. And so it is with 'A Last Discovery', the work of Spaniard Juan Alberto Arteche Guel and his musical co-adventurers, recorded between 1984 and 2001. After fifteen years of musical success in Spain with his band Nuestro Pequeno Mundo, Arteche was ready to experiment with new ideas, and with the purchase of a four-track reel-to-reel recorder he did so, exploring imaginary global music-worlds with a core of like-minded explorers. The group, dubbed Finis Africae by JAA after reading Umberto Eco's 'The Name Of The Rose', where the term refers to forbidden books and hidden knowledge, released seven recordings over an eighteen-year period, the best of which are compiled here. Finis Africae was part of the "new wave" of Spanish music which gradually emerged after the end of the Francoist regime. Using modern electric instruments and traditional acoustic instruments from many cultures blended together via studio alchemy, a magic which grew even stronger with the acquisition of a sixteen-track
recorder after their second release, Finis Africae created an
outward-looking musical multiverse, an unclassifiable amalgam
encompassing elements of folk traditions from all over the world, skillfully and lovingly shaped into an inclusive pan-global whole. Deeply influenced by African music, the group's reverberant, organic minimal funk will appeal to DJs as well as all who yearn for the loving warmth that comes with the embrace of global possibilities. Using excerpts from the original recording, which was reissued by EM Records in 2015, as well as various other sound sources, 'Three Amazonian Essays' was composed and recorded in early 2017.

Last copies of first pressing! soccer Committee has always been a consistent exercise in restraint, and offering space. And on 'Love/Lamb,' this approach has been taken to perfection. The arrangements are still minimal, with plenty of time for the tones and melodies to resonate with maximum impact. Mariska Baars still carefully selects each note, and lets the sound evolve with precise care. Her songs are definitely rooted in the folk tradition, but at the same time very 'ambient', in the true sense of the word. And still: there's a bit of a different approach here, compared with her earlier work. Tracks like 'No Turn To Harm' and 'Reaching' have a few very subtle extra layers added. 'Aride Afar' starts out as Baars' most distorted work thusfar - she even asked the help of Wouter Van Veldhoven to add a tape loop recording, and that works remarkably well: the track balances on the edge of disintigration, but it takes a master like Baars to keep it together. And then soccer Committee takes another leap in the dark: the B-side opens with 'Imagining You In The Room.' This mostly acapella song stands as Baars' longest composition thus far. Yet not a single tone is redundant, and Baars deliveres it so skillful and humble that it feels like a symphony on its own. After that: just one more track, and you're ready to re-listen the album. On 'Love/Lamb,' you can feel the unwavering focus of Baars so present that it's sheer impossible not to focus as a listener yourself. But what makes Baars so otherworldly is her gift to still make it sound comforting and reassuring rather than demanding for attention. 'Love/Lamb' is an invitation you're more than happy to accept. Vor-stellen is the experimental project of Brendan Moran, which blends fixated guitars and drums with ad-hoc electronic layers producing perforated waves of sustain which echoes off the fourth wall. Brendan has released work previously as part of avoid!avoid (their album 'Particle And Wave' was released by Flying Nun in 2016) and The Subliminals, of which Flying Nun re-released -in 2021- a vinyl edition of their highly acclaimed album 'United State.' With Vor-stellen he picks up where those other projects have left off as a foray into 'kraut' inspired compositions "which seek to transform pre-determined ideas of music into open-ended sound objects, untethered from any sense of conventional outcomes." On this, second VS record, he teams up with his Subliminal buddies once again to continue on an exploration, "folding the weird and the eerie into a dark ecology of long-sound via indefatigable environments of modulation and improvisation, creating sonic counterpoints that hinge on a reanimation of musical gestures." YPY is the solo alias of Osaka-based Koshiro Hino, who has honed his rhythmic instincts as leader of the acclaimed Japanese band goat and the sound installation/theatre project GEIST and Virginal Variations. His preoccupation with propulsion is on full display here, across five tracks of varying density and intensity, all thoroughly beat-oriented, with skeins of synthesized and sampled sound stretching to the horizon, rising from a bedrock of minimal drum machine pulses, all lovingly embraced in a cassette-borne sonic fug. The cover image and title hearken back to Hino's past, with the image obscurely referencing his yesteryear green mohawk, and the title derived from Talking Heads, but this effervescent album, though recorded using cassette technology, is not a sad tale of nostalgia, rather a look at a present/pleasant reality. Compiling a new quality tracklisting - when so many other (often excellent) compilations have already been produced - represents no small challenge. And yet our ol' pal El Vidocq has somehow pulled it off, limiting his prospecting to France, Belgium and Canada to unearth a selection of real nuggets. As usual, the convivial disc jockey has favored danse-inducing, out-of-the-ordinary tunes, while yet steering clear of the simply strange or anecdotal... This album combines rock, jerk and froggy yé-yé, with eminently cinematographic instrumentals. Certain songs are astonishingly modern, while others are simply outrageous. Gaston's reply to Nino Ferrer. The addictions of José Salcy. Cléo evoking the '60s lifestyle, and Annie Duparc the changing society. Tao settles his parental scores, while Christian Gaubert and Claude Bolling masterfully direct their ensembles, on a level with the world's greatest orchestras!
Once again, and it's no surprise, not a drop of ennui taints this fun and groovy album, packed full with talented musicians, many forgotten but here happily rediscovered.

VARIOUS - MAMBO, CHA-CHA-CHA & CALYPSO 4 (+CD)
Grouped together under one Caribbean banner, these typically Cuban melodies from the 1930s (mambo) and 1950s (cha-cha-cha), further spicened with Trinidadian tunes from 1915 onwards (calypso) bubble over to form a frothing tryptic of irresistible dance songs. First released in the States, these sunny melodies very rapidly spread around the world following the First World War... After having first explored a bouquet of female singers (Vol. 1), followed by the wild extravagance of this music (Vol. 2) and finally its links to blues (Vol. 3, El Vidocq here focuses on the impact and influences of mambo, cha-cha-cha and calypso within other regions of the world. Volume quatro: Europe! A hip-swaying road trip through Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and last but not least France. Benefitting from markedly mixed ensembles - for these countries often opened their arms to exiled musicians - the songs here spotlighted are all strongly influenced by the Caribbean while yet retaining their own national flavors.
How can you not succumb to 'La Suppa De Pichon' by Belgium's Los Merecumbes, or to the 'Cha Cha Twist' by Spain's Margarita Sierra? You're sure to Olé! the 'Torero' by the UK's very own The Southlanders, while shaking your bum to Bordeaux's Ben Y Su Tumba and his fiery 'Tequila' as audacious as the original by Chuck Rio!
