He has also made an immense cultural impact since, particularly through covers and samples from artists such as Madness and Eminem. Shuffled into the impressive surroundings of London's music theatres for the BBC, Labi Siffre effortlessly performed uncompromising and intimate versions of upcoming songs to promote his then latest work with hits and misses underlined by a rare kind of sincerity and warmth. There is no doubt that Siffre wore his heart on his sleeve, yet for someone living and performing as an openly gay black folk singer in the 1970s, his conscience was to be the very fabric of his being.
