Founded in 1981 by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, the group's fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer.
