PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE/FOLK

BELLTOWERS - TOMRROW WILL REMAIN/SUNSHINE NURSERY RHYMES (7"/HYPNOTIC BRIDGE)

Based in Orlando, Florida, The Belltowers were formed in 2004 by Paul Mutchler (formerly of garage-psych legends The Lears) on vocals and guitars, Eddie Foeller on guitars and harmonica; Marshall Huggins on vocals, bass and organ and the band's most recent addition, Bill Langbein, on drums. Influenced by folk-rock, psychedelia and power pop, the band shares a common love of The Byrds, The Who, The Beatles, The Kinks, Gene Clark, Love, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, and The Rain Parade. They employ vintage instruments (Rickenbacker, Gretsch, Epiphone, Fender, and Guild) to play their jangly, harmony-laden songs. With its Byrdsian jangle and Beatlesque "Day Tripper" vibe, 'Tomorrow Will Remain' was laid down on a '70s MCI 24-track, two-inch recorder for an authentic feel, with strings arranged by Marshall Huggins. Like the A-side, 'Sunshine Nursery Rhymes' employs classic guitars and vintage Fender amps for maximum warmth and resonance, delivering a driving Byrds-by-way-of-Tom-Petty level of rural, pop-psych euphoria.

COLOURED BALLS - LIBERATE ROCK: SINGLES AND MORE 1972-75 (2LP) (LP/JUST ADD WATER)

A double album containing sixteen tracks. This collects all six of their singles released on the Havoc and EMI labels between '72 and '74, two live tracks recorded at their legendary Sunbury '73 festival appearance, and a canceled single from their final recording session in early '75, shortly before the group split. Liner notes by Ian McFarlane. Remastered and comes with poster.

COLOURED BALLS - ROCK YOUR ARSE OFF! (LP/JUST ADD WATER)

'LIVE AT FESTIVAL HALL 10 NOV. 1972' - Stunning quality live recording documenting Coloured Balls tearing the roof off Melbourne's venerable Festival Hall - available on vinyl for the first time. Mastered from the original tape by Aztecs drummer and producer/engineer Gil Matthews. Liner notes by Ian McFarlane. Limited to 500 copies.

DR SPACE'S ALIEN PLANET TRIP - VOL. 4 (2LP/BLACK) (LP/SPACE ROCK)

'SPACE WITH BASS'- This album was born in the summer of 2019 as a number of strange synth improvisations and experiments, many with the idea to have someone record guitar on the top, but these ones were thought to be too strange or difficult to add guitar to, so they added bass. Hasse Horrigmoe (Tangle Edge) visited Dr Space and played some amazingly creative bass on these tracks and utterly transformed them. Dr Space had received the 'In Search Of Hades' Tangerine Dream box set this summer as well as had watched the Conny Plank documentary DVD. The music on this album is highly inspired by Tangerine Dream, Neu, Cluster, Eno, etc. We feel the music is highly challenging at times but also utterly unique in this world. Enjoy, open your ears and your mind to something strange and wonderful. We recommend you listen to this album in the headphones... but be careful! Limited to 180 copies on black vinyl.

LOS MUNDOS - NO HAY QUIEN SE SALVE (LP/ACID TEST)

Blazing out of Monterrey, Mexico come Los Mundos with 'No Hay Quien Se Salve', a throbbing head swirl of brutal psychedelia. Charting a course between the sumptuous, angelic melodies of The Beach Boys and the fuzz out drenched clangour of The Jesus & Mary Chain, 'No Hay Quien Se Salve' doubles down on the duo's razor-sharp riffs, mantra like vocals and heads off deep into the vanishing point. Comes on purple/green swirl vinyl. Order fast!

NUKLI - (BLACK) THERE IS ANOTHER WAY (2LP) (LP/SPACE ROCK)

The band Nukli from the UK were founded in the late '80s and released several cassette releases and only one official CD, 'Time Factory', back in 1997. While the band have been playing live all these years and released a few live recordings this is the first studio album since 1997 and the band's first ever vinyl release. The songs on this album were recorded at the Foel Studio in Wales back in 2012, so they took their time to get this finished and released but it was worth the wait! This LP features 12 mostly long tracks with a really great positive message. They also mix in some interesting samples between tracks. Overall, the tracks just flow like good aged wine, with some nice solid bass and drum grooves over which Kev Hegan plays some fantastic and cool guitar with a nice use of effects pedals at times. He also plays some keys on a few tracks and they mix in some spacey sounds here and there as well. 'Foel Funk' is a bonus track only on the vinyl, not on the CD or Bandcamp! Limited to 100 copies on black vinyl.

THEATRE DU CHENE NOIR - AURORA (LP/SOUFFLE CONTINU)

In 1972, Steve Lacy recorded 'Solo', one of the gems in his discography, in the Théâtre du Chêne Noir in Avignon. The previous year (which was also the year in which 'Aurora' appeared), the eponymous group of actors led by Gérard Gelas, took up residence in what was a 12th century chapel. The Théâtre du Chêne Noir is therefore not just the name of a space open to all kinds of artistic audacity, but also the name of the great Theatre Group which resides there. Gérard Terronès showed some flair when he published, in 1971 on Futura, the first album by Théâtre du Chêne Noir. It has to be said that the group run by Gérard Gelas was right up his street: non-conformist, eccentric, protesting, just so alive... Singing too, as we can still hear today on 'Aurora', recorded at Avignon the 22 and 23 June 1971. 'Aurora', which had been created a few weeks earlier at Ariane Mnouchkine's Théâtre du Soleil, is according to, Gelas' own words, a fantastic tale with actor musicians who play out the fabulous story of the Earth, and children who fight against terrifying bird men who fly from planet to planet to enslave the inhabitants and become the masters of the universe. It is an ambitious subject and thankfully (even more so for the album than for the play), the actors are also excellent musicians! If we can find «Chêne Noir» between Checkpoint Charlie and Chillum in the Nurse With Wound List created by Steven Stapleton and John Fothergill, 'Aurora' is closer to 'Stances à Sophie' by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and the 'Divine Comédie' by Bernard Parmegiani and François Bayle. So, we need to move forward cautiously in this landscape of recitals and songs, of mysteries and cries, where saxophones and flutes, electric guitars and percussions spring up... Could the tragic climax have been possible without music? The Théâtre du Chêne Noir replies no to the question and creates a fascinating mix of text and music without one dominating the other. Enjoy the show!

POP/ROCK/WAVE/NOISE

CASSIE (UK) - CHANGE MY IMAGE (7"/REMINDER)

Formed on the Isle of Wight in 1978 the four-piece of Nigel Hayles - guitar, Debbie Barker - lead vocals, Eric Biggs - bass and Hugh Kim Lewis on drums was originally known as Flirt before changing their name to Cassie in 1979; likely as a nod to Blondie whose songs the group favored along with the likes of The Pretender, Ramones and Eddie & The Hot Rods. Despite recording demos for Wilf Pine, the former mobbed-up co-manager for Black Sabbath, major label deals were not forthcoming. Thus Cassie issued their only single of two Barker penned, Pine-produced tracks, 'Change My Image,' backed-with 'Will You' on A.K.A. Records in 1982. Whether or not the name of the label used for the release - A.K.A. - was any reference to Pine's numerous underworld connections is unclear. What is clear, however, is the strength of the two Barker originals. 'Change My Image' is a bratty bubblegum-punk paean to future sell-out success ("Gonna kick off my jeans and start smoking fancy cigarettes!") while the furious guitar riffing on 'Will You' fortunately for today's listeners finds Cassie about three years out of step with the prevailing New Pop styles of 1982. Instantly obscure upon issue, Cassie's only record became instantly hard to find. The band would continue to perform releasing only one other track on a regional compilation before finally breaking up in 1985.

CHERYL - KILLER KISS (7"/REMINDER)

The hit of the summer of '81 that never was, is NOW! It's Cheryl with her lone single 'Killer Kiss' - an unfairly forgotten soundtrack to an endless hot-girl-summer. Whilst the charts of 40 years gone were clogged by the likes of Toyah, Shakin Stevens, and Kim Carnes, Cheryl's update to the girl group sound of the 1960s outpaces 'em all, squeezing and pleasing with pouty-shouty vocals and warnings (danger: heartbreak dead ahead) all done up and updated in a trashy/punk-y throwaway power pop style by Cheryl - aka then-eighteen-year-old London-born Cheryl Powling - bored - bounced from school, modeling and dead-end jobs until she caught the eye of former Animals manager and Barn Records boss Chas Chandler. Recorded at Stage One Studio in London and released in January 1981 on Penthouse Records (perhaps in a nod to another one of Cheryl's past employers), 'Killer Kiss' is an absolute heartbreaker's declaration of intent. As the ear-worm chorus so proudly states: Killer kiss! One kiss'll kill ya! Killer kiss! Red hot lips! Got the kiss of the killer kiss! It's a fever, fever, fever! Buffeted about with an almost QUICK-like nursery-rhyme guitar keyboard run, 'Killer Kiss' sound should have carried Cheryl out from Page 3 to the top of the charts, but the single sadly did not make it above the fold. With no future musical prospects, Cheryl packed it in. Cheryl now breeds chickens and works as a professional stained glass artist and mother of three.

COLDREAMS - MORNING RAIN/EYES (7"/CAMISOLE)

Repress! This long time sought after French post-punk/coldwave 7" finally gets an official reissue with remastered sound and artwork. An obsessive melancholia infuses the two tracks of this record, while haunting lyrics and subtle production definitely set them apart from their contemporaries. Coldreams was a French female fronted post-punk band hailing from Clermont-Ferrand.

JABATO - JABATO (7"/FAMILY SPREE)

Jabato is the project of Cesar Sanchez, bassist and composer of the power-pop band Jibaros. On this 7", he has been joined by Marta Shannon (Thee Clogs) on drums and Pepe Bermejo.

SOUND - PHYSICAL WORLD (7"/REMINDER)

"Can you hear the sound?" Adrian Borland intones urgently on 'Physical World', the title song from The Sound's very first record, a 7" EP that has been out of print for 40 years and now fetches hundreds of dollars on the collectors' market. Lovingly reissued by Reminder Records, 'Physical World' captures Adrian Borland and his newly named group at a transitional point musically. Whereas Adrian's previous group The Outsiders were informed by The Stooges (James Williamson's guitar playing especially) and the Sex Pistols, The Sound were heavily influenced by Joy Division, a band Adrian had seen live numerous times and been captivated by. The Sex Pistols' anger was aimed outwards; Joy Division's was introverted and turned in on itself. On the enemy within.

TEHOSEKOITIN - KOYHAT SYNTISET (LP/SVART)

TEHOSEKOITIN - ROCK'N ROLL (2LP) (LP/SVART)

V2A - RODARTE EP (LP/IDLE PRESS)

Few months after an unexpected CD of '90s techno/slow-goa tracks edited and compiled by Alexis Le-Tan, French label Idle Press is back with a 4 tracker from V2A, solo project of Gordon Pohl, known for his involvement into Karamika (Offen) and Musiccargo. Gordon Pohl is a former DJ in Germany's '90s techno scene. He now spends his time in his studio in Düsseldorf putting together some compositions for his neo-Kraut band Musiccargo, Karamika (with Black Merlin) and his Kunstkopf label. V2A is the first solo project in a long time.

SOUNDTRACKS/LOUNGE/CULT ETC

UMILIANI, PIERO - FATE HAD PLANNED IT SO/JUST TELL ME (7"/FOUR FLIES)

To complete the 'Orgasmo'/'Paranoia' soundtrack set, Four Flies adds two songs to the cake (both not included in the LP version). An alternate take of Lydia MacDonald's 'Fate Had Planned It So', more rhythmical and dynamic than the one used for the title's sequence, and the soul hit 'Just Tell Me', sung by Wess, and performed by his Airdales. A fantastic funk-soul stomper, perfect to dance.

UMILIANI, PIERO - A QUIET PLACE TO KILL (PARANOIA) O.S.T. (10") (10"/FOUR FLIES)

The second collaboration for director Umberto Lenzi and composer Piero Umiliani, and the second chapter of the sexy thriller Baker trilogy. 'A Quiet Place To Kill' (known in Italy as 'Paranoia') is probably one of the most sought-after scores by Umiliani, buried for far too many years, and finally recovered from the original reels. A great score finally resurfaces: from action-jazz to psychedelic feel, with the special gem of the opening titles song, the extraordinary 'You', sung by Shirley Harmer, which is one of the most moving things Umiliani has ever written. Limited to 400 copies.

MICHELINI, LUCIANO - MORTE SOSPETTA DI UNA MINORENNE O.S.T. (LP/FOUR FLIES)

First time on vinyl for this utterly top level score composed by Luciano Michelini for the slasher/crime flick directed by Sergio Margino, 'Morte Sospetta Di Una Minorenne' ('The Suspicious Death Of A Minor'), and recorded in 1975 at Ortophonic Studio in Rome. The main theme echoes certain passages from Goblin's 'Deep Red' - recognizable by the use of the same church organ played a few months earlier by Claudio Simonetti's hands for Dario Argento's masterpiece, whilst the entire soundtrack sounds somehow "Goblinesque", thanks to the prog-rock and funk action themes used for chases, murders, and suspense scenes. Remastered from the original reels preserved in the C.A.M. archives, this vinyl edition features new LP editing, and is housed in a hard tip-on sleeve with a stunning artwork designed by Luke Insect.

UMILIANI, PIERO - PARANOIA (ORGASMO) O.S.T. (LP/FOUR FLIES)

The missing soundtrack by Piero Umiliani par excellence, considered by many to be lost, is finally fully recovered on a prestigious LP edition. 'Paranoia' (known in Italy as 'Orgasmo') is the first chapter of the famous giallo trilogy that Italian cult director Umberto Lenzi filmed starring former "Baby Doll" Carroll Baker. The score is an actual gem of grace and elegance - a manifesto of seduction that perfectly capture the film's morbid side, psych(edel)ic deliriums, and pop ambiance. Featuring sublime, mysterious vocals by Alessandro Alessandroni, Giulia De Mutiis and Lydia MacDonald. Another piece of Umiliani's outstanding music legacy is finally now ready to shine again!
