PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE/FOLK

FLOWER MACHINE - THROUGH A LONDON WINDOW/ONE IN A MILLION (7"/HYPNOTIC BRIDGE)

Starting with their 2004 debut album 'Chalk Dust Dream Of The Tea Cozy Mitten Company,' The Flower Machine has been one of the longest-running yet most obscure bands in the Los Angeles psych scene. Led by Dutch-American singer and guitarist Peter Quinnell, the band has consistently focused on crafting dense, heavily-overdubbed psych-pop songs, delivered through an intermittent series of loud and chaotic performances over the years in the LA club scene. Strongly influenced by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, The Outsiders, and Kevin Ayers, The Flower Machine's idiosyncratic take on psychedelia was shaped during Peter's formative years in Amsterdam, a city where the spirit of 1967 in many ways never ended. Currently based in San Luis Obispo, California, The Flower Machine recorded the basic tracks for their Hypnotic Bridge single in a cavernous warehouse near the airport, using an 8-track machine. The tapes were then taken to a studio in the leafy realm of Cambria, where they added sitar, flute, organ, backwards guitars and subtle layers of mellotron cello to complete the A-side, 'Through A London Window,' which was inspired in part by Antonioni's 1966 cinematic masterpiece 'Blow Up.' 'One In A Million,' perhaps the most obscure item in the Pink Floyd cannon, makes its vinyl debut on the B-side. Surviving only on a murky audience tape from a gig in Copenhagen in September, 1967, the song is thought to be a joint composition between Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. It even may have been an early version of the rumored 'She Was A Millionaire' single The Pink Floyd were working on to follow up 'See Emily Play.' Peter spent ages decoding its lyrics, enabling us to present here, for the first time ever, a fully realized version of a song that many consider to be one of the last holy relics of 1967. Peter employs a black-and-white Danelectro 59 for the guitar parts, while Matt plays the menacing, Wright-influenced organ. Artwork by Yu Maeda.

BALSTER, FRIEND & LLOYD - THE FFG SESSIONS (+CD) (LP/TRAMP (UK))

The people on this album also recorded the iconic 1974 album 'Dreaming Again' by Stonefield Tramp. "During the years 2005-2007, when Rob was working on his 'reunion' album with Stonefield Tramp, and as hard as we tried (and we really did pull out all the stops!), we failed to locate fellow band member Dave Lloyd. However, in 2017, I received an email from Dave who had finally, after some 40 odd years, Googled Stonefield Tramp and discovered my website. It was lovely to be back in touch with him again, and a very warmly received reunion took place during that Summer at my local watering hole, The Three Horseshoes pub, in the village of Norton, just outside Letchworth. Rob even flew in from the U.S.A. for this very special event! As I was still in the process of recovering from my, fairly recent, motor bike crash, and feared that I would never be able to play my guitar again, I asked Dave if he would like to collaborate with me as a song writer, his music and my lyrics? He gladly accepted the offer and this album is the first fruit of our labours, with enough spare songs written for at least two more in the near future! It has to be clearly stated that Dave's expertise, on the instrument guitar, is several notches above my humble aspirations. It is always good to raise the bar a little!" ~Terry Friend - Letchworth, Hertfordshire, England, November 2019.

CEGVERA - THE SIXTH GLARE (LP/STOLEN BODY)

Dark psychedelia, mesmerising doomy soundscapes, obscured and enlightening riffs are just few components of what to expect from Cegvera's album 'The Sixth Glare'. Following on from their now sold out split release with Vinnum Sabbathi, 'The Good Earth Is Dying', Cegvera have become a duo - Gerardo Arias (guitar) and Matt Neicho (drums).

DIMMA - I MORGON BORJAR ALLT OM (LP/TRANSSUBSTANS)

Dimma is back! Again they combine heavy riffs, high voltage rock'n roll and some psychedelic sounds of the '60s. All vocals are sung in their mother tongue, which makes this energetic effort a perfect fit for any fan of Abramis Brama, November and Magnolia.

PEABODY CO. - PEABODY CO. (LP/OUT-SIDER)

Famous for their freaked out ride down 'Tobbaco Road' (included on the now legendary 'A Fistful Of Fuzz' comp), Peabody Co. were a mysterious US band who left behind a set of 10" acetates, collected here for the first time. Late '60s acid-punk/garage-psych, featuring seven self-penned songs plus three terrific cover versions of 'I Can't Explain' (The Who), 'Let's Live For Today' (Rokes/Grass Roots) and the aforementioned 'Tobbaco Road' (based on the Blues Magoos cover but including an extended crazed theremin/drum freak out!). Recommended if you like The Bachs, Blues Magoos, Mystery Meat and the like... Carefully remastered sound by Tim Warren. Artwork with generic sleeve design, as the ones used by vanity/customs labels like Century in the '60s-'70s.

SAND - VIBRATING CLOUD (LP/ROTORELIEF)

Over 5 decades Sand is a timeless narrative machine full of pictures and scenarios, each title a unique piece that stands alone. The band took off with 'Golem', the analogue primitive robot that became independent and out of control. A hybrid creature related to Enki Bilal's mutants, androids, animal humans or automatons. This is their collaboration with artwork by Bilal. Contains 16 tracks of which 6 are remakes from the '70s. Comes on 200 gram vinyl.

SPHAEROS - POSSESSION (LP/PAN EUROPEAN RECORDING)

Sphaèros, leader of the group Aqua Nebula Oscillator, returns with a new total project. David Sphaèros: "After 30 years spent creating in multiple media (sculpture, retinal visualization, travels, music, poetry), I've decided to mix everything into one protean monster: Sphaèros' 'Possession'. I've created seven music pieces and seven films, born from spheres, without a preconceived form, created spontaneously like automatic writing, to let the spirits speak. This work is made up of a superposition of successive layers of sound, visions, poetry, and colors. When linked together, these elements create a unique living kaleidoscopic universe that blends seeing, hearing, and spiritual thinking into the Beyond and its parallel worlds. To create this piece, I spent three years in my inner world, living an almost monastic life in order to find the very essence of creation, and to share my vision of magic and reality as openly as possible, without any concession."

THIS IS NOWHERE - GRIM POP (LP/DOOM MOOD)

This is Nowhere is a five piece musical group from Salonica, Greece, lost in a no man's land among noise, blues, experimental and psych rock. In January 2014 their first full length LP 'Turn On/Tune Down/Drop D' was released by the legendary Nasoni label from Berlin. Their sound has evolved a bit since then, incorporating elements of noise rock, dub and shoegaze through delays, bass and more bass... The band's second album 'Music To Relapse By', featuring new drummer Captain Tzek, was released in 2016, also by Nasoni. The same year, their live reproduction of The Velvet Underground's 'White Light/White Heat' was released by Lotus Releases and Melotron Recordings for Record Store Day 2016. Meanwhile, the group shared the stage with acts like White Hills, Moon Duo, Psychic Ills, the Mark Lanegan band, Wooden Shjips and more. At the end of the decade, moving towards colder soundscapes, the band started working on their third album, 'Grim Pop'. With the addition of synths and theremin by new member Eva Duru, the band mixed their acid rock with dance rhythms, minimal basslines and pop elements.

A real creeper of an album featuring Aaron Baker on vocals and most instruments. This collection of songs is an absolute masterpiece, expertly combining psych rock, doom metal, stoner rock, and progressive rock. A deep listen for a spooky, creepy evening! Limited to 200 copies.

GARAGE/BEAT/SURF/ROCK’N’ROLL

LES GRYS-GRYS - MILK COW BLUES/SO LONG (7"/STATE)

Legendary French garage/R&B deviants Les Grys-Grys follow up their debut LP from 2019 with 2 more kick-ass tracks, recently laid down at State's custom-built North Down Sound 8-track recording facility. They've finally committed their 'signature' tune 'Milk Cow Blues' to tape, with an aggressive delivery to match their live performance. Original flipside 'So Long' is equally monstrous, with a powerful swing and some stinging guitar. Both sides appear in dedicated mono mixes, as all good 45s should!

SUBCULTURE - BREAK ME FREE/THINK AGAIN (7"/HEAVY SOUL)

Back in December of 2019 the band went into the studio to start the recording process ready for the new year ahead and now Heavy Soul! is very pleased to tell you that 'Break Me Free', the fourth single and first release of 2020 is available NOW!!! Comes on red vinyl.

ROMSKIP - DAGENS UNGDOM (12"/BACK TO BEAT)

Romskip (Spaceship) is a young band from Bergen, Norway. Formed in 2016, they released their first 7" in 2018 and a 4 song 12" EP in June 2019. 'Dagens Ungdom' ('Kids Today') is their third release, also a 4 song 12" EP. Romskip takes inspiration from classic garage, punk and psychedelia bands, as well as current indie and psych, but their style of music is uniquely their own. Also noteworthy are singer Adem Kollen's strong lyrics in Norwegian: a mix of classic rock themes like love, hate, alienation, intoxication and youthful rebellion, performed with an inventive use of dialect and street slang that makes them difficult to translate. 'Dagens Ungdom' has more of everything: more punk, more garage, more psych, with a recording that hints at the wild energy of their live shows. Download card included.

POP/ROCK/WAVE/NOISE

BUVETTE - 4EVER (LP/PAN EUROPEAN RECORDING)

Collaborating with producer Apollo Noir gave Swiss musician Buvette a new sound. Their histories are similar: starting out as drummers in dingy basements and empirically building their musical culture, one by the Lake Geneva, the other in the Auvergne region. And mostly, they share a desire to contemplate time, freely and dreamily. When you make do without computerized automations, even mistakes become beautiful. They let themselves go and explored every possibility, bonded by a brotherly trust. A dialogue then took place between different rhythms, formats, moods, and a balance was found between pop songs and cosmic synthesis. The frame is wide open, its resolution unknown.

PUNK/HARDCORE

ALGARA - ENAMORADOS DEL CONTROL TOTAL (7"/LA VIDA ES UN MUS)

Home recorded in a squat in Barcelona, this EP offers four slices of desolate sounding, under-produced post-punk for fans of early Crisis and Joy Division.

FOC - LA FERA FEROTGE (LP/LA VIDA ES UN MUS)

What we have here is an album of absolutely reckless and compressed hc punk rock, full of jumps in register and micro-shifts in timing. Hailing from Barcelona, Foc pretty much sounds like Motörhead played at 78rpm with the vocal phrasing of the Peggio Punx or Indigesti!

MURO/ORDEN MUNDIAL - SONIDO DE LA NEGACION (LP/LA VIDA ES UN MUS)

Two hc/punk band share a 12-inch LP! Muro is based in Bogota, Colombia and Orden Mundial hails from Mallorca, Spain.

PALESTINE, CHARLEMAGNE -& JOHN KORMERLING- - (FAKE FUR) FFROGGSSICHORDDD (2LP) (LP/STAALPLAAT)

A famous English conductor said that the harpsichord sounded like "two skeletons copulating on a tin roof". An instrument that was once the basis of every orchestra and chamber ensemble was long ago replaced by the stronger and, for some, sweeter sounding piano. Now the harpsichord is very much the preserve of specialists and early-music supporters and has seen very little progress in design. Enter architect and musical philosopher John Körmeling. In addition to designing utopian public spaces like the 'Happy Street' which served as the Dutch pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010, and the 'Straight Road' artwork which played with the mismatch between the curvature of the earth and our need to see life in two dimensions, Körmeling has devised a system of music that sets aside familiar western tuning and is based instead on square roots, areas and volumes. In order to realise this music, he turned back to the harpsichord and adapted its jangling sound to an intonation that literally plays Pythagorean ratios. Remember Pythagoras from high school? Take a right angled triangle: a²+b²=c²... or play with the square roots of 1, 2, 3. Körmeling made it possible to hear ratios and proportions that we usually only encounter on the pages of a math book. They don't sound... normal, but being mathematical they very quickly sound logical. Körmeling now had his instrument, but who would have the imagination and vision to play it. He turned to the veteran rule-breaker Charlemagne Palestine, pioneer of long-form improvisations on harpsichord, harmonium and other neglected keyboard instruments. The idea of "playing a triangle" immediately appealed. Responding to the invitation from Körmeling, he said that "thiss Pythagoriann harpsichordd was just upp myy alley..." (he writes like he plays: his own way). Palestine saw the new instrument and named it the Frogsichord after its colour. This double LP documents performances on the Frogsichord made in Brussels, Rotterdam and in Cappadocia, Turkey. The sound is strange, perhaps even estranging, but Palestine has made it his own, and created a music that is rich and detailed, not simply "exotic". It's no longer a question of "western" tonality colliding with "non-European" harmonic systems. Here is music that taps into the universal language of mathematics, one that we are all programmed, however unwillingly, to understand. Meet the Frogsichord. It will change how you listen to music. It might even help you with maths. And it doesn't sound like skeletons at all, but full of life. The cover is made from hand sewed green fur. Limited and numbered edition of 200 copies.

RAUDIVE, KONSTANTIN - THE VOICES OF THE DEAD (LP/SUB ROSA)

For many, the first traces of the Raudive Tapes were in William Burroughs fictions and articles. The fact is, these mysterious magnetic tapes, which capture the voices of the dead, and were recorded by the Baltic scientist Konstantin Raudive, are not a fiction but a reality (we are not here to judge their scientific objectivity ). These tapes, as rare as Lovecraft's 'Necronomicon', are now in Sub Rosa's archives. What we can find in this record? 1: Two introductions by Konstantin Raudive and a large session of examples from his archives (July 1965). 2: Nine extracts from the Gerhard Stempnik experiments - musician of the Berlin Philharmonic and close friend of Raudive (tapes from 1980). 3: A Raudive celebration including unpublished material by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, David Toop, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Calla and Carl Michael von Hausswolff. They have all composed an exclusive piece of music based on the Raudive material. It goes from a close examination of the material itself to a more evocative mood. SIDE 1: 01. Konstantin Raudive - Here Is Konstantin Raudive... Part #1 02. Gerhard Stempnik - Sound Piece #1: Astrid A Little Bit 03. Gerhard Stempnik - Sound Piece #2: Karajan Kluk 04. KRIEGER, ULRICH - WALL OF SOUND: DRONES PATTERNS NOISES (3CD) (CD/SUB ROSA)

'Wall Of Sound' is a series of CDs about music that invites the listener to indulge themselves in sound. It doesn't guide an audience through a narrative-like a song-, but offers the listener slow changing and developing soundscapes, acoustic sculptures, to immerse themselves in. How listeners move in and through these sounds is up to them: meditative drifting along, focusing on certain small details of sounds, letting themselves be taken away by emerging psycho-acoustic phenomena or going back and forth between listening attitudes. On this 3CD set, Ulrich Krieger plays pieces from composers Alvin Lucier, Phil Niblock, John Cage, John Duncan, James Tenney, Terry Riley, Lee Ranaldo, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Boris Hegenbart and Zbigniew Karkowski. He is well known as a saxophone player in contemporary composed and free improvised music as well as a composer of chamber music and electronic music.

OSCILLATORIAL BINNAGE - AGITATIONS: POST-ELECTRONIC SOUNDS (CD/SUB ROSA)

London-based electroacoustic quartet Oscillatorial Binnage have been giving workshops and performing live experimental improvised music together since 2004. The group is comprised of Fari Bradley, Toby Clarkson, Christopher J. Weaver and Daniel Wilson. Characterised by their repurposing of found objects, they began using self-built electromagnetic assemblies in 2007. Oscillatorial Binnage employ everything from springs to woks; from books to ice, to create sounds that entwine the domestic with the industrial, and the scientific with the alchemical. This is reflected in the diversity of spaces in which they have performed, including a subterranean vault, a testing factory, a water tank, a disused bus station, a yurt, a kitchen, churches, ballrooms, caves, aircraft hangars, museums, tunnels, kiosks, sheds, galleries, as well such established venues as The Tate Modern, The Wellcome Trust, The Science Museum, IKLECTIK Art, and Cafe Oto. 'Agitations: Post-Electronic Sounds' constitutes a series of sonic exercises based around one principal philosophy: that systems of electromagnetically-resonated physical objects can lead to complex electronic-sounding tones that emerge acoustically, progressing themselves in surprising non-linear dynamic states, providing pointers for further actions upon the objects. Techniques usually associated with electronic music, such as modulation, waveshaping, filtering, etc., are here applied to acoustic physical systems via prods, cranks, levers, gears, and jacks. The bulk of the recordings were made at La Borde Basse/Studio Midi-Pyrénées in 2013, with additional tracks recorded with electromagnetic-force-field resonated oil drums at Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, and upgraded reconstructions of Luigi Russolo's Futurist intonarumori at Mount Pleasant, Clapton. Starting with fallen dry leaves, found pottery and brass junkets, the experiments progressed to combinations of interconnected objects, including industrial springs, clamps, woks, rods, hand-held brass bells, earthenware, dry leaves, stones, pitchforks, feathers, paper, plastic receptacles, lamp-post doors, wicker baskets, grilles, bottles, barrels, and much more. The album forms an acoustic exploration into the alchemy of found objects, and the origins of inspiration.

METAL/STONER/HARDROCK

DELICE - SILLAGE (LP/BEVERINA/CASUS BELLI MUSICA)

Délice is the brainchild of B.M., known for his projects Skyforest, A Light In The Dark, Annorkoth, Autumn's Kingdom and Hiki. The music on 'Sillage' is marked with a sad smile, and it's deeply emotional, melancholic, romantic. It creates something special in the mood distinguishing this album among many "brothers in trade". 'Sillage' will be of interest for fans of Adorn, Morose and Hypomanie. Limited to 100 copies on black vinyl.

ELDER DRUID - GOLGOTHA (LP/SELF RELEASE)

Elder Druid are a doom/sludge band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They formed in early 2015 and have since released 3 EPs and two full length albums, with their debut album being released on Black Bow Records. They have toured extensively throughout the UK and Ireland sharing stages with bands such as Conan, Monolord, Slomatics, Dead Witches, AHAB and Bad Kush. m 'Golgotha' (2020) received acclaim from many online doom/sludge publications including The Obelisk, The Sludgelord and Doomed & Stoned. "Pained vocals met with deafening Sabbath worship. If you can imagine Down on mescaline, you'll be close to the hypnotic riffage of these Northern Irish occultists." ~Musipedia of Metal.

LESATH - SACRED ASHES (CD/BEVERINA/CASUS BELLI MUSICA)

'Sacred Ashes', the debut album of the atmospheric black metal project Lesath is a journey out of the light and into the dark. It is an ode to the irrevocable culmination, an irreversible conclusion to all that once was alive and sentient. Through the album's path, it all comes to life even beyond the nadir only to be placed among the isle of the dead eventually where all beauty, all mirth, and all feeling lay dormant, bereft and forlorn, at peace with permanence along the blinding darkness that has perhaps lingered within the floating halls for the longest time. The album was conceived in order to resolve and renew, to bury and ascend.

PHANTOM DRUID - DEATH & DESTINY (CD/OFF THE RECORD)

"Phantom Druid brings a crushing take on doom's masters of old. Bearing a weight of tone and a classic voice that was tailor made for the genre." ~Shasta Beest/Stoner Hive. For fans of Pentagram, Trouble, Black Sabbath. Limited edition of 300 handnumbered copies worldwide!

JAZZ/AVANTGARDE

GRDINA, GORDON -'S SQUARE PEG- - LIVE AT THE WHITE ROOM (LP/BLACK DOT)

Gorgeous live debut LP by an extremely flexible quartet put together by Vancouver based string-monster Gordon Grdina. Grdina plays both electric guitar and oud. His fellow trvellers are violinist Mat Maneri, bassist and synth player Shahzad Ismaily and German drummer Christian Lillinger. Some parts on this album are definitely jazzoid, others are more like free-rock, still others have an almost avant-folk feel.

GUSTAFSSON, MATS - IN THE BLACK DOT WORLD OF ADVENTURES (LP/BLACK DOT)

Swedish saxophone madman Mats Gustafsson recorded live at the White Room performance space in Nanaimo, BC, Canada on June 23, 2019.
