The trio of Aidan Baker, Christopher Kukiel, and Richard Baker return to the quiet with hushed tribal timbres, however, these ambiences are riveting in a way that that other ambiences are not, probably because the group does not think with an ambient attitude. This is the sound of mining midnight. In a universe where experimentalism is often just a nice way of saying "boring," hearing seasoned musicians actually craft something interesting sans computers is like having an orgasm. Formed in 1978 by Cole Palme (one-time member of the LAFMS group AIRWAY) and Bond Bergland (later of SAQQARA DOGS), the two initially called themselves MINIMAL MAN and performed a handful of shows along with Patrick Miller (who would go on to have a great solo career under the MM moniker). Soon they enlisted bassist Joseph T. Jacobs (BAY OF PIGS) and emerged from their Mission-district basement with their own unique take on the burgeoning English and New York post-punk scenes. The results were throbbing walls of damaged electronics, grim lyrical musings, droning bass, piercing guitar, and a modified Roland CR-78 played at 1/4 its slowest speed. FACTRIX's sole "studio" album, 1981's Scheintot, is a dark, moody, and penetrating work that grows more contemporary every year. Genuinely disturbing at times and often disorientating, it filters the influence of peers such as CABARET VOLTAIRE and DNA through the sonic and structural sensibilities of THE VELVET UNDERGROUND. Mostly track one is made up of manipulated noises with some synthesizer or theremin phrases added for detail and contrast. The second track is a bit more focused, with less noise, more recognizable melodic content and less invasive loops. 0373131 CD CH 89 9326425806630 CHAPTER MUSIC	TENNISCOATS - ALL ABOARD! For more than 15 years, Tokyo, Japan's Tenniscoats have been keyboardist/vocalist Saya and guitarist Takashi Ueno. The duo have brought equal parts meditative intensity and whimsical humour to a series of acclaimed psychedelic albums, beginning with 2000s The Theme Of Tenniscoats. But Tenniscoats have rarely released music without collaborating with others. Most famously, they teamed up with Scottish indie pop legends The Pastels in 2009 for the wonderful Two Sunsets album on Domino Records. They also worked with Swedish group Tape for 2007s Tan Tan Therapy and followup Papa's Ear (released in January this year), as well as US outsider pop icon Jad Fair for 2011's Enjoy Your Life. Saya has also released an album with Satomi Matsuzaki from Deerhoof under the name One One, while Ueno and Deerhoof's Greg Saunier occasionally perform live as Can Can. In fact, 2011 album Tokinouta is one of the few releases attributable to Tenniscoats alone. New album All Aboard! continues the band's collaborative tradition. Tenniscoats have joined forces with legendary Japanese drummer Ikuro Takahashi, active since the mid-70s and revered for his work with experimental and psych/folk icons like High Rise, Fushitsusha, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Nagisa Ni Te and Che Shizu. Takahashi first played with Tenniscoats a decade ago when they visited his hometown Sapporo, the snowed-in capital of Japan's icy north island Hokkaido. So in 2005, when they began to record with Australian expat Richard Horner in his Sapporo studio Black Snowflake Sound, they naturally asked Takahashi to join them. The result, pieced together over years of annual visits to Sapporo, is an album that presents Tenniscoats at their most relaxed and most compelling. Nominally their "rock" record, if only because they often perform drummerless, All Aboard! is warm, loose and sprawling, while retaining those hypnotic Tenniscoats melodies. It is their first album for Chapter Music since concert opus Live Wanderus in 2005. DVD-R. Instuif is a DVD collaboration with German video artist Sabine Bürger. It's the prequel for a much bigger project that Machinefabriek will be doing with Steve Roden, later this year. At first sight, Instuif appears to be a static video piece with equally static music. But the beauty lies within the details of this hypnotic 20 minutes. The visuals as well as the music very slowly evolve. Particles float across the screen as if they're dancing. Hypnotic, like watching an aquarium, a campfire, or waves crashing onto shore. It might make you forget track of time. This piece was originally made for an installation, with the video and audio in a continuous loop, projected on a big screen, in a dark room. The version presented on this DVD is an attempt to translate this immersive experience to a home environment.
