A 7" single from a new Portuguese band, Beautify Junkyards, featuring a suitably beautiful version of Nick Drake's song (acid-folk meets psychedelia meets subtle electronica, and all recorded in a field), together with superb version of Os Mutantes Fuga No.2, which combines that distinctive Latin American take on psychedelia with electronics courtesy of the always-excellent Neotropic. "It's always a risk taking on a Nick Drake song, but as soon as I heard Beautify Junkyards version From The Morning, I fell in love with it - it shimmers and lifts your spirits (or at least it does mine, and I'm a pretty dour Brummie) I hope you feel the same way. I've always felt I should appreciate Os Mutantes more than I do -and this new version of Fuga No.2 has given me the encouragement to reinvestigate the bands back-catalogue - although I have to admit to much-preferring this new interpretation to the original. This was a very special musical session that took place in Dr. Space's home studio in Oct 2009. KG and Love from the Swedish band Siena Root came down and we were to have a laid back jam session at my place to make some more tracks for the Glossolalia CD to complete it for Dan McGuire and the Facemop label. Thomas was supposed to come and play bass, Mogen's synthesizer but neither showed up so it was just the three of us. We laid down 15 jams and these are the best 5. It was all improvised with no overdubs except for a bass on High Rise. It all has an eastern feel to it but not all the tracks contain sitar. This was their first release, and it's a great way to start. A genius version of the Slim Harpo classic played through a haze of electrically-charged Stones-itus. These guys did shows with the Elevators and even covered one of their tracks for their third 45. This masterful punk gem came on Dunwich, itself a Chicago label, and was the only thing this bunch released before vanishing into the wind. It assaults the senses with a jagged twin guitar sting and crashes through with a full on 3 chord crunch. They made they mark with this one 45, never feeling the need to make a second - as all bands should. Allegedly one of them became a priest. 0374482 7" BISMARK 1013 BISMARK	BRIKS - FOOLISH BABY /CAN YOU SEE ME Texas garage classic on original label. The Briks released their first 45, the poppy "Can You See Me?" on Bismark in '66, though garage fans love the flip side, "Foolish Baby". Both sides are originals by Richard Borgens and Cecil Cotten. Dot label picked it up for national distribution and to promote the record the Briks traveled to Houston for shows at the Catacombs, around November of 1966. These troubled future gas station attendants came from Texas. Their first single was a local pop hit, but by the time of this, their third 45 they were spit-roasting beat band. Comped on Texas Flashbacks amongst others, this is a truly great example of garage beat made to be performed and played at parties. Four On The Floor beat with crackling guitar and a snarling vocal. 0374481 7" UMI 100 UMI	CHEVELLE V - COME BACK BIRD/I'M SORRY GIRL Crude Texas garage punk version different from Askel label. This is so good, they released it twice. First on Umi in 1966, then they messed around with it and released it on Askel, Which is best, Nuts to you pal, they both are. They came from Abelene Texas and cut three singles in all, Come Back Bird is two of them. This has been comped more times than Slade's Merry Xmas, but it sounds brilliant every time. The bands music career was pole-axed when two members of the band got drafted shortly after this was released. A stunning follow up to the debut 45 "20 Seas, 4 Oceans" this spring, which came and went in the blink of an eye, also on The GPS. The recently extended "I am Ampersand", is the moniker for the solo project of Fujiya and Miyagis Matthew Hainsby- and "Negative" acts perfectly here as a taster for the incredible debut LP. Hinterzimmer Records is extremely proud to release one of Ghédalia Tazartès' major works of the last 20 years, Ante-Mortem. Although simply named 1 to 23, the album bears a collection of very diverse tracks, a couple of them connected in a thematical frame, others simply standing for themselves. What holds them all together is first and all Tazartes' archetypical voice. One could say that Ante-Mortem contains some of his harshest ever tracks as well as a couple of his most humorous ones. Generally it is more than exciting to hear that some parts of Ante-Mortem could as well have been created around the same time as his masterpiece Une Eclipse Totale De Soleil - his music sounds as timeless as it did 30 years ago. 'Regel' is finally reissued for the first time on vinyl and remastered under the supervision of the Milanese artist. The record consists of two untitled tracks. Mostly track one is made up of manipulated noises with some synthesizer or theremin phrases added for detail and contrast. The second track is a bit more focused, with less noise, more recognizable melodic content and less invasive loops. The music is unlinear and effortlessly multilayered and the sound focuses on texture rather than structure. Here you can see M.B.'s early phase as a sick, cancerous organism eating itself out. Their sound is purely instrumental, intimate, seductive, dimensional and brings to mind a dimly lit South American dance hall, or something you might hear in a Lynch film filtered through the sounds of a 1950s film noir style Mambo session with an edge from a sort of spooky and distorted hollow-body guitar not unlike late 60s Robert Fripp. Its all very tasty and atmospheric. Kalopia is their first vinyl release and contains the best tracks from their two Dionysus CDs Orchestra Superstring and Easy. This 1970 cult movie concerns the attempts of a biker gang to honor a fallen comrade, in the face of a mining disaster and resistance from local rednecks. Its fine soundtrack boasts contributions from Buffalo Springfield drummer Dewey Martin, Texan acid rockers Fever Tree and cult singer-songwriters Mark Eric and Rabbbit Mackay, as well as studio outfits Sylvanus and East West Pipeline, who cook up a tasty blend of psych, glam and funk-rock. It makes its CD debut here, complete with background notes.
