One of 2 new 45s on The GPS for June, this ones a split featuring a spanking new tune from The See See backed by a gorgeous debut from new Wirral band By The Sea. "Automobile" once again displays The See See's penchant for hazy, sun baked West Coast psych / power pop. Hooks a plenty, killer backing vocals, and a tidy follow up to the mighty "Late Morning Light" full length that came and went in a week on wax for the GPS, with a CD amassing salivating reviews throughout. The Wirrals "By The Sea" are steadily creating quite a buzz for themselves both on Merseyside and down here in London after a number of stunning live shows, where their (so far), small cannon of beautiful 60s flavoured tunes leave audiences eagerly tipping the band for future greatness. Sublime songwriting recalling The Left Banke, Gene Clark, The WCPAEB, with subtle nods to that first euphoric moment you heard the Stone Roses for the first time. The second of this months new 45s on The GPS sees a stunning split 45, pairing Sonic Booms Spectrum with New Yorks Cheval Sombre. The Spectrum side sees a debut airing for the full length version of live favourite "Mary", previously released as a nagging teaser intro / outro to the great "Indian Giver" CD collaboration with Jim Dickinson a couple of years back. A beautiful 7 minute ode to Kraftwerk and Suicide via a passing nod to Stereolab and Neu! that debuts on wax and as a full length take here, exclusively. Put simply, this is just ridiculously awesome.. The reverse side features an exclusive Sonic Boom remix of the wonderful "Red Moon" from the imminent, glorious Cheval full length. New York based Christopher Porpora has previously released some wonderful singles on Static Caravan and Trensmat, leading in turn to a full length release on Dean Warehams "Double Feature" label. Whether one scribes term "delicate, druggy, slow core folk" sits true, remains a matter for debate, but either way this has an air of a Nick Drake tune around it, with added Sonic Boom Elektronik impetus. ...OWLS'. Woodcraft Folk re-emerge from the hills of Lancashire with 2 new tunes for the GPS. "Quiet Birds." is a hazy electronic, vaguely psych work out with vocals by Ivan Ink and Pen. The flip is a wholly different sonic experience. "At Home with Owls" starts off all strange and hallucinatory but soon the drums, swirling organ and moogs take over, -reminiscent of some kraut themed, motorik 60s horror soundtrack. Dressed up in trademark, lovingly created packaging consisting of hand drawn spirograph inserts, hammer card sleeves and half white, half clear wax, numbered to 400 copies, with none of that download or cd nonsense. Cloudland Canyon debut in the UK with a killer 3 trk 12" EP "Aureliua" for The Great Pop Supplement; following acclaimed previous releases for Holy Mountain, Kranky and Not Not Fun. The epic 13 minute ebb and flow / build and pulse of the title track "Aureliua" is incredible. Like some Drone-Dream collision, where its intense peak recalls perhaps the mighty "Suicide" by Spacemen 3, yet channelled further towards the cosmos! So it comes as no surprise that mastering duties (across the whole EP) were performed by Sonic Boom; who also adds bass swells to B side opener "Closer" which starts like some outtake from later Sky era Cluster only to re-invent itself later in as the meatiest of beats kicks in. Limited to 150 handnumbered copies on 180 gram black vinyl. THE HEAVY EYES are a young rock trio from Memphis, Tennessee. Their full-length debut contains 11 tracks (2:55 - 5:12 min.) with a total playing time of 40:21. They describe their sound as stoner blues. I call it stoner blues psych rock with very strong influences from the American rockscene 1969-73. The spirit of Cactus, Sir Lord Baltimore, Blue Cheer, Josefus and Mountain floats above this one all the way. The music sounds fantastically warm and has been completely recorded with analog equipment ... not, but it truly sounds like that, you'll be surprised! A mixture of early Fu Manchu and Budgie, especially the vocals. The drums are massive and very Zeppelin-esque, the killer bass originates from Grand Funk. Songs like 'Voytek', 'War Apple'and 'Where Is Wilder'are extremely catchy tunes and hit as hard as Pentagram's 'Forever My Queen'(1973). Apart from 'Ill Cut You Down'by Uncle Acid & The Dead Beatsthese are the best songs of the year 2011 in my opinion. The album consists of seven songs which were recorded and produced during two lengthy recording sessions in the summer 2010 at The Dude studios. The material was mixed and produced by Karle Odegaard. The musical palate of the band is diverse and multifaceted stretching from bellowing accordion to jazzy guitars and world music inspired percussion. Guest performances include a hauntingly beautiful saw and an iridescent string section. Genre wise the repertoire meanders through a musical landscape of looming folky rock tunes to lamenting bossa nova pieces. Monstruous and unreleased at the time heavy psychedelic Westcoast artefact of the highest order. This is one of the five best ever promo only releases to emerge from California. Only released in a quantity of a couple of copies to get a major record deal that never materialized. Three of the songs were used in a low-budget biker flick called 'Black Angels'. This hidden gem was found while looking for unreleased music by the band 'The Zoo' of 'Presents Chocolate Moose' fame. The original producer told that a demo LP was released by THE ZOO after the 'Chocolate Moose' album, under the name JOYFUL NOISE, but at this time they were looking for a tougher name to fit the music and they found MAD DOG. Under this name a couple of test pressings were done. Earlier released as C1/C2 without any kinds of info using the numbers from the dead end part of the vinyl. Elliott Murphy and his Brother formed the backbone of the Murphys, a New York Underground Garage and Psych Rock Band (13th Floor Elevators covers as early as 1967). When time came to record a demo for a major label deal, tensions within the band erruptet and they broke up. Instead of folding , Elliott, his brother and a dear friend recorded the whole original material with 2 guitars and a bass guitar only. We were very honoured to get to open the Roadburn Festival on April 15th 2010, with the first set in the Bat Cave. They had some trouble getting the people in so it was not that crowded when we started but by 20 mins into the concert it was totally packed with enthusiastic psychedelic rock fans. As we play totally improvised music, one never knows what will be captured but on this day, we came out strong and played an amazing concert. The artwork and song titles are inspired by the fact that the volcano in Iceland exploded the day before this gig and caused chaos. Many bands could not get to the festival and we were stuck in Holland for two extra days with no way to get back home. Phaze your Fears is a vinyl and digital only release with a potential CD release in the future. It is the 13th proper release by the Oresund Space Collective. The music on this album was born on Sept. 24th, 2010, the same recording session as the Entering into the Space Country release. The material for these jams occurred later in the session (Jams 4 and 6). The members from the Univerzals (drums, bass, guitar, synthesizer) were making up the main band and were also joined by DR. Space, Johan Dahlström, (First Band from Outer Space), Mathias Danielsson (My Brother the Wind, Gösta Berlings Saga), Stefan Krey (Gas Giant, SumoSun, ILDHUas well as Claus Bohling (Hurdy Gurdy, Secret Oyster, Elektrum). There are a lot of guitar interactions and great melodic lines and solos by all. vichsky, who previous supplied us with some words for the Black Tomato CD. An album full of VINTAGE 1966-1968 Music by the band that brought you the incredible 'HASHISH' on the legendary San Franciso Sampler 'Fifth Pipe Dream'. This is the first ever release of this killer psychedelic West Coast monster, that took many years to complete!!! West Coast Natural Gas started in 1965 in Seattle. In early 1967 they went to San Francisco to work for a local music manager named Matthew Katz. Katz was the original manager for Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape and later also It's a Beautiful Day. He talked West Coast Natural Gas into signing a contract with him but being young and stupid, they didn't realize at the time that they had basically signed everything over to him. They went into the studio and recorded some original tunes, incl 'A Favor', 'Go Run And Play', 'The Jumping Frog', 'Hashish', 'Water Or Wine', 'Beyond This Place', and 'Two's A Pair'. In early 1968 the band broke up and went back to Seattle. Katz released the single 'Go Run And Play' b w/ 'A Favor' on his S.F. Sound label under the name West Coast Natural Gas. Later he released a compilation album -the first San Francisco Sound sampler- called 'Fifth Pipe Dream'. The four songs mentioned before, 'Water Or Wine', 'Hashish', 'Beyond This Place' and 'Two's A Pair' were the ones recorded by West Coast Natural Gas, though Kats presented these as by the band 'Indian Pudding & Pipe'. This superb release includes all the above mentioned songs, plus archival material taken from acetates. A big surprise here is that four recently unshelved and never before heard songs are included as well. All of these were recorded in 1966 at a local Seattle Recording Studio before the band moved to San Francisco. "Ex-Greenhouse Effect singer/guitarist Eric 'Lando'Hagen formed White Witch Canyon in 2007 and released their self-titled debut in 2008. From the way the stun-guitar of 'The Witch'kicks in, it doesn't leave much doubt that White Witch Canyon are anything but unexpurgated Stoner Rock. There's no 'Post'anything here - it's overloaded low-end, pedal-powered distortion in both riff and solo and Lando waxing prolific on getting high with witches, androids and broke-down starships. It's no-think heavy rock'n'roll that doesn't pretend to be anything else. It's cool that the band mention The Beatles (among others) in the 'thanks'section - not just because I happen to think The Beatles were brilliant, but because Lando and band have a subtle, barely discernable way of including catchy choruses into their songs. 'Boom Goes The Dynamite', 'Parasitic Stray'and 'The Witch'all have this in some fashion. These subtle pop sensibilities in no way interfere with the band's more adventurous choices to jam and in several cases but most notably in the opening of 'Thirty Three And One Third' knock the living shit out of things. This was a nice ray of heavy rockin'sunshine to experience given what I usually listen to and the current incredibly fucked-up state of things on the globe. It makes me nostalgic for the late 90s, early 00s when the stoner rock dinosaur ruled my CD player and I had money to spend. This is the 5th CD by the all improvised space rock band from the Copenhagen-Malmo region of Scandinavia (oresund). It was recorded at the Black Tornado Studios in November 2007 and featured new members on drums, percussion, bass, guitar and sitar that had never been in the studio with the band before. The dynamics and vibe was different and KG from the band Siena Root played some amazing sitar on the opening and closing pieces of music on the CD. We think you will find the music has a more progressive and melodic element and is less spacey than our previous releases. The same cool vibe and long journeys await the patient listener. The CD was mixed by Steve Hayes (Secret Saucer) in the USA. Steve also provides on synthesizer solo on Orbital Elevator to replace one that Mogens played when his synthesizer went out of tune. Steve has different ears and different gear so the mix is unique. The band allowed Steve full freedom in the mix process, so he actually becomes more a part of the musical project, so to speak. This is the 11th release by the completely improvised space rock band from the resund region in Scandinavia. The band is mainly made up of members from Copenhagen, Denmark and the Malmo Sweden area. This is the last of the material from the October 2008 studio session that gave us the Dead Man in Space and Slip into the Vortex releases. The music on this CD is one lon 56 min space rock jam! We split it into three parts for ease of play. It starts very slow heavy and spacey with a massive sound, before the track heads into a new directions with some beautiful guitar. A uptempo section develops after 15 or so minutes and features some intense guitar and synthesizer interaction. Due to an out of tune synthesizer, a new synthesizer section was overdubbed by Mogens. Beautiful debut 45 from Bristol based band Snails. They formed in 2010 when Dan Weltman (aka Hollowbody) recruited his friend Mog Fry (The Wraiths/Ukeytronica) to help record a soundtrack for a budget slasher movie involving a homicidal nun. Sadly no Baftas resulted, but this bonding process led to the creation of several more lost soundtracks. F.i. songs centred on two voices projecting a vision of widescreen heartache as seen through rain streaked semi-detached windows. Their sound, awash in melancholy folk and sumptuous pop arrangements, bears the influence of mavericks such as Basil Kirchin, Clive Palmer and Moondog, with tips of the hat to Francoise Hardy, The Left Banke and The Pastels. Karen Novotny X was a short lived electronic project based in Hackney, East London and comprised three members; Cy Levene, Anna Bloom and Niko Nicolotti. Meeting and formulating ideas at the London School of Economics and the Slade School of Art around the dawn of 1978. They resided in a number of East London squats and set up makeshift studios with borrowed equipment and Synthesisers purchased by Levene. A creative rush between the spring of 1978 and the summer of 1979, saw them recording a plethora of music primarily influenced by Disco, a number of key Italian composers, Throbbing Gristle, Krautrock and the industrial sounds coming out of Blooms hometown of Sheffield, not to mention an obsession for Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". This intense 2 year period took its toll on this very close and guarded threesome and they soon found themselves heading off in three directions. Bloom back to her hometown of Sheffield whilst Niko was enlisted to the Italian Army. The tapes -which included last years quick sell out GPS 5 trk 7" and cassette- have been coaxed from the reclusive Levene who now resides in Brussels; and leaves the KN X archives empty, with the release of this full length. So what are we left with? Well Levene now looks back on this short, but eminently fruitful period claiming they were trying to make electronic / disco themed pop music in an attempt to get on to TV. While disco may have been at the heart of KN X, a very different beast lurks within. An often dark, unsettling narrative set to simple drum machines, synthesisers, sequences and the isolated, almost childlike vocals of Cy Levene and Anna Bloom puts this shortlived project into a whole new genre. An LP -and series of recordings- that its creators imagined forever lost to the masses, now seems set to earn itself a key role as main hitter in the murky, yet increasingly researched world of mid to late 70s minimal synth. New up on The GPS is a beautiful new Jonas Reinhardt 12" mini EP - following hot on the heels of their acclaimed Not Not Fun LP 'Music For The Tactile Dome' earlier this year, not to mention essential previous outings on Kranky and KRAAK. Initially a project launched by San Francisco based Jesse Reiner, who began writing and creating analog synthesiser music over 10 years ago whilst studying music synthesis at the Harvard Electronic Music Centre. (Recently extended to a 4 piece for the road and future recording, by one time and current members of Trans Am, Mi Ami, Citay and 3 Leafs amongst others). 2 deep trip kosmische pieces, heavy on rich Cyborg-esque swells and pulsing drones, expansive simmer and swelling kraut soundscapes aimed for the stars. Hypnotic, warm and melodic with a celestial eeriness. Shades of Froese and Schulze figure for sure, with passing nods also perhaps to some of the later Sky oeuvre; "Sonnenlicht", "Synthesist", later Cluster etc. Cut and mastered at Abbey Road, this one looks just beautiful too. Side A of this 12 is cut as a 7" played at 45 and Side B cut as a 10" at 33. 11+ mins of music overall. Both sides featuring on disc etching from GPS head, Dom, also at Abbey Road. Black Unicorn is the solo synth project of Akron, Ohio based Curt Brown (Cane Swords, Rubber City Noise). "Rediscovering Infinity" is a debut on wax and compiles 5 killer, evocative synth pieces, acting perfectly as an introduction to his work. 3 tunes here previously seeing the light of day on tiny run cassette and cdr releases, whilst the monumental title track (recorded especially for this project) is constructed as a 5 part movement that reinterprets an earlier theme as a story of cosmic awakening and redemption. Black Unicorns music is both contemplative and exploratory- ranging from subtle drone to melodic outburst and is created on both analogue and digital synthesizers, sequencers and effects. Basic electronic building blocks are treated as analogous to alphabet characters- another way of telling a story that is both in harmony and supplement to the written word. Each piece on the LP has its own special insert that expands upon the music through textual fragments and icon- detailing both instrumentation and basic meaning. The larger insert features an illustration by Matt Horak, whose drawings are scattered throughout. The second release on Deep Distance -a synth / kraut themed side project to The Great Pop Supplement, and a wonderful album in beautiful black embossed sleeves released as a numbered edition of 250 copies on vinyl only. Thelema was founded in summer 1994 with the goal to produce independent sound compositions. Hans Jürgen, musician and sound engineer, places his main focus on the different tone qualities of the instruments, and uses variety as a means of expression for each song he creates. An hypnotic sound with a distinct film soundtrack atmosphere has developed over the years. The passionate film music enthusiast was strongly influenced by the musical soundtracks just like 'Videodrome', 'Suspiria' or 'Twin Peaks'. The broad musical spectrum of Hans Jürgen can be seen in his involvement with bands like Sturmpercht (Percht/Steinklang), Soulsearch (Last Episode), Magdalena (Ahnstern), Our Survival Depends on Us (Psychedoomelic) and various theater projects in the past. On one of his many visits to Iceland, Hans Jürgen was personally introduced to the master of Iceland epic song (rimur), Steindor Andersen (Sigur Ros, Hilmar Orm Hilmarson). Their enthusiasm for making music together culminated in the previous album 'Eldur Og Is' (Steinklang), which represents a perfect soundtrack for a tour around Iceland. The new album 'Hearing The Light' was inspired during a recording session with Steindor Andersen and explores new musical territory.
