Their only hit, "Jig-a-jig", ist not typical for their music. The band can look back on a history of eleven long-players, not counted the many compilations. On Tuesday, 22nd October 1970, the group performed in the Gruga hall at the third Essen Pop & Blues Festival. The event was recorded semi-professionally by the promoters. The recordings were mastered now in a first-class sound studio with great effort and care. The sound, however, is naturally not as good as that of the studio LPs. The 12-page deluxe insert in LP size contains a long band history in German and English, a detailed discography, numerous cover and label repros, a gig list, many informations about the festival as well as a personal retrospective report by Dave Arbus. 0358656 LP THLP 2 4016342600026 THORS HAMMER	FOTHERINGAY - ESSEN 1970 Fotheringay was the legendary English folk group around singer Sandy Denny who died a long time ago. She had become well-known with the groups Strawbs and Fairport Convention and was elected best British singer several times. At the end of 1969, she founded Fotheringay together with four friends. They could immediately sign a contract with the Island label. On Friday, 23rd October 1970, they had a gig at the third Essen Pop & Blues festival in the Gruga Hall. The concert was then recorded semi-professionally by the host. Now, the tapes have been elaborately re-mastered by Fotheringay guitarist Jerry Donahue who got the most out of the sound that was technically possible. 0366265 LP PALP 1 2090503662650 PAN	FOXTROT - SHADOW OF THE PAST Perhaps more reminiscent of CAMEL circa "Stationary Traveller" than the GENESIS song their name implies, FOXTROT were a mid-80s Norwegian band headed by ex-KERRS PINKs guitarist Harald Lytomt. Their drummer, Jon-Hakon Skarpsno, would also join KERRS PINK some thirteen years later. Their only legacy is a largely keyboard-oriented CD released in 1984. While not the most original band around, they do sound far better than most neo-prog bands of that era. Their only album, "A Shadow of the Past" (1984) is a mixture of CAMEL, PALLAS, early MARILLION, The ALAN PARSONS PROJECT and GENESIS circa "And Then There Were Three"; it features direct, pleasant, melodious 80s art rock with excellent vocals, interesting compositions, good musicianship and a fine production. It is a short album made up of six tracks averaging 6 minutes each, among them one memorable mini-epic title track. Formed at the end of the 60's, Gomorrha rised from the German progressive rock scene thanks to the help of the producer and sound engineer Conny Plank. The band original line up includes Helmut Pohl (drums) and Eberhard Krietsch (ogan, bass) with Ad Oschel and Ali Claudi at the guitars. They released their first album in 1970. The second recording "trauma" (1971) really marks a new step in the development of Gomorrha's original song. They distinguish with a dense heavy psych rock experience punctuated by organ dominated sequences. It now includes lyrics in English and a lead singer in the name of Peter Otten. In 1972 they release what will be considered as their summit "I Turned To See Whose Voice It Was"; An adventurous album featuring catchy instrumental jams, krautrock's original psych / spacey mood, pastoral flute parts and heavy guitar riffs. The concept of this release is focused on the apocalypse theme and the book of revelation. The "first psychedelic country concept" album features bluegrass mountain music Americana from the twilight zone mixed with tape effects, musique concrete, fuzz guitar, surreal lyrics imagery and themes from religion, death, sex and other timely concerns. Also included is a bonus LP record, "the Garden of Love", with some truly amazing and haunting unreleased material spanning the years 1950s-70s. The Garden of Love LP includes, amongst others, a song about wandering around in the desert eating peyote. All the music has been carefully transferred from the master tapes and is a facsimile of the original album (previous CD only reissues contained altered mixings). Lisa Isaksson grew up in a small town on the outskirts of Stockholm where she spent most of her time in horse stables dreaming of becoming a riding teacher and owning her own stables. When she wasnt with the horses she was drawing and spending time on her own in the garden and fantasized about the future. As Lisa grew older and discovered music the drawings and horses soon turned into song lyrics and it wasnt long before Lisa had rescued her mothers old guitar from a life in the attic and began experimenting with her voice and songs and began exploring recording techniques with a 4-track recorder. Through the years her love of music continued to grow and she started performing with friends and eventually forming the band Piu together with her school buddies, Lisa's debut record was a single released in Scotland in 2007. WOLFFF Prof. Wolfff lived a short and intensive life in the early 70s, as a part of the krautrock adventure - with gigs all over Germany and a TV performance at the Talentschuppen (ARD- first German channel). The band unexpectedly split in March 1972, shortly after producing their first album 'Prof. Wolfff', which was released in 1972 by Metronome. Along with Ihre Kinder and Ton, Steine, Scherben, an important political rockband from Berlin, Prof. Wolfff was one of the first progressive rock bands in Germany exclusively singing German rock songs, even before Udo Lindenberg released his first 'German' album. As a result, other musicians were inspired to compose rock songs using German language. "Mixing pop, blues, jazz and classical with German political lyrics (krautrock style), Prof. Wolfff's self-titled album was produced by Ihre Kinder manager Jonas Porst. At times Prof. Wolfff sounds like a strong blues rock act mixed with a bit of classical and psychedelia while at other times they come off as a mixture of pop and barbershop. While their predecessors, Suendenfall, exclusively dedicated themselves to jazz, the group included folk after a change in line-up and band name (following the example of Amon Duul II). In 1972, Hubert Schmitz invited the band into his Trepitia film and sound studio in Alpen-Druept for free recordings, as he wanted to test the newly installed equipment after a recent move into the new location. Thus the recordings were made for the album "Suendenfall II" (Trefiton HS 1017), which was released in a small edition of 200 copies at the end of 1972. Today it is sold at a price of about 500 to 1000 in mint condition. The musicians also breaks up with jam trips and lets loose the love of their musical roots. The title track Idioten (The Fool) ("polska not sly on a spot") madly mixes a Hlsingland polska with hard progressive rock. Stockholm Polka get a snorting country feel and the collective Senegal Beat becomes dreamlike Afro-funk psych with a Alpine feel. The closing Norwegian "walking tune" Sangenuten (The Song Without) is connected with a long tail of psychedelia. With Idioten (The Fool) Kebnekajse lifts Swedish folk rock to new heights. And new psychedelic overtones. A short biography for new listeners: During the 1970s Kebnekajse was known as Sweden's highest band. Lisa Isaksson grew up in a small town on the outskirts of Stockholm where she spent most of her time in horse stables dreaming of becoming a riding teacher and owning her own stables. When she wasnt with the horses she was drawing and spending time on her own in the garden and fantasized about the future. As Lisa grew older and discovered music the drawings and horses soon turned into song lyrics and it wasnt long before Lisa had rescued her mothers old guitar from a life in the attic and began experimenting with her voice and songs and began exploring recording techniques with a 4-track recorder. Through the years her love of music continued to grow and she started performing with friends and eventually forming the band Piu together with her school buddies, Lisa's debut record was a single released in Scotland in 2007. The single got a lot of good reviews and Lisa & Piu gave a couple of concert on the British Isles as well as home in Stockholm. They also came to perform with the British folk musician Roger Wootton who led the legendary acid folk band Comus during the early 1970s. The performances went so well that they were released as a live album. As summer came and turned Sweden into a green and pleasant place again the core of Piu; Lisa, David, Joel and Anders went to a small cottage in the beautiful archipelago north of Stockholm. They arranged and rehearsed the music and also had a lot of fun on the cliffs enjoying the endless sunsets of midsummer. The band dissolved in 1972 but reunited in 1995, ready for new adventures and they never ever lost the spirit. They still rank as one of the most amazing contemporary psych bands worldwide. During 2002-05, Mikael Hogstrom and his video camera accompanied their gigs. As time went on, it turned into a little project. Mikael showed the band his latest clips and under their merciless eyes and ears, those clips slowly developed into this DVD. The amazing footage and sound documents the band performing in Sweden, USA and Russia. For those of you that loved the Demo like I did, this is what you would expect their full length to sound and then some! There are a lot of catchy, layered riffs on top of many hooks and sing a long choruses. After forming his own Death / Doom band, Silent Winter, Kevin decided to venture more into the traditional side of Doom and Epic Doom Metal, drawing his main influences from Reverend Bizarre, Cathedral, and Black Sabbath. After a self-released EP (on CD-R) the foundation was laid down to make a bigger step into creating a full-length album with a stronger focus on the songwriting. With the progress of the new songs coming along, the recruit of drummer Darin McCloskey (Pale Divine, Falcon, ex Sinister Realm) stepped into play on the album. With the distance of 2 guys, you wouldnt be able to tell they werent in the same room while this was recorded. The songs remind me (but really hard to pinpoint) of a blend of a few different styles, like Reverend Bizarre, Lord Vicar, The Obsessed, with a small dose of Italian Horror church organs like Paul Chain, Black Hole, or Death SS might put together, but with a cleaner recording. They hardly played that much and went unknown to virtually many Doom Metal collectors because were never able to get this because it was only available as a 6 track demo known as "The Beginning", and it probably didnt get too far outside the Maryland area (I assume). This is a unique band to say the least, but also a very magical sounding band where there are some moments in the music where your jaw will just drop to the sheer innovativeness of the way they put these riffs and songs together. Tom (the guitar player) plays some of the sickest riffs Ive ever heard. Some of the stuff this guy comes up with is out of this world. Some of the songs they put together have like 5-7 amazing riffs in one song whereas a lot of bands rely on 1 or 2 good riffs to carry out a song (which isnt a bad thing either). I hear a ton of ANGEL WITCH, CELTIC FROST, DREAM DEATH, TROUBLE in their darker / doom-y sounds and in their faster thrash-y parts, theres a heavy VENOM, MOTORHEAD vibe. In short theyre best described as a Doom Metal, Thrash Metal band with amazing break downs. The first era is from 1979 to 1981 which is considered the big boom of Heavy Metal. The 2nd era is from 1982 to 1986-ish. So taking us into the mid 80s a band from the U.K. emerged called Deep Switch. They looked and sounded like no other band and that still holds true today. They never really took heavy metal too seriously, but that doesn't mean their music wasn't serious, because it was, although it was laced with a lot of humor. I think Deep Switch was more influenced by Monty Python than heavy metal. This is extremely unique and original material. Even if you're not into obscure N.W.O.B.H.M., you should at least treat yourself to hearing this just for the experience. The release consists of 2 CDs, the first one being their classic album, while the 2nd disc is a collection of all their demos. They had a very short lived career, but a very long-winded tale of their history is written inside this massive booklet along with ton of band photos. To keep it simple this re-issue is for all the die-hard MERCYFUL FATE fans out there. There are very few vocalists in the world that have what I like to call an acrobatic ability. When I think of some of the best vocalists out there with that ability there are 3 names that spring to mind; King Diamond, which we all know, Jonathon Stewart (from SLAUTER XSTROYES and ENERGY VAMPIRES), which some of us know, and the guy in this band (GENOCIDE (Nippon)), Toshihiro Takeuchi. Talk about dynamics, this guy has it all; melodic, imagination, crazy, high falsetto, and he does it in English and Japanese in the same song. Thats not all this band is good for though. The guitar players here are unbelievable! Theyve got an amazing style like Denner and Shermann once had back in the early MERCYFUL FATE days and a lot of their sound has a Doomy feel to it also. This is one of the very best hidden gems in all of Japan and this is top 1-5 records (depending on my mood) of all-time that came out of that country. This recording sounds like it should be on a major label and I didn't even mention the superior songwriting yet! The songs are very well written and catchy, I'm convinced there's not a stale riff in Al Morris's soul! The man is a guitar god!! Louis is a top-notch bass player, Dex's drums are thunderous and just about as balanced as it gets, and Joe's vocal performance is far beyond my expectation. I'm incredibly honored the band and their manager had faith in me to release their album and it's going to be a pleasure to read, hear, and see the reactions of metal fans far and wide with this release. Bands like BLACK HOLE, DARK QUARTERER, DEATH SS, PAUL CHAIN, BULLDOZER, RUN AFTER TO, NECRODEATH, BERSERKS are some of the better bands from that era. Id like to think that OLD YRON towards the end of the 80s was an unknown forgotten gem for the time of its release, especially since the tides were changing and this kind of IRON MAIDEN-esque heavy metal was beginning to die out in popularity while new genres started to emerge. I think this release was really unknown to a lot of people considering it was a DIY pressing. Here you will find extremely fast heavy metal, but not Thrash. OLD YRON had a very violent lead guitar layered with shredding riffs and over the top high pitched vocals. Think IRON MAIDEN meets YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, but without going overboard with the guitar shredding. The band has absolutely no demos, rehearsals, or any other music except for this album as far as we know. There were no master tapes so the best option the band wanted to do was to rip the music directly from the original vinyl. The only bonus tracks we could come up with was some dark classical music written by Antonio Ferrari in the early 2000s. Antonio talks about putting OLD YRON back together, but no one really knows if its going to happen or even what it will sound like. 0331727 CD SKRCD 23 0884502161083 SHADOW KINGDOM	REACTOR - THE REAL WORLD Back in the late 70s Richard Kueht and Paul Trowbridge played guitar in PENTAGRAM before being replaced by Victor Griffin, who were all familiar with. They hooked up with Steve Angel (singer/bass) and drummer Ronnie Sharpe and formed REACTOR. They played some live gigs in the mid 80's, one that is featured in this release. Shortly after the gig, Richard moved down to Florida and was replaced by Mike Reid, and at that time renamed the band THE REAL WORLD. They ended up only recording a 6 song studio EP which is the first 6 songs off of this release, that was never released until now. As far as their sound is concerned, it just came out natural for them, nothing forced, just basically some guys jamming good old SABBATH/PENTAGRAM influenced dirty Rock N Roll with a "social relevant" lyrical message to the fans. The music is raw, heavy, and catchy. After many line-up changes (even Joe Hasselvander (he played guitar) was in the band at one point), they decided to call it quits as it was more or less something for these guys to hang around and do with no pressure and to let off some steam rather than a band looking to go somewhere. This is one of the most obscure 80s bands around the Maryland/Virginia area, but I can tell you this is without a shadow of doubt quality Heavy Metal/Rock and deserves to be in anyones metal collection whos looking to complete their Maryland/Virginia Doom collection. This is a staple album in the Doom Metal genre and surely is a great mix of Black Sabbath and Rush, which could be considered as Progressive Doom if you want to get technical. Strangely enough the band was referred to as WIDOW back then because apparently the records that were floating around had no RITUAL name on it. RITUAL blends an unusual mix of 70's heavy rock and 80's rock sounds from the N.W.O.B.H.M. with a real dream-like effect. They're hard hitting old English Rock 'N Roll with a great clean singer/songwriter Gypsy Re Bethe that you might find yourself singing along to these infectious choruses. 10 years after "Widow" was released, came their 1993 album "Valley Of The Kings" picking up right where they left off in 1983. "Valley Of The Kings" sounds like it could have been released in 1984! Back in the mid-late 80s a lot of people were familiar with the legendary band Sanctuary because of they were able to sign a deal with a big label and with the help of Dave Mustaine were able to make a name for themselves. But lets take a step back before this band and here we are with Serpents Knight featuring the very well respected and well-known, Warrel Dane. This was the very first heavy metal band he was in. The band was never able to make a proper recording of the songs, just tried to do the best they could with home recording equipment. So keep in mind the music was saved on tapes after all these years and then re-mastered by Brad Poland himself in 2009. The music on these old tapes was very well written, dark, and featured some insanely high pitched vocals. Its a long story (which you will read in the CD booklet) but the band split up, Warrel went on to do Sanctuary and the rest was history. In the late 80s Brad was able to find a new singer and wanted to make another album, so they did and in this package youll get both albums in a double CD set. There are still bands today that grab influence from that era of music and will continue to do so for as long as I live because thats where it all stems from, all these genres of music, from thrash, to death, to black, to God knows what else, this movement needs the credit it deserves! Since there was such a big boom of bands that came out of that movement, a TON of bands fell beneath the cracks and became obscure quickly. Theres still mountain of heavy metal that needs to be kept alive and heard from old to new metal heads. Here we are today with a perfect example of an amazing band that not only fell beneath the cracks, but really never even put out an album, just a couple of demo tapes before they went on to become a really good Thrash metal band called BLOOD MONEY. They are arguably one of the best 80s Thrash bands to come out of the U.K. WOLFBANE, now lets get down to business here. Think early PRIEST and BLACK SABBATH mixed with PAGAN ALTAR styled vocals and a sprinkle of RUSH and ALICE COOPER for good measure and somewhere in that mess of great bands lies the sound of WOLFBANE. This is one of the very best obscure gems to ever be released from this movement and because the band never recorded an album, and they really didnt keep much memorabilia from those days. Here youre going to get the first 2 demo tapes from 1981 and 1982 re-mastered and this is all the essential material you need.
