ALCATRAZ - VAMPIRE STATE BUILDING
Official reissue of this German rock classic album from 1971 by Hamburg quintet Alcatraz, coming with an additional track, recorded in 1972 at the Windrose Dumont studio in Hamburg. Alcatraz largely instrumental music was related to Miles Davis "In A Silent Way", early King Crimson and Soft Machine. Most successful was the 12 minutes "Simply Headphone Mind". The 13 minutes title track was a long improvisation with lots of fuzz guitar. According to Dag Erik Asbjornsen "Vampire State Building" is currently one of the most intensive German albums in the jazz-rock genre, making full use of the dynamic sound range (and with that special krautrock feel). The Freeman brothers (The crack in the cosmic egg) write that the music features fuzzed guitars and effects overdose in a heavy bluesy over-the-top Krautrock akin to Frumpy and Nosferatu. Ten years after the release of the CD-Version (Long Hair, LHC 14) the recordings were newly remastered from the original master tapes for this vinyl-version. LP comes with exact reproduction of original album sleeve and additional insert with extra photos and band story. A masterpiece! |

This is the 2nd album of one of the best German Krautrock/symphonic groups, Pell Mell (1st album "Marburg", 1972 also on Long Hair, LHC 104), originally released in 1973 on Philips. "From The New World", similar to "Marburg", was a combination of psychedelic and progressive sounds. Expanding the line-up with an extra keyboard player, gave Thomas Schmitt more room with his violin and "From The New World" saw them move to directly adapting classical works, not least a lengthy and radical rock rewrite of the "New World Symphony", by Anton Dvorak, hinting at instrumental Curved Air. Pell Mells sound was characterized by colorful, swirling Hammond organ, a violin played with great virtuosity, mellotron, recorder and some guitar. Album comes with an exact reproduction of the original cover and with insert including band story and never seen before photos. The music was mastered from the original master tapes. A must have! |

DAVEY, ALAN - CYBER TOOTH
Cyber Tooth is the latest solo album by ex-Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey who nowadays is mostly doing vocals and bass in his own Gunslinger band. The man has written all the songs and he also does all the instruments and vocals. The bit jazzy, more mainstream tones that were already presented on his previous album are now included maybe even a bit stronger but luckily theres still lots of stuff that Alan does the best: heavy, psychedelic space rock as well as floating, cosmic ambient! A sort of a theme of the album seems to be internet and virtual reality. The album that was released early this year has 11 tracks on it. First we get to hear the quite interesting "The Future Is Us (Viral Messiah)" that, apart from the harder rocking solo part towards the end, could almost be Radioheads recent stuff. Its a great track, though! "Boot Killer" is a pretty tightly rocking instrumental that sort of reminds me of some of the more metallic songs that Alan wrote for Hawkwind. "Metamorphic Code" is a small-scale, peaceful ambient piece and the soft and modern-sounding "Harmonic Orgone" could well be lifted from a David Lynch movie. "Doomjuice (Its Coming)" is dark and experimental electronic instrumental music that again brings to mind Radiohead a bit. Some new sounds by Alan. The title track "Cyber Tooth" rocks in the familiar way again with a heavy touch reinforced by the keyboards and this is one of the best numbers on the album. "Rootkit" is a rather laid-back instrumental that does grow a little towards the end. The song that rocks hardest is the excellent space rock boogie "Fractal Eyes" that is perhaps my favorite on this CD. "All Over the Place" is a versatile and interesting track that only has a little bit of robotic vocals on it. The albums longest cut is the over 6-minute instrumental "Polymorphic Code" that has some Gong styled groovy jazzy vibe and this is good stuff! The last track "Bio Scan" finishes off the album with sci-fi spirited, exciting boogie. And it is of course always a great pleasure to hear Alan play his bass. |

A release of rare mod sounds from the mid '60s! The Frays were a UK R&B-combo. Previously known as The Sneekers, they had a Shel Talmy produced single on Columbia in '64. In 1965 they changed their name to The Frays and recorded a 12-track LP at the Marquee studio in Wardour Street, London. Unfortunately the album wasn't issued at the time, since the single off the album ('Walk On' b/w Keep Me Covered', put out by Decca) didn't chart. But had this Frays LP been issued at the time, it would definitely have stood shoulder to shoulder with the great British R&B albums of the era. Now, at long last, The Frays and their album '90 Wardour Street' can be appreciated as the best in British R&B. |

Three Minute Tease is the new band formed by eternally culty Californian Anton Barbeau, and former SOFT BOYS / ROBYN HITCHCOCK members Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor. Their debut album features guest contributions by THE BEVIS FROND'S Nick Saloman, and STORNOWAY. The record covers quite a musical range within a psychedelic-pop circle. Opening track "Love Is Onion" bares its teeth to show an undying love for the history of pop itself, complete with Mellotrons, Minimoogs, and a guest-star display of the Bevis Frond's Nick Saloman on lead guitar. The next track however, "Milko II,"is just Ant, Andy and Morris playing a very, very sad song. There's the mini spacerock epic "These Alien Angels" and there's even a proper and official power ballad with "Up on the Moon". Oxford's Stornoway make an appearance on the song "Dust Beneath My Wings," and StornoJon plays cello on there as well. |
