0370505 2xLP LPS 108 4040824082321 WAH WAH	PRINCESS FLOWER & THE MOON RAYS - DREAMING THE MAGIC OF YOUR MAYA Recorded in 1968 and issued as a very limited run private pressing this psychedelic raga freak-out is the brainchild of multi disciplinar artist Loren Standlee plus his partner Ziska with the cooperation of Daevid Allen and Gilli Smith in what was an early incarnation of Gong. Loren and Ziska had been involved with the crowd of avantgardist free thinkers that settled in Formentera in the sixties, and back home in N.Y. they had also been connected to experimentalists such as Angus Maclise, Marian Zazeela, Tony Conrad, Henry Flynt, Pandit Pran Nath, a.o. This bizarre selection of sounds was the brainchild of Loren Standlee and Ziska and features a very early Gong incarnation. Loren Standlee and Ziska were among the "Formentera" (small Island near Ibiza, Spain) visionary poets, musicians and psychedelic researchers in the early sixties. In Paris, they began hand-painting silk and designing clothes for many of the rock luminaries of the time, among them The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, as well as haute couture designers in Paris and London. They met Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth at a poetry reading where Loren was playing Alto Flute and Ziska was creating vocal sounds to intermix with the flute. They began playing together as a group utilizing Daevids Italian echo chambers and soon they had a two-night-a-week gig playing at the Vielle Grille, an avant guard club in Paris where you might hear Ornette Coleman playing upstairs or see Yoko Ono performing in a sack on stage Two of the tracks on the bonus LP, feature the line-up of Loren, Ziska and Raj Samyana, which is basically The Universal Mutant Repertory Company minus Angus Maclise and his wife Hetty. The Universal Mutant Repertory Company are most known as a group that included drummer Angus MacLise, multimedia avant-gardist who was the original drummer of the Velvet Underground. The Company were formed in the late 1960s, and included MacLise, his wife Hetty MacLise (on organ, tanpura, and probably other instruments), Loren Standlee (alto flute), Ziska Baum (Indian dulcimer), and Raja Samyana (guitar). The Universal Mutant Repertory Company was a name devised by filmmaker Ira Cohen, to describe the people appearing in his film Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda. All of the musicians did an improvised soundtrack to that film at St. Mark's Church in New York. A 39-minute tape of the performance, used as the title track, formed the core of the Angus MacLise retrospective CD collection The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda. On this piece, the group played drone-trance music propelled by MacLise's charged hand drumming, given extra psychedelic coating by the employment of four microphones, each run through an echo chamber. Loren Standlee recalled in The Wire magazine that the musicians would play together for as long as eleven hours straight. An original copy would cost you a small fortune (raising over 4 digits!), but heres at last an accurate vinyl reissue that comes complete with liner notes plus an amazing poster of one of Loren Standlees psychedelic collages plus an extra LP with previously unreleased studio material. Like the previous record, this was the music for a Norbert Schmucki ballet "Ergonia", premiered at Festival D'Avignon 1971, and featured top French players of the era like Janick Top on bass. Oozing darkness and mystery, Wakhevitch displays a wide array of mind-bending tricks that take the listener to a wild and trippy ride into occult zones starting from the spoken word passages and open drum break of "Aimantation" to the psyched-up delirium of "Sang Poupree". Elsewhere delirious acid passages, hypnotic bass riffing, stoned funk beats, wild free-rock freak outs, avant-garde orchestral drama, dubbed-out passages and Wakhevitch trade-mark collage and sound manipulation make up to a really unique listening experience that submerges and puzzles the unexpecting listener. A psychedelic kaleidoscope full of intense moods, from stoned to thrilling drama, from medidative and mystical ritual trance to way out tape and synth manipulation that in spite of all contrast, holds together well - not unlike the similar collaged, contrasting and now much revered opus "L'Enfant Assasin Des Mouches" by Jean Claude Vannier or some of Faust's work. Originally released by Pathe Marconi in 1972, it has become over the years Wakhevitch's hardest to find album and one that's been chased also because of his striking cover-art, made by no-other than Philippe Druillet, one of the top exponents of french 70's sci-fi comics school together with the great Jean Henri Gaston (better known as Moebius) which revolved around the seminal Metal Hurlant magazine. Elsewhere, menacing and majestic spoken word passages open us the doors to the netherworld, leading you into an esoteric sound ritual that sounds spooky, virulent, powerful, droning, entrancing and mystical at the same time. Again Wakhevitch brings together disparate elements, bridging apparently unrelated musical forms and integrate them in order to deliver another unique work that sounds strangely prescient and recalling at the same time works from Mort Garson (Black Mass), Ruth White (Flowers Of Evil), Terry Riley (Surgery Persian Dervishes), Stockhausen (Stimmung), Tangerine Dream (Zeit) or early Klaus Schulze (Irrlicht). An unlikely mixture of 20th century classical avant-garde, both orchestral and electronic and psychedelic rock courtesy of French psych-prog band Triangle. A strong piece which pairs epic choral parts with Wakhevitch's taped electronics and Triangle's hypnotic jamming to form, in typical Wakevitch occult fashion, an ode to man's relationship with sound forces with the composer acting as a medium between the magical forces of sound and listener. The text inside the wonderul red gatefold cover holds some keys to the composer's universe, mentions to early 20th russian mystic / thinker Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff and also Kabbalistic and Alchemistic traditions are coupled by Wakhevitch's vision of a cosmic art for the 20th century, aligning himself to similar efforts by William Sheller and Guy Skornik. One of the finest groups to sign to the legendary VERTIGO label in 1969, CRESSIDAs unique Progressive Rock style earned them a loyal fan base in the early 1970s, with their legend growing over the ensuing decades and their followers growing, with notable aficionados including MICHEAL AKERFELDT of the band OPETH. The roots of Cressida were sown in March 1968, when guitarist John Heyworth answered an advertisement in Melody Maker, and later travelled to London to join The Dominators. With vocalist Angus Cullen he settled down to some serious writing, eventually welcoming bassist Kevin McCarthy and drummer Iain Clark to the fold and now calling themselves Charge. In 1969, shortly after returning from a German tour, the band's organist Lol Coker decided to leave, and moved back to Liverpool to marry his Swiss girlfriend and take over his father's business. He had stayed just long enough to play on the band's first demo, which got them a recording contract with Vertigo Records. Peter Jennings then joined. At this point the band settled on the name Cressida. Their first gigs as Cressida were in Germany, including the Star-Club in Hamburg sharing the bill with Colosseum and East Of Eden, in the Autumn of 1969. The bands self-titled debut album was recorded at Wessex Studios with Ossie Byrne producing, and was one of the earliest releases on Vertigo. Cressida went through a difficult phase when Heyworth was forced to leave in early 1970. He was replaced by John Culley. The new line-up recorded Cressida's second LP, Asylum, later in 1970 (again with Byrne producing, and with orchestral arrangements by Graeme Hall), but it was released posthumously in 1971, the band having broken up in September 1970. Noted jazz flautist Harold McNair guested on the song "Lisa" from the album. Heyworth sadly died in January 2010, but in 2011, three of the four surviving original members of the band, Angus Cullen, Iain Clark, and Kevin McCarthy got together again with Peter Jennings. Playing with such Medway notables as Graham Day, Billy Childish and James Taylor, his reputation was as the reliable sideman for more flamboyant figures. After finally realising that songwriting wasn't one of the dark arts, he recruited some of Medway's least annoying musicians and formed The Galileo 7 to play some of the songs he had been storing up for a few years. The first female singer of the early rock and roll era, Wanda was encouraged to try rock and roll by Elvis Presley himself. It was 1955 when Wanda met him during the "Ozark Jubilee," a country tour through the south. She didn't think she had the voice for it, but he disagreed. He even recommended some songs for her. At first she was reluctant, but she signed a recording contract with Capitol and decided to give it a try. During the next few years, Wanda produced numerous examples of raw, prototypical rock & roll. The most distinctive aspect was her voice. She developed a wild, growling sound that at times sounds possessed or strangely alien, capable of going from sweet innocence to hellcat at the push of a button. Originally released in 1959 during the 'Queen of Rockabilly's' prime at Capitol Records, "There's A Party Goin' On" features a solid collection of songs in tune with the title track as well as covers of a handful of early rock hits such as "Tweedlee Dee" and "Kansas City." The set is highlighted by the staggering guitar playing of Roy Clark as exemplified on the the standout cut "Hard Headed Woman." It may be surprising that the Beatles were not the first British rock act to top the charts with one of their own compositions: that honor goes to Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, whose No. 1 "Shakin All Over" is also the first british-penned rock and roll hit toever reach US top 20. Johnny, who wore an eye patch and calf lenght cowboy boots on stage to enhance his pirate image, was offered a contract by HMV in 1959 to record their first single: that "Please Don't Touch" that 22 years later revisited the UK charts by heavy metal heroes Motorhead & Girlschool. Unfortunately, like many other labels of that era, EMI was never sure how best to deal with rock & roll success and tough the group was among the finest rock combos of the early '60s, with a wild stage act that had them playing in pirate regalia, it never had enough consistent chart success to put it back in the top ranks of Britain's rock hierarchy, though they received a great deal of respect from the younger generation of rock & rollers. "Runaway", a forlorn tale of lost love, its rippling piano accompaninment driven by guitar, saxophone and bass rhythm section, guaranteed him a place in the annals of rocknroll. While his vocal style, which veered from silky smooth to a wicked rasp before taking off into a soaring falsetto, became his trump card, Runaway also features a surreal, unearthly electronic keyboard solo that gave this single a unique flavour. But there's way more here to appreciate: the opening track "Misery," a catchy Doc Pomus/Mort Shuman number that shows off Shannon in the same pained, romantic mode as "Runaway," "Jody", "Day Dreams" and "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame" (made world famous just a few month's later by the almighty Elvis Presley!) are just a few of the numerous cuts included in an album the played a sole part in the transition from rock and roll to 60's pop music. Occasionally, objects make it to the museum by way of the dump. The record you are holding is one of those objects. With the exception of two songs that already came out on a 45, the material on this disk was destined to remain in the trash. In 1971, a very few copies were made on acetate in an attempt to attract the interest of record labels. One was miraculously found in July, 2010 in a Paris garbage dump (quai d'Issy). In the mid-60s, Jean-Pierre MIROUZE was hired to work on Jean-Christophe Avertys very popular and very "Pop" program "Dim Dam Dom." Mirouze was in charge of the shows soundtrack. In 1971, Hervé Lamarre, who had just finished shooting the film "Le Mariage Collectif" in Sweden, thought of using the "Dim Dam Dom" team to create the musical score for his film. This film, which claims to try to justify open relationships and sexual freedom, is actually a botched second-rate picture that combines evocations of the Beat Generation, hippie idealism and softcore nudity, in a work that is - quite frankly - uninteresting. Jean-Pierre Mirouze, because of his association with "Dim Dam Dom," was expected to bring a trendy touch to the project. Seeking to round out funding for what was, in essence, a commercial job, Mirouze went to Bagatelle, a Paris publisher specializing in film music, among other genres. While he was there, he played the melody of "Together" for them. These few notes were enough to convince the publisher to finance the recording of the soundtrack. The recording was wrapped up in a week by a top-flight group of musicians, including Jean-Pierre Sabar, a talented organist who would be instrumental in the future success of the song "Sexopolis." Nine tracks were produced during these sessions. Bagatelle then started looking for a record label to issue the soundtrack album. In an attempt to interest record companies, a handful of test pressings were made, solely in the form of acetates. The songs on this album come from one of these acetates, found, in July, 2010, in a garbage dump. We could not have invented a story this strange. But let's get back to the film. It turned out to be a failure, and Bagatelle had a difficult time selling the soundtrack project. Finally, AZ (a French label) agreed to put out a 45 with "Together" on side A, billed as the "hit" from the film, and "Sexopolis" on the B side as an instrumental filler. In our modern world, everything ends up - or will end up - in the garbage dump or in a museum. Occasionally, objects make it to the museum by way of the dump. The record you are holding is one of those objects. With the exception of two songs that already came out on a 45, the material on this disk was destined to remain in the trash. In 1971, a very few copies were made on acetate in an attempt to attract the interest of record labels. One was miraculously found in July, 2010 in a Paris garbage dump (quai d'Issy). In the mid-60s, Jean-Pierre MIROUZE was hired to work on Jean-Christophe Avertys very popular and very "Pop" program "Dim Dam Dom." Mirouze was in charge of the shows soundtrack. In 1971, Hervé Lamarre, who had just finished shooting the film "Le Mariage Collectif" in Sweden, thought of using the "Dim Dam Dom" team to create the musical score for his film. This film, which claims to try to justify open relationships and sexual freedom, is actually a botched second-rate picture that combines evocations of the Beat Generation, hippie idealism and softcore nudity, in a work that is - quite frankly - uninteresting. Jean-Pierre Mirouze, because of his association with "Dim Dam Dom," was expected to bring a trendy touch to the project. Seeking to round out funding for what was, in essence, a commercial job, Mirouze went to Bagatelle, a Paris publisher specializing in film music, among other genres. While he was there, he played the melody of "Together" for them. These few notes were enough to convince the publisher to finance the recording of the soundtrack. Soundway present a slice of raw Trinidad carnival roots with a progressive twist, courtesy of one of the islands most original and forward thinking musical minds of the post war period. On the flip highlife-techno pioneer DrumTalk morphs it into a dark and twisted electro-tropical groove dripping with rolling distorted synth-lines and filtered vocals. Lancelot Layne was born and raised in Gonzales, Trinidad - a village near Port of Spain. He was one of the most respected of Trinidad's late 20th century musicians - playing shows and giving lectures at music institutions and universities across the globe. Layne's travels took him to Africa many times and he incorporated many aspects of highlife and other African rhythms into his music. Layne's impact on the Trinidadian sound was huge and most credit him as being the originator of rapso - a uniquely Trinidadian sound often described as a fusion of Trinidadian soca and American hip-hop that grew out of the unrest of the 1970s. Not unlike a Caribbean version of Gil Scott-Heron, Laynes early recordings were way ahead of their time mixing social commentary with calypso, Africanism and an upfront lyrical style. DrumTalk is a producer and DJ from Clapton, East London, fast becoming a leading light in the tropical remix scene. Equal parts techno, house, highlife and soukous, his music sits on the fault-line between the nightlife of East London and the sounds and rhythms of South and West Africa.

With an estimate of 500.000 inhabitants Surinam has a lively music scene. Although Surinam is a relatively unknown country, it has a strong influence on the Netherlands where many of the Surinam people have been living since a couple of decades ago. The music from the Surinam is mainly known for its kaseko (which evolved out of the traditional Kawina music) and soul music, but the Surinamese have also been active in other genres such as pop, funk & jazz. Most of the Surinamese music is hard to come by, and especially its funk is rare. Because its that rare, you can wonder how much of it has been made. The occasional funk tracks pop up on a kaseko or soul album, but full funk albums are difficult to locate. Our aim is to document these lost gems: dancefloor tracks which meet the international standard of good dance music. The drive to discover something new has brought us to Surinam and while diggin through these records we found a bunch of crossover tunes resulting in this specialized boogie funk compilation. The SURINAM! compilation features 10 rare tracks within the Surinamese boogie funk genre. Key players from the 76-83 era such as Solat, Sumy, Erwin Bouterse, Reingoud and Thunderstorm are all included! George Jackson is one of the great writers of Southern soul and this volume includes the original versions of classic hits written for, among others, Wilson Pickett (Mini Skirt Minnie and more), Candi Staton - (Im Just A Prisoner), Bettye Swann (Victim Of A Foolish Heart, later a hit for Joss Stone). On hearing George Jackson's demos for him, Wilson Pickett told Atlantic Records Jerry Wexler to sign Jackson as an artist as he was a star in the waiting. Such was the depth and quality of his work that there are songs that have not been issued until now. I Lived Through A Losing Battle is a song that plunders the depths of despair; there is the simply stunning I Bit Off More Than I Can Chew and the up-tempo Soul Lovin' and It's Not Safe To Mess On Me. On hearing I am confident several of these will now be classed as Southern soul classics. We were granted a rare interview with George Jackson while researching the CDs. He reflects on his time at Fame; the artists he worked with and why he didn't become a successful recording artist. The music from the Surinam is mainly known for its kaseko (which evolved out of the traditional Kawina music) and soul music, but the Surinamese have also been active in other genres such as pop, funk & jazz. Most of the Surinamese music is hard to come by, and especially its funk is rare. Because its that rare, you can wonder how much of it has been made. The occasional funk tracks pop up on a kaseko or soul album, but full funk albums are difficult to locate. Our aim is to document these lost gems: dancefloor tracks which meet the international standard of good dance music. The drive to discover something new has brought us to Surinam and while diggin through these records we found a bunch of crossover tunes resulting in this specialized boogie funk compilation. The SURINAM! compilation features 10 rare tracks within the Surinamese boogie funk genre. Key players from the 76-83 era such as Solat, Sumy, Erwin Bouterse, Reingoud and Thunderstorm are all included! The compilation also features extensive liner notes containing in-depth information on all the artists of the compilation. This album will be volume one in the Surinam! series. Neil Ardley was offered the leadership of the seminal New Jazz Orchestra in 1964. Under his direction the Orchestra moved though different styles and changes of personnel, bringing in musicians such as Mike Gibbs (trombone), Harry Beckett and Henry Lowther (trumpets) or even Jack Bruce (bass), some of them also contributed with the writing of some original compositions, making the NJO the root from which the UK's 70's jazz scene was to blossom. By 1972 the NJO was already defunct, but his legacy remained in the works of its members. Ardley's 'A Symphony Of Amaranths' is a perfect example of what was boiling in the UK jazz scene. It was Ardleys tribute to his idols Duke Ellington and Gil Evans, and featured the skills of some great musicians of the scene including Don Rendell, Stan Tracey, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett, Jeff Clyne & Jon Hiseman. James recorded under the Aphex Twin moniker and marks the end of his initial analog era. Its also the crowning achievement in the Aphex Twin canon. Veering from his previous acid house, ambient and general techno undertakings, James builds compositions out of lengthy and intricate drum machine loops, elaborately layered analog synths and intermittent string pieces. The final product comes off like a Replicant dance-party. Never one to take his art too seriously, James infuses ...I Care Because You Do with in-jokes and innuendos. "Ventolin," named after an asthma medicine, is one of the harshest tracks on the album and features a high-pitch frequency that mimics symptoms of tinnitus; "Alberto Balsalm" is named for a British line of hair care products; "Come On You Slags" samples dialog from a pornographic film. Additionally, several of the song titles are anagrams: Aphex Twin is reworked as "Wax the Nip", The Aphex Twin morphs into "The Waxen Pith," "Wet Tip Hen Ax," and "Next Heap With," and Richard David James becomes "Acrid Avid Jam Shred." ...I Care Because You Dos equal infatuation with hip-hop rhythms and melodic counterpoint provides an effective bridge between his pioneering early releases and the cunning explorations of his later work. As much as the front cover self-portrait captures a snapshot of the artists own image, the music inside provides a glimpse of an artist on the cusp of an invigorating new period of sound experimentation, but still producing his unique blend of melancholy and aggression at an elite level. Generally seen as one of the quintessential IDM releases of all time (and once named by Q Magazine as one of the top 20 loudest albums of all time), the album finds a middle ground between Phillip Glass and the Wu-Tang Clan. It was Jamess fourth and most widely popular full-length to date upon its original 1996 release, and reinvented the artist as a commanding influence on like-minded groups such as Radiohead who were tiring of the guitar / bass / drums format. By 1975 they were jamming together, abusing controlled substances, and listening closely to Lee Perry, Pere Ubu, and the singles coming out of New York and London. A visit to a Bloomington, Indiana, basement to see MX-80 Sound was pivotal, as were debut LPs from The Ramones and The Patti Smith Group. In the winter of 1976, local guerilla art collective We're Just Like You put on a show at the university and needed a band. With the addition of Mikes high-school friend Bob Cotter on bass and a few weeks of rehearsals, Mike, Curt, and Byron formed Ed Davis, a name chosen because it meant nothing and revealed nothing. The group stayed together after the show and slowly built a following in Cincinnati clubs, eventually playing a series of legendary parties in their downtown loft. In '78 the band cut a single, played on WAIF-FM, opened for The Patti Smith Group at Bogart's, and lost guitarist Byron, who moved to NYC. Ed soldiered on for another year with new vocalist and pianist Fran Slater; bassist Bob switched to guitar; and Mike picked up the bass. 0348139 LP RUR 62 RAVE UP	SAUCERS/ALLIES - SPLIT LP East Bay Punks-From the Streets of Berkeley 1978-81. Disillusionment with the "mellow 70's" was turning to rage as the US waged a proxy war in Central America, and San Francisco ignited into fiery riots after the assassination of its mayor and first openly gay city council member. The Saucers reflected these times with caustic humor and impassioned social commentary. In 1980, the band after the departure of first keyboard player, Joey Michaels, renamed themselves The Allies, adding dynamic lead guitarist Craig Magee, formerly with Dyan Diamond (Runaways). With the addition of Magee, the band pivoted from the Saucers' Farfisa-dominated garage punk to a more muscular, guitar-driven sound. Local music producer and KALX engineer Terry Hammer worked behind the scenes to get both bands into the studio, with varied results, on display here. He also recorded a number of live shows for the two groups, and it's mostly thanks to his efforts that this music survives today. 0351727 LP EPS 4 RAVE UP	WASPS - THISWASPUNK Formed in February 1976 The Wasps were one of Londons earliest punk bands. They were regulars at The Roxy, The Bridge House etc. and soon built a large following. In November 1977 their first single Teenage Treats was released on the 4-Play label. Reviewed in the NME as "great single" by Bob Geldof, the single is a marvellous example of 77 punk rock and now highly collectable. A month later, The Wasps appeared on the Live At The Vortex album. Recorded in October 77 their track Cant Wait Till 78 was chosen as the lead track for a split single with Mean Streets who included a young Gary Numan! In mid 78 the band played a gig at The Bells in Kings Cross, London. During their set a fan was set upon by over zealous bouncers who thought he'd let off a firework, beat him up and he consequently died. Their snd 7" Rubber Cars was released to much acclaim and a TV company wanted to make an animated series based upon the band. Suddenly The Wasps were hot property and former managers filed writs causing RCA to pull the plug on Rubber Cars, despite it being RCAs biggest selling single of the week! Four of them to be precise, with a total runtime over 47 minutes. The album is entirely instrumental, as many post-metal and drone doom bands tend toward vocal minimalism. But despite that self-imposed handicap, the music is emotionally involving and extremely well-written. The emotions touched on are what you might expect from a band called Year of No Light, so it's dark, but that heavy sludge makes it feel good to listen to nonetheless. The first half of the album is just what you'd expect from the sludge/drone/post-doom formula, and it's done well. But the second half gets even better. "Hirophante" has a section where all the instruments go faster just to mix things up, and album closer "Abbesse" has a section where only the drums go faster while the rest is moving slow.
