0374676 LP LHC 122 4035177001228 LONGHAIR	ALCATRAZ - VAMPIRE STATE BUILDING Official reissue of this German rock classic album from 1971 by Hamburg quintet Alcatraz, coming with an additional track, recorded in 1972 at the Windrose Dumont studio in Hamburg. Alcatraz largely instrumental music was related to Miles Davis "In A Silent Way", early King Crimson and Soft Machine. Most successful was the 12 minutes "Simply Headphone Mind". The 13 minutes title track was a long improvisation with lots of fuzz guitar. According to Dag Erik Asbjornsen "Vampire State Building" is currently one of the most intensive German albums in the jazz-rock genre, making full use of the dynamic sound range (and with that special krautrock feel). The Freeman brothers (The crack in the cosmic egg) write that the music features fuzzed guitars and effects overdose in a heavy bluesy over-the-top Krautrock akin to Frumpy and Nosferatu. Ten years after the release of the CD-Version (Long Hair, LHC 14) the recordings were newly remastered from the original master tapes for this vinyl-version. This is the second previously unreleased album by the Dutch psychedelic hard rock band Cosmic Dealer. Their first album "Crystallization" from 1971 is an outstanding and rare masterpiece for all psych collectors and for sure one of the best Euro-Underground rock albums of the 70s. In 1971 the band was shortly disband but found together in 1973 with a few line-up changes but kept the same musical intention: heavy psychedelic, progressive and guitar driven hard rock, with catchy song writing, a few US-Westcoast flashes but also extended instrumental jam excursions. This album contains 6 songs which were recorded in 1973, plus 3 demos from 1971 and as bonus youll find 7"EP with 4 live cuts (25 mins) and was recorded in 1971, including the title track from their debut Crystallization. "From The New World", similar to "Marburg", was a combination of psychedelic and progressive sounds. Expanding the line-up with an extra keyboard player, gave Thomas Schmitt more room with his violin and "From The New World" saw them move to directly adapting classical works, not least a lengthy and radical rock rewrite of the "New World Symphony", by Anton Dvorak, hinting at instrumental Curved Air. Pell Mells sound was characterized by colorful, swirling Hammond organ, a violin played with great virtuosity, mellotron, recorder and some guitar. Formed in Yeovil, Somerset in 1979 the band soon spent their time permanently on the road in a convoy of trucks before squatting in Brougham Road, Hackney - a street of houses that accommodated many punk and counter-culture types. Until their demise in 1983 they remained an integral part and a huge influence on the anarcho, traveller and free festival scenes. One could hardly not see in Don Preston a key musician within Frank Zappa's oeuvre. He is not only that, but his presence has marked The Mothers' major records from 1966 to 1974. His touch was already there before the arrival of Ian Underwood, and it continued after Ian left. You all remember King Kong (its magnificence as interpreted by Dom DeWild) from the second Uncle Meat suite. A certain form of jubilation emanates from this track, thanks to Preston's fluid style and lightly astringent tone on the Moog synthesizer - that instrument never sounded quite like that before or after. This might have to do with his double training, his twin interests, since he had been simultaneously working with Gil Evans and listening intensely to Luciano Berio, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Tod Dockstader. Immersed in jazz music, he was imagining secret ties with the nascent electronic music. In the mid-'60s, Preston started developing an electronic instrument, using a home-made synthesizer and a series of oscillators and filters. Out of this instrument came Electronic (1967), his first piece. Two years later, he became a close friend of Robert Moog, and their discussions gave birth to a number of applications in relation with the flexibility of the instrument. Nowadays, you can't mention the Mini-Moog without thinking of Preston. Bob Moog himself said about his solo in Waka Jawaka: "That's impossible. You can't do that on a Moog." Lead by vibest DJ Bonebrake (known for his drumming in the seminal punk band, X), ORCHESTRA SUPERSTRING is an ensemble of Los Angeles-based veteran musicians who plays an exotic, hypnotic blend of Afro-Cuban, Latin Jazz and other world music. Their sound is purely instrumental, intimate, seductive, dimensional and brings to mind a dimly lit South American dance hall, or something you might hear in a Lynch film filtered through the sounds of a 1950s film noir style Mambo session with an edge from a sort of spooky and distorted hollow-body guitar not unlike late 60s Robert Fripp. Its all very tasty and atmospheric. Kalopia is their first vinyl release and contains the best tracks from their two Dionysus CDs Orchestra Superstring and Easy. This album was cut on a vintage Scully lathe using a Westrex 3D stereo cutting head.

Johnny Ace, one of R&B's brightest but most short-lived supernovas, is celebrated on Ace's Wild!, two discs roping together all his solo singles along with sublime piano sessions for the likes of B.B. King and Bobby "Blue" Bland. Compiled and annotated in intricate detail by Dave Penny, the set is high on the lower elements of the battered soul, running the gamut from yearning to regret, highlights including his inimitable grasp of the heart-ballad on hits including "My Song", "The Clock" and "Please Forgive Me", but also jumping R&B outings such as "Never Let Me Go". Ace carried all the credentials of a short-lived R&B legend, from lucky studio break leading to huge hit debut, success accompanied by ruthless music business skulduggery, escalating alcohol relieving pressure and dramatically tragic death, in this case dressing room jinx with a pistol resulting in fatal Russian roulette-style death on Christmas Day, 1954. Born in 1929 to a musical family in South Memphis, John Marshall Junior taught himself to play piano at home after returning from service in World War Two. By the end of the decade, he was playing sessions for B.B. King, Earl Forest and Bobby "Blue" Bland, some chance fooling on the piano at a session resulting in his first single for David Mattis' Duke label. "My Song" subsequently spent nine weeks on top of the R&B charts in late 1952. Mattis was then systematically ousted, seeing both his Duke label and star artist hijacked by heavyweight music mogul Don Robey. A string of hits ensued, including "Cross My Heart", "The Clock", "Saving My Love For You", "Please Forgive Me" and "Never Let Me Go", Ace continuing to play blues sessions, while Robey whisked him to L.A. to plant him over the more sophisticated backdrops of the Johnny Otis and Johnny Board orchestras. By 1954, the pressure was getting to him as recording sessions were fitted around gruelling touring (often supported by Big Mama Thornton, their rare duet on "Yes, Baby" also included on this compilation). Increasingly cushioned by alcohol and prone to depression, Ace accidentally shot himself in the head while fooling with a gun in the dressing room at a Christmas day show in Houston. Robey swiftly cashed in with what became one of Ace's biggest hits; the heavenly "Pledging My Love", assuring posthumous immortality, further bolstered by tribute singles from the likes of Johnny Fuller, Frankie Ervin, Varetta Dillard, the Rovers and Five Wings; featured here as bonus tracks, providing a poignant finale. Johnny Ace was a monumental talent dealt the worst hand imaginable much too soon. He is a fine lyrical poet, honest in his vocal delivery and song writing. His occasionally controversial social and political commentary is both adored and admired by his fans and peers alike. A chance meeting between Necessary Mayhem producer, Curtis Lynch, and Macka B at Peckings Record shop in London sparked the beginning of a musical relationship, starting with the recording of Our Music - one of the biggest NM releases of 2011. Rasta Soldier is a six-track mini-album that captures Macka B at his best. Staying true to his style, Macka B tells a variety of important stories through his songs. The album begins with Macka B defending his Old Fashioned style, telling us hes just staying true to himself and not changing his ways. He takes on modernities such as Twitter, using his humorous and intelligent expression. Innocent Life takes on the issue of one person taking another person's life. Macka B's direct lyrics tell us that your profession, race etc. is no excuse for taking the life of an innocent person. The autobiographical, Never Leave My Culture, gives you an insight into how long Macka B has been in the industry, as well as his passion for standing up for cultural principles in his songs against everything else. The next track takes on the controversial issue of racism in football, in a true, uncompromising style. In this catchy, direct track Macka B tells us that football is an international sport and that any racism is truly Outta Order. Our Music is a tune we are sure many can relate to - an anthem for all those who have been told to turn their music down. This is a message to those who may have complained about his loud music, saying, he will compromise but he's not being anti-social. If you want to hear, what bass can really do, he will take you to a dance a show you! Finally the title track is a gem, Rasta Soldier. All we need to do it let the lyrics do the talking. "Fighting for truths and rights/ Rastafari soldier/ and we never give up the fight." Curtis Lynch has spared nothing in production of this album. Every part of his producing skills come together. This is partially because he recorded so prolifically, perhaps most notably with a superlative quintet he formed with drummer Max Roach in 1954-widely considered the gold standard in hard bop. This historic album, recorded live at two separate dates played at Gene Normans Crescendo nightclub in L.A. in April and May of 1954, represents some of the quintets earliest recordings. The first four tracks (side A) actually feature a seldom heard early line-up that included Teddy Edwards on tenor sax, Carl Perkins on piano and George Bledsoe on bass, while the classic quintet line-up-featuring Harold Land on tenor sax, Richard Powell on piano and George Morrow on bass-can be heard on side B. Between their 2nd album Au Coeur de Paris and Wamato is cool 30 years but things move slowly in Guinea and, as is the way of these things, there have been retirements and deaths, notably of original saxophonist Fatou Soumah and 'La Reine des Amazones', guitarist Nyepou Haba. But Les Amazones are nothing if not tenecious and bolstered by new blood and inder the direction of bassplayer Commandant Salematou Diallo, the surviving members took the long mini-bus trek from Conakry in Guinea to Bamako in Mali, there to lay down their guns and record in the same studio as Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare and many more. This solo album does nothing to diminish her reputation. While the heart of her sound is rooted in the Congo, as it should be, this offers something a little modern in Souzy Kasseya's production, which has something of a widescreen quality. There's a little more hip-hop in the rhythm at times, and Bel herself has a looser rein to soar, which she takes at times, flying above the music. The only real letdown is the keyboard, which occasionally descends into an '80s cheesiness (perhaps not too astonishing, since that was the decade of Bel's greatest success. IRM - INDICATIONS OF NIGREDO
On the theme of alchemy and the topics of shame vs. bodily self infliction, IRM makes way for a new start after the inspired "Virgin Mind" double-disc set from 2005. These are new recordings with the new member Mikael Oretoft joining on bass. Two long tracks - the first being an intense up-building, deep pulsating number with both spoken and rough vocals, volcanic exaggerated bass noise and doom-laden atmosphere. The second more of an aftermath with its downspiralling, almost dreamy character of echoing tones, ripping clangs and chilling audio-schmerz. In total over 23 minutes of music in a glossy colour sleeve with gross artwork and a small insert. Edition of 500 copies.
