In their relatively short lifespan, the visionary Blues Project -which included fabled guitar master Danny Kalb and legendary keyboardist Al Kooper- pioneered a dynamic fusion of blues, folk-rock, psychedelia and improvisational instrumentals. Far ahead of its time, the Blues Project fine-tuned their eclecticism and built their reputation through their electrifying live shows in NYC. Appropriately, the group made their recorded debut with 'Live at the Cafe Au Go Go', which captured the group at the peak of its power, during a week-long stand in November 1965 at the titular Greenwich Village club. This historic set of recordings also yielded a good deal of marvelous material that was left off the BP's first album. Two of those long-lost performances are featured here-the bands raw 'n mighty readings of a pair of blues classics, Mose Allison's 'Parchman Farm' and Jimmy Reed's 'Bright Lights, Big City.' Sundazed is proud to present these two tracks for the first time on vinyl, direct from the original Verve Folkways mono masters. |

Forged in the creative crucible of 1968's 'Summer of Love', Comus took a darker path than flower-draggled hippiedom, with a prophetic counter-culture vision of ferocious, glowering firepower. Their seminal album 'First Utterance' has continued to mesmerise and subvert since its release in 1971, despite the band violently imploding only two years later. 'Out Of The Coma' is the much anticipated new album by Comus, their first in over thirty three years. It features three brand new songs, 'Out Of The Coma', 'The Sacrifice' and 'The Return', through which courses the unmistakable, Stygian DNA of 'First Utterance', plus the only known recording of the band playing their legendary 'Malgaard Suite', live at a college gig in 1972. The new songs all feature in the band's current live set, and have been enthusiastically received by audiences. 'The Malgaard Suite' was planned as the follow-up album to First Utterance, but it was rejected by the band's then-record label. This recording, made on a mono cassette-player, languished forgotten for some thirty years before being re-discovered and given to the band. Is an aural artefact, raising tantalising questions as to what Comus might have become, had their ambition to record it not been thwarted. Comus in 2012 consists of five original members, Roger Wootton, Bobbie Watson, Glenn Goring, Colin Pearson and Andy Hellaby, plus reeds-player & percussionist Jon Seagroatt from Red Square. The versatile Five Americans were so tapped into the heroic pop scene of 1965-66, they were able to pen brilliant original material that could, at times, sound something like the raw garage howl of the Rolling Stones, the jangle of the Byrds, the psychedelic mystery of Jefferson Airplane or the PhD folk-rock of Simon & Garfunkel. Best of all, lead guitarist Mike Rabon, keyboardist John Durrill, rhythm guitarist Norman Ezell, bassist Jim Grant and drummer Jimmy Wright, put their own distinct stamp on a string of smashes that began with the mighty "I See the Light" in early 1966. At No.19 in Julian Cope's Japrocksampler publication, Karuna Khyal's album Alomony 1985 is widely acknowledged as years ahead of its time, preceding other Japanese underground experimental outfits such as Fushitsusha, White Heaven and Magical Power Mako by almost 20 years. The bands musical influences are if anything more Germanic than Japanese with long hypnotic free form rock passages, a heavy use of tape loops, electronics, environmental sounds, distortion and backwards tapes underpinning some manic harmonica playing on some gut-wrenching blues dirges. Can, Faust and Guru Guru clearly had an influence on the band, as did Captain Beefheart and Pere Ubu. Not much is know about the bands line-up, although it is widely thought there was some crossover in personal with Brast Burn, another significant outfit of the same era which exerted such influence over newer participants in the Japanese psych scene such as Nurse With Wound. |

Recorded in late July early August 1968 In Lawrence, Kansas USA. The four Smack members were all summer scholarship music and arts students attending Kansas University (KU) in Lawrence, Kansas. All music tracks were cut 'Live' - only over-dubed lead vocals and background vocals. That year there were some 2800 summer students attending a 6 week summer arts scholarship session - 1800 females and 900 males. Smack was born and played a gig several weeks later and the next thing you know they were all 'stars' of the campus. Someone from the university arranged for them to go in and record an album. An original Smack LP is rare as gold dust. We have only seen 2 copies for sale the past 15 years for massive money. The music are great cover version played with extra heavy fuzz guitar, vocals, bass & drums. Those version of Cream and Hendrix songs are killer. The whole album (very well produced) has a one of a kind Psychedelic feel. There are not many cover albums which gives you another perspective on those known songs. This album does for sure. |

From the barren streets of middle-America come Shaved Women. Reigning as the supreme harbingers of chaos in Saint Louis, Missouri, this nihilistic quartet has risen to the top through an effective mix of brutal noise rock and self-destructive hardcore punk. Informed by the caustic nature of small city-towns, the band focuses its feedback-drenched dirge into a cross-section of existential anxiety and landlocked depression. With the ability to simultaneously smolder and combust, Shaved Women seamlessly blend the warring guitar riffs of Black Flag, the rabid mania of The Jesus Lizard, and Drunks With Guns reckless abandon. Singer Ben Salyers animalistic vocal approach barrels in the red with self-loathing rage over guitarist Chris Ecks grinding walls of feedback. Referencing the buzz-saw warp of Black Flags Greg Ginn, Eck weaves through a maze of discordant riffs while maintaining total control of the bands uncompromising progression. Anchored by the dialed-in rhythm section of bassist John Birkner and drummer Tom Valli, the band easily transitions from erratic breakneck speeds to a headstomping trench crawl with metronomic vitality. The bands unmatched tenacity results in a bevy of AmRep-style breakdowns hinged on unforgettable mid-tempo hooks and complete brainwave annihilation. Lyrically, Salyers lends to the downer nature of the band as he wades through a sea of mediocrity and complacency with songs like "Choices" and "Every Day Life". On "Circles," Salyers barks, "It starts again! It starts again!" as he asserts the pain of mundane existence and the depravity of routine life. Too lazy for suicide. Too apathetic to change. Straying away from the typical "blown-out" sounds of their contemporaries, Shaved Womens self-titled record offers a balanced focus on the bands defiant sound and innovative songwriting. In the processing Modrian's paintings (composition, colour, space) have been transposed to sound-time codes, and orchestrated for a piano and a sampler. The score and music formed from the paintings in this way is a direct translation of the work, and allows the recipient to enjoy Modrian's paintings as music. LIMITED EDITION RECORD STORE DAY RELEASE! Both tracks originally NON-LP sides-together here for the first time as a single! Following the '68 release of the groundbreaking album The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark, Gene Clark and Doug Dillard returned to the studio in early '69 to record a new single for A&M. Country-rock was still in its formative stage and was certainly considered a commercial risk. The result was stunning. 'Lyin' Down the Middle' unveiled itself as an infectious, uptempo country rocker, featuring one of Gene Clark's most inspired vocals and further enhanced by future-Eagle Bernie Leadon's supremely tasteful guitar-picking. For a follow-up single release just a few short months later, Dillard & Clark cut the lushly orchestrated Clark composition 'Why Not Your Baby.' Boasting gorgeous harmonies and soaring strings, the recording remains one of the strongest in Clark's repertoire, and one of the finest examples of the sound of country meeting rock. Remarkably, both 'Lyin' Down the Middle' and 'Why Not Your Baby' were issued ONLY as single sides at the time by A&M; they were not included on any original Dillard & Clark album.
