Like some Drone-Dream collision, where its intense peak recalls perhaps the mighty "Suicide" by Spacemen 3, yet channelled further towards the cosmos! 0374452 LP 901325 0889397901325 VINYL LOVERS	COSMIC JOKERS - GALACTIC SUPERMARKET Originally released in 1974 as Galactic Supermarket, this LP was the result of several all-night psychedelic jam sessions fuelled by a krautrock supergroup better known as the Cosmic Jokers. The Jokers were none other than Klaus Schulze and Manual Gottsching of Ash Ra Temple and Jurgen Dollase and Harald Grosskopf of Wallenstein (on mellotron and drums) with the occasional vocals provided by Rosi Muller and Gille Lettmann. These historic sessions were organized by producer Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser who, instead of bothering to ask the musicians to cut an album, took the alternative route of feeding them copious amounts of acid and surreptitiously recording the results! This predictably enraged everyone involved in the project, and for decades the recordings languished in legal proceedings. Featuring a deck of tarot cards designed by Wegmüller himself and original silver laminated cover artwork! Originally released in 1973 on Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser's newly formed Kosmische Kuriere label, this legendary project was a collaboration between Swiss fringe artist Walter Wegmüller and the creme de la creme of the krautrock scene, including Klaus Schulze and Manuel Göttsching and Walter Westrupp (Witthüser & Westrupp). Wegmüller had been working intensely on creating his own deck of tarot cards when he crossed paths with Kaiser who discussed with him the possibility of doing an album, but it was actually Timothy Leary (who was hiding in Switzerland at the time) who suggested that he should base the album on the tarot deck. The album finally came together in December 1972 in Dieter Dierk's studio near Cologne with Wegmüller providing the vocals and album art, and the Cosmic Jokers providing the music. After some marvellous releases on Legowelt's Strange Life and Minimal Rome, Heinrich Dressel is finally celebrating the use of vintage synthesizers and driven electronic machines, holding elements of electro and ambient at the same time, but breaking from the genres too, deeply inspired by Heinrich Dressel, the pioneering German archeologist sent to study in the holy city in Monte Testaccio, who drew what is now a major tool for study of Roman amphorae, the "Table of Dressel. Heinrich Dressel is placed in a sort of limbo where John Carpenter meets Drexciya, a sonorous journey through the darker side of the electro, taking the commands of the Elka Synthex, one of the most impressive polysynths in the history of music, planned and manifactured by Mario Maggi in the early 80s, as the commercial brother of the MCS70, synth that gave birth to a masterpice album like "Automat". There are no weak parts on the album at all. Only impressive songs played by talented musicians, recorded professionally, and taken from the master tapes. Everything fits together quite perfectly. Fans of early Pink Floyd will thoroughly enjoy the LP. Its style is reminiscent of the late 1960s. All songs, except for the rather catchy "Lory", are very mysterious and reveal their real beauty only after being listened to for several times. It's a shame that Lightshine from Emmerich have not released any further material. The one at hand is an aural pleasure from the first to the very last tone. The original LP was released on the Trefiton label in 1976. Based in Lille, France, they came to Damaged Goods' attention having played with Thee Spivs. Once upon a time, Jimi Ben found himself lost in the jungle. He had been wandering in South East Asia for years and could find no way out. One night he was cruising for dirt and love, he got struck by sexedelic visions emerging from the red lights of go-go bars. An inner baboon voice told him: "Jimi! Bad is good for you. Why don't you set up a Rock'N'Roll band?". That's exactly what he did. Back in his hometown (Stockton, Northern France), he was taught by long-time friend Ricky Love how to play power chords on a guitar and recorded a first LP demo on a 4 tracks tape recorder in his kitchen. In December 2009, Johnny Boom (drums) joined Ricky Love (bass, vocals) and Jimi Ben (vocals, guitars) for their first show and further DIY tape recordings (Monkeys In Da House EP - 2011). Mainly influenced by American Garage bands, 60s British Beat groups, Surf Music, Punk Rock and New Wave, these slackers like it rather cheesy, danceable and fun. The Jimi Ben Band started as a lo-fi garage trio. Since then, they have performed about 40 shows in France and Belgium and developed a degenerate style based on energy, coconut vocals and great amounts of reverb. The Briks released their first 45, the poppy "Can You See Me?" on Bismark in '66, though garage fans love the flip side, "Foolish Baby". Both sides are originals by Richard Borgens and Cecil Cotten. Dot label picked it up for national distribution and to promote the record the Briks traveled to Houston for shows at the Catacombs, around November of 1966. These troubled future gas station attendants came from Texas. Their first single was a local pop hit, but by the time of this, their third 45 they were spit-roasting beat band. Comped on Texas Flashbacks amongst others, this is a truly great example of garage beat made to be performed and played at parties. Four On The Floor beat with crackling guitar and a snarling vocal. It's limited to 500 copies on white vinyl. CASE formed in Croydon in 1979 after being introduced to each other by Slimy Toad from Johnny Moped. Case played the pubs of south London and finally released their one and only 7", the Wheat From The Chaff EP in 1983, it reached the top of the independent charts and led to them being played heavily on BBC radio including plays by John Peel, Janice Long & Kid Jensen. Originally, in 1980, CASE played primarily at a (fairly rough) pub in North Croydon, called "The Star" and built quite a following there before larger, occasionally more salubrious, venues beckoned. They famously played at The Rainbow in November 1981 - where smoke flares and buckets of maggots flew into the crowd as the band played, the Marquee Club (where they were banned for playing an encore - the only band to be banned for this since the Rolling Stones), Hammersmith Palais, 100 Club, the BBC Paris Theatre, ICA, & the Woolwich Tram Shed (and Chislehurst Caves!) amongst other less-prestigious venues. To be young in Ireland at this time was extremely tough with many choosing to follow the well-worn path of emigration. A significant number of those that stayed had little choice but to join the dole as employment opportunities were scant. However, the increasing influence of those windows to the wider world such as TV, radio and print were combining to fuel imaginations and plant seeds of disaffection amongst an increasingly sophisticated and pop literate youth desperate for change. Needless to say when punk entered the mainstream the cultural and social conditions were such in Ireland that a new generation of kids were perfectly primed to tap into its energies and values. Focusing on a three year period from 1980 to 1983, Strange Passion is a compilation of rare, unheralded and unreleased Irish music that emerged after the first wave of punk and new wave bands. A time when the raw primitive sounds of punk began to absorb new ideas and technologies and emerging acts were reaching audiences on an unprecedented scale thanks to new magazines such as Hot Press and Heat, RTE Radio 2 and its Fanning Sessions, as well as new youth magazine programmes on national TV like Anything Goes. Access to UKs broadcasting and magazine cultural behemoths (Peel, NME, Morley etc.) as well as touring bands such as The Clash and PIL also played their part in creating an appetite for this thrilling new subculture and soon venues such as The Magnet, Dandelion and Project Arts Centre in Dublin and Kampus in Cork became significant live music hubs. This was catalysed by new youth scenes which sprung up particularly in the main urban centres of Belfast, Derry, Dublin and Cork. Fuelled by boredom, antipathy towards society and inspired by the developing DIY scene in the UK, new bands, independent labels fanzines and creative art provocateurs began to emerge. Such was the rapid growth and creative freedom of this new culture that for a couple of years there seemed a constant stream of emerging acts producing work that was both original in content and presentation. Undoubtedly U2 were the breakthrough act from this new generation of acts. However, others such as Virgin Prunes with their Dadaist inspired blend of performance art and punk offered a darker vision tapping into the latent energy of their environs which resulted in extraordinary live events and the odd incendiary TV performance. Live legends, The Threat and Chant! Chant! Chant! were gone almost as soon as they arrived but so fully formed were they already that recordings they did leave behind stand as prime examples of post punk music. "Poema" (1977) orally represents the structure and spatial characteristics of a poem, by listing all its structural elements: words, paragraphs and verses, etc. The LP also includes "Aritmetica", "Three Spanish Pieces", "First Spanish Lesson" as well as the legendary "45 revoluciones por minuto", the grooviest track ever created within the context of conceptual art. All pieces, recorded at the Instituut voor Sonologie in Utrecht between September and October 1977, have in common their refusal of discursiveness. They are not meant to be true or beautiful. Meeting and formulating ideas at the London School of Economics and the Slade School of Art around the dawn of 1978. They resided in a number of East London squats and set up makeshift studios with borrowed equipment and Synthesisers purchased by Levene. A creative rush between the spring of 1978 and the summer of 1979, saw them recording a plethora of music primarily influenced by Disco, a number of key Italian composers, Throbbing Gristle, Krautrock and the industrial sounds coming out of Blooms hometown of Sheffield, not to mention an obsession for Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". This intense 2 year period took its toll on this very close and guarded threesome and they soon found themselves heading off in three directions. Bloom back to her hometown of Sheffield whilst Niko was enlisted to the Italian Army. The tapes -which included last years quick sell out GPS 5 trk 7" and cassette- have been coaxed from the reclusive Levene who now resides in Brussels; and leaves the KN X archives empty, with the release of this full length. So what are we left with? Well Levene now looks back on this short, but eminently fruitful period claiming they were trying to make electronic / disco themed pop music in an attempt to get on to TV. While disco may have been at the heart of KN X, a very different beast lurks within. An often dark, unsettling narrative set to simple drum machines, synthesisers, sequences and the isolated, almost childlike vocals of Cy Levene and Anna Bloom puts this shortlived project into a whole new genre. An LP -and series of recordings- that its creators imagined forever lost to the masses, now seems set to earn itself a key role as main hitter in the murky, yet increasingly researched world of mid to late 70s minimal synth. To be young in Ireland at this time was extremely tough with many choosing to follow the well-worn path of emigration. A significant number of those that stayed had little choice but to join the dole as employment opportunities were scant. However, the increasing influence of those windows to the wider world such as TV, radio and print were combining to fuel imaginations and plant seeds of disaffection amongst an increasingly sophisticated and pop literate youth desperate for change. Needless to say when punk entered the mainstream the cultural and social conditions were such in Ireland that a new generation of kids were perfectly primed to tap into its energies and values. Focusing on a three year period from 1980 to 1983, Strange Passion is a compilation of rare, unheralded and unreleased Irish music that emerged after the first wave of punk and new wave bands. A time when the raw primitive sounds of punk began to absorb new ideas and technologies and emerging acts were reaching audiences on an unprecedented scale thanks to new magazines such as Hot Press and Heat, RTE Radio 2 and its Fanning Sessions, as well as new youth magazine programmes on national TV like Anything Goes. Access to UKs broadcasting and magazine cultural behemoths (Peel, NME, Morley etc.) as well as touring bands such as The Clash and PIL also played their part in creating an appetite for this thrilling new subculture and soon venues such as The Magnet, Dandelion and Project Arts Centre in Dublin and Kampus in Cork became significant live music hubs. This was catalysed by new youth scenes which sprung up particularly in the main urban centres of Belfast, Derry, Dublin and Cork. Fuelled by boredom, antipathy towards society and inspired by the developing DIY scene in the UK, new bands, independent labels fanzines and creative art provocateurs began to emerge. Such was the rapid growth and creative freedom of this new culture that for a couple of years there seemed a constant stream of emerging acts producing work that was both original in content and presentation. Undoubtedly U2 were the breakthrough act from this new generation of acts. However, others such as Virgin Prunes with their Dadaist inspired blend of performance art and punk offered a darker vision tapping into the latent energy of their environs which resulted in extraordinary live events and the odd incendiary TV performance. Live legends, The Threat and Chant! Chant! Chant! were gone almost as soon as they arrived but so fully formed were they already that recordings they did leave behind stand as prime examples of post punk music. Mannequin is really happy to present the 30th Anniversary Edition of the 12 EP Loving Machinery" from Central Unit, the cult New Wave mitteleuropean band based in Bologna (nowdays reformed with a different lineup). Formed in 1981, they were among the first in Italy to manipulate synths, drum machines and other electronic devices (as far as we know they were one of the few bands in the world able to program a Korg-KR55 drum machine) to create atmospheric soundscapes and they were considered the Italian answer to Tuxedomoon, who spawned a whole school in the Italian underground. After the first live appareances as opening act to bands like Spandau Ballet and Monochrome Set in their Italian tours, Central Unit published in March 1982, the 12 EP "Loving Machinery" with 4 tracks, including a cover of "What Use?" from Tuxedomoon. The EP first entered Belgian and German charts with the single "Saturday Nite", thanks to its skeletal electronic beats and minimal synth atmospheres, combined with mechanical basslines and relentless bass guitar meanderings, with slothy saxophone murmurs peeping out here and there. Central Unit joined some important live shows in Italian and foreign festival (remarkable their show in 1983 at No Wave, No Jazz festival in Berlin where they played with Fad Gadget, Einsturzende Neubauten and Notorische Reflexe), and they released an album for major label CGD, produced by Tuxedomoon bassist Peter Principle in 1983. Cover art by the renowned cartoon artist Giorgio Carpinteri (Frigidaire, Linus). Carpinteri was part of the so- called Valvoline group, a group of experimental comics artists, that followed in the footsteps of Jos Muoz, Joost Swarte and Art Spiegelman. 12 EP Version: Limited edition of 300 copies, clear vinyl.

'Spirits Up Above'. He was as funky as singer James Brown. With three horns in his mouth, he sounded like the entire JB reed section. And onstage, with a truckload of instruments around his neck, he was the hardest working man in jazz business. Saxophonist, flautist, clarinettist and multiple custom-reed instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1936-77) livened up the music scene like few other artists before or since. The 22-track collection, sequenced more or less chronologically, follows Kirk's trajectory from a neo-bar walking tenor saxophonist ("Making Love After Hours" and "Roots" from Here Comes the Whistleman), into a more ambitious, but no less compelling, composer and player, beginning with 1967's "Inflated Tear." Many of Kirk's most celebrated tracks are included, along with a couple of dogs-"Portrait of Those Beautiful Ladies" and "Freaks For the Festival" from 1975's The Case of the Three-Sided Dream in Audio Colour, an unfortunate attempt to buff up the music for the emergent jazz-funk audience. Initially derided by "serious" jazz critics, who thought he belonged in a carnival side show, Kirk ultimately won over most skeptics. He was an experimentalist hardwired into blues and gospel roots, an incandescent soloist, and a supreme entertainer. He was also an articulate supporter of the black and civil rights movement. He just about had it all-and his music still sends shivers up the spine 35 years after his death.
