CAMEL (ITALY) - UNDER AGE
Reissue of rare 1969 UK hard psych rock that's quite good although totally forgotten. These CAMEL are not to be confused with the other famous british band called CAMEL that recorded their first album only in 1973. These CAMEL were one of the many British bands that moved to Italy in the late 60s, mainly because the RCA studios in Rome were famous worldwide for their devices, but also for the market that was very open to British artists. This is the only one album published by this band. It features "Pinball wizard" is a Who cover but all the album is very close to the Who's sound. Rock-beat with good choirs and good playing. On the second track the lead vocalist sonds a bit like Robert Plant and some pauses remind to Moody Blues. "Where is my mind" is probably the track that gave them the psychedelic label even if without some excesses in the use of keyboards and distorted sounds. |

CIRCUS 2000 - AN ESCAPE FROM A BOX
One of the few American sounding Italian bands, and so convincing that even Vernon Joynson, in his 1988 book The Flashback included them in the US psychedelia section! Their second album came in 1972, still in English but with a slightly more polished sound and some progressive influences. An escape from a box is again a very short album, around 33 minutes, but the five songs are longer and the opening Hey man (also released as a single) the best track. After 1973 singer Silvana Aliotta tried a solo career (as Silvana dei Circus 2000) with some singles but the. Original drummer Johnny Betti founded the small Shirak label and formed Living Life along with guitarist Quartarone. The latter was also involved in the Il vangelo secondo Barabba album. Drummer Dede Lo Previte played with Duello Madre, Nova and Kim & the Cadillacs. Both albums by Circus 2000 are now rare and expensive, probably pressed in small quantities. EAST OF EDEN - ESSEN 1970
East of Eden from Bristol in England played elaborate progressive rock with saxophone, violin, and flute. Their only hit, "Jig-a-jig", ist not typical for their music. The band can look back on a history of eleven long-players, not counted the many compilations. On Tuesday, 22nd October 1970, the group performed in the Gruga hall at the third Essen Pop & Blues Festival. The event was recorded semi-professionally by the promoters. The recordings were mastered now in a first-class sound studio with great effort and care. The sound, however, is naturally not as good as that of the studio LPs. The 12-page deluxe insert in LP size contains a long band history in German and English, a detailed discography, numerous cover and label repros, a gig list, many informations about the festival as well as a personal retrospective report by Dave Arbus. Comes in deluxe gatefold cover. A must for collectors. It is the first legitimate release of an East of Eden live recording. |

Fronted by singer Linda Rothwell, the british Goliath need to be filed right next to Linda Hoyle's Affinity. A truly exceptional band who managed to release their only album on a major label (CBS) open for bands the size of Deep Purple, and then just disappear leaving no trace. Their music is generally classed as heavy progressive, but also as a little crossover as it has interesting elements of jazz & blues through the use of Sax and Flute, and even an interesting eastern flavour, most noticeable in their cover of Davy Graham's "Maajun (A Taste of Tangier)", which gains strenght being played in a more progressive, hard mood. Remaining unnoticed for many years, this major-label true rarity has been a little secret amongst knowledgeable collectors, and has been soaring in price in the last times as copies rarely turn up. At times this album is a gorgeous, ethereal blend of psychedelic folk and offbeat pop; but there are some funk and avant-garde moves too (where did those crazy orchestrations, wild guitar, and breakbeats on the fierce anti-war rave-up Hard Headed Woman come from?), all supported by an odd assortment of instruments, including flute, bells and a generous helping of fuzz guitar. Chicago-based duo Chuck Hollins and David Starr only made this one album, which originally appeared in 1970 on the Ovation label. All we know about them is what the original ads for the album said: "David Starr learned piano when he was three, began composing when he was four. At twenty-one he was playing flute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Chuck Hollins picked up a guitar one day and just started playing.... by the time he left Northwestern with his Creative Writing degree he was turning his poetry into music." Others have said: "Unique blend. with a lovely dreaming, drifting vibe" - the Acid Archives; "Many diverse influences from pop-psych, mystical mellow passages, quasi-classical touches, delightful ethereal flute, trance-like vocals and fuzz guitar. there is much to appreciate on this largely undiscovered gem" - Fuzz, Acid & Flowers. The replica LP version comes in an old style tip-on jacket, and include an insert with an essay on the album and a little background history on the Ovation label. It is a 180 gram vinyl pressing, mastered from the original tapes; the sad news: this LP version is limited to 750 copies. So, we state that the sole album by Chuck Hollins and Dave Starr, their only known recordings, is a treasure trove of strong melodies and dreamy vocal stylings-an album sure to appeal to fans of acid folk, popsike, and even those who like jazzy funk. Listening to it is a rich, rewarding experience. This is a perfectly produced and arranged record, an ode to the free mind, structured by intelligent considerations. And as another person has said, "No wonder it has been sampled by DJ Shadow." Ovation said at the time of its release, "Classical artistry rock and sidewalk poetry." All true. Very cool. Though the Electric Prunes were responsible for some of the boldest and most experimental pop of the late 60s, they always were, more than just about any band of their ilk, a singles-oriented act, at least in their earliest incarnation. In fact, according to vocalist James Lowe, the engineers at American Recording, where many of their early singles were recorded, used to transmit the single mixes to a radio in a car parked outside the studio to make sure the songs sounded good in the medium through which most people would hear them. As a result, the Prunes singles were punchier than their album counterparts, and were, above all mono-yet to date, no legitimate collection has ever compiled these singles, many of which have never been on CD in their original mix. After the release of the Freak Scene album, psychedelic guru Rusty Evans made his way from NYC to San Francisco, a geographic shift that resulted in work for the legendary San Francisco Sound label, producing bands such as Its A Beautiful Day, Tripsichord, and Indian Puddin and Pipe; it also led to a drastic shift in style from the psychedelic "happening" of the Deep album for Cameo Parkway and the raga rock of the Freak Scene album for Columbia. And so it came to pass that Evans reclaimed his birth name of Marcus, and recorded a very mellow LP in 1969 for Kinetic Records, a label formed by the Kinetic Playground Ballroom in Chicago. Like much of Marcus work, the album is a fascinating relic of a particular time and place, in this instance San Franciscos Haight-Ashbury district in the post-Summer of Love era. The Marcus LP is richly orchestrated psychedelic-folk music, with a pronounced Donovan and/or Tim Harden flavor to it, something that did not escape its creator. The mood is dreamy, the songs reflective, the voice vibrato, the album a yin to the yang of the Freak Scene "Psychedelic Psoul" album which precedes it by two years. So we have the hot and aggressive Freak Scene album contrasted-some might say perfectly balanced-by the diffuse and tranquil Marcus album two years later. To our mind, further proof of the excellence of the artistic mind behind both albums. This is the first actual re-issue of the vastly under-rated Marcus album since 1969; the only previous CD edition used alternate takes and not the album versions. Our fulsome edition indulges any completionist fantasies we might harbor, as it also serves up thirty-two bonus tracks, nearly two hours of alternate takes and acoustic demos (plus a few non-album tracks). There are guitar/voice demos recorded several months before Kinetic came along and offered a deal; other home demos have Marcus with acoustic guitar, bass and cello. The Ensemble Kluster was found by Conrad Schnitzler in 1969. It can be considered as one of the most radical and influential German progressive, avantgarde bands. Its music-approach and playing-techniques are related to Stockhausen and the group "Nuova Consonanza" & its influences and protagonistic characteristics in music can still be found in works of many avantgarde & industrial-bands of today. Conrad's continous working-partners over the years have been Klaus Freudigmann and Wolfgang Seidel. Kluster worked also with various friends including Tangerine Dream or Hans Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius with which Conrad recorded and released three of the Kluster-actions on vinyl in 1971 called 'Eruption', 'Klopfzeichen' and 'Zwei Osterei' and which then went on to form the band Cluster. Kluster performs with regular instruments (piano, electric guitar, cello, percussion, electric organ). Those sounds are recorded with a contact-microphone, transformed, manipulated, distorted, chopped-up, conveyed by loudspeakers. The result is an exciting, raw and roughly structured sound-continuum, rich on associations and of a fascination reminding and edging of a sound-magic. |

For this occasion DDV and AMVK were joined by the obscure act Etat Brut. In 2002 Dylan joined forces on turntables and in 2003 they added Mauro Pawlowski on guitar.
