De Stijl's excavation of The Parasites Of The Western World turns up the lead single for their second album in the form of an exact reissue. Originally released circa 1980-81, 'Politico' opened the A-side to Substrata with a rippin' New Wave roller full of glam stomp, proggy arrangement and punky attitude. The synth-fuelled instrumental B-side was exclusive to the single, and as tradition dictates, far more interesting, featuring Terry Censky and Patrick Burke in an ebullient symphony of synths, drums and guitar. |

ABACUS - JUST A DAY'S JOURNEY AWAY
ABACUS is surely a big name for everyone interested in rock music. The band formed in 1971 made their breakthrough at the Germersheim rock festival, where ABACUS drew not less applause from the 300,000 visitors than PINK FLOYD, SANTANA or ELP which appeared on stage as well. In the following ABACUS published 4 LPs, of which the last 3 where recorded at Giorgio Moroder's "MUSICLAND". Because of the global record sales, numerous national and international tours, TV and radio shows ABACUS became a top act not only in Germany. ABACUS delivered the same dense sound on stage as in the studio. Maybe that's why they became a crowd puller for countless shows. Musical differences about future record productions were among other things responsible for the break up of the band in 1976. Reissue of debut album by USA heavy psych rock band. Originally released in 1969. Signed by Atlantic, their 1969 debut "Banchee" teamed the quartet (former Peepl singer/guitarist Peter Alongi, drummer Victor Digilio, rhythm guitarist Jose Miguel deJesus, and bassist Michael Marino) with producers Warren Schatz and Stephen Schlaks. Like much late-1960s product the debut displayed some psych influences, but the predominant sound was heavy, guitar-powered rock. With all four members contributing material, original numbers such as 'Beautifully Day' (sic), the fuzz guitar-propelled 'Evolmia', 'I Just Don't Know' and the extended 'Tom's Island' offered up a series of high energy guitar powered rockers that were both tuneful and structural interesting. side 1) 1.) BANCHEE - THINKIN'
Released two years after their debut, 1971's "Thinkin'" found Banchee signed to Polydor. It also found the group expanded to a five piece with the addition of singer/percussionist Fernando Roman (who happened to be Jose Miguel deJesus' cousin). With the band co-producing with an assist from Dave Palmer and Ralph Moss (Jimi Hendrix manager Michael Jeffrey credited as executive producer), the sophomore set found the band aiming for an even tougher rock sound. Unlike the debut which was a largely democratic project with everyone contributing to the writing chores, this time around singer/rhythm guitarist Jose Miguel deJesus was responsible for the majority of the material (lead guitarist Peter Alongi contributing two tracks). Kicked along by Alomgi's squealing lead guitar (this is one of those great headphone LPs), some understated Latin percussion, and their "group" lead vocals, songs such as the blazing opener 'John Doe', 'Willya' and the title track made for hard rock that was simultaneously tuneful and commercial. At least to my ears the results recalled Santana at their most rocking, or perhaps Manassas-era Stephen Stills. While it wasn't particularly original, or groundbreaking, this was one of those rare albums where there simply wasn't a bad song on the entire set. No, it wasn't perfect, but it beat the crap out of scores of better known and selling competitors. Curiously this is the album that seems to attract critical attention (it's listed in one of the Hans Pokora reference books), though I find the debut just as entertaining. |

What a guitar work this is. Ivan Horn really kicks ass with his extra heavy guitar. As good as the heavy CREAM songs, in parts as creative as JIMI HENDRIX. The musical range and the guitar style is as good as the best early ERIC CLAPTON work with the far out techniques of Jimi Hendrix. All own composition, long tracks, extra heavy guitar, English vocals & heavy drum sounds. Ivan Horn: guitars, vocals & kazzo, Mich Brink: bass, Gibber Thomsen: vocals & congas, Henning Aasbjerg: drums. If Spectator would have kept rock music their musical style instead of switching to Jazz, those 4 bands would have been successful on the international rock circus. |

The remainder of the album comprises harder edged rock cuts, their own interpretation of 'Stormy Monday' and 'Hooked', which is the best moment on the album vocally. Worth checking out. The band hailed from the Kansas/Missouri area. |

First time ever readily available on vinyl - the rarest entry on the legendary Nurse With Wound list (which is saying something). Ltd. ed. of 300. "Fille Qui Mousse ("Girl With Froth"??) is one the most mythical albums to be released(?) from France. Recorded in 1972, it was issued in 73 (evidently only as a test pressing in an edition of maybe 50) by the legendary Futura label. Often referred to as the French Faust, FQMs album mixed collage, psychedelic rock, surreal poetry, and organically tapped noise purity with the absolute best of experimental 70s rock-and-beyond. One of the essential reissues of the 70s rock underground." - Bichon. "Straight off, we plunge into that Faust structure...riffing with a psychedelic bent, hints of Gong too...we move into bizarrely constructed patterns of percussive sound and chopped-up rock music, and just as a musical focus takes shape it disappears. A poem, recited by a girl, over an urban landscape populated by numerous barking dogs then gives way to an intensely strange mangled web of sound thats almost brain numbing. And, yet more in the way of strangeness is a piano based piece that recalls some of Roger Doyle's early experiments. The only actual song has the most bizarre lyrics (in English) and is followed by an excursion in distorted and processed guitar. Next is where the folk music comes in, but even with gypsy violin FQMs interpretation of folk is strange and twisted. Gäa, a band from the Saarland region in Germany, played progressive rock with German lyrics. Their band name derives from the ancient Greek gods, for whom Gaia was the goddess of the earth and fertility. The group's only LP, 'Auf Der Bahn Zum Uranus', was a limited edition release on the Kerston label in 1974. Copies today change hands for about 600 EUR. It is a mature and well-balanced album, the artistic value of which long remained undiscovered. The tasteful cover was designed by Eduard Bell, the brother of Gaa bassist Peter Bell. There were several re-issues of the album -LPs as well as CDs-, but unfortunately not all of them were legitimate releases. The LP on Garden of Delights is provided with a four-page coloured insert (LP size) offering a detailed band history in German and English, complete discography, label repros, many photographs and the full story on the Kerston label. |

Langsyne from Barmen (Bergisches land region) in Germany played a subtle kind of psych-folk with a wide range of partly unusual, exotic and medieval instruments: sitar, psaltery, koto, glockenspiel, flute, etc. Especially remarkable is the instinctive assurance with which the three musicians, who understood each other without words, played their music together. Their only LP was released as a very small edition of only 200 copies in 1976. It is today the second most expensive "Deutschrock-LP" (close on the heels of the first edition of Cans 'Monster Movie'). Original copies nowadays fetch more than 1000 EUR. Elliott Murphy and his Brother formed the backbone of the Murphys, a New York Underground Garage and Psych Rock Band (13th Floor Elevators covers as early as 1967). When time came to record a demo for a major label deal, tensions within the band erruptet and they broke up. Instead of folding , Elliott, his brother and a dear friend recorded the whole original material with 2 guitars and a bass guitar only. LIMITED! In 1970 Bo Anders Persson (Pärson Sound, International Harvester, Harvester, Träd, Gräs och Stenar, Hot Boys) and Solveig Bark compiled, edited and released the album Reportage: Spela själv (Play Yourself). It contains field recordings of amateurs playing / making sounds. Raga concrete, if you will. A playground, drummers and fiddlers, a garden cafe, children, one track simply titled "Gronas" ("Green"). Time to getcher esoteric on. The title roughly translates to Play Yourself or Play Naturally. The album is sometimes credited to Träd, Gräs och Stenar, but they're not featured on this album. They did, however, participate in a tour 1970, arranged by Rikskonserter, also called Spela Själv. Solveig Bark was one of a few young composers that through the UNM (Young Nordic Music Festivals) became a contemporary of ERKKI KURENNIEMI, FOLKE RABE, etc.). Since the late 70s, while in the widely neglected 39 Clocks, he made records that never sold and played gigs that few ever saw, Juergen Gleue has arguably been the most important exponent of electrified German sound. Phantom Payn Days was made in the mid to late 90s and has never been released. It's his final LP and is overflowing with all the elements that romanticized, loner / stoner music claims, an encoded expression of highly private feelings, an ambiguous, emotional quotient, and a dark, murkily melodic vibe. It's a record that first and foremost lives and breathes with an endless stream of great songs. But perhaps it's most curious component is it's amazingly prescient sound, a precursor to so many of today's lo fi acts, all wrapped up in their San Francisco hair. |

Members of this band moved from Japan to England and they added several english musicians as well to create full line-up. They recorded 2 albums: "Samurai"(also known as "Green Tea")(1970) and "Kappa"(1971). They played interesting mix of heavy prog a la Deep Purple with lots of Japanese folk infuences (like using traditional asian instruments) + late 60' psychedelia. Their leader was Miki Curtis (it's Japanese guy, only name is british...) who seems to be quite popular pop singer in the 60' in Japan and nowadays he's an actor. The Shiver are for sure the most renowned psychedelic band from Switzerland. Their one and only LP "Walpurgis" (from 1969) is legendary and hardly affordable. So, evidently, a lot of bootleg versions appeared on the market over the years, but all of them very poorly done. The LP on Garden of Delights comes in a gatefold cover and, as usual, with a 4-page insert in LP size, including a detailed band history in German and English language, discography, cover and label repros, band photographs etc. The LP has three bonus tracks. Two of those are taken from the very rare sampler "1. Schweizer Rhythm and Blues Festival". The early version of "Repent Walpurgis" comes from a so-called split single from 1968, where you can find The Etc on its flip side. Thus, the complete released works of The Shiver can be found on this LP. The fold-out cover artwork designed by H. R. Giger was taken over unchanged. |

SUNDENFALL II - SUNDENFALL II
Suendenfall II from the Kevelaer area at the Lower Rhine played a mixture of folk and jazz, influenced by Jethro Tull. While their predecessors, Suendenfall, exclusively dedicated themselves to jazz, the group included folk after a change in line-up and band name (following the example of Amon Duul II). In 1972, Hubert Schmitz invited the band into his Trepitia film and sound studio in Alpen-Druept for free recordings, as he wanted to test the newly installed equipment after a recent move into the new location. Thus the recordings were made for the album "Suendenfall II" (Trefiton HS 1017), which was released in a small edition of 200 copies at the end of 1972. Today it is sold at a price of about 500 to 1000 in mint condition. The LP re-issue is a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies and comes with a four-page colour insert in LP size, including a detailed band history in German and in English language, many band photographs, informations about the Trefiton label etc. |

TETRAGON - STRETCH
Tetragon, successor of Trikolon, were founded in Osnabrueck (Lower Saxony) in the spring of 1971. They released their first and only LP, "Nature", in that very year. It came out as CD on Musea in 1995. At the end of 1971, Tetragon recorded in a Hamburg studio five long tracks in their well-proven style for their second LP, the release of which, however, failed. Fortunately, the master tape has survived until the present day, so that now, 39 years past schedule, the work was released on LP. Three of the five songs have been written by the band itself, one by Eddie Harris ("Listen here") and one by John McLaughlin ("Dragon song"). The two latter ones had already been interpreted by Brian Auger. Especially remarkable are Hendrik Schaper's exceptional play on keyboards and Juergen Jaehner's hot guitar play. The other two, however, are their equals in skill and talent. The LP edition is a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies and comes with a four-page colour insert in LP size, including a detailed band history in German and in English language, band photographs, discography with cover and label repros etc. |

An album full of VINTAGE 1966-1968 Music by the band that brought you the incredible 'HASHISH' on the legendary San Franciso Sampler 'Fifth Pipe Dream'. This is the first ever release of this killer psychedelic West Coast monster, that took many years to complete!!! West Coast Natural Gas started in 1965 in Seattle. In early 1967 they went to San Francisco to work for a local music manager named Matthew Katz. Katz was the original manager for Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape and later also It's a Beautiful Day. He talked West Coast Natural Gas into signing a contract with him but being young and stupid, they didn't realize at the time that they had basically signed everything over to him. They went into the studio and recorded some original tunes, incl 'A Favor', 'Go Run And Play', 'The Jumping Frog', 'Hashish', 'Water Or Wine', 'Beyond This Place', and 'Two's A Pair'. In early 1968 the band broke up and went back to Seattle. Katz released the single 'Go Run And Play' b w/ 'A Favor' on his S.F. Sound label under the name West Coast Natural Gas. Later he released a compilation album -the first San Francisco Sound sampler- called 'Fifth Pipe Dream'. The four songs mentioned before, 'Water Or Wine', 'Hashish', 'Beyond This Place' and 'Two's A Pair' were the ones recorded by West Coast Natural Gas, though Kats presented these as by the band 'Indian Pudding & Pipe'. This superb release includes all the above mentioned songs, plus archival material taken from acetates. A big surprise here is that four recently unshelved and never before heard songs are included as well. All of these were recorded in 1966 at a local Seattle Recording Studio before the band moved to San Francisco. "The first public appearance pairing Christian Henjes and Juergen Gleue (inspired by and with names derived from LSD-25, they would become CH-39 and JG-39) was in 1976, at the Dada Nova (a space occupied by Otto M commune) in midtown Hannover, Germany. Dada Nova would be a space of enduring clash. From the subtlety of a shat upon organ to the ejection from communal meetings by bodily force, the AAO would display that the presence of the 39 CLOCKS was one of their constant grief. Known for pranksterism and the destruction of the clubs in which they would perform, friction in every form would follow the band everywhere. In 1979 they were thrown out of a show in Kassel at Dokumenta (their sounds had disturbed Joseph Beuys). They created an outrage (they wrote a tune with the title "Art Minus Idiots") at the Filmtage Hannover with their avant-garde Super 8 movies made under the disguise of director Zachius Lipschitz. Rumour claims that at a Hannover show at the Cafe Glocksee, they played the vacuum cleaner and a circular saw instead of guitars and there was even a knife throwing incident in Bremen. Inspired, then, (clearly) by protest in the broadest and most romantic sense (they wrote a tune with the title "Radical Student Mob In Satin Boots") their's was a sound attuned to classic American Punk / Nuggets. This collection was put together with the non completist in mind (originals of some of these records are as rare as Italian underwear), intending to display the general 39 CLOCKS vibe, but also some of their more curious wrinkles. And as the 39 CLOCKS were always interested in where they were going and not where they've been, the chronology here is strictly reversed. Diedrich Diedrichsen wrote the first review of the band (in Spex), and we at DeStijl are very pleased to have had him scribe liner notes." |

CONCRETE RUBBER BAND - RISEN SAVIOUR
First official release! Contains 4 page insert with photo of the band and historical notes. The Concrete Rubber Band was a small, Kansas-based "Jesus Band" that performed from the late 1960s to early 1970s. 1974 release on the Missouri-based American Artists label (AAS1164), of which only 2 or three copies are known to be exist in private collections. Despite the song titles, this is actually a strange and unusual rock album which just happens to have religious undertones. There's lots of organ, fuzz guitar, male and female lead vocals and masses of electronic embellishments. This is Christian psychedelia at its most extreme, with synthesized bubbling lava pits, frequency oscillations, distorted sci-fi vocals and short-wave static patterns. The album is littered with some of the most extreme fuzz guitar you'll ever hear, loads of scatty electronic effects, and even a flying saucer sequence right out of Dark Side Of The Moon. The whole project has a dense, murky home-made feel, and Duncan Long, the man behind the synths, guitars and song writing is now a successful sci-fi author. The album was recorded in one of the band's living rooms on a 2-track tape recorder. Only 500 copies were pressed, and most of these were given away when the album failed to realize commercial success. Many thanks to Duncan Long , who give us the 12 excellent Bonus Tracks. Never released and in much better sound quality as the "normal" recordings. |

Fotheringay was the legendary English folk group around singer Sandy Denny who died a long time ago. She had become well-known with the groups Strawbs and Fairport Convention and was elected best British singer several times. At the end of 1969, she founded Fotheringay together with four friends. They could immediately sign a contract with the Island label. On Friday, 23rd October 1970, they had a gig at the third Essen Pop & Blues festival in the Gruga Hall. The concert was then recorded semi-professionally by the host. Now, the tapes have been elaborately re-mastered by Fotheringay guitarist Jerry Donahue who got the most out of the sound that was technically possible. The complete concert is released on both CD and LP. |

The Radio Noisz Ensemble, successor of the folk group Emma Myldenberger, came from the Weinheim an der Bergstrasse area and released its only LP, 'Yniverze' (Ubu Muziek UMS 01), in 1982. It was compared to works of the Third Ear Band, Between, and Tri Atma. 'Odiszee-Parck'(Ubu Muziek UMS 03), appearing only as a small cassette edition, followed in 1983. The music on this album is of a significantly freer style, more unwieldy and harder to digest than its predecessor; less meditative. The CD was drawn from the master tape. The cover motif is the same as the one used for the cassette, the only difference being its coloured design - like the concert poster of a quite similar make - instead of black and white. Once again the oboe is the leading instrument, and also the remaining instrumentation, featuring English horn, zither, double-bass, violin, flutes, etc. is quite unusual. |

Story-tellers, musicians, shamans, geniuses, Sand were known, at the end of the 60s, as P.O.T. (Part of Time). Then Sand - Ludwig Papenberg and his brother Ullrich Papenberg, and Johannes Vester, developed a more avant-gardist, proto-industrial, visionary experimental approach, a truly unique entity in the history of music. Not dependant on a classical "Krautrock" style, Sand is nevertheless part of this movement of German cosmic/psychedelic bands, as well as being the originators of proto-industrial musics. Live Events in the Quarry and an archaic sound formed the background music of the young atomic age. In the meantime the Desert Storm accumulated in endless trance garage sessions. Then SAND drifted from the mythical landscapes to Berlin and were mingled with various oriental influences. Vultures were scudding along the urban canyons whilst burning houses illuminated the skyline. SAND navigated in obscure spheres and discovered Tendrara. |

An album full of VINTAGE 1966-1968 Music by the band that brought you the incredible 'HASHISH' on the legendary San Franciso Sampler 'Fifth Pipe Dream'. First ever release of this killer Westcoast psychedelic monster that took many years to complete!!! West Coast Natural Gas started in 1965 in Seattle. In early 1967 they went to San Francisco to work for a local music manager named Matthew Katz. Katz was the original manager for Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape and later also It's a Beautiful Day. He talked West Coast Natural Gas into signing a contract with him but being young and stupid, they didn't realize at the time that they had basically signed everything over to him. They went into the studio and recorded some original tunes: A Favor, Go Run And Play, The Jumping Frog, Hashish, Water or Wine, Beyond This Place, and Two's A Pair. In early 1968 the band broke up and went back to Seattle. Katz released a single - Go Run and Play / A Favor on his S.F. Sound label under the name West Coast Natural Gas. Later he released a compilation album - the first San Francisco Sound sampler - called "Fifth Pipe Dream". The four songs mentioned before, Water or Wine, Hashish, Beyond This Place and Twos A Pair were the ones recorded by WCNG and relabeled by Katz as Indian Puddin and Pipe. This superb release includes all the above mentioned songs, plus others from acetates. As a big surprise we found another four never before heard songs. All recorded 1966 in a local Seattle Recording Studio before they even went to San Francisco, all of which are included in this great release. |

This album begins when a shaker wakes in the darkness, the first sign of approaching warmth, like spring thaw on a frozen river. The icy shaker that floats on the water is joined by skin drums resounding from the hillside, and by pump-organs migrating over-head with geese. The cirrus clouds are spectral piano trills; the marching cumulous clouds, piano bass-lines. Steel drums, autoharps, vibraphones and dulcimers burst suddenly from under rocks like crawfish. The first 7 inches of theirs bearing their name alone underneath its creepy Mark Riddick artwork enhanced by your average DOOMENTIA quality stamp, Druid Death Cult also contains what is maybe their heaviest material to date. Yes, the fact that the whole thing starts off to the sound of thunder, pouring thunder and of a church bell echoing (Black Sabbath anyone?!) in the distance aint no coincidence as those two new tracks, once again recorded by the bands own Tony Blakk last fall, were conceived under the sign of doooooom. There's worse places to start, than to play your debut show opening for Japanese serial-killer obsessed CHURCH OF MISERY. Its hard to tell if those so-called new wave of US thrash-metal has ever been a reality or just one those journos wild fantasy but if such thing would have ever existed, youd probably find VINDICATOR at the top of the list. Then again, when youre being stranded somewhere in the Cleveland area, Ohio as the Stown brothers Vic (guitar, vocals) and Jesse (drums) were, in the end you have no choice but to follow the rest of the herd. Or simply go for the kill. And they did, as early as in 2005 when real thrash seemed like a thing of the past, only to be revered by thirty years plus old metalheads with tears in their eyes. That such a killer debut as There Will Be Blood had to be self-released due to a total lack of interest from potential labels back in 2008 almost seems like heresy now but its not even like the band themselves cared much. As a matter of fact, as if striving from being free from any outside pressure or hype, they simply set out to release a straight, balls-to-the-walls, no-frills-and-no-bullshit-allowed METAL album. Sitting comfortably somewhere between early MEGADETH tainted with the evil approach of SLAYER and the typically German fury of SODOM, the beauty of this raging little fucker is that it doesnt even pretend to step forward unmasked. Granted with one of the most literate cover out there, full of songtitles alone that just dont beat around the bush and tell you straight what the score is ("Pain And Suffering", "Shrapnel" or "Thrash And Destroy" just to name a few) and even rougher and rawer than its sophomore The Antique Witcheries released two years later, There Will Be Blood shows no mercy. Now re-released on LP with the usual high DOOMENTIA standards, this is once again the time to raise the flag of hate and re-launch the infernal overkill. |

There's worse places to start, than to play your debut show opening for Japanese serial-killer obsessed CHURCH OF MISERY. Then again, since MOONLESS also later on did gigs with SAINT VITUS, PENTAGRAM and UFOMAMMUT and are about to unleash their brilliant debut on DOOMENTIA, one could say this was just a beginning. The band started in Copenhagen, Denmark back in 2008 by people who cut their teeth in the local punkscene throughout the 00s in bands such as No Hope For The Kids, Hjertestop, Amdi Petersens Arm and Village Idiot. People in the know will acknowledge these were important bands helping to put Denmark back on the international map of underground music. After releasing a demo on vinyl (Born Burned Out) in really limited quantity, the band went in the studio to record the debutalbum Calling All Demons in September 2010. The album was recorded on a small Danish island called Sams, in the backroom of an Austin veteran cars museum, if you can believe, in only three days. Musically lying somewhere inbetweene young outfit really makes a difference by having perfectly nailed the ability to write great songs. Underneath the Tony Iommi-styled riffing, thunderous drums and fuzzy bass lines, lies choruses and real catchy hooks that will stick in your cranium for the rest of the month once youve heard them. Calling All Demons is accompanied by mindblowing coverart by Tue S. and the songs on this debut album are nothing short of a triumph, ready to step up at the top of the mountain of bodies that used to be called the stoner scene. Ltd. 300. Carl Calm is the solo project by Chicago citizen Eric Lanham of Caboladies. "Dayglo Port" was recorded and mixed over two days in the tiny back bedroom of The Fact House (a house Chris and Eric of Caboladies used to live and host shows in Lexington, KY) in the fall with the windows wide open and gear eliminating any floor space. In contrast to Caboladies' extensive jam-heavy explorations "Dayglo Port" favors a more introspective and rural atmosphere recalling the mood of seminal home electronica classics such as Nuno Canavarro's "Plux Quba", Sunroof!'s "Cloudz" or Microstoria's "Init Ding". Eric Lanham started playing music in 2006. His then roommate and longtime friend Ben Zoeller got him going and they started playing together. They then added Chris Bush and formed Caboladies. They were enthralled with the experimental music they saw coming through Lexington, KY (where they were all living) and decided to go for it. It started with pedals and feedback mangling and they eventually moved to samplers and synths. They did their first tour in 2007 with Three Legged Race (Hair Police). Chris and Eric moved to Chicago in 2009 and continued Caboladies as a duo. Been grooving ever since....Although they are considered one of the spearheading groups of a new age/synth revival scene in the USA along with Emeralds and Oneohtrix Point Never, Caboladies have always been equally influenced by the likes of Francois Bayle, Gil Melle, Bernard Parmegiani, and other acousmatic composers, which clearly sets them apart from likeminded artists. |

This sort of playing the game in the way that the game is usually played, i think is usually called a sell-out. And had her intent faltered to the slightest degree that conclusion might be apropos. But it's merely an effort to strip the canvas bare and get face to face with things. And it's Haley's intent that continues to be championed, as it has endured the acts of recording and performing and yet still stands strong and pristine. The rare qualities of strength and character can only be attributed to a rare artist. The modest, clarion sparkle of 'Portrait' would not have been expected, or even achievable, considering the arc of Symphone and Sirenum, and it stands as a cornerstone and a monument, a testament to the daily practice of channeling her 21 year old, roiling emotions into sound recordings. |

The NPS - Nuove Proposte Sonore (New Sound Proposals) Group was founded in Padua (Italy) in 1964 by the composer Teresa Rampazzi together with the visual artist Ennio Chiggio. Working with analogical devices they produced some of the most compelling electronic music of the period, and they soon became one of the most reputed electronic music centers in Italy, together with the S 2 FM by Pietro Grossi in Florence and the SMET by Enore Zaffiri in Turin. With the departure of Chiggio, the years 1969-1970 tranformed it in a female-only collective (Teresa Rampazzi, Serenella Marega and Patrizia Gracis). The two periods were characterized by different instrumentation, and it is surprising how they were able to achieve great results with some simple means. At least in the beginning. In the first period they used a couple of two-tracks tape recorders (Sony 777 and Sony 521), an EICO low frequency generator, a radio station to produce long wavelengths frequencies, a mixer, an oscillator, a Revox, and a self-built loudspeaker. They had to use the stairwell as an echo chamber. In the second one, when the studio was more established, they had six manually-controlled oscillators as well as six modulated ones, a white noise generator, an octave-band filter and a variable one, an amplitude modulator, a noteswitch, a reverb, a 10-channels mixer, a unit for audio signal routing, four tape recorders, a stereo sound system and a frequency meter (during the last years they also bought a 2500 ARP synthesizer). This deluxe LP edition presents the groups compositions for the first time ever. |

October 2005: Seminal German director Christoph Schlingensief (R.I.P. 2010) shoots his latest feature film 'The African Twintowers' in Lüderitz/Namibia with Irm Hermann, Klaus Beyer, Robert Stadlober, Patti Smith...Autumn 2006: Schlingensief approaches Berlin musician/composer Hanno Leichtmann (Groupshow, Static, Denseland) regarding a soundtrack for the film. There were hours and hours of raw material; the concept being a movie with few dialogues and music throughout - a 90 minute psychedelic collage; an associative visual and sonic trip. With the help of John Nijenhuis aka Sir Henry as well as a trio of musicians playing indian music (tabla, sitar, tampura), they started to improvise in Leichtmann's recording studio projecting film sequences on a wall. Within 4 days and nights an enormous amount of tracks had been recorded and several rough mixes had been compiled. After a while though, Schlingensief decided to shift the concept. The film transformed into an art installation with 18 monitors showing sequences simultaneously (presented at the Berlinale and Steirischer Herbst), and later on, a kind of 'Making of...' with 90% off-comments by Christoph Schlingensief and very little music was made. Thus, 'The African Twintowers Suite" represents a lost soundtrack; compiling the most interesting recordings, newly edited, layered, collaged, shortened and mixed between 2009 and 2010. |

He's the sort of guy who might fuck a swan, and then scream a little poem about it. In the sixties his aim was 'to overcome painting on canvas through staging the process of its destruction'. He made rhizomatic structures with scrap iron ("Gerümpelplastiken"), but soon proceeded to the "Aktion" in the vein of the New York Happenings. Gradually, Muehl began to distance himself from "Aktion". He regarded the "happening as a bourgeois artform, mere art". This is an exact reproduction of his 1971 "Psycho Motorik" LP, which documents that very departure. |

RISHAUG, ALEXANDER - SHADOW OF EVENTS
Shadow Of Events is the third album by Oslo, Norway sound artist, producer and musician Alexander Rishaug, following his Asphodel CD Possible Landscape (2004) and 2001's Panorama on the Smalltown Supersound label. The album was recorded over a five year period and mixed in Berlin last year. Not unlike his previous albums but apparently more refined Shadow Of Events combines a warm and organic haunting quality blended with both abstract and concrete tones and subtle digital noises. "Most of the tracks are developed from field recordings, instrument improvisation or live sampling. Then processed and edited with the computer as the main tool. I've used sounds hailing from a dusty rhodes, a lovely guitar, a nervous radio and a lonely piano." Rishaug's music is informed by classic minimal composers such as Steve Reich and Terry Riley as well as 90's electronica acts such as the Oval/Microstoria axis and like-minded but more obscure artists associated with the Mille Plateaux label (remember Neina?) but surely wouldn't be out of place on a contemporary label like Kranky or Type. Repetitive and seemingly simple melodic patterns are combined with (and sometimes obscured by) decaying monlithic drone layers creating a hazy melancholic landscape slowly unfolding its beauty. Granular shoegazy tones are building up in slow-motion recalling the patient yet precise and complex drone works of Stephan Mathieu, William Basinski and Machinefabriek's Dauw album. Alexander Rishaug was part of the improv collective ARM (1996-2006) with Arne Borgan and Are Mokkelbost (Killl) as well as collaborating with Lasse Marhaug on a Lucky Kitchen release. He has remixed metal bands Ulver and She Said Destroy as well as noise duo Jazkamer and Bjorn Hatterud and Conrad Schnitzler's recent collaboration. |

The music of Xela is not easily described. The alias of Type Records main-man John Twells, he has over the last decade moved through a dense fog of musical styles from abstract electronics to rusty soundscapes. In recent years his output has allied itself with darker realms, taking a liberal dose of influence from Norway's darker exponents, but retaining a deep and measured experimental focus. 'The Illuminated' was originally released on cassette, a format very fitting to the gloomy, waterlogged sounds; but having sold out in a matter of days it now recieves the much needed deluxe re-issue treatment. Taking cues from the cracked black metal of Burzum and Striborg and fusing this with heavy, synthesized noise 'The Illuminated' is possibly Xela's darkest, most spine-chilling work to date. We are taken through chiming Nurse With Wound-inspired soundscapes into Middle Eastern marketplaces and through caverns of thick, buzzing synthesized noise on the album's first piece. Entitled 'Black Scripture' this takes the dank religious themes of 'In Bocca Al Lupo' and goes even deeper into the Church dungeons, digging up lost artifacts and the angry spirits that accompany them. The flipside extends this heresy with a throaty vocal and distorted electric guitar, leaving blackened corpses and the traces of a sleepy village in its wake. Italian drummer Andrea Belfi truly drives his new solo release into a poly-rhythmic drum circle from another dimension. The whole work not only sounds wonderful but, more importantly, Andrea Belfi has developed a strong spatial sense characterized by a crystal clear cymbal tone, deep, warm bass drum, drone-like electronica and a never ending groove. Andrea Belfi (1979) has been playing drums since the age of 14. He studied art in Milan and has been working in the experimental music field since 2000. In his live set AB faces the audience with an essential drum set, surrounded by synthesizers, a loop station, some contact microphones, an harmonica and two small-size speakers. The acoustic elements and the electronic ones mingle, intertwine and sometimes switch places: the acoustic sounds are treated as they were electronic, and the actual electronic ones are played at the very moment. Rhythmic patterns go beyond the mere beat as AB shapes them in cycles, ever-circling but ever-changing, both reassuring and surprising. A careful preparatory work, which consists in a previous and much reflected upon selection of emotional scenarios, allows the live set to be spontaneous and to "live the moment", definitively avoiding any over-conceptualization. AB main achievement is the building of "proper" songs through a radical improvisation rather than through the use of fixed and codified elements. |

RISHAUG, ALEXANDER - SHADOW OF EVENTS
Shadow Of Events is the third album by Oslo, Norway sound artist, producer and musician Alexander Rishaug, following his Asphodel CD Possible Landscape (2004) and 2001's Panorama on the Smalltown Supersound label. The album was recorded over a five year period and mixed in Berlin last year. Not unlike his previous albums but apparently more refined Shadow Of Events combines a warm and organic haunting quality blended with both abstract and concrete tones and subtle digital noises. "Most of the tracks are developed from field recordings, instrument improvisation or live sampling. Then processed and edited with the computer as the main tool. I've used sounds hailing from a dusty rhodes, a lovely guitar, a nervous radio and a lonely piano." Rishaug's music is informed by classic minimal composers such as Steve Reich and Terry Riley as well as 90's electronica acts such as the Oval/Microstoria axis and like-minded but more obscure artists associated with the Mille Plateaux label (remember Neina?) but surely wouldn't be out of place on a contemporary label like Kranky or Type. Repetitive and seemingly simple melodic patterns are combined with (and sometimes obscured by) decaying monlithic drone layers creating a hazy melancholic landscape slowly unfolding its beauty. Granular shoegazy tones are building up in slow-motion recalling the patient yet precise and complex drone works of Stephan Mathieu, William Basinski and Machinefabriek's Dauw album. Alexander Rishaug was part of the improv collective ARM (1996-2006) with Arne Borgan and Are Mokkelbost (Killl) as well as collaborating with Lasse Marhaug on a Lucky Kitchen release. He has remixed metal bands Ulver and She Said Destroy as well as noise duo Jazkamer and Bjorn Hatterud and Conrad Schnitzler's recent collaboration. |

Die Schachtel is proud to present Â, a group of young and very talented Italian musicians who, picking up the best of the Italian avantgarde heritage, are able to create a very personal music mixing elements of free form improvisation and experimental rock, with a hint of exotic percussion and electronic background. The result is certainly one of the most fresh and unexpected listening experiences coming from Italy. Â (which is the first and the last letter of some Scandinavian alphabet) is a young trio of musicians on violin, exotic percussions, theremin, guitar, synth and piano, who have created a remarkably original world of sound. Although one can hear occasional influences from kraut rock style and the early minimalism, this sound is uniquely Italian in its sense of sound, space and time. An imaginative, meditative, bizarre, courageous and nostalgic music consisting in spontaneous compositions and improvisations, lately arranged by Xabier Iriondo, and mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi - the result of four or five long free-form improvisations, resonating of minimal drones à la Conrad, largos for piano that sound like a raw Cilio, strange electrified noises, and percussive inventions. And much more. Since some time, we were playing with the idea of launching a series dedicated to the most creative Italian music of to day, and this seemed to be the perfect start. |

"Modes Réels Collectifs" is the first work published in 1981 under the unique banner Vivenza, after he performed in the bands Glace (1976) and Mécanique Populaire (1979). It must be seen as a kind of genuine Manifesto that will then become emblematic of all his work. By suggesting to us, on a philosophical as well as sonorous point of view, an idea of opening to the real directly inspired from the futuristic theories, Vivenza was then presenting to us what he brought from his relatioship with the machines and with the sound of the factories, to make us penetrate the brutal concrete of the heavy industry world, that's to say according to his Modes rels collectifs of existence. This album, by virtue of its initial founder characteristic from 1981, shows this concern about participating to the interaction of the energy of the future, to the reciprocal mediation linked to the productive activity of the world. Like Vivenza will say: By the process of working and through the strengths of work, in the sonorous magma of the industrial society, at the heart of the forges and weirs, of the rolling mills and power stations, reactors and artificial intelligence, nature reveals its dynamic characteristic. The power of machines, and of industry in general, are the truth of the world. "Back in 1975 when "Suoni di frontiera" ("Borderline Sounds") was released, Claudio Rocchi was already a well known figure in the Italian pop scene. In the late 60's Rocchi had burst onto the scene as a member of Milanese psych-prog legends Stormy Six. He performed on their "Le Idee di Oggi Per la Musica di Domani" LP in 1969 and soon after, the acid folk of "Viaggio", Rocchi's solo debut, was released in 1970. That same year Rocchi hosted an influential radio show on the Italian national broadcasting station, RAI. 1971 brought the simply awesome "Volo Magico No.1". An acknowledged classic, it emerged as not dissimilar to Roy Harper's landmark song cycle of progressive/psych folk, "Stormcock." The album - especially the epic 18 minute title track - established Rocchi as the Italian psych-folk minstrel par excellence. Then, after traveling to India, improvisation and Eastern philosophies began to shape his next few albums, "Essenza" from 1973 being a high point. 1974's "Il miele dei pianeti le isole le api" ("The Honey of The Planets The Islands The bees") featured guitars, tabla, strings and percussion but the following album from 1975, "Rocchi" was, according to the man himself, "a real U turn".It featured a handful of songs, though Rocchi baffled his hardcore following by introducing cut-ups, environmental sounds and analogue synthesizers recorded at his home studio using a Revox A70. This brings us to the experimental electronics of his next album "Suoni di frontiera". Consisting of 16 "sketches" made at home, this recording went much further out than "Rocchi". Described by so-called authorities to be naïve and unsophisticated, to these ears "Suoni" is a highly personal and extremely charming collection of psychedelically damaged constructs. All of Rocchi's celebrated and highly recognized vocals were now processed and modulated - if they were heard at all. They sat alongside his spacey and dislocated homespun synth stylings that sound simultaneously retro and futuristic. What more can one ask for? Rocchi described the release as "diving deeper into psychoacoustics, a practical theory on healing music, mind resonances, inner flows". Yep. And thanks to the good folk at Die Schachtel, another crucial piece of the 70's Italian puzzle has been unearthed for our pleasure. Dig in." -Oren Ambarchi, Melbourne, February 2009.
