Formed in Dordrecht in 1968, Cosmic Dealer were one of the most gifted Dutch bands to emerge from Hollands rich psychedelic scene. Their only album, Crystallization, has come to be regarded as an underground classic with copies changing hands among collectors for ungodly sums of money. Allying powerful heavy rock with softer acoustic sections, along with some sublime three-part harmonies, the album is reminiscent of the Pretty Things Parachute. Highlights include the magnificent Child Of The Golden Sun, the West Coast-flavored If There Is Nothing Behind The Hills and the mesmeric title track, which demonstrates that psychedelic rock was still very much alive and well in the Netherlands in 1971. This expanded, double-disc 180gm vinyl edition presents the Crystallization LP in its entirety, along with a trove of previously unreleased demos and live tracks, all mastered in ear-caressing fidelity from the original tapes. Here is an obscure slice of late-'60s killer Brazilian psychedelia! Little is known about OS BRAZOES, except that they formed in Rio De Janeiro late in 1969 and that their main claim to fame was being picked by Gal Costa as her backing band when she was making her early, and hugely, influential forays into Tropicalia - her best and most psychedelic effort being the 'Tuareg' song. It turns out her sidemen had a pretty great album in them as well; they created a synthesis of North American rock & roll and native Brazilian styles, with results similar to those being explored by Tropicalia ringleaders Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, whom the band cover on this record, and Som Imaginario. With buzzing fuzz guitars, pop vocals, spaced-out effects and exotic percussions, the band blended ethnic rhythms with some jazzy, western-influenced pop-rock before launching into weird euphoric space trips! |

White Manna plays space rock using a scorched-earth policy. Opening track "Acid Head" is not false advertising. It begins with an amiable boogie-rock amble before tumescing into stentorian, Loop-like riffing. You know that you can count on White Manna enveloping your head in the Asheton brothers genius string thuggery and convulsing you with the primordial throb harnessed by the Stooges (and, later, Hawkwind), before sonic irony was invented. For most of White Manna, the group focuses on mantric riffs that accelerate into speed-freak, headbanging frenzies. But on "Don't Gun Us Down," they throw a change-up, setting the science-fictional scene with billowing solar winds before shifting into a mantric cruiser over which a wah-wah guitar articulates a hedonist manifesto-something along the lines of "fire all of your guns at once and explode into space." We should probably blame our long-term zombified friends at HOODED MENACE for this but one of the (many) sides of seeing their latest split 12 sold out in just a couple of days (!) means two things: first, that the Blind Dead are still damn sexy beasts to some. And two, that as many people got exposed to the earth shattering power of Helsinkis HORSE LATITUDES through the shamanic 10 minutes long sludge of "Flame Of Will". A lot have been said about the fact this unusual Finnish lot, how they dared putting together a three-person unit that features no guitar yet TWO basses, how they've taken their name from an old Jim Morrison poem, how they seem less to come up with actual songs but more with apocalyptic incantations about the forthcoming end of the world or how they sound like OM on cracks or their fellow citizens FLESHPRESS after a ten days walk through the desert with no water. Their second proper full-length Awakening just confirms all those preconceptions - in spade. Clocking at little over 45 minutes with six long dirges, Awakening might be just that - the entrance to a whole different sonic vortex. Listening to their hypnotic yet slow-as-fuck groove is like free falling with your eyes: you have no choice but to let go. And it seems theres no way to go but down here. So submit yourself. |

Years On Earth's electronic, experimental and industrial approach to their music reminds one of a mix of early Cabaret Voltaire, Eyeless in Gaza and Throbbing Gristle. It can be considered as an alchemistic creation, forming something very unique and amazing in mood and atmosphere produced and experienced by the listener. As Mutant Sounds website stated: "...wonderful, dark, claustrophobic, scary atmosphere... an absolutely unknown gem!" Years On Earth (Bob Roke & Mebz) have been active between 1979-1984 producing three official tapes plus many hours of unreleased recordings. They hand-built or modified most of their musical equipment and recorded in a deeply analogue way in their makeshift home studio. Their three official cassettes from 1980, 1981 and 1982 were very well received critically by reviewers in fanzines and the music press alike and they continued to develop musically and sonically; mixing found-sounds, synthesisers, drum machines, treated guitars, plaintive vocals and eventually even lo-fi (by today's standards) sampling, coupled with quirky song structures that ranged from minimalistic to almost cinematic over the course of these three tapes. Stick It In Your Ear fanzine said at the time, "For a band to come along with something as sharp and original as this is indeed reason to celebrate". The first three LP-sides of this set concentrate on each of the official tapes released. The fourth side is committed to previously unpublished recordings from between 1979 and 1984. The superb monochrome gatefold cover artwork is based on the original cassette inlays and compliments the music beautifully. This release is one of the most important and highly anticipated by Frank of VOD Records as Years on Earth's music helped him during his sleepless nights, suffering from a major tinnitus condition in 2007, by playing their tapes all the time. VOD had wanted to release their music for more than four years but no one seemed to know of there whereabouts. Then about one year ago Bob by chance contacted Frank as he wanted to inform him about the cassette reissues on Calypso Now from Switzerland and finally Frank was able to realise this project and bring together what belongs together. |
