THE CLASSIC LEGENDARY ALBUM FEATURING CYRILLE VERDEAUX, MEMBERS OF GONG AND OTHER TOP MUSICIANS OF THE FRENCH PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND OF THE 70'S! Cyrille Verdeaux is a classical trained keyboard player who plays organ in Babylone, a band from the Rock pas Dgnr collective, related to the Actuel magazine, at the beginning of the 1970s. In 1972 the band splits and Verdeaux joins Barricade for six months. In 1973, Cyrille records a demo of one of his own compositions for piano. Actuels music journalist -who also plays bass in Dragon- Jean-Pierre Lentin suggests Verdeaux shall send his work to the new-born UK label Virgin. That same year 1973 Virgin has just launched its first release, Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells. It becomes a top seller very fast, helping the consolidation of the project led by future millionaire Richard Branson, and with the good taste of his partner Simon Draper, Virgin will start to add other delicatessen to a catalogue that will have no equal in the history of underground music. Through Tim Blake, Gongs synth player at the time (one of Bransons first artists), Cyrille Verdeaux signs for Virgin in 1974. That same year Clearlight Symphony is recorded (clearlight stands for a type of LSD). For its recording sessions Cyrille uses two different line-ups, each in charge of each of the two parts of the work. On one side theres ex Babylone members Christian Boul, Lard Frees Gilbert Artman and bassman Martin Isaacs. They record along with Verdeaux on Virgins Manor studio. The other side will be canned at Kaleidophon studios, ran by White Noises David Vorhaus, where Cyrille is joined by Gong members Tim Blake, Steve Hillage and Didier Malherbe. Verdeaux's original idea was to feature the Manor studio recordings on side A, but thinking heads at Virgin thought better to flip sides to make more profit of Gongs commercial success. A curious decision, since you normally dont promote an LP with the same strategy you would use for a single! Clearlight Symphony was released in 1975 with small echo in press and public, although it has nowadays reached a cult status among followers of the symphonic - cosmic - progressive genres. In what refers to its musical content, Clearlight Symphony is a completely opposed concept to that of the other project in which Verdeaux was involved at the time: the collective album Delired Chameleon Family (also reissued recently on Wah Wah Records), a brilliant psychedelic dive into the French underground of the seventies. Clearlight Symphony, instead, is a much more author-controled work, where all the musicians adapt themselves to Verdeauxs circular, systematic composition. The alleged and collected improvisations, dissonances and atonalities (superb Boul), the rhythmic tension of Artmans enigmatic, Heldonian drumming, Blakes environmental VCS3 modulations, Hillages content cosmicism, Verdeauxs crescendos and counterpoints. Plus echoes of Dbussy, Terry Riley, Soft Machine, Magma, and why not, the aforementioned Tubular Bells. In short, a work of honesty, an album of its time. |

'Pan' is the first solo effort from Jonas Munk released in his own name. Jonas Munk is a musician and producer from Odense, Denmark who has been active in a wide range of musical styles for the past decade. In the European psych-rock community he is mostly known as the guitarplayer in the respected stoner/jazz/krautrock-outfit Causa Sui as well as related projects such as Chicago Odense Ensemble, a joint session project featuring members of Causa Sui, Chicago Underground Collective and Tortoise, which resulted in a 2LP released in 2011. 'Pan' simultaneously betrays his connections to the European stoner-rock community and the world of electronic ambient music and this album combines ideas from both worlds, while the result really doesn't belong in neither of them. With the album's motoric analogue synthesizer patterns and its warm, fuzzy drones the influence from 1970's German synthesizer- and new age music, such as early Kraftwerk, Ashra and Popol Vuh, is apparent from the first note. But there's also definite traits of American styles running through this album, from the flowing optimism of Alice Coltrane and Terry Riley to the modern-day psychedelia of Comets on Fire and Bardo Pond. |

Musically inspired by Sandy Bull, Popol Vuh, and Neil Young, this explores the depths & expands the boundaries of ambient and drone music. Through the haze of tremelo and twang, Porras (BARN OWL) hopes to bring a dark edge to the sunny, "far out" sentiment that is usually associated with West Coast guitar. Also, in combining Americana with the gratuitous fuzz and feedback characteristic of modern Japanese psych guitar, he intends to take from the past, in order to move forward, and to create a sound that draws from the dark shadows cast under the romantic notion of California as an open expanse, the final frontier. |

DISASTER - WAR CRY
Originally released in 1991 War Cry was one of the first purely DISCHARGE influenced bands to span what later become popularly known as D-Beat. Hailing from Halifax, they were part of a new wave of raging UK bands with worshiped "Why" as the finest piece on non-music ever recorded. DISASTER faded into obscurity shortly after releasing their MLP and War Cry became a cult record among raw hardcore fans worldwide counting visionaries as Kawakami from DISCLOSE as one of their biggest fans. Finally reissued on CD in Japan in 2006 with extra live sets and unreleased songs LVEUM decide to bring this record back to life on its original format. This reissue comes with an extra Flexi Disc including two Discharge cover songs ( "Mania from Conquest" off the V/A Discharged CD and the unreleased "Fight Back" from the War Cry MLP session) as well as "Death Race" from the "A Nightmare on Albion Street" compilation LP. Although Ike Reiko was a mere 17 years of age when she recorded Kokotsu no Sekai, she was already a star in the world of Japanese erotic movies. Despite the tough-gal image, the music is pretty darn life-affirming, so don't think for a second you're getting an easy listening album here - this is about as sexual as music can get. Throw 'French Kiss' out of the window and kiss goodbye to your Serge Gainsbourg records goodbye, Ike Reiko is more sizzling than a branding iron as it makes it's mark on the farmer's herd. The sex is literally dripping from every note on this record - I'm told that the style is 'Iroke Kayôkyoku' or erotic kayôkyoku (kayôkyoku being a style of Japanese pop) but the sort of naïve jazz and pseudo spy theme movie music is all draped in a shroud of sexual shouts, screams and coos from the clearly excited Reiko. One must assume that she was in some kind of state of euphoria in the recording studio from the evidence on offer here, either that or she's a pretty realistic faker - it's a smouldering collision and that's about all that needs to be said. 'Kôkotsu no Sekai' has to be one of the finest gifts for the music fan in search of that killer oddity. |
