0372702 LP ANM 6 ACID NIGHTMARE	ALPHA CENTAURI - ALPHA CENTAURI Alpha Centauri was formed in Greeley, Colorado in 1971. The band performed its hard driving rock throughout the American Midwest for years opening for artists such as STYX and URIAH HEEP. With a fairly strong US following, the band moved to Canada where they began to write original material. The result was 1977's long awaited eponymous debut on Salt Records. With the release of the album came more concerts as well as several radio and television appearances including the Canadian TV special "Alpha Centauri In Concert" from 1978. The band was then aiming for the UK, but management problems and road burnout led to the band returning to the USA, appearing on TV's 'Rock and Roll America'. Alpha Centauri stayed on the road until 1983 when they finally broke up. In the '90's a resurgence of sorts occurred following a glowing review of their sole album in the International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal stating them as the "Worlds best undiscovered Pomp band". 70's Hard Rock aficionados began scouring the globe for their only album and in 1995, was issued on CD. Nowadays a rare sought after gem in the collector's market, Acid Nightmare thought it would be the right time to reissue this Hard Prog Pomp masterpiece on glorious vinyl. The trio of Aidan Baker, Christopher Kukiel, and Richard Baker return to the quiet with hushed tribal timbres, however, these ambiences are riveting in a way that that other ambiences are not, probably because the group does not think with an ambient attitude. This is the sound of mining midnight. In a universe where experimentalism is often just a nice way of saying "boring," hearing seasoned musicians actually craft something interesting sans computers is like having an orgasm. 0372694 LP GUESS 100 4040824082635 GUERSSEN	CRYSTALLINE - AXE MUSIC Axe (also known as Axe Music and Crystalline by the time they recorded their rare acetate) were an obscure British psych band leaded by acid-rock guitar player extraordinaire Tony Barford and graced by Vivienne Jones ethereal vocals. In 1970, they recorded a demo album of which only 12 copies were pressed on a 10" acetate. Here's the first ever straight reissue of this legendary artifact, as the previous "reissue" on the Kissing Spell label was altered without the band consent and included new remixed tracks, added echo / phasing effects, altered song titles... Here' you'll find the acetate recordings on its pure form: 100% unadulterated heavy psych and acid-rock sounds full of raw, fuzzed-out guitars and dreamy female vocals. Four impressive original songs plus a long, psyched to the max cover of Love's "A house is not a motel" which has to be heard to be believed. Carefully remastered from an original copy (master tapes were lost) in 24-bit. Unfortunately, no masters survived and no clean copy is known to exist of the original 10", but youll get the best result for the possibilities. New artwork (the original acetate came in blank sleeve), insert with unseen pictures and liner notes by Paul Cross. And if all that wasn't enough, this release includes a CD with the same album plus a bonus 8 minute video track featuring colour silent footage of Crystalline / Axe playing live in 1970 with audio from the acetate added. PLANT & SEE was a short lived group from North Carolina, consisting of Willie French Lowery (guitar, vocals and composer), Carol Fitzgerald (vocals), Forris Fulford (drums) and Ronald Seiger (bass). Plant & See had a powerful and soulful sound, with stormy guitar work, appealing vocal harmonies and pleasantly loose drumming. Lowery's native American roots definitely were a source of inspiration for the material, which is intense and poppy at the same time, as well as psychy and country-influenced. Soon after the release of their under promoted (White Whale was on the brink of dissolution) self titled LP, the band changed their name to Lumbee. "Contrasto" is a sort of apocryphal compilation, released by the record label right when the band was enjoying the success of the song "Piccola Katy", which is present on the LP and is still today one of I Pooh's most famous hymn. The album also contains demos for a future release, and in fact it's possible to recognize some riffs and melodies in some of the band's following LP's. And so it came to pass that Evans reclaimed his birth name of Marcus, and recorded a very mellow LP in 1969 for Kinetic Records, a label formed by the Kinetic Playground Ballroom in Chicago. Like much of Marcus work, the album is a fascinating relic of a particular time and place, in this instance San Franciscos Haight-Ashbury district in the post-Summer of Love era. The Marcus LP is richly orchestrated psychedelic-folk music, with a pronounced Donovan and/or Tim Harden flavor to it, something that did not escape its creator. The mood is dreamy, the songs reflective, the voice vibrato, the album a yin to the yang of the Freak Scene "Psychedelic Psoul" album which precedes it by two years. So we have the hot and aggressive Freak Scene album contrasted-some might say perfectly balanced-by the diffuse and tranquil Marcus album two years later. To our mind, further proof of the excellence of the artistic mind behind both albums. This is the first actual re-issue of the vastly under-rated Marcus album since 1969; the only previous CD edition used alternate takes and not the album versions. Our fulsome edition indulges any completionist fantasies we might harbor, as it also serves up thirty-two bonus tracks, nearly two hours of alternate takes and acoustic demos (plus a few non-album tracks). There are guitar/voice demos recorded several months before Kinetic came along and offered a deal; other home demos have Marcus with acoustic guitar, bass and cello. That year there were some 2800 summer students attending a 6 week summer arts scholarship session - 1800 females and 900 males. Smack was born and played a gig several weeks later and the next thing you know they were all 'stars' of the campus. Someone from the university arranged for them to go in and record an album. An original Smack LP is rare as gold dust. We have only seen 2 copies for sale the past 15 years for massive money. The music are great cover version played with extra heavy fuzz guitar, vocals, bass & drums. Those version of Cream and Hendrix songs are killer. The whole album (very well produced) has a one of a kind Psychedelic feel. There are not many cover albums which gives you another perspective on those known songs. Thanks to their undeniable musical talent, which allowed them to be taken seriously in the folk scene, the industrious Roche sisters career began when they were young. The duo began by singing Christmas carols, doo-wop song syllable puzzles, and tricky barbershop harmonies. They finally caught the attention of Paul Simon, who brought the gifted girls in as backup singers on his LP "There Goes Rhymin Simon", and was primarily responsible for the birth of their first recording. The lavishly produced album achieved high critical acclaim. Although it was a worthy professional debut, the public was hesitant to buy the album. The specialist magazine Rolling Stone commented drily and somewhat at a loss that the Roches werent everyones cup of tea. Maggie and Terre Roche are a well-rehearsed vocal team however: with a range from hazy, finely balanced voices singing as one, right up to pearly, radiant brilliance, the Roche sisters enthusiastically penned a songbook which is almost without exception their very own creation. Mechanical bluegrass music ("Wigglin Man"), a steam-train character ("If You Emptied ...") and a somewhat crude and unrefined country aura make the subtle lyrics easily accessible to all, but the LP also offers the listener wonderfully ill-humoured verse ("The Mountain People") and story-like prose ("West Virginia"). This is a truly exceptional album, and well worth being discovered! It can be considered as one of the most radical and influential German progressive, avantgarde bands. Its music-approach and playing-techniques are related to Stockhausen and the group "Nuova Consonanza" & its influences and protagonistic characteristics in music can still be found in works of many avantgarde & industrial-bands of today. Conrad's continous working-partners over the years have been Klaus Freudigmann and Wolfgang Seidel. 0372573 2xLP VOD 101 VINYL ON DEMAND	YEARS ON EARTH - THE STRUCTURE OF CHANCE (2LP) Years On Earth's electronic, experimental and industrial approach to their music reminds one of a mix of early Cabaret Voltaire, Eyeless in Gaza and Throbbing Gristle. It can be considered as an alchemistic creation, forming something very unique and amazing in mood and atmosphere produced and experienced by the listener. As Mutant Sounds website stated: "...wonderful, dark, claustrophobic, scary atmosphere... an absolutely unknown gem!" Years On Earth (Bob Roke & Mebz) have been active between 1979-1984 producing three official tapes plus many hours of unreleased recordings. They hand-built or modified most of their musical equipment and recorded in a deeply analogue way in their makeshift home studio. Their three official cassettes from 1980, 1981 and 1982 were very well received critically by reviewers in fanzines and the music press alike and they continued to develop musically and sonically; mixing found-sounds, synthesisers, drum machines, treated guitars, plaintive vocals and eventually even lo-fi (by today's standards) sampling, coupled with quirky song structures that ranged from minimalistic to almost cinematic over the course of these three tapes. Stick It In Your Ear fanzine said at the time, "For a band to come along with something as sharp and original as this is indeed reason to celebrate". The first three LP-sides of this set concentrate on each of the official tapes released. The fourth side is committed to previously unpublished recordings from between 1979 and 1984. The superb monochrome gatefold cover artwork is based on the original cassette inlays and compliments the music beautifully. This release is one of the most important and highly anticipated by Frank of VOD Records as Years on Earth's music helped him during his sleepless nights, suffering from a major tinnitus condition in 2007, by playing their tapes all the time. VOD had wanted to release their music for more than four years but no one seemed to know of there whereabouts. Then about one year ago Bob by chance contacted Frank as he wanted to inform him about the cassette reissues on Calypso Now from Switzerland and finally Frank was able to realise this project and bring together what belongs together. The legendary minimal synth/wave band from Philadelphia Crash Course in Science formed in 1979. Choosing toy instruments and live drums out of necessity, CCIS began by experimenting with a series of recording devices. The toy instruments gave way to crude drum machines and "Frankenstein"-type homemade instruments. Their first 7" 'Cakes in the Home' introduced listeners to a noisy, unpredictable world. This 7" went on to become a classic minimal synth record that should be included in any vinyl-collection. The record contains those tracks plus additional rehearsal tracks from the early beginning. In 1981 they took a new direction with a darker, more sinister sound. The result was the 12" "Signals from Pier Thirteen" (also included in this set). The songs 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns' gained exposure through club play during the 80s and still sound fresh and up-to-date. The set furthermore contains several demo tracks from the 'Signals from Pier Thirteen' period (1981). The 'Near Marineland' tracks contain completed mixes of previously unreleased studio material (along with some remixes of this material) arranged and produced by John Wicks, CCIS's original producer. As a special treat Soundway here serve up three courses of Panamanian calypso-funk and Caribbean soul from down on the isthmus. The 1960s and 70s were fertile times for Panamanian music as Soundways three volumes of the much loved Panama! series of compilations has proved. Being the bridge between North and South America, Panama became a melting pot of musical influences, with local bands playing to entertain not only Panamanians, but also the hordes of sailors that passed through the canal from all over the world. Consequently, the Combos Nacionales (as the family of local bands became known) stuffed as many styles as possible into their repertoires from cumbia to salsa, reggae, calypso and funk. On the A-side Fredrick Clarkes alter-ego Chombo turns his attention to a belting calypsosoul-funk cut with Soul Chombo from his extremely scarce 1972 LP Chombos Show. On the B-side we stray more into Northern Soul style territory with another 2 very-hard-to-find cuts originally released only as 45s in Panama at the time. Ralph Weeks is another artist who featured with Fredrick Clarke on Panama! Volume 3 and is perhaps best known for singing with the famous Exciters combo. With his soul cut Were Still Strong youd be forgiven for thinking he wasn't based in Miami, New York or Chicago rather than Panama City. Lastly the enigmatic and unknown artist Jungle Rat USA gives us a great piece of Latin tinged dancefloor soul with Just Love One Another, recorded at top Panamanian producer Eduardo Balito Chans studio in the early 70s. By 1954, a trumpet-slinging white boy who looked like James Dean had climbed to the very pinnacle of the West Coast jazz scene, winning that year's most prestigious poll for "best jazz trumpet player" and national acclaim for his first vocal album, Chet Baker Sings. The album was wildly successful and his label, Pacific Jazz, quickly put jazz music's new darling back into the studio for a follow-up. The resulting album, 1955s Sings And Plays With Bud Shank, Russ Freeman And Strings, was recorded at Capitol Studios in L.A. over the course two sessions. For the first session Baker brought in a large string session, as well as Bud Shank (later of "California Dreamin" fame) on flute, Red Mitchell on bass, and long-time cohort Russ Freeman on piano, but for the second session Baker brought in only Freeman, Carson Smith (bass) and Bob Neal (drums). Interestingly, it is this second, more intimate session that produced the best results, with songs like "Lets Get Lost", "Just Friends" and "Long Ago And Far Away" becoming signature tunes for Baker for the rest of his career. They create a sense of undermining the status quo, which is pretty punk, but then they screw things up by undermining the punk status quo. They're not really a guitar band, although they do play guitars of a sort, handcrafted by Boston sculptor and founder Jason Sidney Sanford. Performed on the synths that would later define Acid House, the Roland TB-303 and TR-808, the album sounds light years ahead of its time with its repetitive beats and hypnotic electronic melodies. Its maker, Bollywood session musician Charanjit Singh, set out to translate ancient Indian classical Ragas to the modern synthesizer and in doing so seems to have invented House music along the way. The 10 tracks make a consistent listen from A to Z. Its restrained minimalism and lack of cheesiness makes it incredibly contemporary, sounding animated, fluid and unabashedly alive.
