They called themselves THE SLOTHS. Only a few hundred singles were pressed, some of them with a picture sleeve they designed and printed themselves on an old mimeograph machine. By the end of 1966 the Sloths had broken up, and were all but forgotten. Four decades later the Sloths only record has taken on an almost mythical quality among a new generation of garage rock fans and musicians. "Makin' Love" has been covered by scores of bands, including the seminal Detroit rockers the Gories, who recorded it for their album I Know You Fine, But How You Doin'. Original copies of the Sloths single with picture sleeve are now selling for astronomical sums. The most recent copy to surface on eBay fetched $6,500.00. Now UT Records has reissued this mega-rare single on 7-inch vinyl in all its primitive, jungle beatin' teen garage majesty, along with the dead-cool folk-rock flipside, "You Mean Everything" (amazingly, never reissued until now!). As a matter of fact, as if striving from being free from any outside pressure or hype, they simply set out to release a straight, balls-to-the-walls, no-frills-and-no-bullshit-allowed METAL album. Sitting comfortably somewhere between early MEGADETH tainted with the evil approach of SLAYER and the typically German fury of SODOM, the beauty of this raging little fucker is that it doesnt even pretend to step forward unmasked. Granted with one of the most literate cover out there, full of songtitles alone that just dont beat around the bush and tell you straight what the score is ("Pain And Suffering", "Shrapnel" or "Thrash And Destroy" just to name a few) and even rougher and rawer than its sophomore The Antique Witcheries released two years later, There Will Be Blood shows no mercy. Musically you will hear groovy doom in the vein of Cathedral, threatening sludge and hardcore vocals courtesy of Mar Scurr. So, Centurions Ghost is also quite original next to being heavy. But they also incorporate cool dissonant chords and long, extended instrumental passages of pretty pastoral arpeggios and delicate melody, but where a lot of bands that use quiet melodic parts to build up into loud, epic crescendos, Tekhton generally use them to wind down a song that started off crushing. Long drawn out droning riffs alternate with more traditional Sabbathian hooks and some angular twists and turns, and the vocals are a strained gruff roar that reminds me of someone, but I can't put my finger on it. At various points, Tekhton remind me of Melvins, Cathedral, and Mogwai, a combination of quiet dreamy instrumentals, lumbering intricate sludge rock and primordial doom, but they don't actually sound like any of 'em, instead coming out with a debut that stands as one of the more creative sludge/doom albums. They formed in 2010 when Dan Weltman (aka Hollowbody) recruited his friend Mog Fry (The Wraiths/Ukeytronica) to help record a soundtrack for a budget slasher movie involving a homicidal nun. Sadly no Baftas resulted, but this bonding process led to the creation of several more lost soundtracks. F.i. songs centred on two voices projecting a vision of widescreen heartache as seen through rain streaked semi-detached windows. Their sound, awash in melancholy folk and sumptuous pop arrangements, bears the influence of mavericks such as Basil Kirchin, Clive Palmer and Moondog, with tips of the hat to Francoise Hardy, The Left Banke and The Pastels. The Spectrum side sees a debut airing for the full length version of live favourite "Mary", previously released as a nagging teaser intro / outro to the great "Indian Giver" CD collaboration with Jim Dickinson a couple of years back. A beautiful 7 minute ode to Kraftwerk and Suicide via a passing nod to Stereolab and Neu! that debuts on wax and as a full length take here, exclusively. Put simply, this is just ridiculously awesome.. The reverse side features an exclusive Sonic Boom remix of the wonderful "Red Moon" from the imminent, glorious Cheval full length. New York based Christopher Porpora has previously released some wonderful singles on Static Caravan and Trensmat, leading in turn to a full length release on Dean Warehams "Double Feature" label. Whether one scribes term "delicate, druggy, slow core folk" sits true, remains a matter for debate, but either way this has an air of a Nick Drake tune around it, with added Sonic Boom Elektronik impetus. "Quiet Birds." is a hazy electronic, vaguely psych work out with vocals by Ivan Ink and Pen. The flip is a wholly different sonic experience. "At Home with Owls" starts off all strange and hallucinatory but soon the drums, swirling organ and moogs take over, -reminiscent of some kraut themed, motorik 60s horror soundtrack. Dressed up in trademark, lovingly created packaging consisting of hand drawn spirograph inserts, hammer card sleeves and half white, half clear wax, numbered to 400 copies, with none of that download or cd nonsense. New up on The GPS is a beautiful new Jonas Reinhardt 12" mini EP - following hot on the heels of their acclaimed Not Not Fun LP 'Music For The Tactile Dome' earlier this year, not to mention essential previous outings on Kranky and KRAAK. Initially a project launched by San Francisco based Jesse Reiner, who began writing and creating analog synthesiser music over 10 years ago whilst studying music synthesis at the Harvard Electronic Music Centre. (Recently extended to a 4 piece for the road and future recording, by one time and current members of Trans Am, Mi Ami, Citay and 3 Leafs amongst others). 2 deep trip kosmische pieces, heavy on rich Cyborg-esque swells and pulsing drones, expansive simmer and swelling kraut soundscapes aimed for the stars. Hypnotic, warm and melodic with a celestial eeriness. Shades of Froese and Schulze figure for sure, with passing nods also perhaps to some of the later Sky oeuvre; "Sonnenlicht", "Synthesist", later Cluster etc. Cut and mastered at Abbey Road, this one looks just beautiful too. Side A of this 12 is cut as a 7" played at 45 and Side B cut as a 10" at 33. 11+ mins of music overall. Both sides featuring on disc etching from GPS head, Dom, also at Abbey Road. An incredible record in top opening pro-printed sleeves in a numbered edition of 500 on vinyl only.

RADIO BIRDMAN - LIVE IN TEXAS
LP including free download code. Radio Birdman's new release, Live In Texas, was recorded during the North American phase of the band's last world tour in June 2007. The recording is sure to be of great interest to fans as it will provide a unique glimpse into this iconic band's intense final incarnation. The sound is stripped down and raw, bringing a return to the band's basic twin guitar attack. The line-up features original members Rob Younger (vocals), Deniz Tek (guitar) and Chris Masuak (guitar), along with long standing member Jim Dickson (bass) and drummer Russell Hopkinson. The idea to record was initiated by the staff of Houston's Radio KPFT 90.1 FM with the intention of having a quality 'live' broadcast of the band's two Texas shows, legendary Emo's in Austin and The Meridian in Houston, available for broadcast on their regular Radio Sessions At Sugar Hill show. The ensuing care taken in the mixing at Sugar Hill finds Live In Texas sounding clear and powerful with a loose and ragged edge of a band playing with furious intensity and driving song tempos hard and fast. The set features a balance of new and old, with songs drawn from each prior stage of the band's tumultuous existence. New cover versions appearing here include The Who's Circles, The Kinks' Til the End of the Day and the set closer, Blue Oyster Cult's Hot Rails to Hell. As a bonus the sleeve art and booklet features spectacular unreleased live photos. Fans can also look forward to next year's ultimate reissues of the band's 70's albums. Included in these reissues will be recent mixes from original master tapes of 20 plus studio out-takes as well as a superlative 70 minutes of their historic December 1977 Paddington Town Hall concert. All tracks are previously unreleased. It is expected the music will be accompanied by a DVD of vintage footage and initially come packaged as a limited edition box set. Tracklist: 1. 0063750 CD CITCD 539 9399612556823 CITADEL	NEW CHRISTS - DIVINE RITES The New Christs were originally formed by Radio Birdman and New Race vocalist Rob Younger after he was offered the support spot on Iggy Pop's Australian tour of 1984. The other members had played in groups such as Celibate Rifles, Lime Spiders and Hoodoo Gurus. The tour proved a success and the band stayed together, recording the two singles Like A Curse and Born Out Of Time for Sydney independent label Citadel Records. These releases gained acclaim for their tough and uncompromising nature and were soon released in Europe by French based label Sonics. With the prospect of an album deal and European tour possible, the other members however chose to return to their other band interests. Younger was left to pursue a career producing some of the finest upcoming Australian alternative bands. In 1986 Barracudas bass player Jim Dickson returned to Australia from the UK and together with Younger started a new line-up. Featured were Charlie Owen, a gifted but as yet unknown guitarist and drummer Louis Burdett who soon left and was replaced by Nick Fisher who had previously played with Ed Kuepper and Wet Taxis. Over the next three years, the band released a series of hard hitting singles; Black Hole, Headin' South and the EP Dropping Like Flies. These new tracks were compiled under the title Divine Rites and released in Europe as a mini-album thus allowing the group to tour there for the first time. The group then went on to record the landmark album Distemper but soon broke up, leaving Younger again with a long period of inactivity. Following the breakup all of the band's early tracks were compiled onto CD for the first time and released in 1990 under the title Divine Rites through Citadel's Germany imprint. The recording is sure to be of great interest to fans as it will provide a unique glimpse into this iconic band's intense final incarnation. The sound is stripped down and raw, bringing a return to the band's basic twin guitar attack. The line-up features original members Rob Younger (vocals), Deniz Tek (guitar) and Chris Masuak (guitar), along with long standing member Jim Dickson (bass) and drummer Russell Hopkinson. The idea to record was initiated by the staff of Houston's Radio KPFT 90.1 FM with the intention of having a quality 'live' broadcast of the band's two Texas shows, legendary Emo's in Austin and The Meridian in Houston, available for broadcast on their regular Radio Sessions At Sugar Hill show. The ensuing care taken in the mixing at Sugar Hill finds Live In Texas sounding clear and powerful with a loose and ragged edge of a band playing with furious intensity and driving song tempos hard and fast. The set features a balance of new and old, with songs drawn from each prior stage of the band's tumultuous existence. New cover versions appearing here include The Who's Circles, The Kinks' Til the End of the Day and the set closer, Blue Oyster Cult's Hot Rails to Hell. As a bonus the sleeve art and booklet features spectacular unreleased live photos. Fans can also look forward to next year's ultimate reissues of the band's 70's albums. The band themselves were as surprised as everyone else by this development. At the time there was no thought of an ongoing future, only a wait and see approach with the focus being solely on a successful completion of the tour. After all, this was the tour that should have taken place way back in 1978 after their well documented break up and they wanted it to be as good as possible with no damage to their mythology. During the pre-tour rehearsal time, there had been discussion as to whether recording live material for strictly archival purposes should be considered but nothing definite agreed upon. When Melbournes Radio Triple R approached the band's management regarding an appearance on their Caught In The Act live music feature, a window of opportunity opened. Venues were opening to what would become a flood of raw and energetic music. After splitting up in England, Radio Birdman's surviving members individually drifted back to Sydney in mid to late 1978. Hundreds of punk and loud high energy rock bands had appeared on the scene, easily going through doors that had been kicked open two years earlier. Many were copies of the style-obsessed English punk scene. Others slavishly copied their (often narrow) perception of what they thought Birdman had been. Some would say that the DIY ethos, not artistic genre, was the Radio's most lasting legacy. Most missed the point. Radio Birdman was a much more musical entity than the razor blade vanguard of punk. The band's demise - and posthumous growth of its legend - left a vacuum in Sydney that demanded to be filled. In a sense, the Visitors did just that. Thanks to this re-issue, the Visitors live on in the recorded sense. A band, or some manifestation of it, may one day play again. It's not been ruled out. Mark sisto (lead vocal and former Radio Birdman Minister of Defence), for one, is moved by the level of interest the band still prompts. "It surprises me and it's touching that there's been as much positive feedback from it as it has gotten older. Why? Perhaps it's because people were so young then, I suppose.
