This is a fantastic two-sider of deep-n-dirty early 70's Afro-funk that has few peers. This is a truly deluxe release - fully licensed from the band, painstakingly remastered, pressed with UK style punch-out center and housed in a beautiful custom picture sleeve and limited to 1500 copies. Possibly the most deeply funky RSD release ever! Most Eastern Nigerians of a certain age hold a special place in their hearts for the music of The Apostles, the musical group based in the commercial city of Aba and best known for their string of folksy pop hits from the mid-1970's into the early 80's. More hardcore scenesters, though, may remember the band's more obscure early years as an unruly highlife-and-Congo music bar band, and their transformation into a rugged soul unit to replace departing hometown heroes The Funkees of Aba, who were getting set to relocate to London. Under the leadership of guitarist Walton Arungwa and fronted by singer Chyke Fussion Okoro, The Apostles of Aba (also known as The Apostles Rock Group of Nigeria) were quickly signed as the first pop act on the newly-formed Aba-based BEN label. The group's first single 'Down Down The Valley' b/w 'Battery Rock' was a massive smash that financed the rapid expansion of BEN (which would eventually evolve into Clover Records). The Apostles' second BEN single-- 'Onye Akpa' b/w 'Oshi Onwu' --while slightly more obscure was an even more intense funk workout. Having proven their mettle locally, The Apostles were then snapped up by EMI Records and began their reign as pop stalwarts. Having released one of the best Swedeath debuts in recent memory under the form of Chamber Of Abomination, the mighty BOMBS OF HADES aren't ready to rest on their laurels. So even if those veterans are already gearing up their artillery to record their second full-length (to be unleashed next spring), being the underground dogwarriors that they are, they've also put out since then two EPs and one split with the as-vicious TORMENTED in the purest UG tradition. And as if to emphasize that after being relieved from his duties as THE CROWN frontman (and may we remind you former GOD MACABRE and UTUMNO?!) Jonas Stalhammar is more then ever eager to focus on BOH, the band have already two other splits ready in the pipeline. The first one to be unleashed through DOOMENTIA sees them sharing a piece of wax with fellow old-schoolers USURPRESS and includes two new "intense and straight-forward" tracks as Stalhammar puts it himself, five minutes of Sunlight studio worship delight. While "Until Death (Hanged By The Neck)" written and recorded last April specifically for this EP, "Inside Teradome" is a reworked and updated version of a song written back in 2001 and already recorded for the bands very first demo the following year. Although a newcomer of some sort on the scene, USURPRESS kind of follows the same thread on the B side. Formed in Uppsala in 2010 by some old timers who wanted to "combine crust and death-metal with strange guitar figures" and joined few months later by former INSISION, DELLAMORTE and current IRON LAMB four-stringer Daniel Ekeroth, this release is their first official one after one very limited demo. Recorded by Lawrence Mackrory from DARKANE and F.K.those two songs ("The First Of Five" and "Dying For The Dying Gods") may even be filthier than their one-time roommate. So while the music of DRUID LORD is a fine return to the days of yore when VENOM, CELTIC FROST and POSSESSED reigned supreme, a time where death fuckin metal meant heavy tempos, great riffs and dark atmosphere, not technically wanking nor ill-fated so-called concepts, theyve been playing over the last two years the UG game faithfully according to its original rules. So besides one hell of a debut album released on Walpurgis night in 2010 (and aptly titled Hymns Of The Wicked), they've also been steadily putting out split seven EP with a couple of fellow retro-metalheads, namely WOODEN STAKE, KAIJU and SKELETAL SPECTRE. But this one is different. The first 7 inches of theirs bearing their name alone underneath its creepy Mark Riddick artwork enhanced by your average DOOMENTIA quality stamp, Druid Death Cult also contains what is maybe their heaviest material to date. His work has been performed throughout the United States and Europe, and for several years now he has performed alongside his father, Yoshi Wada. 'Gradient' is two sustained tones, a fourth apart, positioned along a wall, one at each end. The string player produces a very slow glissando from one pitch to the other while physically moving from one pitch to the other - in other words, the string player moves so that pitch distance coincides with spatial distance. The two possible directions form a sculpture-like presence shifting through all of the blue notes. With this as our compass, Analog Africa charters its fifth expedition to Benin, traveling far north to delve deeper into the obscured repertoires and tales of the Bariba and Dendi people. Originating from the Kwara state of northwest Nigeria, the Bariba - a predominantly Islamic people - now dominate the Borgou department of Benin with the market city of Parakou at its heart. The rhythms of their culture constitute just one domain of the Islamic Funk Belt - a distinct musical swath of land encompassing northern Ghana, Togo and Benin. Once frequented by Muslim merchants and traders, the belt has yielded a rich harvest of talent with the likes of Uppers International (Ghana), Orchestre Abass, the Black Devils (Togo), Anassoua Jazz (Benin) and, undoubtedly the most powerful band from Parakou, Orchestre Super Borgou, who were first introduced to the West via Analog Africa's defining release, "African Scream Contest." The birth of modern African music in Parakou is inextricably linked to Super Borgou. The progressive-minded father of the band's founder, Moussa Mama, imported modern music - which he learned while working as a goldsmith in Accra, Ghana - to the region in the 50s. His return to Borgou and subsequent teachings spawned countless bands from villages across the department. In its infancy, Super Borgou served as a cover band for Congolese Rumba hits but, in line with the most enigmatic - and experimental - African bands of the day, they developed their own musical identity by reinventing traditional songs and rhythms. With Benin's foremost drummer, Bori Borro, in their ranks, Bariba and Dendi linguistic folklore - alongside melodies of an Islamic ilk - fused with Soul, Pachanga, Breakbeats, Rumba and Afro-Beat, Orchestre Super Borgou de Parakou manufactured a sound of penetrating and unpolished directness, blurring the line between the erstwhile rhythms of the devout village and the modern grooves infecting the forward-thinking city. Their reinvention redefines what contemporary audiences classify as the "Afro" genre. Performing live at the bar 'Congolaise', the high-octane live performances of Parakou's finest troupe also captured the imagination of Celestin Houenou Sezan, co-founder of Albarika Store (Benins most important music label), and Super Borgou were, in fact, the legendary label's very first EP release. Apart from Albarika, Discadam - and its sub labels Impressions Sonores du Nord and Echos Sonores du Borgou - were the band's major backers who helped galvanize the sound of northern Benin. One of these included a stint at the "End Of Cole Avenue" club in Dallas-one of the Velvets few live performances where a professional sound engineer was actually on hand to record the sets. Some of the songs recorded over those few nights showed up in 1974 on their 1969: Velvet Underground Live album, but the sound quality was not great due to Mercurys use of third or fourth generation tapes. However, the first generation tapes have since resurfaced, and the difference in sound quality (heard here) is a welcome one. Most people know of the infamous "that difficult 25th album", but for Jazkamer the landmark number appears to have given no difficulties, as "Failed State of Mind" is the most mellow and easy-on-the-ears recording Jazkamer since 2006's "Panic". The nine tracks that makes up the album is a drifting tapestry of droning guitars, distant location recordings and tasteful percussion work, all woven together in a seamless stream that is subtle and abstract. Melody is hinted at, but never achieved, buried beneath layers of sound. One could almost thing that Jazkamer is getting mellow in their older years. What sticks in the ear is the clarity with which Jazkamer shifts between different swathes and bandwidths of noise. From moment to moment what you catch feels like a pinball machine, a child's electronic toy, a rasping insect, a fax, or simply the abstract whirr of sonic information; all caught up in an articulate but pressured streamline. "Fail State of Mind" is a pure and profound release that sticks a new definition to naturalism. Argentinian sound-wizard Anla Courtis contributes with guitar-work on two tracks. One track also features turntable surface crackle, which could bring the listener's thoughts back to the "Turntable Surface Fireball" LP (2001). Although "Peanuts" is not a noise record, it could hardly be called ambient music. It might work well as background listening, but listen carefully and realize the many details in the music. Strangely Jazzkammer's 'quiet' albums have previously been described as their most difficult. Hegre and Marhaug are rather puzzled about this themselves, and hope that "Peanuts" will make its listeners feeling enlightened and joyful. It's doubtful many folks have ever heard the British band Sammy - I certainly hadn't which was kind of surprising given the band's impressive pedigree. Drummer Mick Underwood was apparently the band's driving force, with the line up rounded out by a collection of rock veterans including ex-Audience horn and woodwinds player Keith Gemmell, ex-Billy J. Kramer keyboardist Mick Hodgekinson, former Ginhouse guitarist Geoff Sharkey, and ex-Roy Young Band bassist Paul Simmons. Signed by Philips, the band debuted with a 1972 45 'Goo Ger Woogie' b/w 'Big Lovin' Woman'. While the single did little commercially, it attracted enough interest and attention for Philips management to green light an album. Co-produced by Louie Austin and Deep Purple's Jon Lord, 1973's "Sammy" offered up a competent, if slightly worn set of mid-1970s hard rock. Largely penned by Sharkey and Simmons, lyrically and musically there wasn't a lot of originality going on here (kind of like the album cover) - Gemmell's sax adding occasional jazz-influenced runs to the band's blues and rock oriented sound. As lead singer Sharkey wasn't bad; his raw raspy voice sounded surprisingly good on tracks like 'Give Me More', their unlikely cover of 'I Ain't Never Loved a Woman (The Way That I Love You)', and 'Get Into a New Thing'. Imagine uriah Heep-lite with the saxes, a little more boogie and variety ('Who Do You Really Love') and you'll be in the right aural neighborhood. The band was actually far more impressive on their isolated stabs at more-pop oriented material like 'Sioux-Eyed Lady' and 'Jo Anne'. Elsewhere the album spun off a UK single in the form of 'Sioux-Eyed Lady' b/w '70 Days' . The line-up was completed by Tony Warren on bass guitar, Karl Reders on vocals, Steve Snake Reders on guitar and Paul Radge Reders on drums. In late 1978 they had started following/assisting local Mansfield band Xerox. Xerox split up in 1979 leaving Tony Foster and Tony Warren 'unemployed'. Karl, Paul and Steve joined up to form Sparta. Karl laid down his bass guitar to concentrate on vocals. Sparta came from Mansfield (in Nottinghamshire), which back in the early '80s was a town with a healthly local scene. There was a good number of local pub-based venues where local bands played all the time, Savage and Tyrant being among them (as featured on the Scene of the Crime album). After having established a healthy local following, the next step for Sparta was to have their on vinyl out. In 1980, Nottinghamshire-based label Suspect Records put out Sparta's debut single pairing 'Fast Lane' with 'Fighting To Be Free'. Suspect Records basically was founded to allow the band to release their first single, financed by the band. 1.000 copies were pressed primarily for promotional purposes, since a "real" single always impressed more than a demo tape. Don't be fooled by the name - with a moniker like WILDWOOD, you might expect pastoral lite-rock from some self-absorbed hippies. Instead, this hard rocking quartet of the same name parlayed some of the toughest, most malevolent late 60's sounds heard on tape, and their spectacular legacy is celebrated upon the deluxe 2CD anthology Plastic People. WILDWOOD hailed from the tough blue-collar environs of Stockton in California's Central Valley - and they walked it like they talked it. In the late 60's Bay Area mellow milieu, WILDWOOD was the exception - dark and vaguely sinister in both look and style, they melded the fuck you attitude of the garage era with a soulful R&B streak and some enviable hard rock chops. Nevertheless, the outfit ruled the region between the years of 1968 and 1972, promoting their own shows and recording a slew of original material at the old Fantasy warehouse in San Francisco. Two sought-after 45s - Plastic People and Free Ride - were all that escaped of WILDWOOD for public consumption at the time, but Frantic has gathered up the rest of the sessions to present the rest of their outstanding, power-packed repertoire. Featuring the soulful vocals of bass player Frank Colli, the WILDWOOD sound is reminiscent of acts as varied as The Doors, Music Machine and Steppenwolf, but with a powerful, unique backbone that is very much their own. Joined by organist Mark Ross, guitarist John Turner, and drummer Tim Mora, Colli was a legitimate bad-ass whose expressive personality delivers WILDWOOD in a class of their own. In addition to the all the surviving masters by the group, we also include the legendary two-sided early 1967 single by precursor combo The Mal-Ts, and a brace of ear-opening demos and studio sessions by the band's iconoclastic lyricist, Chalker - rumored at one time to have personal knowledge of the Zodiac Killer! Independent to the end, WILDWOOD did their own thing, and their story is a good one, detailed in an extensive liner note by Grammy-nominated 60's expert Alec Palao. SPOOKY TOOTH - LOST BROADCASTS
The performances featured on this DVD package come from two different sessions: November 1968 and April 1973. The first session features the original line up of the band performing their single The Weight which was a cover of the Band song and was also Spooky Tooth's single at the time. The second session from Spooky Tooth was filmed in April 1973 and the band are promoting You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw and we have two versions of Cotton Growing Man and Moriah alongside Old As I Was Born and Waiting For the Wind the latter track being the opening track from Spooky Two.
