Fourth release on the Mississippi Records imprint Water Wing. Psychic Feline consists of Bob Desaulniers, Sydney Roth and Curtis Muenze. Arising from the ashes of The Caldonias, Psychic Feline is quickly rising to the top of Portland Oregon's prolific music scene. Words like psychedelic don't even scratch the surface in this bass-less trio. With Sydney's primal percussive stomp as the platform for the guitars of Bob and Curtis, the trio create knock-out hooks, savage fuzz and soul-vibrating feedback. Vocals are a tasteful additive in this 50% instrumental outfit. So it's appropriate that their newest offering and first for Water Wing contains a blistering fuzzed out rocker on the A side, 'White Walls' and an instrumental on the flip, 'Non Dot'. 'Circuits' was originally released in 1999 on the Vermiform label. It was well received, even charting on CMJ. This reissue puts 'Circuits' on vinyl for the first time as a deluxe double LP with a gatefold cover and a full bonus side of unreleased material. 'Circuits' includes AFC collaborator Tara Tavi (ex-Blue Silk Sutures, Bastard Noise, Savage Republic, currently of Auto Da Fe) who plays yangqin (Chinese hammer dulcimer) and sings. Former Man Is The Bastard drummer Joel Connell plays tablas and percussion. Remastered for vinyl by Tim Stollenwerk (Mississippi Records, Sublime Frequencies, Fat Possum). Co-released by Turned Word Records from Belfast, Maine. The four song bonus side begins with 'Empire', a song recorded for a compilation that was supposed to be released by L.A. venue, The Smell. Barnes and Tavi are joined by then AFC member Erika Anderson (EMA, Gowns). The comp never saw the light of day, but Empire now has. 'Yamasuka' adds fellow former MITB member, Aaron Kenyon on bass to this release and rounding off the bonus side are folk standards 'Knight On The Road' and 'Bonny Greenwoodside'. The latter recorded live at the Claremont Forum in 2001. Amps For Christ use unique instrumentation in an eclectic approach to play 'folkcore', coined & defined by founder Henry Barnes. Mr. Barnes modifies Hammond organs to a fixed scale that defines AFC's sound. He builds his own electric bouzoukis, sitars, guitars, violins, metronomes, oscillators and noise machines. Prior to AFC, Mr. Barnes was a founder of Man Is The Bastard and Bastard Noise. JI&TRM will make an impact on you in the same way with their second album Bloom; an innovative and highly personal take on the psychedelic rock and the very use of its many components and elements. As the indicating seriousness of the first line of the opening track reveals; "It's not a joke this time. I'm leaving reality for sure". The band's musical references are more in a multi-colored fashion compared to it's predecessor Elefanta and has really taken the songs straight through the prism. Because what we hear, among a number of things, is a massive use of sweeping passages of dripping wet guitars that shake and tremble well into the morning, song dressed in an oceanic reverb that pours through the panting rock and roll, melodies that move in cycles and works that have a run time of more than nine minutes. The powerful debut of the organ can also be seen as a direct result of this change in influences, and the musical guest behind it, the gifted Patrik Kolar, whose masterful and accurate playing adds even further dimensions to an already well nuanced repertoire. Karina ESP has been releasing select CDRs, cassettes, 10"s and other modern record formats since 1998 already, which gathered founder Chris Gowers quite a cult status within the ambient scene. He creates Warm and dark drones, mostly guitarbased but his vague melodies and select use of other instruments creates a unique environmental atmosphere. Gowers is also founder of the labels Evelyn Records and Trome Records, a member of Signals and Rome Pays Off (both with Mark Beazley of Rothko) and a frequent collaborator with the likes of Isnaj Dui, Circle Bros and Caught in the Wake forever. It's fair to say that despite his long history and reputation, Karina ESP hasn't been the most productive act around. Gowers started working on this record a few years ago, but things did not fall into the right place. Until late 2011, returning from a short Benelux-tour. Gowers travelled to Scotland, where Fraser McGowan of Caught in the Wake Forever and Small Town Boredom managed to record the album in a matter of days. And that's what Detachment sounds like: thinking and doubting about something for a long time, and then letting it all out at the same time, telling what needs to be told, not holding back any details, but telling it clear enough so the point stays clear. First full length album by one of the greatest gospel musicians of all time! Boyd Rivers was an amazing but unfortunately, little known gospel artist. Comparisons could be made to Charlie Jackson, but in the end not too many people sound anything like Boyd Rivers. Side one features Boyd playing stunning electric guitar & belting out 6 incredibly heavy songs. Side two finds Boyd playing acoustic guitar - a bit mellower but still impassioned. All the material on this album has never been released, with the exception of 'Fire In My Bones' - the title track of the Case Quarter 3 CD gospel compilation. Originally released on Philips Ethiopia in 1973, this seemingly impossible to find LP is available once again to the lucky humans of the world. With a mix of modern and traditional instruments these fourteen songs go through the progression of an Ethiopian Amhara wedding sung in Amharic. With the trio of singers, Lemma G. Hiwot, Zenebech Tesfaye, and Selamawit G. Selassie, alternating turns at the microphone, and sharing call and response duties, a relentless frenzy of hand clapping incites dancing and smiles. The consumption of tedj (honeywine) and the swirling love of a wedding was captured in the studio with euphoric energy to take away to play over and over again when the festivities are over. With hand screened covers and an insert of wedding photos accompanying the liner notes, this is the next best thing to an invitation to the real thing.
