0368766 7" AJXS 286 0676499028674 ACID JAZZ	AFEX - SHE'GOT THE TIME Presented in a gorgeous 1960's style lacquered sleeve, this record is the first offering in the second set of the Rare Mod EP series and is settling well into an ever increasing list of rare and much sought-after releases. In 1965, with an average age of thirteen, the Essex-based band were already headlining mid-week club nights in Soho (and were still up in time for school in the morning). It wasn't long before they were scouted by EMI and recorded a number of demos - these tapes have been lost since the late sixties and are released here as the b-sides for the very first time. But most importantly, it announced one of the essential musical experiences of the era, The Byrds. And if 'Mr. Tambourine Man' sounded like an electric symphony, Gene Clark's 'I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better' captured the group's need to let loose musically with a thrilling up-tempo arrangement - one that would launch a thousand U.S. garage bands. 0369893 2xLP WW 5 2090503698932 WATER WING	AMPS FOR CHRIST - CIRCUITS (2LP) 'Circuits' was originally released in 1999 on the Vermiform label. It was well received, even charting on CMJ. This reissue puts 'Circuits' on vinyl for the first time as a deluxe double LP with a gatefold cover and a full bonus side of unreleased material. 'Circuits' includes AFC collaborator Tara Tavi (ex-Blue Silk Sutures, Bastard Noise, Savage Republic, currently of Auto Da Fe) who plays yangqin (Chinese hammer dulcimer) and sings. Former Man Is The Bastard drummer Joel Connell plays tablas and percussion. Remastered for vinyl by Tim Stollenwerk (Mississippi Records, Sublime Frequencies, Fat Possum). Co-released by Turned Word Records from Belfast, Maine. The four song bonus side begins with 'Empire', a song recorded for a compilation that was supposed to be released by L.A. venue, The Smell. Barnes and Tavi are joined by then AFC member Erika Anderson (EMA, Gowns). The comp never saw the light of day, but Empire now has. 'Yamasuka' adds fellow former MITB member, Aaron Kenyon on bass to this release and rounding off the bonus side are folk standards 'Knight On The Road' and 'Bonny Greenwoodside'. The latter recorded live at the Claremont Forum in 2001. Amps For Christ use unique instrumentation in an eclectic approach to play 'folkcore', coined & defined by founder Henry Barnes. Mr. Barnes modifies Hammond organs to a fixed scale that defines AFC's sound. He builds his own electric bouzoukis, sitars, guitars, violins, metronomes, oscillators and noise machines. Prior to AFC, Mr. Barnes was a founder of Man Is The Bastard and Bastard Noise. In his long and distinguished career, the legendary Detroit-born drummer Brooks played with everyone from Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Max Roach, Charles Mingus. From 1959-64 he was in the Horace Silver Quintet performing on classic Blue Note albums such as Song For My Father. During his lifetime Brooks released precious few solo albums. His debut, Beat, was released in 1963 on Motowns then new off-shoot jazz label Jazz Workshop. His connection with his hometown label dated back to his time working with The Four Tops. In 1972, Brooks formed the Artistic Truth. Black Survival, the Sahel Concert at the Town Hall was originally released on the small independent Im-Hotep Records in Harlem in 1974 (which also released Brooks earlier Ethnic Expressions). After many years on the New York jazz scene, Brooks returned to Detroit in 1975, where he continued to perform with the Artistic Truth as well as forming the collective Musicians United to Save Indigenous Culture (MUSIC) along with Strata founder Kenny Cox and members of the Tribe collective, Wendell Harrison and Harold McKinney. The LP on Smog Records was so rare only 200 copies were ever pressed for radio promotion and only 3 of the originals are now known to still exist. Formed by Hugo Leao (real name Hugo Filho) in 1966, The Gentlemen were a garage-rock band from Pernambuco that came together via inspirations from the 'Jovem Guarda' movement and the 60's psyche-rock sound from the UK. The group consisted of Hugo Leao (bass and vocal), Clio (rhythm guitar), Valmir (lead vocal), Saulo (drums), Enilton (guitar) and Carlito (keyboards). 'Sorriso Selvagem' is the first track on the groundbreaking, self-titled, classic album from 1972, sounding like a mixture of Santana and Deep Purple. The single 'Christina' features the great Zé Ramalho and will be reissued in 2012 on Mr Bongo. They merge the psych sounds with the traditional Pernambucan percussion, Indian sitars & Moroccan lutes. Hugo currently resides in Paraiba, Brazil. The LP features fully reproduced original art, featuring beautiful drawings by Jomar Gama. "When we gathered for the grand experiment of Purge & Slouch, Howe Gelb recalls, "the idea of which was to record without having written anything prior for it. Some actual songs did pop out, perhaps for the sake of warm-up or while mics were being wired...maybe just for the sake of vigorous deployment. Re-living some old songs there and then, we bundled em up after the fact for what would become Stromausfall instead. Add in a bevy of insanely varied, albeit somehow congruent satellite bands-Ektroverde, Eturivi, Kirvasto, Pharaoh Overlord, Lusiferiinin Armosta, Slussenanalys, Split Cranium, and scores more-and his cottage industry becomes an empire. Pile on the independent record labels he operates-Ektro, Full Contact, Super Mets, and Ruton-and that empire expands into a cosmos. Despite his ceaseless activity, Lehtisalo's first proper solo LP, the subdued, introspective Rotta, didn't appear until 2010. Shying away from ego and excess, the album evokes a dimly lit stroll down snowdrift-clotted city streets where an unabated wind carries the familiar but vaguely sinister chatter of eccentrics, drunks, animals, and ghosts. The schizophrenic follow-up, Interludes for Prepared Beast, takes yet another abrupt left turn. With a title that references (and perhaps parodies) John Cage's piano molestations, Lehtisalo's latest effort scans like a transcription of his own central nervous system. Each side of vinyl comprises an unpredictable 17-minute suite that fidgets and sprawls in a neon procession of stabbing fuzz guitars and clacking, rattlesnake percussion. Noise, prog, metal, punk, ambient, and electronic fragments stutter, shift, and melt beneath an abstract sun. During key moments, a benevolent ogre chants random absurdities before glassine synths and psychedelic sound effects drag him out to sea. Eddie Russ's debut album Fresh Out was recorded in Detroit in 1974. The album featured the group The Mixed Bag, which Russ put together in 1972 from members of the local Detroit jazz community, where he had made his base. Fresh Out, originally released on the independent Jazz Masters label, also later became the debut release for Soul Jazz Records when we first released the album in 1992 (20 years ago!). In his long and distinguished career, the legendary Pittsburgh-born keyboardist Russ played with a stunning array of legendary jazz musicians that included Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Roland Kirk, Sonny Stitt, Sarah Vaughan, Hank Mobley, Cal Tjader, among many others. Eddie Russ and The Mixed Bag released two more seminal classic jazz-funk albums in the mid-70s (See The Light and Take A Look at Yourself). The Mixed Bag also released its own album (with Russ appearing under the alias Gaff Dunson!) on Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin and Marcus Belgrave's collective Tribe label. Members of this group also recorded for Kenny Cox and Charles Moore's similarly styled Strata label - these labels being the two main independent jazz record labels in Detroit during the 1970s. But he didnt do it alone-frequent collaborator Julian "Cannonball" Adderley conducted the orchestra (the two were next to team on the cult classic concept albums Soul Zodiac and Soul of the Bible). The result was a record was a record far more restrained, even respectful, than Mass in F Minor, with touches of psychedelic guitar, a funk rhythm section, flute and electric piano the principal instruments in some very tasty, swinging instrumental passages. But perhaps the records most inspired interpretive move was to set the vocal passages to a gospel choir, sounding for all the world at times like a more soulful Jesus Christ Superstar or Godspell (all of which, curiously, came out at about the same time-this album was definitely reflected the early 70s zeitgeist). Needless to say, given Axelrods reputation and the repertoire involved, this is very much a cult favorite, given its first reissue here of any kind, with new liner notes and photos. The album was inspired by a gift from Jimi Hendrix - a Gibson J-200 guitar, which Hendrix presented to Ayers after Soft Machine supported Hendrix on a tour of the US. Partly recorded in San Jos (Costa Rica), Lisa's hometown, Trio De Janeiro was then mainly completed under the guidance of her long time companion Atom TM in his Frankfurt studio. When the first Lisa Carbon recording was released back in 1992 (The Lisa Carbon Trio: 'Opto Freestyle Swing', 12", Pod Communication), the German magazine Frontpage gave it one star (out of 6) and declared it 'not music'. Magazines come and go, but Lisa is still here. The music was controversial, and while for some it was the most unhip thing to listen to, for others it was an enlightenment. Much has happened since then and Lisa Carbon ignored styles and trends, and instead created them. In 1995, musical fashion caught up with her. Her music, once declared unmusical, had become the hype to follow when U.K.' s Rephlex released her second album Polyester after a two year delay. Lisa's sound was still fresh, so fresh in fact that it was even emulated by those who used to be trendy in 1992. But Lisa grew tired of the unprofessionalism in the music business and so joined producer Atom Heart's label Rather Interesting in 1997, and the album you have in front of you was born. Now that we have crossed into the millennium, you can see and hear that Trio De Janeiro still sounds amazingly current. This re-release contains the two bonus titles 'Tempo Feliz' and 'Song For Frank Brown', which up until now had only been available on the 1997 Japanese release. This CD is the result of a low period of his life that eventually resulted in the recording of some unforgettable music and the release of two of his most in-demand albums. In 1988 Willy's stock had fallen so low in the States that he couldnt get a record deal. He retired to New Orleans to regroup and in 1990 recorded the "Victory Mixture" album with Allen Toussaint, Dr John, Eddie Bo and the Meters. This was issued in Europe on the independent Sky Ranch label and sold a very creditable 200,000 copies. In 1993 Willy toured with his band and Dr John, Johnny Adams and the Wild Magnolias as part of the New Orleans Revue. An album, "Big Easy Fantasy" was issued, containing several live New Orleans-themed songs and some tracks from "Victory Mixture" that had been remixed with added vocals or instrumentation. Many other Liverpool groups such as The Swinging Blue Jeans, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Merseybeats and The Searchers to name but a few, enjoyed great success both on record and live. However, the "British Beat Boom" soon saw Manchester emerge as a strong contender to Liverpool, with numerous talented young musicians and countless groups popping up everywhere in and around the city. Groups such as Freddie & The Dreamers, The Dakotas, The Hollies, Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders and Hermans Hermits achieved phenomenal success around the world and found themselves competing in the premier league with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones! However, the vast majority of Manchester groups formed during the early 60s did not attain this level of fame and commercial success, and had to come to terms with achieving only local prominence, if any at all. Even though lesser known, they werent necessarily less capable as musicians. In people like Pete Bocking of The Fourtones and Peter Cowap of The Country Gentlemen, Manchester certainly had its' own guitar heroes, while Graham Gouldman of The Mockingbirds was to become one of the most talented and prolific pop songwriters of the decade. This album pays tribute to all the groups from the Manchester area who never really made it big as far as commercial success is concerned, yet they all gave us such a great time in the 60's with their music.
