Jonas Munk is a musician and producer from Odense, Denmark who has been active in a wide range of musical styles for the past decade. In the European psych-rock community he is mostly known as the guitarplayer in the respected stoner/jazz/krautrock-outfit Causa Sui as well as related projects such as Chicago Odense Ensemble, a joint session project featuring members of Causa Sui, Chicago Underground Collective and Tortoise, which resulted in a 2LP released in 2011. 'Pan' simultaneously betrays his connections to the European stoner-rock community and the world of electronic ambient music and this album combines ideas from both worlds, while the result really doesn't belong in neither of them. With the album's motoric analogue synthesizer patterns and its warm, fuzzy drones the influence from 1970's German synthesizer- and new age music, such as early Kraftwerk, Ashra and Popol Vuh, is apparent from the first note. But there's also definite traits of American styles running through this album, from the flowing optimism of Alice Coltrane and Terry Riley to the modern-day psychedelia of Comets on Fire and Bardo Pond. For many years, The Misty Hush Revival's name was only a rumour whispered in collector's circles, with only a handful of copies of the original album known to exist. Like The Bachs or The Index, this is one of those hard to describe albums which seem to live in a world of their own. Despite the late '72 release date, the music here sounds more late '60s than early '70s and the whole album has a cool, lost-in-time atmosphere. The group were in fact a club band from New Jersey but surprisingly all the tracks are originals, no cover versions, and they range from fragile, dreamy pop-psych numbers to raw garage, fuzzed-out jams and teen-beat sounds. Like Patrick Lundborg says in his Acid Archives: "A cool, atmospheric trip for fans of the tri-state late '60s club sound". Boduf Songs was Sweet's first attempt at recording himself playing his own songs, using a sparse variety of instruments. Mostly vocal and guitar oriented, it would be easy to confuse him with singer-songwriters. But Sweet's compositions are way more bleak and abrasive than what most people associate with the genre. Sweet has a profound love for loud and heavy music, which he takes in the exact opposite direction with Boduf Songs. It's hard to come up with more extreme quiet bands - He proves that quiet and introspective is a whole different thing than soft. Thusfar, Boduf Songs did 4 full lengths (all on the Kranky label), and a handful of very diverse EPs, on labels as Under The Spire, Bluesanct or Latitudes. As you can tell from the song titles, Internal Memo is to be consumed as a whole. Temping and the three songs with memo in the title are the key songs. People familiar with the first records will be happy to hear a few stripped down songs, while the b-side marks the return of the piano that had such an important role in setting the tone for the last album. The other tracks manage to bind the mini-album together. This limited 10" is the first release by Boduf Songs that was entirely created since Mat Sweet moved from the UK to Toledo, OH. 200 copies were made, in beautiful jackets, designed by Sweet himself, and printed in lush silver ink on black paper by Druckwerkstatt in Aachen, Germany. Nest is no exception to this. The loud, built up start of the record gives a glimpse on what to expect on her yet unreleased third record, but is still heavily relying on the melodies that made her second album Marit so remarkable. The B-side of the EP is a lot starker, and very reminiscent of the style she used on her debut album 'Helder'. This is well illustrated by the traditional 'All Things Are Quite Silent', best known for the version recorded by Shirley Collins. Annelies delivers one loud and heavy organbased version, and a very bare pianoversion. Both are completely different, but yet strangely coherent. On 'Nest', two guest-musicians appear for the first time on Annelies side. Steve Marreyt, aka Edgar Wappenhalter and one of the founders of Silvester Anfang plays bass and sings in his unique style, while Yumi Verplancke does additional vocals as well - the first time she appears on a record since the release of the much sought after John Merrick Band 10" on Morc, back in 2004. The elegies all evolvoing from the 19th century reveal the sadness and the pain of the loss of close relatives. Melancholy and transience, deathwish and madness, dream and reality cristalize themselves out of these thoughts and build the centre of "d-Moll". The area of romanticism, especially the so called black romanticism, focuses around these motives that are now being displayed by the album. Inspired by componists of the romantic times the extict poetry is based on the dark and melancholic tunes of a piano, "Du Verwaistes Haus", based on a composition by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, being the only exception, standing out as an example for the decline of that classical epoch from its instrumental basis. C.P.E. Bach was regarded to be the umbral composer even during his lifetime by the veracuty of his father. The closing words by the German imperator Wilhelm II from 1904 build the end of the album, questioning the human arrogance with his words "the world is so big and we are so small, how come that we expect to circle everything around us". Altogether, this is an album of haunting songs from ambient to rock, with both vocal and instrumental tracks. Guitar and piano creep in, in a ghostly manner, and sometimes a rhythm kicks in, only to disappear again... This is very melancholy, very evocative music. Gowers travelled to Scotland, where Fraser McGowan of Caught in the Wake Forever and Small Town Boredom managed to record the album in a matter of days. And that's what Detachment sounds like: thinking and doubting about something for a long time, and then letting it all out at the same time, telling what needs to be told, not holding back any details, but telling it clear enough so the point stays clear. The rare tracks on this album were recorded live during those post-war years in San Francisco and L.A. The tracks on side A, taken from a concert in San Francisco in the fall of 1946, find Billie at the top of her game, despite some inevitable surface noise due to the tracks being salvaged from old 78 acetates. The Oromo people, the largest ethnic group, hasn't been equally represented. Ali Birra, the biggest Oromo star and a hero to his people was so beloved that he did break into the Amhara dominated record market. Learning how to play the guitar using the tuning for an oud, the sound is as much Arabic as Ethiopian. After two years singing in the Imperial Body Guard Band alongside Mahmoud Ahmed and Tilahun Gessesse, and a brief hiatus from music, he made these recordings backed up by the Aduu Birra Band. With a prevalent joy and catchy sing along style, Ali sings songs of love, misery, and beating the oppressor. Better price. Red Mass creates dark, driving, and repetitive apocalypse-punk that's unique to Montreal, especially considering that this band features members of now-defunct CPC Gangbangs. Their dissonant and disjointed dark-wave eventually erupts into hypnotic noise. The sound and vocals range from the low preach of Bad Seeds-era Nick Cave to the severe rants of Fear's Lee Ving, all bound and gagged with acidic guitar solos revived from long-dead Eddie Hazel. This 10" starts out curiously open but gets progressively darker as you are sucked deeper into their vacuum of violence.
