Pete Brown was a Londoner and a veteran of the underground scene. Born in 1940, he first came to prominence as a poet. He was just 14 when his first poem appeared in 'Evergreen Revue' in the US. Then in the early sixties he worked alongside another British poet Mike Horowitz. His direct involvement with rock music came when he was asked to form a songwriting partnership with Jack Bruce to write lyrics for Cream and the partnership proceeded to produce the lyrics for many of their finest songs:- Wrapping Paper, I Feel Free, Sunshine Of Your Love and White Room. After the demise of Cream, Brown continued to write with Bruce but also began his own recording career with The Battered Ornaments who included Chris Spedding. After an initial 45, which with its wailing saxes and effective vocals was underrated, the band recorded this album which was a mixture of jazz-rock and blues. Dark Lady, The Old Manand Station Song were among the fine tracks and the latter later got a further airing on the Before Singing Lessons compilation. Station Song and Dark Lady had earlier featured along with Travelling Blues on the ultra-rare promo-only Harvest Sampler in 1969. Brown then suffered the humiliation of being thrown out of the band the night before they had a Hyde Park gig with The Rolling Stones.Brown's response was to form a new band, Piblokto! This release breaks the long sides down to four sides of vinyl which enhances the sound quality considerably. Also of interest is that it has been mastered in the same studio at Abbey Road as was the initial release and from the same original analogue tape masters. At times this album is a gorgeous, ethereal blend of psychedelic folk and offbeat pop; but there are some funk and avant-garde moves too (where did those crazy orchestrations, wild guitar, and breakbeats on the fierce anti-war rave-up Hard Headed Woman come from?), all supported by an odd assortment of instruments, including flute, bells and a generous helping of fuzz guitar. Chicago-based duo Chuck Hollins and David Starr only made this one album, which originally appeared in 1970 on the Ovation label. All we know about them is what the original ads for the album said: "David Starr learned piano when he was three, began composing when he was four. At twenty-one he was playing flute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Chuck Hollins picked up a guitar one day and just started playing.... by the time he left Northwestern with his Creative Writing degree he was turning his poetry into music." Others have said: "Unique blend. with a lovely dreaming, drifting vibe" - the Acid Archives; "Many diverse influences from pop-psych, mystical mellow passages, quasi-classical touches, delightful ethereal flute, trance-like vocals and fuzz guitar. there is much to appreciate on this largely undiscovered gem" - Fuzz, Acid & Flowers. The replica LP version comes in an old style tip-on jacket, and include an insert with an essay on the album and a little background history on the Ovation label. It is a 180 gram vinyl pressing, mastered from the original tapes; the sad news: this LP version is limited to 750 copies. So, we state that the sole album by Chuck Hollins and Dave Starr, their only known recordings, is a treasure trove of strong melodies and dreamy vocal stylings-an album sure to appeal to fans of acid folk, popsike, and even those who like jazzy funk. Listening to it is a rich, rewarding experience. This is a perfectly produced and arranged record, an ode to the free mind, structured by intelligent considerations. And as another person has said, "No wonder it has been sampled by DJ Shadow." Ovation said at the time of its release, "Classical artistry rock and sidewalk poetry." All true. Very cool. Here is an obscure slice of late-'60s killer Brazilian psychedelia ! Little is known about OS BRAZOES except that they formed in Rio De Janeiro late in 1969 and that their main claim to fame was being picked by Gal Costa as her backing band when she was making her early, and hugely, influential forays into Tropicalia - her best and most psychedelic effort being the Tuareg song. It turns out her sidemen had a pretty great album in them as well; they created a synthesis of North American rock & roll and native Brazilian styles, with results similar to those being explored by Tropicalia ringleaders Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, whom the band cover on this record. This is the result of a collaboration between Transubstans Records, Russian act VESPERO and German act ZONE SIX. The first three tracks of this record consists of the atmospheric soundscapes of psychedelic space rockers VESPERO; a band that combines playfulness and joy with futuristic heavy rhythms. The great recordings of their works has helped capture their essence; a tight, thick wall of sound, allowing them to give synthesizers the space they need in songs like this. To sum VESPERO up: a great band whose work is very "airy" yet concentrated from time to time. You will be surprised! ZONE SIX is a band built up by members from the more outstanding psychedelic space rock scene in Germany. Following last years masterpiece Beyond Ancient Space, Bong prove to be ever-prolific with their latest offering, a brand new album entitled, Mana-Yood-Sushai. Recorded, mixed and mastered in just two days in December 2011, this marks the first time Bong have entered a professional studio and recorded with an engineer. At the helm was Greg Chandler of Esoteric who had this to say about the experience: "It was really great to record an album live in the studio with BONG, whose heavy, droning, psychedelic improvisations unfolded like a lucid, transcendental journey. Great vibe to the session with these guys, and a real pleasure to work with. I really enjoyed the session, was cool to work with a band that can just get in and do their thing with a completely no nonsense approach!" That the music on this record is described by Greg as unfolding "like a lucid transcendental journey" is easy to imagine when you hear it. Dreams of Mana-Yood-Sushai" seems to pick up where Beyond Ancient Space ended, with ritualistic vocal passages atop their meditative jams. Trees, Grass and Stones evolves at an unhurried pace, first emerging with simple chimes and drones before locking into a most seductive groove. The idea of making a musical transposition of the famous Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" was conceived by Fabio Zuffanti years ago in 1995, but soon abandoned until today, right after the release of the four chapters of the successful "Seasoncyle" tetralogy about the four seasons. Zuffanti, eminent personality of today's Italian Prog scene, and worldwide acclaimed thanks to his various projects such as Hostsonaten Finisterre and La Maschera di Cera, has now concluded the first in a series of two volumes dedicated to the "Rime...". The first CD contains the first four parts of the opus, while the second three parts will end on a second album which will be released in 2013. The songwriting process of "Merlin - The Rock Opera" was seen by Fabio Zuffanti, back in 1998, as a real challenge, after the release of Finisterre and Hostsonatens debut albums. Between '98 and the following year the opera had been written with the important Victoria Howard's lyrical contribute, and month were spent searching for musicians, singers, dancers and actors to set up a real Rock Opera, which toured Italy and France. In this occasion Fabio Zuffanti laid the foundations to everything that came next, including La Maschera di Cera and Hostsonaten "Seasoncycle" project. The album was then recorded in 2000, released and repressed more than once by Iridea label from Genoa, and is now still wanted by many prog listeners and collectors. This reissue in papersleeve format is now filling this void, adding new musical and graphical elements. This new version is in fact housed in a beautiful artwork, which comprises credits, photos, lyrics and the opera screenplay. The album - a double CD - has also been remixed to exhalt every musician's contribute, and the mellotron parts have been completely replaced, played with a real instrument instead of a synthesizer. A five-piece from Lombardia, Ricordi d'Infanzia only released an album and a couple of singles in 1973. They had previously played under the name of Gli Aspidi and were also present on the Fonit compilation "Nuovi complessi d'avanguardia da Radio Montecarlo". With the new name I Ricordi d'Infanzia, since 1972, they played as support band with I Pooh and Le Orme. "Io Uomo" contains a very good progressive sound, based on mediocre lyrics on the creation of mankind (a recurring theme in many Italian prog bands' concept albums). The eight tracks album has its best moments in "Morire e non morire" and the opening "Caos", one of the few tracks with keyboards to the fore. After the album release, totally unnoticed due to the lack of promotion from the record company, the group had a line-up change, with newcomers Gianni Bari (sax) and Ugo Biondi (keyboards) replacing Cassina and Vergani, and they played until 1976. Growing up in a musical family, she sang in different children's choirs,madrigal groups and with multiple bands over the years. Julius-k is an all around musician playing the guitar for Righsing, with a masterful passion. His use of different guitar effects brings psychedelic layers and unexpected moments to the music. He played for many years with Zone Six and Südstern 44, produced by Nasoni Records. Jörg Lemkuhl plays the electric bass. He is a visual artist who decided one day to learn an instrument. His style of bass playing is fun and uplifting, bringing a lightheartedness to the music. S. Abul Rödl has played many types of traditional drums and beats for 18 years with the medieval band Varius Coloribus Expierence. Righsing is a great band, live and recorded. There's no way to know why CBS Records unceremoniously dumped Rotomagus and the Chico Magnetic Band after one single apiece; suffice to say that decision was a poor one, as both bands have (quite rightly) developed a cult-like following over the years. All in all, the artistic trajectory of Rotomagus was peculiar: they started out as a harmony pop-psych band, shifted through a brief Jimi Hendrix-ian interlude (The Sky Turns Red), straight into a Vanilla Fudge groove; they then went down in flames as a hair-raising monolithic heavy rock power trio. On Julian Cope's excellent Head Heritage website, the Seth Man raves about Rotomagus thus: "The first time I heard this track (Fighting Cock), I did not freak out. I merely walked into a nearby closet and screamed my head off for a minute solid, beat the floor and ripped my t-shirt... then I cowered when it hit me: this thing came out in 1971? Before "Raw Power"?! I just lost my mind... The only thing that predates this monster in terms of being a full-on amassing of all things heavy are all the many key points on Sir Lord Baltimore's "Kingdom Come" LP and THAT'S it, brother." French magazine Rock & Folk was succinct: "Rotomagus create an emotional music, violent, even aggressive." Violent. Aggressive. Intense. On this disc we bring you the entire output of Rotomagus, including an album-length demo from 1971, the bands tumultuous, thunderous swansong, recorded as a super jam (live with no overdubs). Our Lion Productions and Martyrs of Pop edition of Rotomagus comes replete with a bi-lingual 32-page booklet, with the entirety of the Seth Mans article on the band, plus the bands history in both English and French, printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper, manufactured using biogas energy. Hard to believe this is all pre-1971, as much of the demo is not just proto punk but proto hardcore-with enough fiery attitude to make you want to scream along. "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha." The word 'Maranatha' translates to "O Lord, come!", however if separated into 'Maran atha', it becomes a credal declaration of "Our Lord has come." After a three year silence Portland's God's of Southern Fried Biker Boogie Rock have cowboy-ed up and returned to shake the dried clay from your boots and put a little swagger in your step. Ten thunderous tracks titled "Thanks for the Silver" that add just a little more southern than fried this time around and take aim with their six shooters hitting the target every single time. Formed in early 2008 by four guys that worship at the altar of vintage rock, Sun Gods In Exile is more than the sum of their respected pasts. After a brief stint in Boston's Cortez, Portland, Maine guitarist Anthony D'Agostino hooked up with old friend bassist JL, late of Ocean, to get back to basics and to play the kind of old school rock and roll that they both love. Augmented by the rock steady addition of Johnny Kennedy on drums and centered around the southern-fried vocals (and guitar) of Adam Hitchcock the boys of SGIE quickly became a club favorite all along the eastern seaboard, garnering opening slots with many including Roadsaw, Hackman, MessWith The Bull, The Brought Low and many others. Hearing what Tony & Co. had we here at Small Stone quickly signed Sun Gods In Exile and sent them into Mad Oak Studios to record their debut album "Black Light, White Lines." 2010 saw the band making their debut at SXSW as well as trips up and down the coasts and a first foray across the pond. After three years and countless devastating live shows the band returned to Portland to re-group and write what would become "Thanks for the Silver." In the process, SGIE added a fifth full time member, Christopher Neal, on the keys as well as swapping JL for his brother Mark on bass. "Thanks for the Silver" shows the Sun Gods in Exile truly coming into their own. Adam and the boys haven't just traded in their beer and muscle cars for whiskey and horses. "Thanks for the Silver" presents a band self-assured and self-aware with all the strength and swing of the first album and yet more mature at the same time. Christoper's adddition on organ, harmonica and slide guitar add flourishs only hinted at on "Black Light, White Lines" without detracting from the power that Mark and JK are pounding out. And Tony D hasn't given up a lick of ground when it comes to riffs and solos. Check it out and we hope you'll agree and say "Thanks for the Silver." Though this 1983 album is commonly thought of as a Mick Fleetwood solo record, it really was the product of a band, and one helluva band at that! Aside from the Fleetwood Mac drummer- who lays down the primal, bedrock rhythms for which he is famous, and for which his only rival could be Charlie Watts- the denizens of this Zoo include the great Billy Burnette and Steve Ross on guitar and vocals, session bass player supreme Roger Hawkins and, on background vocals, none other than Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham (the band got its start backing Buckingham on a Saturday Night Live appearance). Though the album was produced by Richard Dashut, who had produced Rumors and Tusk, Im Not Me was almost the anti-Tusk, a low-key affair showcasing the considerable singing and songwriting talents of Burnette, Ross and Hawkins, and featuring such inspired cover choices as the Beach Boys "Baby Come Home," Lloyd Prices "Just Because" and Billys homage to his father Dorsey and uncle Johnny, "Tear It Up." Given the talent assembled and the fact that it scored a hit in "I Want You Back," its truly amazing that this engaging, infectious album has never been out on CD-our Real Gone reissue includes notes by Scott Schinder that place Im Not Me in its proper Fleetwood and Mac context. 1. ..The Paul McCartney Death Rumour Singles. Paul McCartney died in a car crash in the winter of 1966 and the remaining Beatles replaced him with the winner of look-alike competition. It became the conspiracy theory of the decade. Mischievous fans presented proof to the world of the alleged deception; clues with which they claimed the band peppered their later work included the faintly-heard "I buried Paul" at the end of Strawberry Fields, the bass guitar shaped funerary flower arrangement that can be seen on the Sgt. Pepper album sleeve and the appearance of the double posing as Paul on the front of Abbey Road, dressed to imitate Pauls barefoot corpse. What is in no doubt is that the resulting spate of singles spawned by the rumour are a great collection of 60s music in their own right. Theyre all featured here, with B sides included. Dave Hamilton held a unique place in Detroit music. His success as a session musician allowed elsewhere. In the late 60s and early 70s that sound was funk and "The Detroit Funk Vaults" delves into his work of that time. Very few of these recording were issued, but those that were are highly sought-after by collectors. Number one amongst these is Prophet & The Disciples You Fool, You Fooled Me which is almost impossible to track down. O.C. Tolbert's Hard Times has recently been in-demand, whilst the Barrino Brothers I'll Take My Flowers is a long-time collectors item. Kent's on-going resurrection of the great recordings made at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals continues, with the first of several volumes of material drawn from the deeper corners of the studios bulging tape vaults. "Hall Of Fame" takes its cue from Kents recent initial volume of George Jacksons Fame recordings by focusing on material that has never been issued before. Of the 21 tracks featured here, only three have been out previously - and none of those three has ever been on CD. The superb music spans almost a decade in the life of FAME studios. Among the featured artists can be found many of the most famous names in 60s Southern soul, as well as several collector favourites that, but for the lack of a decent-sized hit, could have been just as famous. Several of the songs are widely associated with other Fame artists, but you will have never heard them as you will hear them here. Kent's King New Breed CD of 2002 was a major success highlighting future dance-floor monsters including Burnt Toast And Black Coffee by Mike Pedecin and Little Willie John's I'm Shakin'. Time And Space is a new compilation of jazz recordings by the prolific composer, arranger, producer and musician Jimmy Wisner, who has worked with some of the biggest names in the business including Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Carly Simon, Brigitte Bardot , Judy Collins, Neil Sedaka, Miriam Makeba, Len Barry, The Searchers and The Tymes. He is best known for his 1961 hit single "Asia Minor", which he released under the name Kokomo. Two classic, late-60s albums from Jerry Reed, both of them never on CD before! The titles to these two records (his first two) really tell the tale; Jerry was an unbelievable guitarist and singer, and you can add songwriter to the list-at least Elvis thought so, as he covered both "Guitar Man" and "U.S. Male" from Unbelievable (and hired Jerry to play guitar on both)! Jerry returned the favor by writing an Elvis tribute song ("Tupelo Mississippi Flash") on 1968s Nashville Underground, which lives up to its title by presenting a revelatory blend of country, rock n roll, folk, blue-eyed soul and even progressive pop. Though Reed was a protg of Chet Atkins, his eclectic taste and irrepressible personality-later on full display in the Smokey and the Bandit films-ensured that this record busted out of the countrypolitan mold that held sway in Nashville at the time. Both of these albums are must-listens for any alt-country and roots music fan, and Chris Morris contributes notes that place these two albums in context of Jerrys incredible (and, to this day, underappreciated) career. 1.
