Paul Revere & the Raiders delivered a ton of magnificent flavors during their '59-'72 run as hit-makers, from boogie and rhythm & blues to lush psych-pop. However, the years 1965 and 1966 may well be the group's most beloved era, when the Raiders drove their Pacific Northwest grind head-on into the incoming Brit Invasion sounds of the Animals and the Kinks. The result? 60s Garage Punk. And two originally unissued numbers from this prime moment are featured here. An August '65 cover of Lee Dorsey's 'Ride Your Pony' is stock Raiders at their most floor-filling, featuring Mark Lindsay's demanding vocals, Paul Revere's churning Vox organ, and an incessant riff from the groups scale-tipping lead guitarist, Drake Levin. On the flipside, '(You're a) Bad Girl' is one full summer's leap (recorded in July 66), and is a stunning folk-punk romp. Lindsay provides taunting, deep, Jagger-esque verses, a pounding rhythm section is provided by bassist Phil Volk and drummer Mike Smith, and Jim Valley (new to the group) perfectly contributes to the legendary twin-guitar sound that producer Terry Melcher would often add to the Raiders mix. Kicking off on the A side we have a chunky, bass-heavy slice of dancefloor highlife from 1975, boiled down from over thirty minutes to a far more dancefloor-friendly five by Frankie Francis (Sofrito) and label founder Miles Cleret (aka Hide and Smile). This dates from just before Mr. Frimpong became a household name in Ghana with his huge hit Kyenkyen Bi Adi M'Awu. The flip starts off with a thunderous un-released, un-finished, un-named forgotten track from Ghana's dance band kings of the 60s and 70s: The Uhuru Dance Band. This tape simply had the word 'Uhuru' scrawled on it and was found amongst hundreds of others in a state of dis-repair at the old Ghana record plant in Accra. Despite playing it to band leader George Amissah no title was forthcoming as the intended vocal had never been mixed in. Here Quantic has dusted it down and edited it into a surefire big-band dance-floor winner. Finally we cross the continent to Uganda with Quantic again applying the edit treatment to a 1974 mid-tempo offering from one of the top bands of the day - The Cranes. This is the first ever release of this killer psychedelic West Coast monster, that took many years to complete!!! West Coast Natural Gas started in 1965 in Seattle. In early 1967 they went to San Francisco to work for a local music manager named Matthew Katz. Katz was the original manager for Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape and later also It's a Beautiful Day. He talked West Coast Natural Gas into signing a contract with him but being young and stupid, they didn't realize at the time that they had basically signed everything over to him. They went into the studio and recorded some original tunes, incl 'A Favor', 'Go Run And Play', 'The Jumping Frog', 'Hashish', 'Water Or Wine', 'Beyond This Place', and 'Two's A Pair'. In early 1968 the band broke up and went back to Seattle. Katz released the single 'Go Run And Play' b w/ 'A Favor' on his S.F. Sound label under the name West Coast Natural Gas. Later he released a compilation album -the first San Francisco Sound sampler- called 'Fifth Pipe Dream'. The four songs mentioned before, 'Water Or Wine', 'Hashish', 'Beyond This Place' and 'Two's A Pair' were the ones recorded by West Coast Natural Gas, though Kats presented these as by the band 'Indian Pudding & Pipe'. This superb release includes all the above mentioned songs, plus archival material taken from acetates. A big surprise here is that four recently unshelved and never before heard songs are included as well. Two or more musicians become artists in residence in Extrapool, an arts initiative in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. These artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize. Wouter Jaspers and Audrey Chan are perfect examples of what Brombron is about. They met before and played a couple of concerts, both in the USA and in Europe and wished to document their work in the form of studio recordings, but their busy schedules somehow prevented that. Current artists such as the Black Crowes invoke its name and that of its leader Steve Marriott with nothing less than reverence. That Humble Pie was co-founded by Peter Frampton, enjoying a notable renaissance of late, provides even greater impetus for these new reissues of the bands classic albums. In 1969, Marriott, who had left Small Faces, and Frampton, formerly of the Herd, joined with ex-Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and drummer Jerry Shirley. Humble Pie's first single, Natural Born Woman (aka Natural Born Boogie) hit the U.K. Top 10 and led to its debut album, As Safe as Yesterday Is. Humble Pie live, however, was explosive, loud and raucous. Frampton left after the tour, replaced by Dave "Clem" Clempson, A year later, Humble Pie disbanded. Marriott and Shirley briefly reformed the group in the '80s but accidents and ill health plagued Marriott and the band. Humble Pie was a transitional album and a harbinger of the band's new, heavier direction. The material was darker than their previous two efforts, with striking contrasts in volume and style - Peter Frampton's gentle Earth and Water Song is buttressed between two of the heaviest tracks on the record, the band composed One Eyed Trouser Snake Rumba, and a cover of Willie Dixon's I'm Ready. Originating from the Kwara state of northwest Nigeria, the Bariba - a predominantly Islamic people - now dominate the Borgou department of Benin with the market city of Parakou at its heart. The rhythms of their culture constitute just one domain of the Islamic Funk Belt - a distinct musical swath of land encompassing northern Ghana, Togo and Benin. Once frequented by Muslim merchants and traders, the belt has yielded a rich harvest of talent with the likes of Uppers International (Ghana), Orchestre Abass, the Black Devils (Togo), Anassoua Jazz (Benin) and, undoubtedly the most powerful band from Parakou, Orchestre Super Borgou, who were first introduced to the West via Analog Africa's defining release, "African Scream Contest." The birth of modern African music in Parakou is inextricably linked to Super Borgou. The progressive-minded father of the band's founder, Moussa Mama, imported modern music - which he learned while working as a goldsmith in Accra, Ghana - to the region in the 50s. His return to Borgou and subsequent teachings spawned countless bands from villages across the department. In its infancy, Super Borgou served as a cover band for Congolese Rumba hits but, in line with the most enigmatic - and experimental - African bands of the day, they developed their own musical identity by reinventing traditional songs and rhythms. With Benin's foremost drummer, Bori Borro, in their ranks, Bariba and Dendi linguistic folklore - alongside melodies of an Islamic ilk - fused with Soul, Pachanga, Breakbeats, Rumba and Afro-Beat, Orchestre Super Borgou de Parakou manufactured a sound of penetrating and unpolished directness, blurring the line between the erstwhile rhythms of the devout village and the modern grooves infecting the forward-thinking city. Their reinvention redefines what contemporary audiences classify as the "Afro" genre. Performing live at the bar 'Congolaise', the high-octane live performances of Parakou's finest troupe also captured the imagination of Celestin Houenou Sezan, co-founder of Albarika Store (Benins most important music label), and Super Borgou were, in fact, the legendary label's very first EP release. When the Ike & Tina Turner Revue was on tour constantly in the 1960s, Ike would use any free time to book a local studio to cut tracks using all the Revues members. This CD is a collection of those great recordings, cut by Ike in the time period of 1963-1965, at various studios in the USA, Cosimo Matassas New Orleans among them, made for Modern (Kent) Records of Los Angeles. Some of the tracks come from previously unissued studio sessions and all are in great sound quality. And, yes, Tina herself is here, but as if to prove Ike was no one-trick pony, the Acid Queen sings only two leads here, while she is in evidence as a back-up singer elsewhere in the collection. Other women featured are Jessie Smith, Venetta Fields and Dee Dee Johnson. The male leads featured are Stacy Johnson, Jimmy Thomas, Ernest Lane, Bobby John, Jackie Brenston and Vernon Guy, everyone a soul and blues "King" in his own right. This is a tough bluesy set of mostly original songs, with enough of a dash of soul in the mix to let you know where it was coming from. Songs that werent written by Ike are by Curtis Mayfield, Jerry Butler, Eddie Boyd and Lowman Pauling. Even the Mayfield was written especially for Ike. Most of these tracks are being issued for the first time. Less than a half dozen have ever been released, and even those are pretty hard to find. In addition there are some tracks intended to be issued with an audience dubbed onto the studio recording and released as live. 0369003 CD CDCHD 1334 0029667049221 ACE	VARIOUS - KENT HARRIS' R&B FAMILY As Boogaloo & His Gallant Crew, Kent Harris cut the original version of Bo Diddley's Cops and Robbers and shot to prominence when it was proved that his version of Shoppin' For Clothes was the original one, purloined by Leiber and Stoller for the Coasters. He was a major mover in black music in LA, appearing as DJ Stumblin' Blue on XERB, Wolfman Jack's station. He also had a string of record shops called Target Records in southern California. His family included three sisters: Marcene ("Dimples"), Beverly and Betty who performed as the Harris Sisters. Dimples was the most prominent and it was on the flip of two of her 45s for the Trend label in 1954 that Kent first sang as Ducky Drake. Then came the Boogaloo 45s. Dimples continued to record under several different names and is featured on Love Came Tumbling Down which she wrote with husband Harold Jackson who is also featured on the stunning Freedom Riders; both are very in-demand 45s for the new R&B dance crowd. Kent Harris concentrated on discovering and managing talent and recording them for different labels until he formed Romark in the early 60s. His protgs included Brenda Holloway and the Mighty Hannibal. He worked with LA recording stalwarts Young Jessie, Ray Agee and Jimmie Preacher Ellis as well as having his own acts: the Francettes, the Philips Sisters, the Lon-Genes and his wife Ty Karim. This CD features a great cross-section of those artists and some previously unissued gems from the vaults. The whole family's remarkable story is told in the extensive notes. 1. In the early 60s Stax defined the sound of Southern Soul through the work of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Booker T & The MGs. From 1968 onwards the label widened its reach and, although records were still cut in their own studio, the label was also using studios in other parts of the city and the south. "Nobody Wins" follows these developments through a mixture of rare gems, previously unreleased tracks and a sprinkling of classics. Of the previously unreleased numbers, the earliest is the Charmels Ive Done It Again from what was probably the under-recorded vocal groups last Stax session. Chuck Brooks provides us with a brilliant version of Hold On This Time, and we have a wonderful unreleased number by Stax songwriter Bettye Crutcher. We have also gathered together many rare singles that have not been reissued or were only available on the Stax singles box sets. In this way we have unearthed masterpieces from Jimmy Lewis, Willie Singleton, Freddie Waters and Mack Rice. Elsewhere we have one side of Charlene & The Soul Serenaders in-demand Volt 45, and a number from Calvin Scotts obscure LP. First ever release of this killer Westcoast psychedelic monster that took many years to complete!!! West Coast Natural Gas started in 1965 in Seattle. In early 1967 they went to San Francisco to work for a local music manager named Matthew Katz. Katz was the original manager for Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape and later also It's a Beautiful Day. He talked West Coast Natural Gas into signing a contract with him but being young and stupid, they didn't realize at the time that they had basically signed everything over to him. They went into the studio and recorded some original tunes: A Favor, Go Run And Play, The Jumping Frog, Hashish, Water or Wine, Beyond This Place, and Two's A Pair. In early 1968 the band broke up and went back to Seattle. Katz released a single - Go Run and Play / A Favor on his S.F. Sound label under the name West Coast Natural Gas. Later he released a compilation album - the first San Francisco Sound sampler - called "Fifth Pipe Dream". The four songs mentioned before, Water or Wine, Hashish, Beyond This Place and Twos A Pair were the ones recorded by WCNG and relabeled by Katz as Indian Puddin and Pipe. This superb release includes all the above mentioned songs, plus others from acetates. As a big surprise we found another four never before heard songs.
