0370592 LP RISELP 144 RISE ABOVE	COMUS - OUT OF THE COMA Forged in the creative crucible of 1968's 'Summer of Love', Comus took a darker path than flower-draggled hippiedom, with a prophetic counter-culture vision of ferocious, glowering firepower. Their seminal album 'First Utterance' has continued to mesmerise and subvert since its release in 1971, despite the band violently imploding only two years later. 'Out Of The Coma' is the much anticipated new album by Comus, their first in over thirty three years. It features three brand new songs, 'Out Of The Coma', 'The Sacrifice' and 'The Return', through which courses the unmistakable, Stygian DNA of 'First Utterance', plus the only known recording of the band playing their legendary 'Malgaard Suite', live at a college gig in 1972. The new songs all feature in the band's current live set, and have been enthusiastically received by audiences. 'The Malgaard Suite' was planned as the follow-up album to First Utterance, but it was rejected by the band's then-record label. This recording, made on a mono cassette-player, languished forgotten for some thirty years before being re-discovered and given to the band. Is an aural artefact, raising tantalising questions as to what Comus might have become, had their ambition to record it not been thwarted. Nimbus brilliant set is the first to be released from the 1970 concert. Produced by Shattered Music as hand numbered, limited edition gate fold LPs on smoky gray vinyl. The story of Nimbus is shrouded in mystery. Aside from getting 2 of the 3 names of the band members when they agreed to play on Jims recording, and the few photos Jim took during the set, little is known about this short lived group. The attached note from Jim Sorensen recalls his experience working with the band, which split up shortly after performing on the "Turn On Your Lovelight" bill. The boys spent their formative years dreaming of being cool kids in Camden, and thrashing around somewhat aimlessly in a punk band. Nights, however, were dedicated to channelling this frustration into new songs and sounds: all of which were - and often still are - written and recorded in their garden shed. The first fruit of this overhaul was (All I Wanted Was) Danger, which became as much a motto to live by as a killer tune (with two choruses). A thrilling burst of soulful pop, Danger feels influenced by a love of The Style Council, the restless energy of Born To Run', and the call-and-response choruses of The Vandellas or The Ronettes. It is an immediate and immersive mix: classic, contemporary and expertly-crafted. The release of Danger comes backed with Dynamite, which chronicles the release of the pent-up energy and frustration of the A-Side. Though it was written with one thing in mind - to soundtrack their local indie dive, The Pink Toothbrush - its lyrics might also refer to a friend's experiences of Viagra. As always the musicians identity and album details remain covered with a cheap cloak and a weird rabbit mask or two. What we can tell from the album stream is it's S&S at their warped best. Opening with a ferocious ten minute low end ribcage rattler charmingly titled 'Dinner With My Girlfriend', the signs are good from the off. The warped low end continues to attack the head on the almost danceable 'Mermuda Triangle'. When I say danceable, I'm not sure what kind of dance it'd be mind. Maybe a drunken one step forward - three steps back shuffle. It has some seriously disorientating waves of bass pummeling you throughout. Side one ends with the title track, 'Jream Baby Jream', a slow almost mournful affair. A guitar picking away over a sedate beat and some unintelligible crooning, maybe this is as close to a conventional song as S&S will write. Quite beautiful really. 'Woodpecker' kicks off side two and we're back in the BOOMING bass zone again. A short (for this album) sonic fuckfest of frazzled electronics and harsh beats. This is like old school S&S, totally out there in the fields tickling pigs with matches. The centre piece of side two is the epic 'Rodeo Girls', a churning, groove based ten minute romp based around a low end rumble and a suspiciously familiar guitar riff (is that a warped Dr Feelgoods 'Roxette' I can hear ???), if the Black Country still had dancehalls, women full of bitter and scratchings would be dancing to this every night of the week. MARVELOUS. The album ends with 'Youth Led Worship'. Back to the booming bottom end, it sounds something like the inside of a drunks head. Your lying pissed flat out on a venue floor, there's a bass bin booming about ten feet away and some friends talking to you in what appears to be a foggy alien language, you can't work out who you are or what they're saying. About the film: Zombi 2 (also known as Zombie, Island of the Living Dead, Zombie Island, Zombie Flesh Eaters and Woodoo) is a 1979 zombie horror film directed by Lucio Fulci. It is the best-known of Fulci's films and made him a horror icon. Though the title suggests this is a sequel to Zombi (the Italian title of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead), the films are unrelated. When the film was released in 1979 it was scorned for its extremely bloody content, notably by the UK's Conservative government. Zombi 2's incredible success in Europe re-ignited Fulci's sagging career and reinvented the director as a horror icon. Fulci would go on to direct several more horror films, and Zombi 2 introduced several of his trademarks: hordes of shambling putrefied zombies, hyper-realistic gore and blood, and the infamous "eyeball gag" (a character is impaled or otherwise stabbed through the eyeball). Despite the massive popularity of the film, Zombi 2 was banned in several countries, including Great Britain, due to the massive gore content. The infamous shark vs. zombie scene was filmed in a large salt water tank and the shark was fed horse meat and sedatives before filming.

Dub has always been a big part of the picture, and many a dub-head has long lamented that the digitisation of Jamaican music in the mid-1980s ultimately sounded the death knell of the dub album. Overseas practitioners have since tried to emulate the vintage 1970s dub vibe, but no one has pulled it off convincingly. The reason why Sly and Robbie dub albums such as Gamblers Choice, Raiders of the Lost Dub and Syncopation sounded so great is that they featured the inimitable sound of the Rhythm Twins at work in Jamaica; the dubs they cut at Compass Point are equally compelling, even if they drew from disco, funk and electro. Nostalgic dub-heads now have plenty of reason to rejoice, thanks to the totally unexpected appearance of Blackwood Dub, a new Sly and Robbie dub album, recorded at Harry J studio in Jamaica and mixed down at the nearby Mixing Lab. The brainchild of perceptive producer Alberto Burur Blackwood (who has worked with conscious dancehall star Chezidek and reggae veteran Horace Andy, among others), the album seeks to recreate the feeling of a vintage Sly and Robbie dub disc. Any scepticism about the concept will immediately vanish, once one hears the opening bars of Dirty Flirty: this is as meaty and three-dimensional as anything on Gamblers Choice. Although the tracks are not obviously linked to vocal work, the track Burru Saturday is the kind of complex rhythmic stew that we always expect from these heroes, while The Bomber has the kind of mushroom-cloud syndrum sound that only Sly Dunbar seems capable of conjuring. Sometimes the album really does sound like a Channel One session of yesteryear: Riding East could easily fit on Raiders of the Lost Dub, and Ruff House could easily have been a Taxi 12-inch B side. Check the credits, and it makes even more sense: here are Mikey Chung and Sticky Thompson from the Compass Point All Stars and former Black Uhuru member Daryl Thompson, plus long-time cronies such as Skully, Ansel Collins, Robbie Lyn, and Dalton Browne - all top-notch musicians who each bring something great to the plate. This is a thoroughly enjoyable dub set that sounds fantastic on first spin and even better on subsequent spins. ...LA CARRETERA CENTRAL'. - Los Jharis De Nana was formed in the early '80s by the king of the Carterra Central, guitarist Teo Laura. Their raw and unadulterated sounds would proliferate throughout the different working class districts of Lima and would eventually set a new standard amongst musicians and fans alike. This is what many people in Peru refer to when they use the word "chicha" in a musical sense; it can perhaps be best explained if you approach it with outer space in mind. This will be quite the musical experience for the uninitiated! The 6 songs off of this 12" were taken off of a cassette release that you would find street vendors selling in Peru during that time period. Teo Laura is one of the great song writers of cumbia Peruana and has worked with many different groups since the early '70s. Let the music speak for itself!

B/w 'Shortage Of Love'. Limited to 250 copies. This single was originally released in late 1982, and soon became pick hit of the week in Billboard Magazine in early 1983. Back then the A-side received most of the attention, leaving the B-side yet to be discovered. Both tunes were the first songs ever written by Harold, and his first recordings as a single artist. The early 80s was a time of uncertainty, the economy was in a shambles and male/female relationships were starting to deteriorate, this was Harold's inspiration for his music. The tracks deal with these issues in a (playful) manner with an agenda, which is far from spreading sadness. About the songs: A - 'In The Cool Of The Night' is a smooth classic and ostentatious 6/8 soul ballad in classic Motown style. In addition the track has an impressive lead vocal presentation, sang in a natural voice opposite to falsetto, bland horns arrangement, which is performed in an authentic orchestra manners. All of the above mold 'In The Cool Of The Night' to a true treasure among the soul heritage. B - 'Shortage Of Love' is a soulful upbeat energizer of booming disco beats, that is a bit dirty and slick simulta- neously. The tough windy comp, sexy backing vocals, and the punchy sax make this number to a musical party. With its four brass ensemble and its acoustic instrumentation generate the feel of the 70s rather than the time it was issued in. 'Happy affairs' as Harold gets to the heart of the tracks inspiration, making 'A Shortage Of Love' a pure reflection of the sentiments of those times. About Harold: Milwaukee based musician and composer, and co-owner of the Je-Har Label. Harold's career as a crossover balladeer has spanned over 30 years. A popularly featured artist in Milwaukee's leading entertainment venues, including the famous Cotton Club, from the late 70s to 90s, Harold has excited and delighted audiences throughout the US midwest and south with performances described as 'sizzling' by reviewers.
