The Andersen/Pleym-Group was basically a duo which recorded their sole album in their local school with the support of some friends. This introduction might suggest that you have to expect another record of well known cover-versions but this is definitely not the case since all featured songs are original compositions by the group. And great songs they are.melodic and natural, with a Singer/Songwriter-touch but with full instrumentation including organ, guitar and drums, bearing a strong Beatles-flavour. All the songs have been carefully remastered in order to leave the authentic feel and spirit. Ltd. ed. of 300. "Fille Qui Mousse ("Girl With Froth"??) is one the most mythical albums to be released(?) from France. Recorded in 1972, it was issued in 73 (evidently only as a test pressing in an edition of maybe 50) by the legendary Futura label. Often referred to as the French Faust, FQMs album mixed collage, psychedelic rock, surreal poetry, and organically tapped noise purity with the absolute best of experimental 70s rock-and-beyond. One of the essential reissues of the 70s rock underground." - Bichon. "Straight off, we plunge into that Faust structure...riffing with a psychedelic bent, hints of Gong too...we move into bizarrely constructed patterns of percussive sound and chopped-up rock music, and just as a musical focus takes shape it disappears. A poem, recited by a girl, over an urban landscape populated by numerous barking dogs then gives way to an intensely strange mangled web of sound thats almost brain numbing. And, yet more in the way of strangeness is a piano based piece that recalls some of Roger Doyle's early experiments. The only actual song has the most bizarre lyrics (in English) and is followed by an excursion in distorted and processed guitar. Next is where the folk music comes in, but even with gypsy violin FQMs interpretation of folk is strange and twisted. She had become well-known with the groups Strawbs and Fairport Convention and was elected best British singer several times. At the end of 1969, she founded Fotheringay together with four friends. They could immediately sign a contract with the Island label. On Friday, 23rd October 1970, they had a gig at the third Essen Pop & Blues festival in the Gruga Hall. The concert was then recorded semi-professionally by the host. Now, the tapes have been elaborately re-mastered by Fotheringay guitarist Jerry Donahue who got the most out of the sound that was technically possible. 0363036 LP LP 6 4016342700061 GARDEN OF DELIG	GAA - AUF DER BAHN ZUM URANUS Gäa, a band from the Saarland region in Germany, played progressive rock with German lyrics. Their band name derives from the ancient Greek gods, for whom Gaia was the goddess of the earth and fertility. The group's only LP, 'Auf Der Bahn Zum Uranus', was a limited edition release on the Kerston label in 1974. Copies today change hands for about 600 EUR. It is a mature and well-balanced album, the artistic value of which long remained undiscovered. The tasteful cover was designed by Eduard Bell, the brother of Gaa bassist Peter Bell. There were several re-issues of the album -LPs as well as CDs-, but unfortunately not all of them were legitimate releases. For the here and now, this first release of theirs is a choice manifestation of heavy-lidded third-mind acoustic weirdity thats as ungainly as it is mystically/chemically blasted. The record begins with an arrangement of a traditional ballad, Nightingale features Greenwood's vocals and guitar with the lush, open accompaniment of Bob Jones' double bass and the pedal steel guitar of Lewi Longmire. Dark Falcon is an improvisation and re-mix of a song written and recorded by the LUCKY DRAGONS. built on samples and loops of the original recording (from their Marriage Records LP The Window) including vocals by Honey Owens, appropriated from the liner notes of a record by the Mamas and Papas. Side one closes with JOMF original, Skylight, which has been a part of the band's live set for a few years, and has been been beautifully rendered in the studio. Side two begins with a brand new song, written and sung by Greenwood and Owens, The Corner begins with the pulsing bass of a Roland keyboard, accompanied by turntable manipulations and the sparse, sting of Owen's guitar, its dark minimalism, a new classic moment for the band. The Cryin' Sea was written in Arhus, Denmark, during an amazing live set where an enthusiastic audience pushed the band to Bonkersville. Featuring incredible guitar work by Nick Bindeman, and special guest Michael Dustdevil, who also appears on Skylight, and fills out the recording with raw, fuzz guitar. The closing track, A Mania, is one of those rare, JOMF radio friendly tracks. Written and sung by Greenwood, with beautiful wah-wah guitar lines by Joanne Robertson, vocal accompaniment and closing fuzz guitar solo by Honey, the song's melancholy, knocking us out. Their 1972 LP has become such an attractive collectors' item (today's value is 300 euros in mint condition) that several bootlegs have appeared on the market. The legitimate LP release on the Garden of Delights label is limited to 1000 numbered copies, housed in gatefold sleeve and contains a 4-page colour insert in LP size, featuring a detailed history (in German and English language) of the Duisburg band and their community together with a detailed discography, cover and label repros, and numerous photographs, which reflect the sombre, stoned atmosphere of the record in a perfect manner. "Raga no. 11" is probably the best track, with "Nearby Shiras" reflecting the most psychedelic aspect of the band's music. 0363038 LP LP 7 4016342700078 GARDEN OF DELIG	LANG'SYNE - LANG'SYNE Langsyne from Barmen (Bergisches land region) in Germany played a subtle kind of psych-folk with a wide range of partly unusual, exotic and medieval instruments: sitar, psaltery, koto, glockenspiel, flute, etc. Especially remarkable is the instinctive assurance with which the three musicians, who understood each other without words, played their music together. Their only LP was released as a very small edition of only 200 copies in 1976. It is today the second most expensive "Deutschrock-LP" (close on the heels of the first edition of Cans 'Monster Movie'). Original copies nowadays fetch more than 1000 EUR. The reissues on Lost Pipedreams and Rebirth are not available any more. Therefore this new edition on Garden Of Delights is now available, with one bonus track. Rising above any number of recently unearthed late-60s anglo-pop platters, the sole offering from small town Massachusetts phenomenon Lazy Smoke is a cohesive, solid, classic album in every sense. Ten songs that weave into one-another, painting some beautifully drifty sonic picture as they go. The first remarkable trait of Lazy Smoke's sound is the lead vocals uncanny similarity to John Lennon. If that likeness was the whole story, we would have a Beatles sound-alike on our hands, and that would be that. Upon digging just a little deeper below the surface, we instead find a darker tone and a patient, eerie and almost shut-in feeling resonating through the songs. While bands like The Beatles and The Left Banke were singing about love, lament and hallucinated travel experiences, the songs on Corridor of Faces get sincerely dark right away. Even the seemingly-light teenage love-themed "Sarah Saturday" shares an undercurrent of on-the-edge uncertainty and dread. It's this undercurrent that calls to mind comparisons to Forever Changes era Love and the more damaged end of the pop spectrum. In 1970 Levi Smiths Clefs made a great rural Progressive Rock album with a slight nod to Blues, played deep from the heart with guitar and organ. But the main attraction is the deep rasping Soul Voice of the founder and lead singer Barrie McAskill, giving the songs a unique dynamic style. 0332741 LP JPR 7105 JACKPOT	MIJ - YODELING ASTROLOGER "Yodeling Astrologer" (aka: Color By The Number) could be considered an anomaly, a one-off or a miracle of circumstance in the history of psychedelic pop music. Mij, a.k.a. Jim Holmberg was discovered by ESP owners while playing in Washington Square Park in the summer of 1968. His style and persona mesmerized the label heads, and he explained to them a recent auto accident had fractured his skull but left him changed. He perceived sound, color and vision differently and he had funneled this new world of perception directly into his music. All this was enough to warrant getting Mij into the studio to lay down a record of his rambly, cosmic folk songs. The entire album was recorded in three hours, first-takes and impromptu production intact, then pressed up and introduced to the world shortly thereafter. To focus on the yodeling aspect of the Yodeling Astrologer would miss some of the depth of this album. Not just a hippie novelty act of the time, this is a truly thoughtful and somewhat frenzied document. Like Buffy St. Marie's "Meditations", Linda Perhacs' "Parallelograms" or "Cold Fact" by Rodriguez, this is an album of sincere folk songs colored with subtle psychedelic touches. While their predecessors, Suendenfall, exclusively dedicated themselves to jazz, the group included folk after a change in line-up and band name (following the example of Amon Duul II). In 1972, Hubert Schmitz invited the band into his Trepitia film and sound studio in Alpen-Druept for free recordings, as he wanted to test the newly installed equipment after a recent move into the new location. Thus the recordings were made for the album "Suendenfall II" (Trefiton HS 1017), which was released in a small edition of 200 copies at the end of 1972. Today it is sold at a price of about 500 to 1000 in mint condition. It was compared to works of the Third Ear Band, Between, and Tri Atma. 'Odiszee-Parck'(Ubu Muziek UMS 03), appearing only as a small cassette edition, followed in 1983. The music on this album is of a significantly freer style, more unwieldy and harder to digest than its predecessor; less meditative. The CD was drawn from the master tape. The cover motif is the same as the one used for the cassette, the only difference being its coloured design - like the concert poster of a quite similar make - instead of black and white. Raven from the lovely city of Newastle-upon-Tyne have been around for eternity. Well, not really from the beginning of time but most definitely from the time Metal, as we know it today, was born. Of course I am referring to the glorious New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement which started out in 1979, championed by Sounds magazine, and popularized bands like Iron Maiden, Samson, Angel Witch, Saxon and Def Leppard (to name just a few). The N.W.O.B.H.M. was indeed the starting point of a lot of different Metal subgenres: from Prog (Shiva and Legend from Jersey), to Black Metal (Venom), Pagan (Cloven Hoof, Pagan Altar), Doom (Witchfynde, Witchfinder General), Sleaze Rock (Silverwing) and Street Metal (Vardis) etc. Actually, Raven predated all mentioned bands (and styles) as they were originally formed as early as 1974 (by the Gallagher brothers who always formed the core of the band). In 1977 Raven found a solid line up with Paul Bowden on second guitar and Mick Kenworthy on drums. In 1980, as they were snatched up by the local Neat Recors label, Raven made history. For a lot of Metal historians their debut single "Dont Need Your Money" (with "Wiped Out" on the flipside) marked the birth of Speed Metal. Arguably, over in the States Anvil and Exciter claimed to have invented Speed Metal (years before Metallica no doubt) but neither can look back on a band history stretching back to the mid-70s! Raven released their debut album "Rock Until You Drop" in 1981, followed by the fantastic "Wiped out" a year later. Both albums pre-dated the term Speed Metal but lightning fast numbers like "Lambs To The Slaugther" (from "Rock Until You Drop") or "Faster Than The Speed Of Light" (from "Wiped Out") left no questions unanswered as to who was the fastest band in the world! Beyond their genesis, the albums have a shared focus: "Pop Molecules," and "Two Finger Symphony" have at least titular antecedents on Chemical Chords and both "Silver Sands" and "Neon Beanbag" appear in remixed versions (courtesy of EMPEROR MACHINE and ATLAS SOUND, respectively). He's the sort of guy who might fuck a swan, and then scream a little poem about it. In the sixties his aim was 'to overcome painting on canvas through staging the process of its destruction'. He made rhizomatic structures with scrap iron ("Gerümpelplastiken"), but soon proceeded to the "Aktion" in the vein of the New York Happenings. Gradually, Muehl began to distance himself from "Aktion". He regarded the "happening as a bourgeois artform, mere art". Accompanied by Rinji Fukuoka (Overhang Party) on voice and cello, Sachiko sounds as if she is gargling planets as she levitates wordless vocals through a slowly shifting bible-black background of orchestral drone and Eternal Music strings generated by vortices of cello and viola and hovering electronics. Cant think of anything that so beautifully combines the vision of the original Dream Syndicate with the aesthetics of dark Japanese psychedelia. On the flip there are two tracks, both of which extend the time-blurring effects of the first side into new zones of heavenly tonefloat, with Sachikos high vocal style dissolving in butterflies of F/X while electronics hiss and spit and intergalactic shortwave travels through endless space. At first, it appears accidental that the same players who have produced countless screeching aural onslaughts are creating the subtly sensitive and focused meanderings of fleshy and intricate scales. On second thought, Olson and Young love to push the envelope, as well as themselves, and Lose Today shows traces of their ever-present and contorting thumbprint: raw elegance. Though perhaps the mere consideration of the majestic noise kings performing by note seems both perplexing and cumbersome, think again. Their methods are cunning and their outpour is monstrously elegiac. Lose Today wields the ethereal meditative power leftover from The Velvet Undergrounds Sweet Sister Ray epic bootleg. The result: a melodious somnolent grievance that leaves the listener to feast on a curiously endless and internal banquet. Young snarls and writhes in irritated spiraling pronouncements that trail off in regretful, pained fashion, producing the same eventual something-isn't-right that The Velvet Underground secured, but set aside to allow the Michigan basement bluesmen to borrow. Also, here is Youngs virgin performance on bass, a venture that proves suiting as his sparse yet stable meanderings are the backbone to a jam lost in the arcane. At times the bass lines seem to be counting off the seconds until an eventual meltdown. Meanwhile, Olson wanders off on woodwinds, seemingly tangled in wavelengths, letting his own sounds guide him through a brassy chilling darkness. He follows scales-Indian scales, blues scales-though the subtlety of Olsons discipline fosters to an expansive intimacy, a nuance so massive his quips on flute and saxophone are the secret architects of Lose Today's meditation. Olson takes the spiraling mania inspired by the likes of The VUs Sweet Sister Ray lose-all jam and lets it blossom into a soundtrack for a secret think tank whose sole purpose is to maintain a shadowed fire. Though proudly and vehemently inspired by The Velvet Underground, Stare Case players are responsible for their own legend, which they have been building upon for a long time before the creation of Lose Today. The pressure is on. Good thing Stare Case players thrive on that, translating the pressure to the listener as melodious, lost requiems. The crux now, however, is that Olson and Young are imposing upon the listener a profound jam that is sophisticated, refined. The uneasiness Olson and Young have pegged is genuine, as is the shadow trailing every note. Though history is not repeating itself, it does show its teeth marks in Lose Today. Even more artists will join The Göteborg String Theory on this exceptional evening and premiere their songs in new arrangements: shooting star Anna von Hausswolff, Daniel Gilbert and The Skull Defekts featuring hardcore legend Daniel Higgs. The idea of the musical String Theory was born in Berlin in 2007. The immersive environments presented here by 42 artists from 13 different countries incite a unique multi-sensory awareness of both physical and mental (imagined) space. Some works directly examine the slipping contours of kinetic phenomena, involving magnetism (Kanta Horio), fluid dynamics (Skoltz Kolgen) or acoustic levitation (Domnitch/Gelfand/Chartier). Others have invented an impossible phantom spatiality, stemming, for example, from brain wave interference (Ulf Langheinrich) or stereoscopically rendered interferential video signals (Bas van Koolwijk). All the pieces entail a search for hidden, transitory spaces that crosswire the perceptual spectrum. After being presented worldwide (Sonic Acts, Elektra, Sonar, ...) in the form of Surround Cinema as well as in the Optofonica Capsule (a tactile audio installation), this body of work, spanning 3 years, has been painstakingly archived, preserving as much as possible the intricacies of each composition. The works presented on this DVD (in 5.1 surround and stereo sound options) were commissioned by Optofonica to stimulate the combined research of sound spatialization and synesthetic immersion. Vinyl version of the highly acclaimed Baghdad Batteries featuring a whole side of unreleased material. Baghdad Batteries is actually the third volume in Malicious Damage's ongoing Orbsessions series, but whereas the previous two were compiled from nuggets trawled from the vaults, these are new tracks recorded at Thomas' Berlin studio, which also provide the soundtrack for Austrian director Werner Boote's film Plastic Planet. It rather recalls when Pink Floyd did the music for a film called More in 1969, which appeared as an album in its own right to great success and is a brilliant move for The Orb.The opening Styrofoam Meltdown rains in with similar sense of extra-terrestrial shock and awe which would levitate the heart-strings when The Orb revved up their live shows with O.O.B.E. in the early 90s, a kind of heavenly carwash explosion of interstellar frequencies which here sees the inter-acting pulses joined by kick drum, even, at one point, invoking the ghost of Giorgio Moroder's I Feel Love. Chocolate Fingers starts as a beatless floater drenched in shimmering keys and shining melodic strands setting off an aural firework display, stun-quotient doubled when the chord changes kick in. The title track is gorgeously haunting as marimba tones melt over swirling effects before one of the highlights - the pastoral Raven's Reprise, a poignant tribute to the late Killing Joke bassist. This celestial electronic space symphony is followed by anotherS oh bollocks, they're all highlights! Dolly Unit is a dense, throbbing tech-flavoured pulser, sprayed with bluesy guitar peelings, giving way to an ancient rock steady beat before the muted house shuffle of Super Soakers. The beat carries on into Suburban Smog, deploying spaced tribal percussion and lush, organic ambience. Big Hammond chords highlight Orban Tumbleweed before the spoken interlude of Pebbles. Old mucker Max Loderbauer from Sun Electric came in on the breezy sax and bleep vamp of Woodlarking while the creaking resonance of OOPA takes the album out - actually a non-movie nugget first released on noted German electronic Skitkatapult last year [the initials stand for Out Of Place Artefact].There's a very special atmosphere to this album: two men bouncing ideas and exploring in classic Orb style to make a classic Orb album, hitting the magic place Alex always strives for, but this time with a lustful vengeance tempered with new gentleness and a movie in their heads. 0349990 LP DOCLP 44 DEAD OCEANS	GOOD ONES - KIGALI Y' IZAHABU The Good Ones is a trio of Rwandan genocide survivors who play joyous, acoustic love songs written in the ancient local, Kinyarwanda street dialect of their nations capital, Kigali. Adrien Kazigira, Stany Hitimana and Jeanvier Havugimana recorded the songs collected on Kigali Y' Izahabu over the course of one summer evening on the back porch of a friends home. The primary obstacle to recording the group was that the musicians showed up with only one guitar for two players, and that guitar was missing two strings. Hitimana "played bass" on the 4-string, and a beat-up acoustic was located for the second guitarist, the sullen, primary songwriter, Kazigira, who interweaves intricate harmonies with co-singer Havugimana. In a style often referred to as "worker songs from the streets," these simple, direct and plaintive love songs speak more to the healing power of peace than a thousand academic treatises orpreachy goodwill ambassadors ever could. Toiling at hard labor and subsisting on less than 50 cents a day in one of the ten poorest countries in the world, the hard-won spirit of these aging war-veterans shines through in The Good Ones yearning voices. Kazigira, 47, wrote 8 of the 12 songs found on the album and both plays and sings. He cites Bob Marley and reggae as his major influences. Hitimana, 47, on lead guitar and bass, sometimes teaches music in Kigali and finds inspiration in the music of Santana. And harmony singer Jeanvier, 38, who also plays guitar and sings lead on his own compositions, is most influenced by the Caribbean dance music called Zouk. The trio is punk embodied: barefoot, bandaged and jaundiced; armed with broken, mismatchedstringed, borrowed guitars; but singing angelically from amidst a landlocked country that the world abandoned. Kigali Y' Izahabu is essentially an intimate field recording that even captures the howling and barking of dogs in the background, and it was recorded by two-time Grammy-nominated producer Ian Brennan, who has worked with artists such as Ramblin Jack Elliott, Flea, TV on the Radios Kyp Malone, Richard Thompson and many others. Brennan traveled throughout Rwanda, hoping to document some of the countrys contemporary music, but up until his mission-affirming encounter with The Good Ones, he had been left wanting. As Brennan reports: "They were standing in the dark, their eyes downcast and restless, and holding only one guitar between them. From 100-feet away, I knew instantly that there was something special about them, a feeling one is lucky to experience even once in a lifetime. By that point, Id already visited literally every recording-studio in the capital (Kigali) and surrounding areas over two weeks and listened to hundreds of artists, but to no avail. This meeting had been set up through a mutual friend and the instant the band opened their mouths to sing, it was as if the universe reached down to tap me on the shoulder and say, 'What these guys do is precious and rare. Omar Souleyman is a folk-pop singer from rural northeastern Syria. Like many Syrian musicians, he made his name as a singer for wedding parties in the region, with hundreds of cassettes and CDs documenting his performances distributed throughout the country. These, along with several studio albums, earned him legendary status in the Syrian dabke scene throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. After his 2005 breakthrough folk-hit "Khataba," Omar gained wider recognition throughout the Arab world. After collecting his tapes for a decade, Sublime Frequencies released the first compilation of Omar Souleyman tracks to be distributed in the West. The success of Highway To Hassake (SF 031CD, 2007), and the enthusiastic online reaction to the promotional clip for his track "Leh Jani," led to Omar being invited to tour the UK and Europe in the summer of 2009. It would be his first time performing or travelling outside of the Arab world. He and his group, comprised of two longtime collaborators - Rizan Sa'id on keyboards, and electric saz player Ali Shaker - set off on a six-week Sublime Frequencies tour with label-mates Group Doueh. By the end of 2009, Omar had proven that his unique and charismatic delivery of Syrian electrified folkloric dabke, Iraqi choubi and Arabic shaabi had the ability to appeal to the most diverse of Western audiences. His success has continued, with further tours throughout Europe, America and Australia drawing rave reviews and leaving a trail of fervor across the globe. The rise of Omar's success has transcended the wedding halls and cassette stalls of Syria and slipped into Western popular consciousness. Despite there being no shortage of musical talent in Syria, dabke and otherwise, Omar Souleyman is the first Syrian musical export to have won the hearts of Westerners and Arabs alike on this scale. His trademark checkered khaffya, sunglasses and elegant jalaba are not uncommon male attire in the Arab world, but for years in the West, it is that exact image which has been excessively demonized. Perhaps one of the most striking achievements of Omar's rise has been watching that iconic image transformed from comic book villainy to something positively regal. The recordings on Haflat Gharbia: The Western Concerts, Omar Souleyman's fourth release on Sublime Frequencies, represent an hour of the best moments from the Western tours between 2009 and 2011, captured in striking fidelity and intensity.
